Abstract:Water splitting by electrolysis is an appealing pathway for sustainable hydrogen production. The practical performance of water splitting is highly dependent on the efficiency of electrocatalysts, which can promote the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) or cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Downsizing the metal nanostructures to atomic level to construct single-atom catalysts (SACs) has attracted enormous attention due to its distinct advantages in maximizing the efficiency of metal atom utilization and enhancing activity over corresponding metal nanoparticles. Research on SACs towards electrochemical water splitting application is an emerging field and intensive investigations have been focused on their rational syntheses and applications in HER/OER. In this review, we focus on the wet chemical method developed to prepare non-noble metal based SACs with an emphasis on the synthetic strategies and structure-activity relationship between single metal atoms and catalytic activity. Finally, the challenges and future opportunities for application of single-atom catalysts in water splitting are briefly addressed. Abstract:Dispersing active metals into theoretical atomic level has emerged as a cost-effective means for constructing catalysts, which are considered single-atom catalysts (SACs). SACs are integrated with various photocatalysts to serve as efficient platforms for solar energy conversion. Though SACs exhibit superior catalytic activity and selectivity owing to their maximum atomic utilization and high versatility of surrounding atomic configurations, the nature of SACs containing only one type of active site limits various chain reactions, inhibiting catalytic performance. To overcome these limitations, dual atom catalysts (DACs) have emerged as a new inventive material for boosting photocatalytic reactions. Thus, this review discusses the limitations of SACs and relative advantages of DACs, synthesis of dual atom sites on various substrates, identification of dual atomic sites through characterizations, and applications of DACs in various photocatalytic energy harvesting such as H 2 production, CO 2 reduction, and N 2 reduction. Finally, perspectives and future directions for increasing the photocatalytic performance of DACs-integrated photocatalysts are proposed.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction is mainly inspired by natural photosynthesis, which could convert CO2 into high value-added fuels or chemicals through the role of catalysts. However, the photocatalysis efficiency of the currently developed catalysts is far from meeting the actual needs due to the low efficiency of charge separation and energy transfer, and the poor adsorption and activation of CO2 by catalyst surface. Single-atom catalysts (SACS) show an excellent activity, selectivity and stability in many important reactions, and exhibit great potential in photocatalytic reduction of CO2 owing to their high atomic utilization and controllability of active sites. In the current review, recent progresses and challenges on SACs for photocatalytic CO2 conversion systems are presented. The key fundamental principles and reaction mechanisms focusing on charge separation/transfer and molecular adsorption/activation on single-atom photocatalysts for CO2 reduction are systemically explored. We outlined how single-atom active sites promote the photogenerated carriers separation/transfer and enhance molecular photoactivation. Besides, we put forward some challenges and prospects for the future development of single-atom photocatalysts in CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Single-atom photocatalysts (SACs) have received increasing attention due to the maximum atom-utilization efficiency and excellent catalytic activity on energy and environmental problems. However, it is still a great challenge to fabricate SACs and hinder their agglomeration during catalysis. In this review, the research progress and applications of SACs are deeply analyzed and summarized, including photocatalytic hydrogen (H 2 ) evolution, carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) reduction, nitrogen (N 2 ) reduction and organic synthesis, etc. The challenges in the future development of SACs and potential solutions are proposed to solve the problems of SACs. Moreover, the following outlooks for SACs in the photocatalytic field and popular supports for anchoring SACs are put forward. We hope this review will provide enlightenment for the research of SACs and promote the development of SACs in energy conversion and environmental purification.

