Abstract:The gecko adhesive system has attracted significant attention since the discovery that van der Waals interactions, which are always present between surfaces, are predominantly responsible for their adhesion. The unique anisotropic frictional-adhesive capabilities of the gecko adhesive system originate from complex hierarchical structures and just as importantly, the anisotropic articulation of the structures. Here, by cleverly engineering asymmetric polymeric microstructures, a reusable switchable gecko-like adhesive can be fabricated yielding steady high adhesion (F-perpendicular to approximate to 1.25 N/cm(2)) and friction ((F-perpendicular to approximate to 2.8 N/cm(2)) forces when actuated for "gripping", yet release easily with minimal adhesion ((F-perpendicular to approximate to 0.34 N/cm(2)) and friction ((F-perpendicular to approximate to 0.38 N/cm(2)) forces during detachment or "releasing", over multiple attachment/detachment cycles, with a relatively small normal preload of 0.16 N/cm(2) to initiate the adhesion. These adhesives can also be used to reversibly suspend weights from vertical (e. g., walls), and horizontal (e.g., ceilings) surfaces by simultaneously and judiciously activating anisotropic friction and adhesion forces. This design opens the way for new gecko-like adhesive surfaces and articulation mechanisms that do not rely on intensive nanofabrication in order to recover the anisotropic tribological property of gecko adhesive pads, albeit with lower adhesive forces compared to geckos.
Gecko’s Feet-Inspired Self-Peeling Switchable Dry/Wet Adhesive

Abstract:Dynamic switchable attachment/detachment behavior can be extensively observed in biological systems. Although wide interest has been focused on the fabrication of biomimetic synthetic switchable adhesives, designing intelligent adhesive material systems under both dry and wet conditions by following a peeling mechanism from mechanical deformation-induced adaptive evolution of the interface geometric contact state is still challenging. Herein, inspired by the rolling behavior of gecko's feet, one kind of novel multilayered self-peeling switchable dry/wet adhesive (SPSA) is developed by integrating thermal-responsive hydrogel layers, gecko's feet-inspired mushroom-structured arrays, and mussel-inspired copolymer adhesive coatings together. The SPSA shows thermal-responsive curving behavior along with switchable dry and underwater adhesion. Theoretical analysis is performed for explaining the dynamic curvature-induced switchable peeling mechanism. By integrating Fe3O4 nanoparticles into the SPSA, remote control over switchable adhesion can be achieved by applying near-infrared laser radiation. Considering potential applications, the SPSA can be used for successfully bonding/separating and capturing/releasing objects in air and in underwater environments. Abstract:Gecko-inspired surfaces are smart dry adhesive surfaces that have attracted much attention because of their wide range of potential applications. However, strong frictional force, rather than adhesive force, is frequently targeted in most of research in this area. In this study, the interfacial adhesive and frictional properties of a gecko-inspired mushroom-shaped polyurethane pillar array surface have been systematically characterized to design and control the interfacial adhesion of the surface by considering the nanoscale interfacial adhesion, the microscale structural compliance and deformation, and the macro-scale actuation. Matching the movement of the leg springs and the interfacial adhesive characteristics between the pillar array surfaces and substrates, a three-legged clamp prototype has been designed and fabricated to successfully pick up and release light and fragile objects with a smooth upper surface, such as a silicon wafer. These results provide a new insight into not only the theoretical understanding of the integrating adhesion mechanisms, but also the practical applications of utilizing and controlling the adhesive and frictional forces of gecko-inspired surfaces.

Abstract:Transfer printing based on switchable adhesive that heterogeneously integrates materials is essential to develop novel electronic systems, such as flexible electronics and micro LED displays. Here, we report a robust design of a thermal actuated switchable dry adhesive, which features a stiff sphere embedded in a thermally responsive shape memory polymer (SMP) substrate and encapsulated by an elastomeric membrane. This construct bypasses the unfavorable micro- and nano-fabrication processes and yields an adhesion switchability of over 1000 by combining the peel-rate dependent effect of the elastomeric membrane and the thermal actuation of the sub-surface embedded stiff sphere. Experimental and numerical studies reveal the underlying thermal actuated mechanism and provide insights into the design and operation of the switchable adhesive. Demonstrations of this concept in stamps for transfer printing of fragile objects, such as silicon wafers, silicon chips, and inorganic micro-LED chips, onto challenging non-adhesive surfaces illustrate its potential in heterogeneous material integration applications, such as flexible electronics manufacturing and deterministic assembly.

