Abstract:Recent studies have proposed using a geocentric muon spin force to account for the $(g-2)_\mu$ anomaly, with the long-range force mediator being a light axion-like particle. The mediator exhibits a CP-violating scalar coupling to nucleons and a normal derivative coupling to muons. Due to the weak symmetry, this axion inevitably couples to neutrinos, providing potential impact on neutrino oscillations. By utilizing neutrino data from BOREXINO, IceCube DeepCore, Super-Kamiokande, and SNO, we have identified that both atmospheric and solar neutrino data can impose stringent constraints on the long-range muon spin force model and the $(g-2)_\mu$ parameter space. With optimized data analysis techniques and the potential from future experiments, such as JUNO, Hyper-Kamiokande, SNO+, and IceCube PINGU, there exists a promising opportunity to achieve even greater sensitivities. Indeed, neutrino oscillations offer a robust and distinctive cross-check for the model, offering stringent constraints on the $(g-2)_\mu$ parameter space.

Abstract:The general relativistic effects to the anomalous magnetic moment of muons moving in the Earth's gravitational field have been examined. The Dirac equation generalized to include the general relativity suggests the magnetic moment of fermions measured on the ground level is influenced by the Earth's gravitational field as $\mu_{\rm m}^{\rm eff} \!\simeq\! (1\!+\!3\phi/c^2)\,\mu_{\rm m}$, where $\mu_{\rm m}$ is the magnetic moment in the flat spacetime and $\phi\!=\!-{G M}/{r}$ is the Earth's gravitational potential. It implies that the muon anomalous magnetic moment measured on the Earth $a_\mu\!\equiv\!{\rm g}_\mu/2\!-\!1$ contains the gravitational correction of $\left\vert a_\mu\right\vert\simeq 2.1\!\times\! 10^{-9}$ in addition to the quantum radiative corrections. The gravitationally induced anomaly may affect the comparison between the theoretical and experimental values recently reported: $a_{\mu({\rm EXP})}-a_{\mu({\rm SM})}=28.8\,\,(8.0)\times10^{-10}\,\,(3.6\,\sigma)$. In this paper, the comparison between the theory and the experiment is examined by considering the influence of the spacetime curvature to the measurement on the muon ${\rm g}_\mu\!\!-\!2$ experiment using the storage ring on the basis of the general relativity up to the post-Newtonian order of $O(1/c^2)$.

Abstract:Two prominent efforts aimed at probing beyond Standard Model physics, searches for a neutron electric dipole moment (EDM) and measurements of the muon $g-2$ anomalous magnetic moment, employ spin precession techniques. In the most recent neutron EDM experiment, frequency shifts induced by magnetic field gradients and $\mathbf{E} \times \mathbf{v}$ motional fields were a significant source of systematic error. We consider the possibility of a similar effect in the most recent muon $g-2$ experiment, and find that such an effect could potentially be as large as $\sim 1$ ppm fractional error, to be compared with the reported $\sim 0.5$ ppm error.

Abstract:Motivated by the long-standing discrepancy between the Standard Model prediction and the experimental measurement of the muon magnetic dipole moment, we have recently proposed to interpret this muon anomaly in terms of the loop effect induced by a new massive spin-2 field G . In the present paper, we investigate the unitarity bounds on this scenario. We calculate the s -wave projected amplitudes for two-body elastic scatterings of charged leptons and photons mediated by G at high energies for all possible initial and final helicity states. By imposing the condition of the perturbative unitarity, we obtain the analytic constraints on the charged-lepton- G and photon- G couplings. We then apply our results to constrain the parameter space relevant to the explanation of the muon anomaly.

Abstract:Extensions of the Standard Model featuring excited fermions present an interesting framework that motivates the search for exotic particles at the LHC. Additionally, these extensions offer potential explanations for the muon's anomalous magnetic moment and other precision observables, shedding light on the energy scale and key parameters of the new theory. Our analysis focuses on the one-loop radiative correction originating from excited lepton doublet and triplet states using the effective Lagrangian approach. The bounds derived from the $(g-2)_\mu$ anomaly can be complemented with the ones arising from other observables like the electroweak precision observable $\Delta \rho$ and the signals from direct LHC searches to constraint the effective theory. Our results suggest that the $(g-2)_\mu$ anomaly can be addressed within a very narrow region of the effective theory scale. Consequently, this imposes indirect constraints on the parameter space of excited fermions.

