Abstract:Soon, new experiments at FNAL and J-PARC will measure the muon anomalous magnetic moments with better accuracy than before. From theoretical side, the uncertainty of the standard model prediction is dominated by the hadronic contributions. Muon g-2 and a Geocentric New Field

Abstract:Light scalars can in principle couple to both bulk matter and fermion spin, with hierarchically disparate strengths. Storage ring measurements of fermion electromagnetic moments via spin precession can be sensitive to such a force, sourced by Earth. We discuss how this force could lead to the current deviation of the measured muon anomalous magnetic moment, g-2, from the standard model prediction. Due to its different parameters, the proposed J-PARC muon g-2 experiment can provide a direct test of our hypothesis. A future search for the proton electric dipole moment can have good sensitivity for the coupling of the assumed scalar to nucleon spin. We also argue that supernova constraints on the axion-muon coupling may not be applicable in our framework.

Abstract:Abstract The new experiment data of muon g − 2 is reported by the workers at Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL). Combined with the previous Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) E821 result, the departure from the standard model prediction is about 4.2σ. It strengthens our faith in the new physics. U(1)XSSM is the U(1) extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model, where we study the electroweak corrections to the anomalous magnetic dipole moment of muon from the one-loop diagrams and some two-loop diagrams possessing important contributions. These two-loop diagrams include Barr-Zee type, rainbow type and diamond type. The virtual supersymmetric particles in these two-loop diagrams are chargino, scalar neutrino, neutralino, scalar lepton, which are supposed not very heavy to make relatively large corrections. We obtain the Wilson coefficients of the dimension 6 operators inducing the anomalous magnetic dipole moment of muon. The numerical results can reach 25 × 10−10 and even larger.

Abstract:Motivated by the long-standing discrepancy between the Standard Model prediction and the experimental measurement of the muon magnetic dipole moment, we have recently proposed to interpret this muon anomaly in terms of the loop effect induced by a new massive spin-2 field G . In the present paper, we investigate the unitarity bounds on this scenario. We calculate the s -wave projected amplitudes for two-body elastic scatterings of charged leptons and photons mediated by G at high energies for all possible initial and final helicity states. By imposing the condition of the perturbative unitarity, we obtain the analytic constraints on the charged-lepton- G and photon- G couplings. We then apply our results to constrain the parameter space relevant to the explanation of the muon anomaly.

Abstract:The E989 Muon $g-2$ Experiment at Fermilab aims to measure the muon magnetic anomaly, $a_\mu$, to an unprecedented precision of 140 parts per billion (ppb), representing a four-fold improvement over the current best measurement, achieved at Brookhaven National Lab. There stands a greater than 3 standard deviations discrepancy between the Brookhaven measurement of $a_\mu$ and the theoretical value predicted using the Standard Model. The Fermilab experiment seeks to either resolve or confirm this discrepancy, which is suggestive of new physics interactions. To achieve the E989 target precision, the anomalous precession frequency of muons in a magnetic storage ring must be determined with a systematic uncertainty below 70\,ppb, and the average magnetic field experienced by these stored muons must be known equally well. The muon anomalous precession frequency is imprinted on the time-dependent energy distribution of decay positrons observed by 24 electromagnetic calorimeters. A suite of pulsed NMR probes continually monitors the magnetic field. This document presents the current status of the Fermilab experiment while emphasizing the ongoing analysis of the 2018 Run 1 dataset and the systematic effects that complicate it.

Abstract:Precision measurements of fundamental quantities have played a key role in pointing the way forward in developing our understanding of the universe. Though the enormously successful Standard Model (SM) describes the breadth of both historical and modern experimental particle physics data, it is necessarily incomplete. The muon $g-2$ experiment executed at Brookhaven concluded in 2001 and measured a discrepancy of more than three standard deviations compared to the Standard Model calculation. Arguably, this remains the strongest hint of physics beyond the SM. A new initiative at Fermilab is under construction to improve the experimental accuracy four-fold. The current status is presented here.

Abstract:Recent studies have proposed using a geocentric muon spin force to account for the $(g-2)_\mu$ anomaly, with the long-range force mediator being a light axion-like particle. The mediator exhibits a CP-violating scalar coupling to nucleons and a normal derivative coupling to muons. Due to the weak symmetry, this axion inevitably couples to neutrinos, providing potential impact on neutrino oscillations. By utilizing neutrino data from BOREXINO, IceCube DeepCore, Super-Kamiokande, and SNO, we have identified that both atmospheric and solar neutrino data can impose stringent constraints on the long-range muon spin force model and the $(g-2)_\mu$ parameter space. With optimized data analysis techniques and the potential from future experiments, such as JUNO, Hyper-Kamiokande, SNO+, and IceCube PINGU, there exists a promising opportunity to achieve even greater sensitivities. Indeed, neutrino oscillations offer a robust and distinctive cross-check for the model, offering stringent constraints on the $(g-2)_\mu$ parameter space.

