Abstract:BACKGROUND: The physical and mental health of college students tends to continuously decline around the world, therefore, it is important to improve their health during college period. Baduanjin, a traditional Chinese exercise which combines movements with breath and mind, may be one of the selectable effective exercises. However, the effect of Baduanjin exercise on college students has not been established. In this study, we systematically assessed the effectiveness and safety of Baduanjin exercise on physical and mental health of college students by a rigorous randomized, parallel-controlled design.METHODS: A total of 222 college students from Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine were recruited and randomly allocated at an equal ratio into control or Baduanjin training. Participants in control group were informed to maintain their original activity habit, and those in Baduanjin exercise group received a 12-week Baduanjin exercise training with a frequency of 1 hour per day and 5 days per week on the basis of their original activity habit. The physical and psychological outcomes, including lumbar muscle strength, lower limb proprioception function, physical fitness, as well as self-reported symptom intensity, stress, self-esteem, mood, quality of life, quality of sleep, and adverse events, were evaluated at baseline, 13 weeks (at the end of 12-week intervention), and 25 weeks (after the 12-week follow-up period). Intention-to-treat analysis was performed for the above outcomes.RESULTS: Compared with controls, significant improvements in Baduanjin exercise group at the end of 12-week intervention period were found on lower limb proprioception function (the rate of average trace error on right lower limb (%): control 23.50±5.50, Baduanjin 21.92±6.54, P=0.004; the rate of average trace error on left lower limb (%): control 22.32±6.62, Baduanjin 20.63±4.62, P=0.046), cardiorespiratory endurance (step test index: control 47.66±5.94, Baduanjin 50.07±9.30, P=0.025), flexibility (control 14.35±7.26cm, Baduanjin 15.39±6.43cm, P=0.009) and explosive force of lower limb (standing long jump test (m): control 1.77±0.24, Baduanjin 1.79±0.22, P=0.005 for adjustment baseline) in physical outcomes, and attention (Schulte Grid test (second): control 210.4±51.15, Baduanjin 192.4±47.14, P=0.034) in mental outcome. Lumbar muscle strength in Baduanjin group had been moderately enhanced but no significant difference compared to controls. No significant changes in other physical and mental outcomes, including vital capacity, blood pressure, heart rate, hand grip force, self-symptom intensity, stress, self-efficacy, quality of life, and quality of sleep, were found between groups. No adverse event was reported during the study period.CONCLUSION: Regular Baduanjin exercise had an advantage for college students on improvement of lower limb proprioception, enhance of cardiorespiratory endurance, flexibility, explosive force of lower limb and attention, compared with usual exercise.TRIAL REGISTRATION: Chinese Clinical Trial Registry ChiCTR-TRC-13003329 http://www.chictr.org.

Abstract:Background and Study Aim. In the context of increasing stress and declining health among female college students, there is an urgent need for effective methods to enhance their physical and mental well-being. The aim of this study is to analyze the impact of Baduanjin exercise on the physical fitness and mental health of female college students. Materials and methods. Sixty female college students at University were randomly selected from 150 volunteers to participate in this study. They were equally divided into an experimental group and a control group, with 30 students in each. All 60 participants completed the experiment. The study's protocol was conducted in accordance with ethical standards and was approved by the Institutional Review Board of University. Informed consent was obtained from all individual participants involved in the study. The experimental group received a 16-week intervention of traditional Baduanjin exercise, while the control group engaged in other unfixed sports activities synchronously. Results. After the experiment, the average weight of the experimental group decreased significantly from 52.41±6.35 kg to 50.06±5.46 kg (P<0.01). Body mass index, waist circumference, and other indicators also showed significant improvements. The step test index in the experimental group increased from 45.09±4.45 to 50.72±4.46, which was significantly different from the baseline (P<0.01). Improvements were noted in vital capacity, grip strength, and sit-up performance, all showing significant differences from baseline measures (P<0.01). The standing long jump and 800 m running performances in the experimental group showed significant improvement compared to pre-experiment measurements (P<0.05). Additionally, all mental health indicators in the experimental group demonstrated a downward trend, with significant differences in 10 indicators such as somatization, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, interpersonal sensitivity, and depression (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Moreover, there was a significant inter-group difference in motor skills and physical fitness between the experimental and control groups in the 800 m run (230.78±30.61 vs. 231.32±32.15) and standing long jump (1.81±0.33 vs. 1.78±0.42) after the intervention (P<0.05). Furthermore, significant differences were observed in mental excitement and participation in the experimental group before and after the Baduanjin exercise as assessed by Baduanjin’s Self-Perception Inventory (P<0.01). Conclusions. This study demonstrates that a 16-week program of traditional Baduanjin exercise significantly improves both physical and mental health parameters among female college students. These findings suggest that Baduanjin exercise can be an effective intervention for enhancing physical fitness and alleviating psychological distress in this population. The results underscore the potential of integrating traditional physical activities into health promotion strategies for young adults in educational settings.
