Abstract:The multi‐electron reduction of CO 2 to hydrocarbons or alcohols is highly attractive in a sustainable energy economy, and the rational design of electrocatalysts is vital to achieve these reactions efficiently. Single‐atom electrocatalysts are promising candidates due to their well‐defined coordination configurations and unique electronic structures, which are critical for delivering high activity and selectivity and may accelerate the explorations of the activity origin at atomic level as well. Although much effort has been devoted to multi‐electron reduction of CO 2 on single‐atom electrocatalysts, there are still no reviews focusing on this emerging field and constructive perspectives are also urgent to be addressed. Herein recent advances in how to design efficient single‐atom electrocatalysts for multi‐electron reduction of CO 2 , with emphasis on strategies in regulating the interactions between active sites and key reaction intermediates, are summarized. Such interactions are crucial in designing active sites for optimizing the multi‐electron reduction steps and maximizing the catalytic performance. Different design strategies including regulation of metal centers, single‐atom alloys, non‐metal single‐atom catalysts, and tandem catalysts, are discussed accordingly. Finally, current challenges and future opportunities for deep electroreduction of CO 2 are proposed.

Abstract:Mimicking the natural photosynthesis, artificial photosynthesis of CO2 reduction into valuable hydrocarbon fuels is a promising approach to solar energy utilizatio and carbon neutrality. However, great challenges are present in the development of an efficient photocatalyst for CO2 reduction and the controlling of the selectivity of reduction products. This review summarizes the progress of photocatalyst design strategies to improve the efficiency and selectivity of photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Six popular modification methods are introduced, such as defect structure, cocatalst loading, doping heterojunction formation, single atom engineering, and surface organometallics catalysis. The effects of different strategies on the promotion of light absorption, charge separation and migration and catalyst surface reaction in the process of O2 reduction are analyzed. In addition, the latest research results of selective reduction to C1, C2, and C2+ in CO2 and H2O systems are summarized. Finally, the article delves into the future prospects and inherent hurdles in photocatalyst design with a focus on enhancing the selectivity of CO2 conversion towards specific products. This review provides an insight of the efficiency and selectivity in photocatalytic CO2 reduction across various photocatalysts, thereby serving as a a valuable guidance for the advancement of high-performance photocatalyst.

Abstract:Solar‐driven converting CO2 to value‐added chemicals can not only address the ever‐growing energy crisis, but also simultaneously mitigate CO2 emission. Although much progress has been made in the last decade, it still remains great challenge to achieve the efficient reduction of CO2 with desirable productivity and high product selectivity because CO2 is a thermodynamically stable and inert molecule with large bond energy. Design and synthesis of efficient catalyst play a pivotal role in promoting the activity and selectivity of photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Apart from the active sites engineering, manipulation of the charge separation and light harvesting efficiency or prolonging the lifetime of photogenerated carriers also greatly matters. Consequently, this review summarizes recent advances in photocatalyst design for CO2 conversion from two major aspects, namely active sites engineering and carriers lifespan prolonging. Firstly, we sort out the fundamental principles and merits of artificial photosynthesis in order to provide readers with a current snapshot of this rapidly developed field. Subsequently, various catalyst engineering strategies, including doping, alloying, Z‐scheme structure construction, are discussed in detail. Finally, some challenging issues as well as insights into the future development of artificial photosynthesis are presented.

Emerging hollow artificial photosynthetic system with S-scheme heterojunction sandwiched between layered redox cocatalysts for overall CO 2 reduction and H 2 O oxidation

Abstract:The development of artificial photosynthesis is challenged by nonstoichiometric photocatalytic reaction of CO 2 with H 2 O. Herein, a delicate hollow multi-shelled nanoreactor with S-scheme heterojunction sandwiched between layered noble-metal-free redox cocatalysts is fabricated, which exhibits excellent photocatalytic performance for overall CO 2 -to-CO reduction and H 2 O-to-O 2 oxidation with stoichiometric ratio of the evolved reduction and oxidation products. The synergy of the sandwiched heterojunction and spatially separated dual cocatalysts on the inner/outer sides: (i) promotes the separation and transfer of powerful photoexcited charges towards opposite directions; (ii) maneuvers the occurrence of surface redox reactions in different spaces through lowering the thermodynamic barriers, and (iii) hinders the occurrence of side reactions and photocorrosion on the semiconductor surface. Consequently, the charge separation, transfer and consumption are well balanced, and the photocatalytic activity, selectivity and stability are perfectly optimized. It is expected that this novel design can be extended to other semiconductor heterojunctions towards high-efficient photoredox catalysis.