Abstract:Artificial photocatalytic energy conversion represents a highly intriguing strategy for solving the energy crisis and environmental problems by directly harvesting solar energy. The development of efficient photocatalysts is the central task for pushing the real-world application of photocatalytic reactions. Due to the maximum atomic utilization efficiency and distinct advantages of outstanding catalytic activity, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have emerged as promising candidates for photocatalysts. In the current review, recent progresses and challenges on SACs for photocatalytic energy conversion systems are presented. Fundamental principles focusing on charge separation/transfer and molecular adsorption/activation for the single-atom photocatalysis are systemically explored. We outline how the isolated reactive sites facilitate the photogenerated electron–hole transfer and promote the construction of efficient photoactivation cycles. The widespread adoption of SACs in diverse photocatalytic reactions is also comprehensively introduced. By presenting these advances and addressing some future challenges with potential solutions related to the integral development of photocatalysis over SACs, we expect to shed some light on the forthcoming research of SACs for photocatalytic energy conversion.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have obtained a great deal of attention in many catalytic fields due to the high atom utilization efficiency and high catalytic activity. Recently, great achievements on SACs have been made for thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis which play an important role in obtaining value-added products. However, it remains a great challenge to fabricate SACs with high metal loading and investigate their reaction mechanisms. Therefore, it is necessary to highlight the recent development of SACs in these fields to guide future research. In this review, we overviewed the thermocatalysis applications of SACs in CO oxidation, preferential oxidation of CO, water-gas shift reaction, methane conversion, methanol steam reforming, aqueous-phase reforming of methanol, hydrogenation of alkynes and dienes, hydrogenation of CO, and hydrogenation of substituted nitroarenes. Moreover, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), and N2 reduction reaction (N2RR) for photocatalytic and electrocatalytic fields were also overviewed. Lastly, the opportunities and challenges of SACs were pointed out.

Abstract:Artificial photocatalysis represents a hopeful avenue for tackling the global crisis of environmental and energy sustainability. The crux of industrial application in photocatalysis lies in efficient photocatalysts that can inhibit the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, thereby boost the efficiency of chemical reactions. In the past decade, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have been growing extremely rapidly and have become the forefront of photocatalysis owing to their superior utilization of metal atoms and outstanding catalytic activity. In this work, we provide an overview of the latest advancements and challenges in SACs for photocatalysis, focusing on the photocatalytic mechanisms, encompassing the generation, separation, migration, and surface extraction of photogenerated carriers. We also explore the design, synthesis, and characterization of SACs and introduce the progress of SACs for photocatalytic applications, such as water splitting and CO2 reduction. Lastly, we offer our personal perspectives on the opportunities and challenges of SACs in photocatalysis, aiming to provide insights into the future studies of SACs for photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:The design and construction of high-performance catalysts can provide excellent opportunities for solving the challenges related to energy conversion and environmental pollution. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have recently emerged as promising alternatives to commercial catalysts in the fields of photo-/ electro-catalysis due to their unique electronic structure. Herein, we present a comprehensive review of significant breakthrough, remaining challenges, and perspectives regarding SACs in terms of catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability. We will first introduce the emergence and development of SACs. Subsequently, the recent advance in the synthesis of SACs with emphasis on available strategies and selected substrates, and corresponding characterization techniques will be summarized. The relationship between the electro-, photo-, and photoelectro-catalytic mechanism and the unique structures and coordination environment of the catalysts will be also discussed. Finally, we will highlight the challenges and opportunities related to SACs in the field of photo/electro-catalysis.

Abstract:The application of hydrogen energy is significant to meet the challenge of fossil energy depletion and carbon emission limitation. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution has been considered as a green and clean strategy for obtaining hydrogen. However, due to the high cost and limited efficiency, photocatalysis is only considered as one of the candidate methods for hydrogen production. Recently, several researchers have devoted to develop the single-atom catalysts (SACs) as promising cocatalysts and found great potential applications that are distributed across the fields of energy and environmental science. SACs exhibit several advantages, including abundant active sites, efficient photo-generated carrier recombination, atom-economic reaction mechanism, etc. In this synthetic review, we have summarized the advances of SACs in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Firstly, the synthesis strategies and characterization methods of SACs have been introduced. Then, the approaches for immobilizing prepared SACs on various supports have been elucidated. Finally, the photocatalytic activity of representative SACs-loaded supports has been analyzed, as well as the modification routes for enhancing performance. The review aims to record the development and applications of SACs in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. More studies are still required to clarify the mechanism of SACs based photocatalytic reactions, thus guiding the design of SACs-support system.