The effect of Baduanjin exercise on health-related physical fitness of college students: A randomized controlled trial

Abstract:Background The continuous decline in the physical fitness of college students has become a serious social problem worldwide. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the effective method improving college students' physique. Previous studies have shown that Baduanjin exercise is beneficial in improving sleeping quality, mental health, body flexibility, and body physique. However, the evidence is unclear whether Baduanjin exercise can be recommended as an effective exercise to promote health-related physical fitness of college students. Methods A total of 130 college students were recruited and randomly allocated to either the Baduanjin training or the control group at a ratio of 1:1. The students in the Baduanjin training group received a 12-week supervised Baduanjin exercise training intervention with a frequency of 1 h each day and 4 days per week, while those in the control group did not receive any specific exercise intervention and were informed to maintain their original lifestyle for 12 weeks. The outcomes of health-related physical fitness involving measurements of body flexibility, muscular strength, cardiopulmonary fitness, and body endurance were measured at baseline and after the 12-week intervention period. Mixed linear model was used to analyze the effect of the Baduanjin exercise intervention. Results Mixed linear model analyses showed that the Baduanjin training group had a significant increase in the composite scores of health-related physical fitness compared to the control group from baseline to 12-week post-intervention with a medium effect size ( d = 0.68, P = 0.006). Moreover, there were significant improvements in vital capacity, physical flexibility, 800/1,000 m endurance running, and body composition (measured by body mass index (BMI), fat mass and body fat ratio) at end of 12-week intervention in the Baduanjin training group. No adverse events were observed in this trial. Conclusion Regular Baduanjin training may be an effective, safe exercise form to promote the health-related physical fitness of young adults. A Comparison of Different Qigong Exercise Types on Health in Female College Students

Abstract:Background and Aim: Ba Duanjin and Yi Jin Jing constitute integral components of traditional Chinese health preservation and fitness culture. Ba Duanjin, a form of Qigong practice, underscores the harmony and unity between body and spirit, emphasizing movement within stillness. On the other hand, Yi Jin Jing is an ancient martial arts practice. This research aims to compare the health status of female college students with different types of Qigong exercise. Materials and Methods: A total of 90 first-year female college students who were not majoring in physical education and did not learn fitness Qigong were selected to participate in this study. Qigong exercises were conducted for 12 weeks. Bmi test, vital capacity test, sit-and-reach test, standing long jump test, and 50-meter and 800-meter run test were conducted before and after the experiment. Content analysis and descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. Results: It was found that female college students after practicing "Ba Duanjin", "Yi Jin Jing" or the combination of "Ba Duanjin" and "Yi Jin Jing". The psychology of female college students has been improved to a certain extent. They have also gained physical fitness, the most notable of which is an increase in flexibility. Conclusion: When the students participated in the combined training of "Ba Duanjin" and "Yi Jin Jing", it was found that there was a significant increase in lung capacity, an increase in forward bending, and a significant decrease in BMI. However, there was no significant improvement in the 80 meters and 500 meters.