Abstract:Photo-electrochemical (PEC) water splitting, as an essential and indispensable research branch of solar energy applications, has achieved increasing attention in the past decades. Between the two photoelectrodes, the photoanodes for PEC water oxidation are mostly studied for the facile selection of n-type semiconductors. Initially, the efficiency of the PEC process is rather limited, which mainly results from the existing drawbacks of photoanodes such as instability and serious charge-carrier recombination. To improve PEC performances, researchers gradually focus on exploring many strategies, among which engineering photoelectrodes with suitable cocatalysts is one of the most feasible and promising methods to lower reaction obstacles and boost PEC water splitting ability. Here, the basic principles, modules of the PEC system, evaluation parameters in PEC water oxidation reactions occurring on the surface of photoanodes, and the basic functions of cocatalysts on the promotion of PEC performance are demonstrated. Then, the key progress of cocatalyst design and construction applied to photoanodes for PEC oxygen evolution is emphatically introduced and the influences of different kinds of water oxidation cocatalysts are elucidated in detail. Finally, the outlook of highly active cocatalysts for the photosynthesis process is also included.

Abstract:Photocatalysis,which is the catalyzation of redox reactions via the use of energy obtained from light sources,is a topic that has garnered a lot of attention in recent years as a means of addressing the environmental and economic issues plaguing society today.Of particular interest are photosynthesis can potentially mimic a variety of vital reactions,many of which hold the key to develop sustainable energy economy.In light of this,many of the technological and procedural advancements that have recently occurred in the field are discussed in this review,namely those linked to:(1) photocatalysts made from metal oxides,nitride,and sulfides;(2) photocatalysis via polymeric carbon nitride(PCN);and(3) general advances and mechanistic insights related to TiO 2 -based catalysts.The challenges and opportunities that have arisen over the past few years are discussed in detail.Basic concepts and experimental procedures which could be useful for eventually overcoming the problems associated with photocatalysis are presented herein.

This review focuses on recent developments in construction of artificial photosynthesis systems. Special attention has been paid to the various kinds of transition metal complexes as photocatalysts employed in water oxidation as well as in CO2 photo-reduction reactions, the semi-reactions of artificial photosynthesis. The performances of various photocatalytic systems together with their related photocatalytic reaction mechanisms have been summarized and compared. The challenges of current studies and prospects for future development in artificial photosynthesis have also been suggested.

Abstract:Single-atom photocatalysts have demonstrated an enormous potential in producing value-added chemicals and/or fuels using sustainable and clean solar light to replace fossil fuels causing global energy and environmental issues. These photocatalysts not only exhibit outstanding activities, selectivity, and stabilities due to their distinct electronic structures and unsaturated coordination centers but also tremendously reduce the consumption of catalytic metals owing to the atomic dispersion of catalytic species. Besides, the single-atom active sites facilitate the elucidation of reaction mechanisms and understanding of the structure-performance relationships. Presently, apart from the well-known reactions (H2 production, N2 fixation, and CO2 conversion), various novel reactions are successfully catalyzed by single-atom photocatalysts possessing high efficiency, selectivity, and stability. In this contribution, we summarize and discuss the design and fabrication of single-atom photocatalysts for three different kinds of emerging reactions (i.e., reduction reactions, oxidation reactions, as well as redox reactions) to generate desirable chemicals and/or fuels. The relationships between the composition/structure of single-atom photocatalysts and their activity/selectivity/stability are explained in detail. Additionally, the insightful reaction mechanisms of single-atom photocatalysts are also introduced. Finally, we propose the possible opportunities in this area for the design and fabrication of brand-new high-performance single-atom photocatalysts.