Abstract:The ideas and formulas presented in the article will help to bring together the theoretical predictions for the anomalous magnetic moment of muon and the results of the "Muon g-2" experiment. In doing so, we are discussing the new effect exclusively within the Standard Model. In quantum physics a state with spin perpendicular to a magnetic field can be expressed as a superposition of energy eigenstates with spins parallel and antiparallel to the field: the resultant spin precession is due to the energy difference between the two eigenstates. If the state, like the muon, is unstable and can decay, it will have a natural energy spread. As a result the frequency of the spin precession can vary. For a constant magnetic field the measured spin precession velocity will be spread according to the Lorentzian distribution with width $\left(\gamma\tau\right)^{-1}$, for Lorentz gamma factor $\gamma=E/ m$, and particle lifetime $\tau$. Although the true mean and variance of a Lorentzian distribution is undefined, the latter can be estimated by the maximum likelihood method to be ${2 \over N (\gamma \tau)^2}$, twice that of a normal distribution. Thus, the statistical error on the anomalous magnetic moment in reality should turn out to be wider than with $\chi^2$ analysis of the experiment.

Abstract:Abstract The new experiment data of muon g − 2 is reported by the workers at Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL). Combined with the previous Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) E821 result, the departure from the standard model prediction is about 4.2σ. It strengthens our faith in the new physics. U(1)XSSM is the U(1) extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model, where we study the electroweak corrections to the anomalous magnetic dipole moment of muon from the one-loop diagrams and some two-loop diagrams possessing important contributions. These two-loop diagrams include Barr-Zee type, rainbow type and diamond type. The virtual supersymmetric particles in these two-loop diagrams are chargino, scalar neutrino, neutralino, scalar lepton, which are supposed not very heavy to make relatively large corrections. We obtain the Wilson coefficients of the dimension 6 operators inducing the anomalous magnetic dipole moment of muon. The numerical results can reach 25 × 10−10 and even larger.

Abstract:The muon's magnetic moment is a fundamental quantity in particle physics and the deviation of its value from quantum electrodynamics (QED), motivates research beyond the standard models (SM). In this study, we utilize the effective coupling of right-handed sterile neutrinos with SM gauge bosons to calculate the muon anomalous magnetic moment ($\boldsymbol{\mu}$AMM) at one-loop level. The contribution of the sterile neutrino interactions on the $\boldsymbol{\mu}$AMM is calculated by considering the standard and non-standard neutrino interactions. Our results show that the standard sterile neutrino interactions give a negligible contribution to $\Delta a_{\boldsymbol{\mu}}$ while the non-standard neutrino interactions can play a significant role in explaining the muon $(g-2)$ anomaly. In the context of the non-standard neutrino interaction, our calculation shows that a Dirac mass scale $M_D$ around $100\,\text{GeV}$ could explain the muon anomaly if the right handed sterile neutrino's coupling with SM particles is about $\mathcal{G}_R\approx 10^{-3}$. We have also plotted the allowed region of the model parameters that satisfy the experimental data on $\Delta a_{\boldsymbol{\mu}}^{SN}$ and discuss the percentage of the ${\boldsymbol{\mu}}$ anomaly compensation in terms of the coupling constant $\mathcal{G}_R$.