Abstract:Objectives The aim of this study is to comprehensively review empirical evidence on the effectiveness of Baduanjin exercise, one type of mind-body focused qigong exercise, on individuals' physical, cognitive, and mental well-being; outline potential mechanisms; and, suggest potential implication strategies for using Baduanjin in clinical practices and for future research. Methods Recent randomized-controlled studies and systematic reviews/meta-analyses published in English were searched in PubMed, PsycINFO, and Scopus up to July 2022. The search terms include Baduanjin and sleep, chronic illness, cognition, mental health, etc. We only selected papers that specifically studied the health effects of Baduanjin, excluding those that involved other forms of Qigong or other traditional Chinese medical practices. Since many RCT studies have already been included in the review papers that we selected, only those not covered in the review papers were selected to avoid repetition. Results 19 recent randomized-controlled studies and 8 systematic reviews were identified. In general, the effectiveness of Baduanjin exercise on individuals' physical, cognitive, and mental health is evident. Baduanjin has proven to be effective in improving sleep quality, including reducing difficulties in getting asleep and reducing daytime sleepiness. It also reduces fatigue and improves the quality of life for patients with other physical health issues, such as cancer, musculoskeletal pain, and chronic illnesses. The effectiveness of Baduanjin exercise is also evident in cognition, improving executive functions, and slowing down age-related cognitive deterioration. Similarly, Baduanjin alleviates various types of mental illnesses, increases patients' social competence, and enhances emotional regulation. Conclusion There is initial evidence on the safety and efficacy of Baduanjin in improving individuals' various aspects of health and well-being, suggesting that Baduanjin may serve as an effective adjunct to conventional treatments for a variety of clinical health benefits. More research is needed to confirm the efficacy and safety of Baduanjin in other non-Chinese ethnic populations.

Abstract:Background: Menstrual symptoms were the common complaints of international female students during the acculturation period, and the symptoms negatively affected the daily life and school performance of those women. The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the traditional Chinese Baduanjin exercise on reducing menstrual symptoms for international female students studying in China during the acculturation period. Methods: We conducted a randomized controlled trial among 62 international female students who suffered menstrual symptoms during the first 6 months after arriving in China. The study was carried out at three campuses of the two largest universities in the capital of a province in south-central China from March to October 2021. After screening, participants were randomly assigned to a control or intervention group. The intervention group engaged in 24 weeks of Baduanjin exercise for at least 30 min per day. The menstrual symptoms, sociocultural adaptation, perceived stress, and sleep quality were evaluated at baseline, the 12th week, and the 24th week. The chi-square test or Fisher's exact test, paired sample t -test, and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA)were adopted to analyze the data using SPSS 25.0. Results: Totally, 62 participants were enrolled in this study from 30 countries. Their mean age was 27.87 ± 5.58 years. None of the participants reported an adverse event. The results of the MANOVA test showed that the traditional Chinese Baduanjin exercise reduced the total score of MSQ among international female students (intervention: 47.83 ± 8.71 vs. control: 65.12 ± 16.86; F = 19.49, P < 0.01). In addition, the results of the MANOVA indicated statistically significant decreases in scores for the two subscales of MSQ: premenstrual symptoms (intervention: 17.07 ± 3.33 vs. control: 28.42 ± 7.56; F = 44.70, P < 0.01)and menstrual pain (16.03 ± 4.53 vs. 19.58 ± 5.14; F = 6.50, P < 0.05). Moreover, the results showed that traditional Chinese Baduanjin exercise reduced the scores of the sociocultural adaptation level, the perceived stress level, and sleep quality and improved the blood progesterone hormone and blood estrogen hormone. Conclusion: Regular Baduanjin exercise is a safe, acceptable, and effective form of exercise to promote international female students' menstrual health, reduce stress levels, and improve sleep quality. Effects of Basketball and Baduanjin