Abstract:Purpose: Due to the progression of the disease and the side effects of various treatments, lung cancer patients usually suffer from psychological disorders (e.g. negative emotions, decreased sleep quality). Preliminary clinical evidence suggested that rational exercise could alleviate these problems. This study investigated the influence of Health Qigong Baduanjin exercise prescription intervention on psychological issues (e.g. depression, anxiety, and sleep quality) of lung cancer patients. Methods: Fifty-two lung cancer patients from the Cancer Hospital of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and China-Japan Friendship Hospital were randomly divided into control group (n = 26) and experimental group (n = 26). A comprehensive intervention of health education and Health Qigong Baduanjin was conducted for the experimental group, while only the health education intervention was conducted for the sham control group. The depression and anxiety symptoms and sleep quality were investigated based on Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) both before and after interventions, and the salivary cortisol concentrations were measured to find the relationship between salivary cortisol and negative emotions. Results: The score of depression (56.94 ± 8.54), anxiety (55.33 ± 8.69) and sleep quality (10.33 ± 2.06) as well as the salivary cortisol concentrations (10.76 ± 2.68) of lung cancer patients in the control group after the comprehensive intervention were significantly higher than those in experimental group after the comprehensive intervention (51.42 ± 7.31, 49.16 ± 7.83, 8.00 ± 1.76, 8.93 ± 1.83; P < 0.05). Conclusion: Our study suggests that the intervention of Health Qigong Baduanjin exercise prescription could alleviate depression, anxiety and improve sleep quality of patients with lung cancer. Depression and anxiety in lung cancer patients are related to their salivary cortisol concentration, and salivary cortisol concentration may be used as an objective indicator to measure negative emotions in patients with lung cancer.