Abstract:The longstanding muon $(g-2)$ anomaly, as well as the persistent hints of lepton flavor universality violation in $B$-meson decays, could be signaling new physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). A minimal $R$-parity-violating supersymmetric framework with light third-generation sfermions (dubbed as 'RPV3') provides a compelling solution to these flavor anomalies, while simultaneously addressing other pressing issues of the SM. We propose a new RPV3 scenario for the solution of the muon $(g-2)$ anomaly, which leads to an interesting LHC signal of $\mu^+\mu^-\tau^+\tau^-$ final state. We analyze the Run-2 LHC multilepton data to derive stringent constraints on the sneutrino mass and the relevant RPV coupling in this scenario. We then propose dedicated selection strategies to improve the bound even with the existing dataset. We also show that the high-luminosity LHC will completely cover the remaining muon $(g-2)$-preferred parameter space, thus providing a robust, independent test of the muon $(g-2)$ anomaly.

New Experiments to Measure the Muon Anomalous Gyromagnetic Moment

Abstract:The magnetic moment is a fundamental property of particles. The measurement of these magnetic moments and the comparison with the values predicted by the standard model of particle physics is a way to test our understanding of the fundamental building blocks of our world. In some cases, such as for the electron, this comparison has resulted in confirmation of the standard model with incredible precision. In contrast, the magnetic moment of the muon has shown a long-standing disagreement in the measured and the predicted value. There is currently a tantalizing three-standard-deviation difference between the current best measurement (with a precision of 0.54 ppm) and the state-of-the-art standard model prediction. This represents one of the very few experimental hints for physics beyond the standard model. There are currently two major experimental efforts underway to improve the precision of the muon magnetic moment measurement. The first is an evolution of the E-821 experiment, originally located at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the United States. This is experiment, E-989, is located at Fermilab and will measure the spin precession rate of positive muons in a 14-m diameter storage ring using decay positrons. The goal of the experiment is to reduce the current experimental uncertainty by a factor of three. The experiment is currently being constructed and aims to start taking data in 2017. An alternative, and very complementary, experiment is being planned at J-PARC in Japan. This experiment, E-34, will utilize low energy, ultra-cold muons in a much smaller storage ring. This experiment aims for a similar precision to the Fermilab experiment and aims to begin data taking on a similar timescale.

Abstract:We examine simple models with an inert scalar and vector-like leptons that can explain the recent $g_{\mu}-2$ measurement reported at FNAL. Prompted by this exciting result, we explore the viability of a simple interpretation and determine the required parameters. We also embed these models within a 3-3-1 gauge extension of the Standard Model (SM), showing that the $g_{\mu}-2$ anomaly can be accommodated in agreement with current data. We also show how our theory can be tested at high-energy colliders such as HL-LHC and FCC-hh.

Abstract:The anomalous magnetic moments of leptons represent excellent probes of the Standard Model and therefore also of possible new physics effects. In particular, the persisting hint of new physics in the muon $g$-2 motivates the investigation of similar effects also in the other leptonic dipoles. In this work, we examine the new physics sensitivity of the tau $g$-2 at future high-energy Muon Collider. We show that these facilities can access a number of processes like the Drell-Yan processes $\mu^+\mu^- \to \tau^+\tau^-(h)$, or vector-boson-fusion processes such as $\mu^+\mu^- \to \mu^+\mu^-\tau^+\tau^-$ and $\mu^+\mu^-\to \nu_\mu \bar{\nu}_\mu \tau^+\tau^-$ those can probe the tau $g$-2 at the level of $\mathcal{O}(10^{-5}-10^{-4})$, a resolution that is orders of magnitude better than the current bounds.

Abstract:The latest FermiLab muon $g-2$ result shows a $5\sigma$ discrepancy with a ``widely advertised" Standard Model prediction. We consider a supersymmetric $SU(4)_c \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ model in which this discrepancy is resolved by including contributions to muon $g-2$ from a relatively light SUSY sector. A variety of realistic coannihilation scenarios can reproduce the observed dark matter relic abundance. With a significantly reduced discrepancy, of order $1 \sigma$ or less, the Higgsino-like dark matter solutions are also viable. We provide benchmark points for these solutions that will be probed in the direct detection dark matter experiments and collider searches.