Exercise Interventions on Problematic Smartphone Use and Mental Health among College Students: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Problematic smartphone use (PSU) has become a prevalent issue worldwide. Previous studies suggest that physical exercising may effectively reduce smartphone users’ addiction levels. Comparisons and further evaluations on the long-term effects of different types of exercise-based interventions on treating PSU remain to be investigated. Objective. We investigated if group-based basketball and Baduanjin exercise (a type of Qigong) would reduce PSU and improve the mental health of college students and whether such effects would be sustained. A twelve-week experiment was conducted, where 96 eligible Chinese college students with PSU were randomly assigned to two intervention arms (i.e., basketball and Baduanjin exercises) and a control arm. Outcome measures, including PSU (measured by the Mobile Phone Addiction Index in Chinese (MPAI)) and mental health indices for anxiety (measured by Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SRAS)), loneliness (measured by the short-form of the UCLA Loneliness Scale (UCLA-LS)), inadequacy (measured by the revised Janis and Field’s Feelings of Inadequacy Scale (FIS)), and stress (measured by the Chinese version of Perceived Stress Scale (CPSS)) were collected at the baseline, the end of week 12, and the two-month follow-up. A Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) model for longitudinal data was utilized in analyses. Results. Both exercise interventions demonstrated significant effects on decreasing PSU (basketball: p < 0.01 ; Baduanjin: p < 0.01 ), feelings of anxiety (basketball: p < 0.01 ; Baduanjin: p = 0.04 ), loneliness (basketball: p < 0.01 ; Baduanjin: p < 0.01 ), inadequacy (basketball: p < 0.01 ; Baduanjin: p < 0.01 ), and perceived stress (basketball: p < 0.01 ; Baduanjin: p = 0.04 ), at the end of interventions. At two months after interventions, both exercise interventions demonstrated significant effects on decreasing PSU (basketball: p < 0.05 ; Baduanjin: p < 0.05 ), feelings of anxiety (basketball: p < 0.01 ; Baduanjin: p = 0.03 ), loneliness (basketball: p < 0.01 ; Baduanjin: p < 0.01 ), and inadequacy (basketball: p < 0.01 ; Baduanjin: p = 0.01 ), but not for feeling of stress. Furthermore, group-based basketball demonstrated larger improvements for all these significant results on reducing PSU and meanwhile improving their related mental health parameters among college students.

Abstract:Background and purpose: Chinese mind-body exercise-Baduanjin has received increasing attention for health promotion among middle-aged and older adults in China, but there is a lack of high-quality evidence on its effectiveness. This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the effects of Baduanjin on physical function in middle-aged and older adults. Methods: Seven electronic databases were searched for articles published before 22 June 2021 with the keywords Baduanjin exercise combined with physical-function-related outcomes. Risk of bias was assessed in the included studies, and data were analyzed using Review Manager software V5.3. Results: Fifteen articles, including 14 randomized controlled trials, were included in this study. The results of the meta-analysis showed that Baduanjin significantly improved muscle strength (grip strength: SMD = 0.63, 95% CI 0.22 to 1.04, p = 0.003), balance ability (timed up-and-go test score: MD = -2.21, 95% CI -3.91 to -0.51, p = 0.01; one-leg stand test score: MD = 3.75, 95% CI 1.96 to 5.55, p < 0.0001; Berg balance scale score: MD = 4.16, 95% CI 2.49 to 5.83, p < 0.00001; strengthening Romberg's test result: SMD = 1.02, 95% CI 0.17 to 1.86, p = 0.02); and cardiorespiratory fitness (diastolic blood pressure: MD = -3.62, 95% CI -3.95 to -3.30, p < 0.00001; resting heart rate: MD = -1.30, 95% CI -1.57 to -1.03, p < 0.00001; step test: MD = 4.25, 95% CI 0.76 to 7.74, p = 0.02). No adverse events were reported. Conclusions: Baduanjin exercise may be an effective intervention to improve physical function in the middle-aged and elderly population. However, more RCTs with larger sample sizes and more rigorous research designs are needed in the future to confirm the results.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: To investigate the effectiveness of Baduanjin qigong combined with cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) on the physical fitness and psychological health of elderly housebound.