Abstract:The recent measurement of the muon $g$-2 at Fermilab confirms the previous Brookhaven result. The leading hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution to the muon $g$-2 represents a crucial ingredient to establish if the Standard Model prediction differs from the experimental value. A recent lattice QCD result by the BMW collaboration shows a tension with the low-energy $e^+e^- \to \text{hadrons}$ data which are currently used to determine the HVP contribution. We refer to this tension as the new muon $g$-2 puzzle. In this Letter we consider the possibility that new physics contributes to the $e^+e^- \to \text{hadrons}$ cross-section. This scenario could, in principle, solve the new muon $g$-2 puzzle. However, we show that this solution is excluded by a number of experimental constraints.

The Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment in the Excited Fermion Paradigm

Abstract:Extensions of the Standard Model featuring excited fermions present an interesting framework that motivates the search for exotic particles at the LHC. Additionally, these extensions offer potential explanations for the muon's anomalous magnetic moment and other precision observables, shedding light on the energy scale and key parameters of the new theory. Our analysis focuses on the one-loop radiative correction originating from excited lepton doublet and triplet states using the effective Lagrangian approach. The bounds derived from the $(g-2)_\mu$ anomaly can be complemented with the ones arising from other observables like the electroweak precision observable $\Delta \rho$ and the signals from direct LHC searches to constraint the effective theory. Our results suggest that the $(g-2)_\mu$ anomaly can be addressed within a very narrow region of the effective theory scale. Consequently, this imposes indirect constraints on the parameter space of excited fermions.

Abstract:The longstanding muon $(g-2)$ anomaly, as well as the persistent hints of lepton flavor universality violation in $B$-meson decays, could be signaling new physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). A minimal $R$-parity-violating supersymmetric framework with light third-generation sfermions (dubbed as 'RPV3') provides a compelling solution to these flavor anomalies, while simultaneously addressing other pressing issues of the SM. We propose a new RPV3 scenario for the solution of the muon $(g-2)$ anomaly, which leads to an interesting LHC signal of $\mu^+\mu^-\tau^+\tau^-$ final state. We analyze the Run-2 LHC multilepton data to derive stringent constraints on the sneutrino mass and the relevant RPV coupling in this scenario. We then propose dedicated selection strategies to improve the bound even with the existing dataset. We also show that the high-luminosity LHC will completely cover the remaining muon $(g-2)$-preferred parameter space, thus providing a robust, independent test of the muon $(g-2)$ anomaly.

New results from the Muon g-2 Experiment

Abstract:The Muon g-2 experiment at Fermilab has published the first result on Run-1 dataset in 2021 showing a good agreement with the previous experimental result at Brookhaven National Laboratory at comparable precision (0.46 ppm). In August 2023 we released our new result from Run-2 and Run-3 datasets which allowed to measure $a_\mu$ to 0.21 ppm, a more than two-fold improved precision respect to Run-1, and which allowed to reach a precision of 0.20 ppm when combined with the Run-1 result. We will discuss the improvements of the Run-2/3 analysis respect to Run-1, the current status of the theory prediction, and the future prospects.

Abstract:The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon can be both measured and computed to a very high precision, making it a powerful probe to test the Standard Model and search for new physics. The previous measurement by the Brookhaven E821 experiment found a discrepancy from the SM predicted value of about three standard deviations. The Muon g–2 experiment at Fermilab will improve the precision to 140 parts per billion compared to 540 parts per billion of E821 by increasing statistics and using upgraded apparatus. The first run of data taking has been accomplished in Fermilab, where the same level of statistics as E821 has already been attained. This paper, summarizes the current experimental status and briefly describes the data quality of the first run. It compares the statistics of this run with E821 and discusses the future outlook.