Abstract:Solar‐light‐driven redox reactions, such as water splitting for hydrogen and oxygen evolution, and CO 2 reduction, have recently shown great promise toward solar‐to‐fuel conversion. Herein, the recent achievements in establishing interfacial interactions between cocatalysts and semiconducting light absorbers to improve the efficiency of these reactions are focused on. Four kinds of interactions are summarized to clarify the accelerated photogenerated charge carrier kinetics, thereby resulting in enhanced activity of these redox reactions. Especially, the coordination interaction formed by chemical linkage seems to be more preferred because of a well‐provided tunnel for charge transfer. The extended applications of these interfacial interactions to other challenging reactions, such as N 2 fixation and organic synthesis, are also predicted.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) stands out as a versatile transition‐metal oxide with applications ranging from energy conversion/storage and environmental remediation to sensors and optoelectronics. While extensively researched for these emerging applications, TiO2 has also achieved commercial success in various fields including paints, inks, pharmaceuticals, food additives, and advanced medicine. Thanks to the tunability of their structural, morphological, optical, and electronic characteristics, TiO2 nanomaterials are among the most researched engineering materials. Besides these inherent advantages, the low cost, low toxicity, and biocompatibility of TiO2 nanomaterials position them as a sustainable choice of functional materials for energy conversion. Although TiO2 is a classical photocatalyst well‐known for its structural stability and high surface activity, TiO2‐based photocatalysis is still an active area of research particularly in the context of catalyzing artificial photosynthesis. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the latest developments and emerging trends in TiO2 heterostructures and hybrids for artificial photosynthesis. We begin by discussing the common synthesis methods for TiO2 nanomaterials, including hydrothermal synthesis and sol‐gel synthesis. We then delve into TiO2 nanomaterials and their photocatalytic mechanisms, highlighting the key advancements that have been made in recent years. We discuss the strategies to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency of TiO2, including surface modification, doping modulation, heterojunction construction, and synergy of composite materials, with a specific emphasis on their applications in artificial photosynthesis. TiO2‐based heterostructures and hybrids present exciting opportunities for catalyzing solar fuel production, organic degradation, and CO2 reduction via artificial photosynthesis. This review offers an overview of the latest trends and advancements, while also highlighting the ongoing challenges and prospects for future developments in this classical yet rapidly evolving field. Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalysis is considered as a cutting-edge research topic for the production of value-added fuels and chemicals to confront the global energy crisis. In order to improve the solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency of pristine semiconductors, combining them with cocatalysts to form heterostructures has been extensively investigated. Among studied formulations, bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs), featuring enhanced light harvesting, efficient capture of photogenerated electrons and abundant surface active sites are ideal cocatalysts to improve the photocatalytic performance of semiconductor-based photocatalysts. In this review, we begin with a concise overview of representative synthesis and characterization methods of bimetallic NPs. Then, we predominantly summarize the typical applications of semiconductor/bimetallic NPs-based composites in photoredox catalysis, including hydrogen evolution, carbon dioxide reduction, selective organic synthesis and environmental remediation. In particular, we highlight the regulatory effects of parameters of bimetallic NPs (composition, structure, morphology, size, atomic arrangement, loading position, etc.) on the photocatalytic activity and selectivity. Finally, the remaining challenges and future perspectives for the utilization of bimetallic NPs in photoredox catalysis are discussed and anticipated to stimulate the sparkling ideas in the construction of high-efficiency semiconductor/bimetallic NPs-based photocatalytic systems.
Noble-Metal-Free Single- and Dual-Atom Catalysts for Artificial Photosynthesis

Abstract:Artificial photosynthesis enables direct solar-to-chemical energy conversion aimed at mitigating environmental pollution and producing solar fuels and chemicals in a green and sustainable approach, and efficient, robust, and low-cost photocatalysts are the heart of artificial photosynthesis systems. As an emerging new class of cocatalytic materials, single-atom catalysts (SACs) and dual-atom catalysts (DACs) have received a great deal of current attention due to their maximal atom utilization and unique photocatalytic properties, whereas noble-metal-free ones impart abundance, availability, and cost-effectiveness allowing for scalable implementation. This review outlines the fundamental principles and synthetic methods of SACs and DACs and summarizes the most recent advances in SACs (Co, Fe, Cu, Ni, Bi, Al, Sn, Er, La, Ba, etc.) and DACs (CuNi, FeCo, InCu, KNa, CoCo, CuCu, etc.) based on non-noble metals, confined on an arsenal of organic or inorganic substrates (polymeric carbon nitride, metal oxides, metal sulfides, metal-organic frameworks, carbon, etc.) acting as versatile scaffolds in solar-light-driven photocatalytic reactions, including hydrogen evolution, carbon dioxide reduction, methane conversion, organic synthesis, nitrogen fixation, hydrogen peroxide production, and environmental remediation. The review concludes with the challenges, opportunities, and future prospects of noble-metal-free SACs and DACs for artificial photosynthesis.