Abstract:Due to the expensive price and the low reserve of noble metals in nature, much attention has been paid to single-atom catalysts (SACs)—especially single-atom noble metal catalysts—owing to their maximum atomic utilization and dispersion. The emergence of SACs greatly decreases the amount of precious metals, improves the catalytic activity, and makes the catalytic process progressively economic and sustainable. However, the most remarkable challenge is the active sites and their stability against migration and aggregation under practical conditions. This review article summarizes the preparation strategies of SACs and their catalytic applications for the oxidation of methane, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and the reduction of nitrogen oxides. Furthermore, the perspectives and challenges of SACs in future research and practical applications are proposed. It is envisioned that the results summarized in this review will stimulate the interest of more researchers in developing SACs that are effective in catalyzing the reactions related to the environmental pollution control.

Abstract:In recent years, single-atom catalysts (SACs) with unique electronic structure and coordination environment have attracted much attention due to its maximum atomic efficiency in the catalysis fields. However, it is still a great challenge to rationally regulate the coordination environments of SACs and improve the loading of metal atoms for SACs during catalysis progress. Generally, carbon-based materials with excellent electrical conductivity and large specific surface area are widely used as catalyst supports to stabilize metal atoms. Meanwhile, carbon-based material-supported SACs have also been extensively studied and applied in various energy conversion reactions, such as hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), and nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). Herein, rational synthesis methods and advanced characterization techniques were introduced and summarized in this review. Then, the theoretical design strategies and construction methods for carbon-based material-supported SACs in electrocatalysis applications were fully discussed, which are of great significance for guiding the coordination regulation and improving the loading of SACs. In the end, the challenges and future perspectives of SACs were proposed, which could largely contribute to the development of single atom catalysts at the turning point.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs), in which the metal active sites are isolated on the support and stabilized by coordinated atoms such as oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, etc., represent the maximum usage efficiency of the metal atoms. Benefiting from the recent progress in synthetic strategies, characterization methods, and computational models, many SACs that deliver an impressive catalytic performance for a variety of reactions have been developed. The catalytic selectivity and activity are critical issues that need to be optimized and augmented in the areas of nanotechnology and biomedicine. This review summarizes some recent experimental and theoretical progress aimed at clarifying the structure of SACs and how they influence the catalytic performance. The examples described here elaborate on the utility of SACs and highlight the strengths of these catalysts in the applications of biomedicine, environmental protection, and energy conversion. Finally, some current challenges and future perspectives for SACs are also discussed.Some recent experimental and theoretical progress is summarized, aimed at clarifying the structure of single-atom catalysts and how they influence the catalytic performance.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Photocatalysis has problems such as low light absorption efficiency and rapid recombination of photo generated electron hole pairs. Many studies have been conducted to improve these issues. This review encapsulates the progress and applications of two pioneering research fields in catalysis: single-atom and two-dimensional (2D) material catalysts. The advent of this new class of catalysts, which integrates single atoms onto 2D materials, has seen remarkable significant growth in recent years, offering distinctive advantages. The article delves into the array of synthesis methods employed for loading single atoms onto 2D materials, including the wet chemical approach, atomic layer deposition technique, and thermal decomposition method. A highlight of the review is the superior attributes of single-atom catalysts supported on 2D materials (SACs-2D) in photocatalysis, such as extending the light absorption wavelength range, enhancing the efficiency of photo-generated electron-hole pair separation, and accelerating redox kinetics. The review meticulously examines the diverse applications of SACs-2D photocatalysis, which encompass water splitting for hydrogen generation, carbon dioxide reduction, degradation of organic pollutants, nitrogen fixation and hydrogen peroxide synthesis. These applications demonstrate the potential of SACs-2D materials in addressing pressing environmental and energy challenges. Finally, this article evaluates the current state of this burgeoning field, discussing the opportunities and challenges ahead.