Abstract:The current research on gecko-inspired dry adhesives is focused on micropillar arrays with different terminal shapes, such as flat, spherical, mushroom, and spatula tips. The corresponding processing methods are mostly chemical methods, including lithography, etching, and deposition, which not only are complex, expensive, and environmentally unfriendly, but also cannot completely ensure microstructural integrity or performance stability. The present study demonstrates a high-precision, high-efficiency, and green method for the fabrication of a gecko-inspired surface, which can promote its application in dexterous robot hands and mechanical grippers. Based on the bendable lamellar structures of the gecko, annular wedge adhesive surfaces that stick to the finger surfaces of dexterous robot hands to improve their load capacity are proposed and fabricated via a suitable combined processing method of ultraprecision machining and replica molding. The greater the width, the higher the replication integrity, and when the minimum width is 20 μm, the replication error is less than 5.5% due to the superior processing performance of the nickel–phosphorus (Ni–P) plating of the master mold. The fabricated annular wedge structures with an optimized width of 20 μm not only exhibit a strong friction force of up to 35.48 mN under a preload of 20 mN in the GCr15/poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) friction pair but also demonstrate an obviously improved anisotropic friction characteristic of up to λ = 1.36, as the molecular force exhibits a stronger increase as compared to the decrease of the mechanical force of the structure with a small width.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Smart adhesives with switchable adhesion have attracted considerable attention for their potential applications in sensors, soft grippers, and robots. In particular, surfaces with controlled adhesion to both solids and liquids have received more attention, because of their wider range of applications. However, surfaces that exhibit controllable adhesion to both solids and liquids often cannot provide sufficient adhesion strength for strong solid adhesion. To overcome this limitation, this study developed a triple-bioinspired shape memory smart adhesive, drawing inspiration from the adhesion structures found in octopus suckers, lotus leaves, and creepers. Our adhesive design incorporates microcavities formed by a shape memory polymer (SMP), which can transition between rubbery and glassy states in response to temperature changes. By leveraging the shape memory effect and the rubber-glass (R-G) phase transition of the SMP, the adhesion of the surface to smooth solids, rough solids, and water droplets could be switched by adjusting the temperature and applied force. Notably, the adhesives designed herein exhibited high adhesion strength (up to 420 kPa) on solids, facilitated by the shape interlocking effect and the negative pressure generated within the microcavities. Furthermore, the programmable transport of solids and liquids can be achieved by utilizing this switchable adhesion. This approach expands the possibilities for designing smart adhesives and holds potential for various applications in different fields.

Abstract:Biologically inspired dry adhesion has recently become a research hot topic because of its practical significance in scientific research and instrumental technology. Yet, most of the current studies merely focus on borrowing the concept from some finer biological contact elements but lose sight of the foundation ones that play an equally important role in the adhesion functionality. Inspired by the bending behavior of the flexible foundation element of a gecko (lamellar skin) in attachment motion, in this study, a new type of dry adhesive structure was proposed, wherein a mushroom-shaped micropillar array behaving as a strongly adhesive layer was engineered on a discretely supported thin film. We experimentally observed and analytically modeled the structural deformation and found that the energy penalty could be largely reduced because of the partial shift from pillar bending to film bending. Such behavior is very analogous in functionality to the lamellar skin in a gecko's pads and is helpful in effectively limiting the damage of the contact interface, thus generating enhanced adhesion even on a rough surface.

Abstract:Tunable and reversible dry adhesion has attracted much attention in academia and industry due to its wide applications ranging from releasable joints to stamps for transfer printing. Here, a simple yet robust magnetically actuated, aphid-inspired design of an elastomeric surface that provides rapidly tunable and highly reversible adhesion strength is reported. The magnetically actuated adhesive features open reservoirs filled with magnetic particles and encapsulated by a thin surface membrane, which can be deformed in a controlled manner via the magnetic field, thus, to tune the adhesion. The combination of the rate dependent effect and magnetic actuation of the thin surface membrane offers continuously tunable adhesion with a great switchability and a quick response. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal the underlying physics and provide design guidelines to optimize geometries for the broad control of adhesion. Demonstrations of this concept in stamps for transfer printing of silicon wafers in air and in a vacuum with a selective and programmable mode illustrate the capabilities for deterministic assembly and the potential in the semiconductor industry.

Abstract:Inspired by the synergistic influence of microscale contact end (seta), mesoscopic supporting layer (lamella), and macro backing (muscle tissues) of gecko's sole, a multi‐scale bionic dry adhesive is proposed. It is experimentally demonstrated to have adaptable adhesion to various objects with curved or irregular surfaces, even for that with abrupt contours, as well as an amazing stable anti‐vibration ability. For dry adhesive–based operation, highly adaptable and stable manipulation is important but also challenging, especially for irregular objects with complex surface (such as abrupt profile and acute projection) under vibration‐inducing environments. Here, a multi‐scale adhesive structure, with mechanically isolated energy‐absorbing backing, based on the synergistic action of microscale contact end (seta), mesoscale supporting layer (lamella), and macroscopic backing (muscle tissues) of gecko's sole, is proposed. Top layer of mushroom‐like micro tips provides dry adhesion via mimicking gecko's seta, and bottom layer of physical cuts and porous feature achieves the interfacial mechanical decoupling and crack inhibition via mimicking the non‐continuous distributing of lamella and compliance of muscle. The proposed dry adhesive exhibits excellent adaptable adhesion to various objects with curved or irregular surfaces, even for that with abrupt contours, as well as an amazing stable anti‐vibration ability, opening a new avenue for the development of dry adhesive–based device or system.

