Abstract:The strong interaction between graphene oxides (GO) and water molecules has trigged enormous research interest in developing GO-based separation films, sensors, and actuators. However, sophisticated control over the ultrafast water transmission among the GO sheets and the consequent deformation of the entire GO film is still challenging. Inspired from the natural "quantum-tunneling-fluidics-effect," here quantum-confined-superfluidics-enabled moisture actuation of GO paper by introducing periodic gratings unilaterally is reported. The folded GO nanosheets that act as quantum-confined-superfluidics channels can significantly promote water adsorption, enabling controllable and sensitive moisture actuation. Water-adsorption-induced expansion along and against the normal direction of a GO paper is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. Featuring state-of-the-art of ultrafast response (1.24 cm(-1) s(-1)), large deformation degree, and complex and predictable deformation, the smart GO papers are used for biomimetic mini-robots including a creeping centipede and a smart leaf that can catch a living ladybug. The reported method is simple and universal for 2D materials, revealing great potential for developing graphene-based smart robots.

Abstract:Moisture actuators can accomplish humidity-triggered energy-conversion process, through material screening and structural design. Inspired by natural caterpillars and the hydrophilic properties of graphene oxide (GO), this work proposes a geometrical design of period-gradient structures in GO films for fabricating moisture actuators. These novel period-gradient-structured GO films exhibit excellent dynamic performance that they could deform at 1000° with a small radius in several seconds at a high relative humidity (RH ≈ 80%). The properties of fast actuating speed and high response to deformation are achieved through the structural designing of the sole GO film by a one-step formation process. A mechanics-based theoretical model combined with the finite element simulation is presented to demonstrate the actuating mechanism in geometry, moisture, and mechanics, which lays the foundation for potential applications of GO films in remote control, environmental monitoring, and man-machine interactions.

Abstract:Actuators with fast and precise controllable responses are highly in demand for implementing agilely accurate mechanical movements in smart robots, intelligent sensors, biomimetic devices, and so on. Here, we report a graphene-based moisture actuator with accurately controllable direction and position responses achieved by a fast, controlled, and even programmable one-step laser reduction method. The laser reduction-induced oriented microstructures help to precisely guide the direction and location of the moisture response in graphene-based Janus films. The excellent moisture-mechanical response behaviors in these novel moisture actuators originate from the Janus structures and the periodic microstructures of a line-scanned layer. Our customized complex intelligent devices such as drums, bands, and three-dimensional wave humidity drives can highly match and verify the finite element simulations, which will inspire the creation of further smart robot designs for accurate deformation.

Abstract:A facile and cost-effective preparation of moisture-responsive graphene bilayer paper by focused sunlight irradiation is reported. The smart graphene paper shows moisture-responsive properties due to selective adsorption of water molecules, leading to controllable actuation under humid conditions. Abstract:In the present work, the wettability of defective graphene oxide (GO) film is studied by molecular dynamics simulations. A water droplet is deposited on the surface of a graphene oxide membrane, and the contact angle is measured by fitting the liquid-vapor interface. Although pristine graphene has few hydrophobic properties with a contact angle of 95 degrees, graphene oxide presents more hydrophilic properties, due to the stronger hydrogen bonds interactions at the interface. Moreover, the introduction of vacancy defects at the graphene oxide surface decreases the wettability of graphene oxide. We find that the contact angle of graphene oxide increases from 70 degrees to 82 degrees, with a defective concentration from 0% to 10%. Our results will help provide a new method for controlling the wetting properties of GO and its additional capabilities in device design for applications.

Abstract:Nanocomposite humidity sensors were fabricated by solution mixing based on reduced graphene oxide( R-GO)and quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine)(Q-P4VP). Investigations on the humidity sensing properties of the composite at room temperature revealed that R-GO effectively enhanced the conductivity of the composite under dry atmosphere,with impedance as low as 106Ω even at 2%RH. Meanwhile,it showed good humidity sensitivity and sensing linearity(R2 = 0. 995)in the low humidity range(2-15%RH). Furthermore,it registered fast response(response time for adsorption and desorption of 3 s and 25 s,respectively). The composite sensor is promising for the applications in the detection of low humidity.

Abstract:The dynamics of water near the nanoscale hydrophobic (graphite-CH3) and hydrophilic (graphite-COOH) plates has been studied in detail with molecular dynamics simulations in this paper. It is shown that these designed surfaces (by growing a layer of methyl or carboxyl groups on top of graphite) can have a significant impact on the neighboring water dynamics, with the hydrophilic carboxyl surface having even more profound effects. The water hydrogen bond lifetime is much longer near both types of surfaces than that in the bulk, while on the other hand the water diffusion constant is much smaller than that in the bulk. The difference in the diffusion constant can be as large as a factor of 8 and the difference in the hydrogen bond lifetime can be as large as a factor of 2, depending on the distance from the surface. Furthermore, the water molecules in the first solvation shell of surface atoms show a strong bias in hydroxyl group orientation near the surface, confirming some of the previous findings. Finally, the possible water dewetting transition between two graphite-CH3 plates and the effect of the strength of the solute-solvent attractions on the water drying transition are investigated. The relationship among the dewetting transition critical distance, van der Waals potential well depth, and water contact angle on the graphite-CH3 surface is also analyzed on the basis of a simple macroscopic theory, which can be used to predict the dewetting transition critical distance.

Abstract:Humidity sensors have attracted extensive attentions due to their various applications in environment monitoring, health care and internet of things. Graphene oxide has recently been exploited as a humidity sensing material because of its good hydrophilicity and excellent sensitivity. Here we report an ultra-sensitive and responsive capacitive humidity sensor using graphene oxide as sensing material. A capacitance change of ten times is observed when the relative humidity changes from 50% to 90%. The response and recovery time of the sensor are measured to be 0.066 and 0.154 s, respectively, which are several orders of magnitude shorter than conventional humidity sensors. Furthermore, its responses to flow rate, temperature and other vapors are also characterized.