Abstract:Limiting global carbon dioxide (CO2) emission is imperative to alleviate global warming and meet the growing energy demand. Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction is a promising approach for achieving this goal. The utilization of single atom-based catalysts (SACs) has garnered substantial attention in this particular field. Although noble metal SACs offer many advantages in CO2 reduction, their high cost and scarcity have deterred many researchers. Consequently, the focus has shifted toward low-priced transition metals, which have shown better performance than some rare metals. This comprehensive review focuses on the research advances in electrocatalysis for CO2 reduction reaction using SACs in the past five years. The main synthesis strategies of SACs in recent years are also summarized in detail. Furthermore, based on the difference in the catalytic performance and stability of different catalysts, the review summarizes the performance of non-noble metal SACs (such as Fe, Ni, Co, Mn, Cu, Sn, and Zn) with single metal sites in CO2 reduction reaction. The discussion of the potential mechanisms is included. Finally, the review ends by presenting an outlook on the difficulties and possibilities inherent in this developing area of single atom electrocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have been widely used in heterogeneous catalysis owing to the maximum utilization of metal-active sites with controlled structures and well-defined locations. Upon tailored coordination with nitrogen atom, the metal-nitrogen (M-N)-based SACs have demonstrated interesting physical, optical and electronic properties and have become intense in photocatalysis and electrocatalysis in the past decade. Despite substantial efforts in constructing various M–N-based SACs, the principles for modulating the intrinsic photocatalytic and electrocatalytic performance of their active sites and catalytic mechanism have not been sufficiently studied. Herein, the present review intends to shed some light on recent research made in studying the correlation between intrinsic electronic structure, catalytic mechanism, single-metal atom (SMA) confinement and their photocatalytic and electrocatalytic activities (conversion, selectivity, stability and etc). Based on the analysis of fundamentals of M–N-based SACs, theoretical calculations and experimental investigations, including synthetic methods and characterization techniques, are both included to provide an integral understanding of the underlying mechanisms behind improved coordination structure and observed activity. Finally, the challenges and perspectives for constructing highly active M–N based photocatalysis and electrocatalysis SACs are provided. In particular, extensive technical and mechanism aspects are thoroughly discussed, summarized and analyzed for promoting further advancement of M-N-based SACs in photocatalysis and electrocatalysis.

Single and dual metal atom catalysts for enhanced singlet oxygen generation and oxygen reduction reaction

Abstract:We demonstrate rational design of graphene-supported single and dual metal atom catalysts (SACs and DACs) for photocatalytic applications, such as singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) sensitization and H 2 O 2 production. Here we combine density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations with experimental verifications. We found a synergistic effect between triplet sensitization and triplet–triplet (Dexter) energy transfer; both play a role in the photocatalytic activity through the volcano plot of 3d transition metal SACs. More specifically, FeN 4 -SAC exhibits a low ISC energy gap (Δ E ISC ) of 0.039 eV, compared with 0.108 eV for FeNiN8-DACs, both possessing a high Bader charge transfer of 0.366 e − and 0.405 e − , respectively. Guided by these computational results, we synthesized a series of SACs and a DAC and confirmed their structures with scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) along with the X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). We then confirm their band structures with low-energy inverse photoemission spectroscopy (LEIPS) and UV-vis-NIR. Subsequently, we synthesized the catalysts for the photooxygenation of anthracene and two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) to measure their photocatalytic activity. We found that H 2 O 2 production through the two-electron ORR competes with the 1 O 2 generation through Dexter energy transfer. FeN 4 -SAC demonstrates a high photooxygenation conversion of 86% and a high 1 O 2 quantum yield of 1.04, obtained from electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy, with low H 2 O 2 production. In contrast, NiN 4 -SAC exhibits a low 1 O 2 generation and a high H 2 O 2 production mainly because of the high Gibbs free energy of the OOH* intermediate. This work proposes an effective DFT-guided strategy for designing SACs and DACs for various photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:Photoreduction of CO2 into value‐added chemicals and fuels is a promising green technology for solar‐to‐chemical conversion. Owing to the atom utilization, unique metal‐support interaction, and unsaturated coordination active sites, single‐atom catalysts (SACs) have been attracting great attention in achieving high activity and selectivity of CO2 photoreduction reactions. On the other hand, carbon nitride (C3N4) with abundant periodically unsaturated coordination of nitrogen atoms can serve as an excellent support for anchoring metal single atoms. In this context, extensive research efforts have been paid in C3N4‐based SACs for CO2 photoreduction in recent years. In this review, we report the recent advances in C3N4 supported SACs for CO2 photoreduction. We start from the introduction of synthetic strategies of various C3N4 supported metal SACs. Secondly, the main advanced characterization techniques and calculation methods for identifying the single‐atoms and their coordination environments of C3N4‐based SACs are summarized. Thirdly, some state‐of‐the‐art works on the rational design of C3N4‐based SACs and their applications in CO2 photoreduction are introduced. Lastly, we briefly summarize the main challenges and propose important perspectives of C3N4‐based SACs in CO2 photoreduction. This review is expected to provide some useful guidelines for the development of efficient and stable C3N4‐based SACs for CO2 photoreduction.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have received tremendous attention due to their extraordinary catalytic performances. The synthesis of this kind of catalysts is highly desired and challenging. In the last few years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been demonstrated as a promising precursor for fabricating SACs. In this review, the progress and recent advances in the synthesis of MOF-derived SACs and their electrochemical applications are summarized. First, the synthetic approaches based on MOFs and accessible characterization techniques for SACs as well as their advantages/disadvantages are discussed. Then, the electrochemical applications of these MOF-derived SACs including the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR), nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), and other energy-related reactions are reviewed. Finally, insights into the current challenges and future prospects of this field are briefly presented.

