Abstract:Interfaces exist in almost all objects and processes. Investigation on the interface not only is fundamentally important but also has great application prospects. Traditionally, the interface structure is studied by electron microscopy, which cannot reflect its real structure considering the pretreated process before measurement. Monitoring the interface evolution process by these regular methods is time-consuming and unfeasible in many cases. In this perspective article, we discuss how to realize the visualizing and monitoring interface structures and dynamics by aggregation-induced emission technique, which is applicable to almost all kinds of interfaces, including gas-solid, liquid-solid, solid-solid, gas-liquid-solid, and liquid-liquid-solid. Meanwhile, it is anticipated that the circularly polarized luminescence property in prochiral aggregation-induced emission luminogens can make a great difference in this area.

Abstract:Interfacial polymerization is a prevalent approach for synthesizing high-performance materials. However, monitoring the polymer growth during this process has posed significant challenges. To overcome this, we have harnessed the aggregation-induced emission effect to enable in situ and real-time observation of the entire interfacial polymerization process. By employing a confocal laser scanning microscope, we have acquired clear images of the polymer and characterized the evolution of its structural heterogeneity, utilizing the environmental sensitivity of the fluorescent AIE moiety. Intriguingly, our study revealed that the polymer density is higher away from the interface, in contrast to the expected homogeneity. The changing ratio of the two monomers in the reaction region accounts for this density gradient. Additionally, we have demonstrated the precise growth kinetics of the polymer under various conditions. Our results provide a novel platform for elucidating the mechanisms and properties of interfacial polymerization.

Abstract:Whereas chain aggregation commonly quenches light emission of conjugated polymers, we here report a phenomenon of aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE): luminescence of polyacetylenes is dramatically boosted by aggregate formation. Upon photoexcitation, poly(1-phenyl-1-alkyne)s and poly(diphenylacetylene)s emit blue and green lights, respectively, in dilute THF solutions. The polymers become more emissive when their chains are induced to aggregate by adding water into their THF solutions. The polymer emissions are also enhanced by increasing concentration and decreasing temperature. Lifetime measurements reveal that the excited species of the polymers become longer-lived in the aggregates. Conformational simulations suggest that the polymer chains contain n = 3 repeat units that facilitate the formation of intramolecular excimers. The AIEE effects of the polymers are rationalized to be caused by the restrictions of their intramolecular rotations by the aggregate formation.

Abstract:Aggregation generally quenches the light emissions of chromophoric molecules. In this review, we demonstrate that 1,1-disubstituted 2,3,4,5-tetraphenyl siloles and 2,5-difunctionalized siloles as well as their polymers exhibit the opposite behaviors. Instead of quenching, aggregation has greatly boosted their photoluminescence quantum yields by up to two orders of magnitude, turning them from faint fluorophores into strong emitters. Such “abnormal” phenomenon of “aggregation-induced emission (AIE)” is attributed to restricted intramolecular rotations of the peripheral phenyl rings against the central silole core, which block the nonradiative channel via the rotational energy relaxation processes and effectively populate the radiative decay of the excitons. Utilizing such a novel effect, siloles and their polymers find an array of applications as: sensors for chemicals, explosives, pH, and biomacromolecules (proteins, DNAs and RNAs), indicators for determining CMC and monitoring layer-by-layer self-assembling, biocompatible fluorogens for cell imaging, visualizing agent for DNA gel electrophoresis, biolabels for immunoassay, stimuli-responsive organic nanomaterials, magnetic fluorescent nanoparticles for potential bio-imaging and -separation, and outstanding materials for efficient OLEDs and PV cells.

Abstract:AbstractAn in‐depth understanding of dynamic interfacial self‐assembly processes is essential for a wide range of topics in theoretical physics, materials design, and biomedical research. However, direct monitoring of such processes is hampered by the poor imaging contrast of a thin interfacial layer. We report in situ imaging technology capable of selectively highlighting self‐assembly at the phase boundary in real time by employing the unique photophysical properties of aggregation‐induced emission. Its application to the study of breath‐figure formation, an immensely useful yet poorly understood phenomenon, provided a mechanistic model supported by direct visualization of all main steps and fully corroborated by simulation and theoretical analysis. This platform is expected to advance the understanding of the dynamic phase‐transition phenomena, offer insights into interfacial biological processes, and guide development of novel self‐assembly technologies.