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 120 elderly housebound were randomly divided into 3 intervention groups: Baduanjin training, Baduanjin training combined with CBT, and CBT. The interventions were conducted by means of home visits over 6 months. Spirometry, SF-36 health survey of quality of life, and Lawton and Brody Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale (IADL) were used to collect physical health data, and self-evaluation of overall health status, self-evaluation of loneliness, and short-form geriatric depression scale (GDS-15) were used to collect mental health data at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months after intervention. Data was analyzed by repeated measures analysis of variance (rANOVA) and chi-squared test (χ test).RESULTS: Forced vital capacity (FVC), maximum voluntary ventilation (MVV), quality of life (QOL), and self-reported health status were significantly increased (P < .05) in the group receiving joint Baduanjin and CBT intervention at 3 months and 6 months, as compared to the Baduanjin only group or the CBT only group. Activities of daily living (ADL), self-evaluated loneliness, and level of depression were significantly lowered (P < .05) in the group receiving joint Baduanjin and CBT intervention at 3 months and 6 months, as compared to the Baduanjin only group or the CBT only group.CONCLUSIONS: Physical and psychological statuses of elderly housebound were significantly improved by Baduanjin training combined with CBT. The effect of the combined intervention exceeded that of CBT or Baduanjin alone.

Abstract:Background: College students' physical fitness has declined over the past decades. Taichi Qigong exercise offers numerous health benefits and could serve as a suitable option for them. Traditional programs, however, are time-consuming and necessitate long-term commitments. Therefore, a more cost-effective intervention is needed. Methods: The study enrolled a total of 31 students who actively participated in a 5-week STQE program, consisting of three 60-minute sessions per week. Physical and mental health assessments included the Plank test, vital capacity measurement, 1000/800 m run test, standing jump, and the Zung Self-Rating Scale. Data analysis was performed using SPSS. Results: Following the STQE intervention, participants showed improvement in core strength (28.1 seconds in the Plank test, P = .025) and lower limb explosive force (6.52 cm in the standing jump test, P = .011), accompanied by a decrease in anxiety levels (a reduction of 3.41 in the Zung Self-Rating Scale, P = .039). However, no significant improvements were observed in cardiopulmonary endurance, as evidenced by a non-significant increase of 237.84 mL in vital capacity (P = .134) and a non-significant reduction of 1.6 seconds in the 1000/800 m run test (P = .764). Conclusion: The study suggests that the STQE program effectively improves core strength, lower limb explosive force, and reduces anxiety levels among university students.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: we used a quantitative method to systematically synthesize the emerging literature and critically evaluate the effects of Baduanjin on depression and anxiety in people with physical or mental illnesses. Additionally, we determined if the number of total Baduanjin training sessions is associated with decreased anxiety and depression levels.METHODS: both English and Chinese databases were searched for potential studies published between January 1982 and October 2017. The eligible randomized controlled trials were considered for meta-analysis. Effect size (Hedge's g) was computed for the pooled effects while the random-effect model was set. For moderator analysis; Subgroup meta-analysis for categorical variables and meta-regression for continuous variables were performed.RESULTS: the aggregated result has shown a significant benefit in favour of Baduanjin on anxiety (Hedge's g = -0.99; CI -1.63 to -0.74) and depression (Hedge's g = -1.07; CI -1.3 to -0.83). For continuous potential moderators; meta-regression indicated a significant effect for total hours in Baduanjin practice (β = -0.0053; 95% CI -0.009 to -0.0014; p = 0.008). With regard to depression; meta-regression indicated a significant effect for total sessions of Baduanjin practice (β = -0.0023; 95% CI -0.006 to -0.0004; p = 0.028).CONCLUSIONS: the encouraging findings indicate the efficacy of Baduanjin exercise in reducing depression and anxiety symptoms in people with physical or mental illnesses. However; the results should be interpreted with caution because of existing methodological limitations (e.g., high risk of bias; Baduanjin combined with other behavioral interventions; and heterogeneity of control groups).