Abstract:Carbon-based materials are widely employed as metal-free catalysts or supports in catalysis, energy, and ecological applications because of their interesting properties. Generally, their high surface areas, size, shape, porosity, and the possibility of incorporating additional moieties through chemical functional designs are believed to be essential for enriching the catalytic activity of carbon-containing materials. Lately, the new field of single-atom catalysts (SACs) has emerged as the finest alternative for not only homogeneous but also heterogeneous catalysts used in various kinds of catalytic applications. Among a variety of SACs, carbon-based SACs are widely investigated catalysts because of their extraordinary features such as tunable morphologies, ordered porosity, and effortless immobilization through various metals (noble and non-noble), making them highly efficient single-atom catalysts for numerous important catalytic applications. Herein, we intend to report on the progress achieved in researching carbon-based single-atom catalysts, including primarily metals such as Co, Cu, Zn, Pd, Ni, Pt, among others, embedded in carbon matrices and applied to applications in organic catalysis, photocatalysis, and electrocatalysis. It is important to point out that the main focus of this Review is directed to the activity and applications of single-atom catalysts, which are discussed in detail; thus, characterization and rationalization are excluded. Finally, we provide a future perspective on the development and progress made on a carbon-based single metal atom for catalysis.

Abstract:This review summarizes the research progress of single‐atom catalysts (SACs) for electrocatalytic, photocatalytic, and thermocatalytic CO2 reduction, and the strategies of upgrading CO2 reduction performance. The type, structure, and synthesis of SACs are introduced, and the current challenges and future prospects are provided, with the purpose for presenting a deep insight and guideline for future researches to wards SACs. Continuous consumption of fossil energy and excessive CO2 emission severely restrict human society. Sustainable carbon cycle is a promising technology to simultaneously relieve greenhouse effect and energy crisis based on electrocatalysis and photocatalysis. However, the energy conversion efficiency is confined by the poor carriers utilization and insufficient reactive sites. Single‐atom catalysts (SACs) display outstanding performance in effectively overcoming the aforementioned problems. Herein, recent advances of SACs for enhancing the efficiency, selectivity, and long‐range stability of CO2 reduction are provided. First, the characteristics of SACs have been introduced in detail to provide rational design for SACs based on the relationship between structure and performance, including type, structure, and synthesis of SACs. Then, the high performance of SACs in electrocatalytic, photocatalytic, and thermocatalytic CO2 reduction has been discussed for disclosing reaction mechanism, such as charge transfer, activation barriers, and reaction pathway. In particular, the strategies of enhancing CO2 reduction performance have been summarized to provide deep insight into designing and developing more efficient SACs. Finally, an outlook on the current challenges and perspectives of SACs for electrocatalytic, photocatalytic, and thermocatalytic CO2 reduction is proposed. This review aims to provide a systematic reference for developing SACs in advanced CO2 catalytic conversion.