Abstract:Over recent decades, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) molecules have attracted increasing attention. Restriction of intramolecular rotation (RIR) has been widely accepted as the cause of the emission when AIE molecules aggregate into clusters. The intramolecular rotation of AIE molecules can be monitored by molecular vibration spectra such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared, and Raman, especially surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) which has high sensitivity down to a single molecule. We employed SERS and NMR to study the AIE emission mechanism and compared experimental results with simulation data to monitor the RIR. Interestingly, we found that intramolecular rotation was also restricted for individual AIE molecules loaded onto SERS substrate surfaces due to the laid-down configuration.

Abstract:A new fluorescence technique for monitoring layer-by-layer self-assembling processes of polycations and polyanions is developed in this work. The fluorescent probe is a fluorogenic dye named 1,1-bis[p-(diethylaminomethyl)phenyl]-2,3,4,5-tetraphenylsilole (A2HPS). Whereas fluorescence of a “normal” fluorophore is often quenched by aggregate formation, the protonated salt of A2HPS, i.e., [H2A2HPS]2+, emits strong light in the suspensions of its nanoaggregates and in the solid films of its blends with poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDAC), thanks to its novel aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics. When ([H2A2HPS]2++PDDAC) cations and poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) anions were used to fabricate thin films via layer-by-layer deposition processes on quartz and glass substrates, the emission intensity of [H2A2HPS]2+ showed linear relationship with the number of ([H2A2HPS]2++PDDAC)/PSS bilayers, due to the uniform co-deposition of [H2A2HPS]2+ cations into the PDDAC/PSS bilayers. This proves that the AIE fluorophore is an excellent probe for monitoring the layer-by-layer self-assembling processes of the polyelectrolytes on various substrates.

Abstract:Alkaline-urea aqueous solvent system provides a novel and important approach for the utilization of polysaccharide. As one of the most important polysaccharide, chitosan can be well dissolved in this solvent system, and the resultant hydrogel material possesses unique and excellent properties. Thus the sound understanding of the gelation process is fundamentally important. However, current study of the gelation process is still limited due to the absence of direct observation and the lack of attention on the entire process. Here we show the entire gelation process of chitosan LiOH-urea aqueous system by aggregation-induced emission fluorescent imaging. Accompanied by other pseudo in situ investigations, we propose the mechanism of gelation process, focusing on the formation of junction points including hydrogen bonds and crystalline.

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is a novel photophysical phenomenon coined in 2001 by our group and describes the enhanced light emission of some luminogens in the aggregate or solid state. The combination of AIE research and polymer science is a smart approach to produce functional luminescent materials with mechanical strength and excellent processability for real-world applications. In this feature article, recent progress in AIE polymeric systems, including chemical synthesis and physical blending strategies, is summarized. Through chemical synthesis, various AIE-active polymers, such as covalently bonded polymers, supramolecular polymers, and nonconjugated luminescent polymers, can be obtained. Serving as environmentally sensitive probes, AIE luminogens can also be physically doped into polymers to generate interesting systems. Finally, outlooks and perspectives on the future direction of AIE polymeric systems are discussed.

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has been much employed for visualizing material aggregation and self-assembly. However, water is generally required for the preparation of the AIE aggregates, the operation of which limits numerous material processing behaviors. Employing hexathiobenzene-based small molecules, monopolymers, and block copolymers as different material prototypes, we herein achieve AIE in pure organic phases by applying a nonequilibrium strategy, photoexcitation-controlled aggregation. This strategy enabled a dynamic change of molecular conformation rather than chemical structure upon irradiation, leading to a continuous aggregation-dependent luminescent enhancement (up to ~200-fold increase of the luminescent quantum yield) in organic solvents. Accompanied by the materialization of the nonequilibrium strategy, photoconvertible self-assemblies with a steady-state characteristic can be achieved upon organic solvent processing. The visual monitoring with the luminescence change covered the whole solution-to-film transition, as well as the in situ photoprocessing of the solid-state materials.

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) technology has been demonstrated to be a facile approach for in-situ monitoring atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). A series of tertraphenyl ethylene (TPE)-containing alpha-bromo compounds were synthesized and applied as ATRP initiators. The photoluminescent (PL) emission of the polymerization system is proved to be sensitive to the local viscosity owing to the AIE characteristics of TPE. Linear relationships between the resulting molecular weight M-n and PL intensity were observed in several polymerization systems with different monomers, indicating the variability of this technique. Compared to physical blending, the chemical bonding of the TPE group in the chain end has higher sensitivity and accuracy to the polymer segments and the surrounding environment. This work promoted the combination of the AIE technique and controlled living radical polymerization, and introduced such an optical research platform to the ATRP polymerization process.