Abstract:We study the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $g_\mu - 2 \equiv 2 a_\mu$, in the context of supersymmetric models beyond the CMSSM, where the unification of either the gaugino masses $M_{1,2,3}$ or sfermion and Higgs masses is relaxed, taking into account the measured mass of the Higgs boson, $m_H$, the cosmological dark matter density and the direct detection rate. We find that the model with non-unified gaugino masses can make a contribution $\Delta a_\mu\sim 20 \times 10^{-10}$ to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, for example if $M_{1,2} \sim 600$ GeV and $M_3\sim 8$ TeV. The model with non-universal sfermion and Higgs masses can provide even larger $\Delta a_\mu \sim 24 \times 10^{-10}$ if the sfermion masses for the first and the second generations are $ \sim 400 $ GeV and that of the third is $ \sim 8 $ TeV. We discuss the prospects for collider searches for supersymmetric particles in specific benchmark scenarios illustrating these possibilities, focusing in particular on the prospects for detecting the lighter smuon and the lightest neutralino.

Abstract:In addition to vector ($V$) type new particles extensively discussed previously, both CP-even ($S$) and CP-odd ($P$) spin-0 Dark Matter (DM) mediators can couple to muons and be produced in the bremsstrahlung reaction $\mu^- + N \rightarrow \mu^- + N + S(P)$. Their possible subsequent invisible decay into a pair of Dirac DM particles, $S(P) \to \chi \overline{\chi}$, can be detected in fixed target experiments through missing energy signature. In this paper, we focus on the case of experiments using high-energy muon beams. For this reason, we derive the differential cross-sections involved using the phase space Weiszäcker-Williams approximation and compare them to the exact-tree-level calculations. The formalism derived can be applied in various experiments that could observe muon-spin-0 DM interactions. This can happen in present and future proton beam-dump experiments such as NA62, SHIP, HIKE, and SHADOWS; in muon fixed target experiments as NA64$\mu$, MUoNE and M3; in neutrino experiments using powerful proton beams such as DUNE. In particular, we focus on the NA64$\mu$ experiment case, which uses a 160 GeV muon beam at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron accelerator. We compute the derived cross-sections, the resulting signal yields and we discuss the experiment projected sensitivity to probe the relic DM parameter space and the $(g-2)_\mu$ anomaly favoured region considering $10^{12}$ and $10^{13}$ muons on target.

Abstract:If the technology for muon storage rings one day permits sensitivity to precession at the order of $10^{-8}$ Hz, the local gravitational field of Earth can be a dominant contribution to the precession of the muon, which, if ignored, can fake the signal for a nonzero muon electric dipole moment (EDM). Specifically, the effects of Earth's gravity on the motion of a muon's spin is indistinguishable from it having a nonzero EDM of magnitude $d_\mu \sim 10^{-29}$ e cm in a storage ring with vertical magnetic field of $\sim$ 1 T, which is significantly larger than the expected upper limit in the Standard Model, $d_\mu \lesssim 10^{-36}$ e cm. As a corollary, measurements of Earth's local gravitational field using stored muons would be a unique test to distinguish classical gravity from general relativity with a bonafide quantum mechanical entity, i.e., an elementary particle's spin.

Abstract:The E989 Muon $g-2$ Experiment at Fermilab aims to measure the muon magnetic anomaly, $a_\mu$, to an unprecedented precision of 140 parts per billion (ppb), representing a four-fold improvement over the current best measurement, achieved at Brookhaven National Lab. There stands a greater than 3 standard deviations discrepancy between the Brookhaven measurement of $a_\mu$ and the theoretical value predicted using the Standard Model. The Fermilab experiment seeks to either resolve or confirm this discrepancy, which is suggestive of new physics interactions. To achieve the E989 target precision, the anomalous precession frequency of muons in a magnetic storage ring must be determined with a systematic uncertainty below 70\,ppb, and the average magnetic field experienced by these stored muons must be known equally well. The muon anomalous precession frequency is imprinted on the time-dependent energy distribution of decay positrons observed by 24 electromagnetic calorimeters. A suite of pulsed NMR probes continually monitors the magnetic field. This document presents the current status of the Fermilab experiment while emphasizing the ongoing analysis of the 2018 Run 1 dataset and the systematic effects that complicate it.