Abstract:Photoreduction of CO2 into valuable fuels using semiconductors has been known as a potential mean to simultaneously alleviate environmental and energy issues. Z‐scheme photocatalytic systems can realize spatial separation of photogenerated charges and ensure strong redox capability simultaneously. Particularly, the all‐solid‐state Z‐scheme photocatalysts for non aqueous redox mediators have been widely used for CO2 reduction. This review provides a comprehensive outlook of the essential components and recent advancements in all‐solid‐state Z‐scheme systems designed for the photocatalytic reduction of CO2, including indirect Z‐scheme, direct Z‐scheme system, and mechanism on Z‐scheme surface. Finally, a brief outlook on the challenges and novel courses within this domain is presented, which will give a rational guideline to improve the efficiency of hybrid photocatalysts for Z‐scheme CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Artificial photosynthetic solar‐to‐chemical cycles enable an entire environment to operate in a more complex, yet effective, way to perform natural photosynthesis. However, such artificial systems suffer from a lack of well‐established photocatalysts with the ability to harvest the solar spectrum and rich catalytic active‐site density. Benefiting from extensive experimental and theoretical investigations, this bottleneck may be overcome by devising a photocatalytic platform based on metal sulfides with predominant electronic, physical, and chemical properties. These tunable properties can endow them with abundant active sites, favorable light utilization, and expedited charge transportation for solar‐to‐chemical conversion. In this review, we describe how some vital lessons extracted from previous investigations are employed to promote the further development of metal sulfides for artificial photosynthesis, including water splitting, CO2 reduction, N2 reduction, and pollutant removal. Their functions, properties, synthetic strategies, emerging issues, design principles, and intrinsic functional mechanisms for photocatalytic redox reactions are discussed in detail. Abstract:Solar-light-driven CO2 conversion is a promising approach to the production of renewable fuels, yet the efficiencies are severely confined by the strong inertness of CO2 molecules and intrinsic drawbacks of semiconductor photocatalysts, such as the rapid charge recombination and infertile reactive sites. Considerable research efforts have been thus made to develop effective strategies to conquer the above-mentioned issues. The probing of atomic-level reactive sites on the surface of photocatalysts furthers the understanding on surface structural property relationship and CO2 photoreduction mechanism, which can provide reference and guideline for preparation and design of efficient semiconductor photocatalysts. In this review, we attempt to provide a comprehensive summary and update of fundamental understanding on surface reactive sites engineering for enhancing the efficiency and selectivity of photocatalytic CO2 reduction. It focuses mainly on recent progress in the creation and regulation of facet-dependent sites, surface lattice sites, surface grafting sites and co-strategies, especially their essential roles in promoting the key processes occurring in the CO2 photoreduction, including photoexcitation, charge separation and migration, adsorption and activation of CO2, and desorption of products. The perspectives and challenges of surface sites design of photocatalysts for CO2 reduction are outlooked as a conclusion.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 conversion into high-value chemicals is becoming an increasingly promising avenue of research in the quest for sustainable carbon resource utilization. Particularly, compounds with two or more carbons (C2+) have higher added value than methane, carbon monoxide, or formate, which are typically the major products of CO2 reduction. In this review, we present a detailed account of recent advancements in the field of photocatalytic CO2 conversion, with a specific focus on the synthesis of multi-carbon oxygenates. We systematically introduce the rational design of photocatalysts with high effectivity and selectivity, which follows a methodical inside-to-outside order. These strategies consider various aspects of photocatalyst optimization, from the core structure to the surface properties. Meanwhile, we delve into an in-depth analysis of the underlying catalytic mechanisms, particularly emphasizing the C-C coupling and multi-electron-coupled proton transfer processes. Lastly, we examine the prospects and challenges in developing photocatalysts for CO2 conversion, providing valuable insights for researchers and practitioners. Abstract:Photocatalytic conversion of CO2 into carbonaceous chemical fuels and building blocks is an intriguing strategy for solving fossil energy crisis and reducing CO2 emission. Recently, development of atomically dispersed catalytic sites for photocatalytic CO2 reduction has sparked tremendous interest as their coordinatively unsaturated states, tunable electronic structures and well-defined active sites provide versatile knobs for tuning CO2 conversion. While this Minireview mainly highlights recent key developments in this important research field and elucidates the common fundamentals behind various materials systems, it also provides insights into the future development and emphasizes opportunities and challenges.

Abstract:The utilization of CO2, H2O, and solar energy is regarded as a sustainable route for converting CO2 into chemical feedstocks, paving the way for carbon neutrality and reclamation. However, the simultaneous photocatalytic CO2 reduction and H2O oxidation under non-sacrificial ambient conditions is still a significant challenge. Researchers have carried out extensive exploration and achieved dramatic developments in this area. In this review, we first primarily elucidate the principles of two half-reactions in the photocatalytic conversion of CO2 with H2O, i. e., CO2 reduction by the photo-generated electrons and protons, and H2O oxidation by the photo-generated holes without sacrificial agents. Subsequently, the strategies to promote two half-reactions are summarized, including the vacancy/facet/morphology design, adjacent redox site construction, and Z-scheme heterojunction development. Finally, we present the advanced in situ characterizations and future perspectives in this field. This review aims to provide fresh insights into effectively simultaneous photocatalytic CO2 reduction and H2O oxidation under non-sacrificial ambient conditions.
