Abstract:Here we present a simple route to improve the stiffness of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) gecko-inspired micropillar with high friction by incorporation of ZrO2 particles. Young's modulus of PDMS composite pillar is increased due to the presence of three-dimensional network between fillers and free PDMS segments, and the composite pillar with ZrO2 nanoparticles has the largest Young's modulus due to the high specific surface area of nano-size fillers. The patterned composite pillars with various diameters of ZrO2 particles exhibit high friction force, which is attributed to the strong interconnection between hydroxyl groups on ZrO2 surface and silanol units in PDMS matrix. This particle-embedded elastomer micropillar delivers a universal strategy to increase Young's modulus with high friction performance in gecko-inspired adhesive.