Abstract:Creating a reusable adhesive that can hold objects on a wall and can yet be easily removed without causing damage has been a goal for researchers in the adhesives community for many years. Geckos and other climbing organisms demonstrate just this ability: to hold large loads (on-state) due to specialized digits and microstructures, yet they are also able to quickly peel their feet from a surface while climbing (off-state). Inspired by the simplicity of the gecko's geometric switching mechanism, we have investigated the use of origami design methods to create geometries that can transition from a stiff configuration to a more flexible and easily peeled configuration. Specifically, we examined three different origami designs (Kresling 1–3, Waterbomb4 and Ron Resch5) fabricated in polycarbonate and supplemented with 3D printed structures. Although the polycarbonate could be coated with a commercial adhesive, we investigated the devices in contact with polydimethylsiloxane adhesive pads in order to chemically control interfaces and create a range of differing adhesion levels. We show that the devices are capable of moderate switching ratios (Fon/Fo f f up to ∼ 50). We give a simple model to aid design and provide many options for scaling design performance through size, adhesive strength or through repetition of the pattern beyond a single unit cell.

In Situ Growth of Mushroom‐Shaped Adhesive Structures on Flat/Curved Surfaces via Electrical Modulation

Abstract:Geometrical distortions during the transfer process limit the adhesion strength of gecko‐inspired adhesives on curved surfaces, especially undevelopable surfaces. A method capable of growing mushroom‐shaped adhesion structures in situ on surfaces with different curvatures is realized by applying a modulated electric field. Mushroom‐shaped adhesive materials fabricated by this method exhibit superior adhesion strength on curved surfaces than all similar structures reported in recent years. Gecko‐inspired adhesives have an extraordinary impact on robotic manipulation and locomotion. However, achieving excellent adhesive performance on curved surfaces, especially undevelopable surfaces, is still challenging. This can be attributed to a considerable difference between the fabrication method and practical necessity, i.e., the adhesive structures are generally fabricated on a flat substrate whereas the manipulating surface is curved, resulting in a low adhesive strength. Here, an in‐situ growth strategy is proposed to fabricate mushroom‐shaped structures at micro/nano‐scale via electrical modulation on flat or curved surfaces. Since the adhesive structures are directly grown on target surfaces without a transfer procedure, they exhibit a large contact area and stress uniformity at the interface, corresponding to an excellent adhesive force. A comparison between grown structures using the proposed method and those fabricated using traditional approaches suggests that the adhesive forces are identical for flat testing surfaces, while the difference can be up to 4 times for developable surfaces and even 25 times for undevelopable surfaces. The proposed adhesion strategy extends the application prospects of gecko‐inspired adhesives from flat surfaces to curved ones, composed of developable and undevelopable surfaces, opening a new avenue to develop gecko‐inspired adhesive‐based devices and systems.

Abstract:Collagen triple helix repeats containing 1 (CTHRC1) participates in vascular remodeling, bone formation, and developmental morphogenesis. Recently, CTHRC1 has been found up-regulated in many solid tumors and contributes to tumorigenesis, but its role in the progression of human colorectal cancer (CRC), remains unclear. In this study, CTHRC1 expression in human CRC cell lines was evaluated by quantitative real-time PCR and immunoblot analyses. The role of CTHRC1 in CRC cell proliferation and extracellular matrix invasion in vitro was analyzed by gene over-expression and recombinant protein. Reporter luciferase assay was used to reveal key relevant signaling pathways involved in CRC cells. The results show that CTHRC1 is secreted both by colorectal epithelia cells and stromal fibroblasts. Recombinant CTHRC1 promotes CRC cell migration and invasion dose-dependently. CTHRC1 overexpression promotes CRC cell migration, invasion and proliferation in vitro. Wnt/PCP signaling but not Wnt/catenin signaling was activates by CTHRC1 in CRC cells. Together, CTHRC1 promotes CRC cell proliferation, migration and invasion in vitro, which is possibly mediated by activating Wnt/PCP pathway.