Abstract:The current status of the experimental measurements and theoretical predictions of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon $a_\mu$ is briefly reviewed. The emphasis is put on the evaluation of the hadronic contribution to $a_\mu$ as it has the largest uncertainty among all Standard Model contributions. The precision of the hadronic contribution is driven by the input e+e- data predominantly from the \pi+pi- channel. Including the latest experimental data on e+e- annihilation into hadronsfrom CMD2 and SND for the \pi+\pi- channel and BaBar for multihadron final states, the updated Standard Model prediction disagrees with the measurement dominated by BNL by 3.3 standard deviations, with the theoretical precision exceeding the experimental one.

Muon g − 2 from millicharged hidden confining sector

Abstract:A bstract We provide a novel explanation to the muon g − 2 excess with new physics contributions at the two-loop level. In this scenario, light millicharged particles are introduced to modify the photon vacuum polarization that contributes to muon g − 2 at one additional loop. The muon g − 2 excess can be explained with the millicharged particle mass m χ around 10 MeV and the product of the multiplicity factor and millicharge squared of N χ ε 2 ∼ 10 − 3 . The minimal model faces severe constraints from direct searches at fixed-target experiments and astrophysical observables. However, if the millicharged particles are also charged under a hidden confining gauge group SU( N χ ) with a confinement scale of MeV, hidden-sector hadrons are unstable and can decay into neutrinos, which makes this scenario consistent with existing constraints. This explanation can be well tested at low-energy lepton colliders such as BESIII and Belle II as well as other proposed fixed-target experiments.

Abstract:The debate about how antimatter or different antimatter systems behave gravitationally will be ultimately decided by experiments measuring directly the acceleration of various antimatter probes in the gravitational field of the Earth or perhaps redshift effects in antimatter atoms caused by the annual variation of the Sun's gravitational potential at the location of the Earth. Muonium atoms may be used to probe the gravitational interaction of leptonic, second generation antimatter. We discuss the progress of our work towards enabling such experiments with muonium.
Probing new physics for $(g-2)_\mu$ and gravitational waves

Abstract: We study the possibility of probing new physics accounting for $(g-2)_\mu$ anomaly and gravitational waves with pulsar timing array measurements. The model we consider is either a light gauge boson or neutral scalar interacting with muons. We show that the parameter spaces of dark $U(1)$ model with kinetic mixing explaining $(g-2)_\mu$ anomaly can realize a first-order phase transition, and the yield-produced gravitational wave may address the common red noise observed in the NANOGrav 12.5-yr dataset.
New Experiments to Measure the Muon Anomalous Gyromagnetic Moment

Abstract:The magnetic moment is a fundamental property of particles. The measurement of these magnetic moments and the comparison with the values predicted by the standard model of particle physics is a way to test our understanding of the fundamental building blocks of our world. In some cases, such as for the electron, this comparison has resulted in confirmation of the standard model with incredible precision. In contrast, the magnetic moment of the muon has shown a long-standing disagreement in the measured and the predicted value. There is currently a tantalizing three-standard-deviation difference between the current best measurement (with a precision of 0.54 ppm) and the state-of-the-art standard model prediction. This represents one of the very few experimental hints for physics beyond the standard model. There are currently two major experimental efforts underway to improve the precision of the muon magnetic moment measurement. The first is an evolution of the E-821 experiment, originally located at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the United States. This is experiment, E-989, is located at Fermilab and will measure the spin precession rate of positive muons in a 14-m diameter storage ring using decay positrons. The goal of the experiment is to reduce the current experimental uncertainty by a factor of three. The experiment is currently being constructed and aims to start taking data in 2017. An alternative, and very complementary, experiment is being planned at J-PARC in Japan. This experiment, E-34, will utilize low energy, ultra-cold muons in a much smaller storage ring. This experiment aims for a similar precision to the Fermilab experiment and aims to begin data taking on a similar timescale.

Abstract:The Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory has measured the anomalous precession frequency $a^{}_\mu = (g^{}_\mu-2)/2$ of the muon to a combined precision of 0.46 parts per million with data collected during its first physics run in 2018. This paper documents the measurement of the magnetic field in the muon storage ring. The magnetic field is monitored by nuclear magnetic resonance systems and calibrated in terms of the equivalent proton spin precession frequency in a spherical water sample at 34.7$^\circ$C. The measured field is weighted by the muon distribution resulting in $\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$, the denominator in the ratio $\omega^{}_a$/$\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$ that together with known fundamental constants yields $a^{}_\mu$. The reported uncertainty on $\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$ for the Run-1 data set is 114 ppb consisting of uncertainty contributions from frequency extraction, calibration, mapping, tracking, and averaging of 56 ppb, and contributions from fast transient fields of 99 ppb.