Abstract:<p>Graphene oxide (GO), which has many oxygen functional groups, is a promising candidate for use in moisture-responsive sensors and actuators due to the strong water–GO interaction and the ultrafast transport of water molecules within the stacked GO sheets. In the last 5 years, moisture-responsive actuators based on GO have shown distinct advantages over other stimuli-responsive materials and devices. Particularly, inspired by nature organisms, various moisture-enabled soft robots have been successfully developed via rational assembly of the GO-based actuators. Herein, the milestones in the development of moisture-responsive soft robots based on GO are summarized. In addition, the working mechanisms, design principles, current achievement, and prospects are also comprehensively reviewed. In particular, the GO-based soft robots are at the forefront of the advancement of automatable smart devices.</p>

Abstract:Actuators that can directly convert other forms of environmental energy into mechanical work offer great application prospects in intriguing energy applications and smart devices. But to-date, low cohesion strength of the interface and humidity responsive actuators primarily limit their applications. Herein, by experimentally optimizing interface of bimorph structure, we build graphene oxide/ethyl cellulose bidirectional bending actuators—a case of bimorphs with fast and reversible shape changes in response to environmental humidity gradients. Meanwhile, we employ the actuator as the engine to drive piezoelectric detector. In this case, graphene oxide and ethyl cellulose are combined with chemical bonds, successfully building a bimorph with binary synergy strengthening and toughening. The excellent hygroscopicity of graphene oxide accompanied with huge volume expansion triggers giant moisture responsiveness greater than 90 degrees. Moreover, the open circuit voltage of piezoelectric detector holds a peak value around 0.1 V and exhibits excellent reversibility. We anticipate that humidity-responsive actuator and detector hold promise for the application and expansion of smart devices in varieties of multifunctional nanosystems.

Abstract:Many naturally occurring surfaces have superhydrophobicity that fulfils their functional demands, which has inspired considerable interest to develop similar artificial superhydrophobic surfaces with a variety of functionalities. Graphene is an ideal candidate for functional superhydrophobic surfaces due to its exceptional physicochemical properties. The recent advances in this emerging field are summarized, including the wetting behavior of water on graphene and the formation of crumpling/nanoparticle/foam-induced hierarchical structures, with emphasis on fundamental understanding for related processes. The potential applications in energy, environmental remediation, and thermal management are also discussed.

Abstract:In the past decade, graphene has revealed a cornucopia of both fundamental science and potential applications due to its exceptional electrical, mechanical, thermal, and optical properties. Recently, increasing effort has been devoted to exploiting its new features, for example, wetting properties. Benefitting from its inherent material properties, graphene shows great potential for the fabrication of superhydrophobic surfaces, which could be potentially used for various anti-water applications. In this review, we summarize the recent developments in superhydrophobic graphene and graphene-related materials. Preparation strategies using pure graphene, graphene oxide, and graphene/polymer hybrids are presented and their potential applications are discussed. Finally, our own perspective of this dynamic field, including both current challenges and future demands, has been discussed. It is anticipated that the cooperation of the numerous merits of graphene and superhydrophobicity will lead to new opportunities for high-performance multifunctional devices.

Abstract:Graphene is a new type of carbon material with a flexible, two-dimensional structure. Due to the excellent stability of its lattice structure and its mechanical flexibility, graphene-based materials can be applied in flexible humidity sensors. At present, the application of graphene-based flexible humidity sensors in the fields of medical care and environmental monitoring is attracting widespread attention. In this review, the basic properties of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as moisture-sensitive materials and methods for their preparation were introduced. Moreover, three methods for improving the performance of moisture-sensitive materials were discussed. The working principle of different types of graphene-based humidity sensors were introduced. The progress in the research on graphene-based flexible humidity sensors in four respects: Human respiration, skin moisture, human sweat, and environmental humidity were discussed. Finally, the future research, following the development trends and challenges, to develop the potential of integrated, graphene-based flexible humidity sensors were discussed.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) is a layered lubricant with high performance, but its application is limited by complex synthesis and relatively low resistance to environmental moisture. In this study, a simple and versatile self-assembly method was developed to prepare GO coatings with thicknesses ranging from the nanometer to micrometer scale. The results indicate that tribological performance is significantly influenced by ambient humidity. During friction, water molecules tend to form hydrogen bonds with oxygen functional groups and defects on GO nanosheets, destroying the ordered layer structure and thus degrading tribological performance. In addition, the further incorporation of lubricating oil is beneficial for achieving lower friction attributed to the synergistic effect of GO coating and oil film that serves as a moisture repellent.

Abstract:Humidity is a vital physical quantity which is extremely important to production quality control, reliability of electronics, and health of human being. This paper proposed a humidity sensor based on quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) using graphene oxide as a sensitive layer, and investigated the characteristics of sensor according to the shift of quality factor (Q factor) as well as resonant frequency at different relative humidity (RH). Results show that at low RH values, the shift of Q factor is more suitable than the shift of resonant frequency for assessing the sensitivity of the sensor. By combining both frequency and Q factor shifts, we obtain a sensitivity of ∼1371/1%RH at 10–60%RH (by Q factor) and 1068 Hz/10%RH at 70%RH (by frequency), which are much better than the reported QCM humidity sensors, with good linearity. The QCM humidity sensor also shows good repeatability with response time and recovery time smaller than 20 and 3 s, respectively. These good characteristics of the sensor are attributed to the large surface area and high hydrophilic nature of the graphene oxide, demonstrated good potential for future applications.