Abstract:The current quasi-experimental study explored the effects of Baduanjin qigong on body mass index (BMI) and five metabolic indexes in people with schizophrenia. Inclusion criteria were body mass index >25 kg/m2 or metabolic syndrome. Twenty-two service users were recruited from a psychiatric center and were assigned to the experimental group (EG) or control group (CG) using blocked randomization. The EG performed Baduanjin qigong lasting 1 hour for 12 weeks three times per week, whereas the CG received routine care. Generalized estimating equations showed that the EG achieved a greater decrease in BMI and waist circumference (WC) than the CG post-intervention. Baduanjin qigong may provide an effective nonpharmacological approach to reducing BMI and WC in people with schizophrenia. This study showed that performing Baduanjin qigong for 12 weeks is a feasible and effective strategy for improving the body shape of individuals with chronic schizophrenia, thus providing results that can serve as a reference for health professionals working in psychiatry departments. Abstract:Acute exposure to high altitude elicits respiratory alkalosis, and this is partially corrected by renal compensation. To determine the time course and magnitude of renal compensation during short-term moderate altitude exposure, we measured urine gas tensions and acid-base status in 48 healthy men and women at four levels of simulated altitude exposures. Each subject was exposed in pseudorandom order to simulated altitudes of 1780, 2085, 2455, and 2800 m in a decompression chamber for 24 h, separated by 1 week at sea level. Fresh urine was collected anaerobically at sea level and after 6 and 24 h of each altitude exposure. Urine pH increased significantly (p < 0.01) after 6 h at all altitudes and returned to baseline values by 24 h at the lowest altitudes. In contrast, urine pH remained elevated at the highest altitudes. The mean value of urine HCO at sea level was 1.67 +/- 0.25 mmol/L, increased significantly after 6 h at all altitudes, and then returned to near baseline after 24 h at three lower altitudes (1780, 2085, and 2455 m). However, it remained elevated at 2800 m. PCO2 in urine was significantly increased after 6 h and returned to baseline after 24 h at all altitudes. These results suggest that (1) short-term low to moderate altitude exposure results in a marked HCO diuresis, which may be caused by inhibition of the secretion of renal tubular H+, and (2) renal HCO compensation was completed by 24 h at low to moderate altitude, but still incomplete at higher altitude.

Abstract:Integrative Cancer Therapies, Volume 21, Issue , January-December 2022. Background:Baduanjin exercise is a traditional Chinese Qigong exercise. This study aimed to investigate the effects of Baduanjin exercise on the quality of life and psychological status of postoperative patients with breast cancer.Methods:A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted. Eight databases were searched from inception to December 15, 2021, restricting the language to English and Chinese. RevMan5.3 software was employed for data analysis. This study was registered in PROSPERO, number CRD 42020222132.Results:A total of 7 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with 450 postoperative breast cancer patients with or without Baduanjin exercise were collected. Compared with the group without Baduanjin, those who practiced Baduanjin showed significant improvement in quality of life (WMD = 5.70, 95% CI 3.11-8.29, P < .0001). Subgroup analysis showed significant improvement in physical (WMD = 1.83, 95% CI 1.13-2.53, P < .00001) and functional well-being (WMD = 1.58, 95% CI 0.77-2.39, P = .0001), which were measured by the functional assessment of cancer therapy-breast (FACT-B). Subgroup analysis also showed that role-physical (WMD = 11.49, 95% CI 8.86-14.13, P < .00001) and vitality (WMD = 8.58, 95% CI 5.60-11.56, P < .00001) were significantly increased, as measured by a 36-item Short Form survey (SF-36). In terms of psychological health, Baduanjin exercise reduced patients' anxiety (WMD = −8.02, 95% CI −9.27 to −6.78, P < .00001) and depression (WMD = −4.45, 95% CI −5.62 to −3.28, P < .00001).Conclusions:Baduanjin is an effective exercise, which can significantly improve the quality of life and psychological health of breast cancer patients after operation.