Abstract:The aggregation of molecules plays an important role in determining their function. Electron microscopy and other methods can only characterize the variation of microstructure, but are not capable of monitoring conformational changes. These techniques are also complicated, expensive and time-consuming. Here, we demonstrate a simple method to monitor in-situ and in real-time the conformational change of ( R )-1,1′-binaphthyl-based polymers during the aggregation process using circular dichroism. Based on results from molecular dynamics simulations and experimental circular dichroism measurements, polymers with “open” binaphthyl rings are found to show stronger aggregation-annihilated circular dichroism effects, with more negative torsion angles between the two naphthalene rings. In contrast, the polymers with “locked” rings show a more restrained aggregation-annihilated circular dichroism effect, with only a slight change of torsion angle. This work provides an approach to monitor molecular aggregation in a simple, accurate, and efficient way.

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) technology had already been applied in polymer science and provides a deeper understanding on polymer structure and formation processes. Here we prepared a copolymer of (2-(4-vinylphenyl)ethene-1,1,2-triyl)tribenzene (TPEE) and acrylonitrile (AN) (PTPEE- co -AN), which was utilized as the fluoresce probe for the monitoring of the electrostatic spinning process. Owing to the physical entanglement which restrincted the movement of TPE units, the PL intensity of the spinning solution increased with the increase of PAN in the solution. The viscosity and the concentration of PAN spinning solution was, therefore, could be monitored by PL intensity or by nake eyes. As the main component of fluoresce probes was PAN, the copolymer can be well integrated with spinning components, and has no impact on the electrospinning process. Moreover, the PTPEE-co-AN endowed photoluminescence properties to the formed fibers, as well as the fiber films. This method provides a new observation platform for the electrospinning process, and a variety of probes can be prepared through copolymerization to suit the spinning of different polymers.

Abstract:A novel chitosan-based fluorescent bioconjugate (TPE-CS) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristic is synthesized and used as a fluorescent probe for monitoring layer-by-layer self-assembly process of natural polyelectrolytes. QCM results and contact angle measurement indicate that this AIE active TPE-CS bioconjugate can be assembled with alginate (ALG) through layer-by-layer deposition. Ellipsometry and fluorescence (FL) spectroscopy show an exponential growth of the TPE-CS/ALG multilayer films. Moreover, the exponential relationship between the FL intensity and the number of bilayers, which is in accordance with the thickness variation of multilayer films, provides solid evidence for its capacity to monitor the layer-by-layer self-assembly process.

Abstract:<p>Polymerization at the liquid–liquid interface has attracted much attention for synthesizing ultrathin polymer films for molecular sieving. However, it remains a major challenge to conduct this process outside the alkane–water interface since it not only suffers water-caused side reactions but also is limited to water-soluble monomers. Here, we report the interfacial polymerization at the alkane/ionic liquid interface (IP@AILI) where the ionic liquid acts as the universal solvent for diversified amines to synthesize task-specific polyamide nanofilms. We propose that IP@AILI occurs when acyl chloride diffuses from the alkane into the ionic liquid instead of being triggered by the diffusion of amines as in the conventional alkane–water system, which is demonstrated by thermodynamic partitioning and kinetic monitoring. The prepared polyamide nanofilms with precisely adjustable pore sizes display unprecedented permeability and selectivity in various separation processes.</p>

Abstract:Precipitation polymerization is becoming increasingly popular in energy, environment and biomedicine. However, its proficient utilization highly relies on the mechanistic understanding of polymerization process. Now, a fluorescence self-reporting method based on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is used to shed light on the mechanism of precipitation polymerization. The nucleation and growth processes during the copolymerization of a vinyl-modified AIEgen, styrene, and maleic anhydride can be sensitively monitored in real time. The phase-separation and dynamic hardening processes can be clearly discerned by tracking fluorescence changes. Moreover, polymeric fluorescent particles (PFPs) with uniform and tunable sizes can be obtained in a self-stabilized manner. These PFPs exhibit biolabeling and photosensitizing abilities and are used as superior optical nanoagents for photo-controllable immunotherapy, indicative of their great potential in biomedical applications.

Abstract:It is found that the fluorescence of aliphatic poly(amido amine)s including linear and hyperbranched ones can be dramatically enhanced by simple aggregation of polymer chains, attributing to the formation of a variety of intra- and interchain clusters with shared lone-pair electrons and the restriction of intramolecular motions. Thanks to the combination of strong solid fluorescence and excellent biocompatibility, these non-conjugated polymers become promising candidates for bioimaging such as bacterial detection. This finding not only extends the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) systems from conjugated compounds to non-conjugated materials, which expands the bioapplication range of AIE systems, but also sheds light on the exploration of novel unconventional luminogens.
