Abstract:Pipelines have been acknowledged as the most efficient and cheapest way of transporting hydrocarbon products. Failures of pipelines may result in high cost which involves injuries, human life loss, environmental damage etc. The structural integrity and reliability of pipelines is essential to the world's energy requirements. In this study, an integrated ARMA model method based on time-series analysis is introduced for the damage detection of offshore pipeline system. In this method, a series of signal pre-processing measures are employed to eliminate the influence of various loading conditions and noise contamination. The auto-correlation function of the pre-processed signal is utilized as a substitute of analysis input to further overcome noise effect and avoid the bias in Autoregressive Moving Average (ARMA) model fitting. Then, Partial Auto-correlation Function (PAF) method is employed in building optimal ARMA model. With Autoregressive (AR) parameters serving as damage feature vector, a damage indicator (DI) based on the Mohalanobis distance between ARMA models is defined for damage detection. A scaled offshore pipeline system model is designed and dynamic tests under water wave excitation are performed to verify the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method. It is proved that the proposed integrated ARMA model method is very effective in detecting the free-spanning damage in offshore pipeline system. However, it is found that this method is not sensitive enough to the pipeline structural damage which causes insignificant change to the system's vibration properties.