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to investigate the emotion regulation effect of Baduanjin Qigong on college students. Methods: The late positive potential (LPP) components were recorded while performing emotional pictures from 12 college students with Baduanjin Qigong experience and 12 with no experience of any mind–body exercises. Results: Under positive emotional stimuli, greater LPP amplitudes were observed in the experimental group in the frontal, central, and temporal areas than in the control group. Under negative emotional stimuli, greater LPP amplitudes were found in the experimental group in the prefrontal area and smaller amplitudes in the occipital area than in the control group. Conclusion: The results reveal the emotion regulation effect on the event-related potential of Baduanjin Qigong to college students. The findings suggest that the regulatory effect of Baduanjin Qigong on emotional stimulation may be a possible reason for reducing the symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Abstract:Infiltration of leukocytes into premalignant tissue is a common feature of many epithelial neoplasms and is thought to contribute to cancer development. However, the molecular and cellular regulatory mechanisms underlying activation of innate host responses to enhanced neoplastic cell proliferation are largely unknown. Considering the importance of the complement system in regulating inflammation during acute pathologic tissue remodeling, we examined the functional significance of complement component 3 (C3) as a regulator of inflammatory cell infiltration and activation during malignant progression by using a transgenic mouse model of multistage epithelial carcinogenesis, e.g., HPV16 mice. Whereas abundant deposition of C3 is a characteristic feature of premalignant hyperplasias and dysplasias coincident with leukocyte infiltration in neoplastic tissue, genetic elimination of C3 neither affects inflammatory cell recruitment toward neoplastic skin nor impacts responding pathways downstream of inflammatory cell activation, e.g., keratinocyte hyperproliferation or angiogenesis. Taken together, these data suggest that complement-independent pathways are critical for leukocyte recruitment into neoplastic tissue and leukocyte-mediated potentiation of tumorigenesis.

Abstract:The purpose of this pilot study is to examine the effects of Tai Chi Quan, a body-mind harmony exercise, on college students' perceptions of their physical and mental health. A three-month intervention of Tai Chi exercise was administered to college students, and multidimensional physical (PHD) and mental (MHD) health scores were assessed using the SF-36v2 health survey questionnaire before and after the intervention. Thirty college students participated in a 1-hour-long Tai Chi exercise intervention twice a week for 3 months. Each practice session included 10 minutes of breathing and stretching exercises followed by 50 minutes of Tai Chi Quan 24-form practice. PHD including physical function (PF), role physical (RP), bodily pain (BP), general health (GH), and MHD including social function (SF), role mental/emotion function (RE), vitality (VT), perceptions of mental health (MH) were assessed. The normalized scores of each variable and the combined PHD or MHD scores before and after the Tai Chi intervention were examined by paired t-test ( p <0.05). Physical measures of BP and GH, and mental measures of RE, VT and MH were significantly improved after Tai Chi exercise intervention. When the overall PHD or MHD scores were evaluated, the MHD had increased significantly. In conclusion, Tai Chi exercise had positive effects on the self-assessed physical and mental health of college students. Scores on the mental health dimension appeared to be particularly sensitive to change. Colleges/universities might consider offering Tai Chi as a component of their ongoing physical activity programs available to students.