Abstract:Bioinspired elastomeric structural adhesives can provide reversible and controllable adhesion on dry/wet and synthetic/biological surfaces for a broad range of commercial applications. Shape complexity and performance of the existing structural adhesives are limited by the used specific fabrication technique, such as molding. To overcome these limitations by proposing complex 3D microstructured adhesive designs, a 3D elastomeric microstructure fabrication approach is implemented using two-photon-polymerization-based 3D printing. A custom aliphatic urethane-acrylate-based elastomer is used as the 3D printing material. Two designs are demonstrated with two combined biological inspirations to show the advanced capabilities enabled by the proposed fabrication approach and custom elastomer. The first design focuses on springtail- and gecko-inspired hybrid microfiber adhesive, which has the multifunctionalities of side-surface liquid super-repellency, top-surface liquid super-repellency, and strong reversible adhesion features in a single fiber array. The second design primarily centers on octopus- and gecko-inspired hybrid adhesive, which exhibits the benefits of both octopus- and gecko-inspired microstructured adhesives for strong reversible adhesion on both wet and dry surfaces, such as skin. This fabrication approach could be used to produce many other 3D complex elastomeric structural adhesives for future real-world applications.

Strong and Highly Switchable Soft Sticky Adhesives

Abstract:Many biological systems can form strong adhesion to various materials with complex shapes. The adhesion is further switchable between strongly adhering and completely non-adhering in a simple and fast manner. By contrast, no engineering system has yet achieved the same robust adherence and switching. This limitation severely hinders the advancement of several emerging technologies including biomimetic robots, assembly-based manufacturing, precision medicine, wearable and implantable devices, as well as on-demand material dismantling and recycling for sustainability. Here we present a design approach for strong and highly switchable adhesion by synergizing the surface stickiness, bulk energy dissipation, and stimuli-responsive polymer chains in a thermo-switchable soft sticky adhesive. The adhesive has a high adhesion strength of about 80 kPa with diverse materials at room temperature. The adhesion is highly switchable to near-vanishing (about 0.6 kPa) at an elevated temperature due to the thermo-responsive surface polymer chain retraction. This adhesion switching is reversible and repeatable for many cycles, enabling selective pick-and-release of objects with various materials, shapes, sizes, and weights. The switching time is around 10 s with an adhesive layer of 1 mm, governed by thermal conduction through the adhesive, faster than or comparable to most state-of-the-art methods. The adhesive is self-healing, and can be recycled, dried, stored, reswollen, and reused with nearly intact adhesion and switching properties. The synergistic design combining strong adhesion and stimuli-responsive switching can be potentially extended to various polymer systems, and further enhanced by optimized surface architectures.

Abstract:It has long been demonstrated the gecko‐inspired micropillar array with T‐shape tips possesses the best adhesion performance of a given material. The further enhancement of the adhesion performances of T‐shape micropillars can offer redundant adhesion to compensate for the inevitable improper contacts. Here, the array of T‐shape polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) micropillars is incorporated with gradient dispersed calcium carbonate nanoparticles in the micropillar stalk, termed as T‐shape gradient micropillars (TG), possessing the modulus gradient with stiff tip and soft root. The gradient modulus in TG facilitates the contact formation and regulates the stress at the detaching interface, resulting in a 4.6 times adhesion and 2.4 times friction as compared with the pure PDMS T‐shape micropillar arrays. The study here provides a new design strategy for the super‐strong structured dry adhesives.

Abstract:In this manuscript, projection microstereolithography 3D printing method is firstly adopted to prepare the bioinspired adhesive in several micrometers, which is low cost, time saving, convenient, and can realize rapid, large‐scale, high‐precision, and controllable complex structure manufacture. The mushroom‐shaped adhesive exhibits excellent adhesion property, high repeatability, and good self‐cleaning ability, which is further applied in grasping and transferring various surfaces. Many methods are used to manufacture bioinspired adhesive arrays such as photolithography and nanoimprinting methods, which are very high cost and time‐consuming. In this manuscript, projection microstereolithography 3D printing method is firstly adopted to prepare the bioinspired dry adhesive in several micrometers, which is low cost, time saving, convenient and can realize rapid, large‐scale, high‐precision, and controllable complex structure manufacture. The morphology and adhesive properties of four kinds of adhesive with flat punch, mushroom‐shaped, suction cup‐shaped, and titled micropillar structures are investigated. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation shows that the very regular pattern of the adhesive is generated and no collapse phenomenon is observed. The adhesion test results show the mushroom‐shaped adhesive reach the maximum adhesion of 15 KPa, which can be maintained after repeated uses. The contact angle of the adhesive is 143.7°, showing the good self‐cleaning ability. The mushroom‐shaped adhesive exhibits excellent adhesion property, high repeatability, and good self‐cleaning ability, which is further applied in grasping and transferring various surfaces such as solar panels, printed circuit board, flanges, and so on.

Abstract:Abstract Solid matter that can rapidly and reversibly switch between adhesive and non-adhesive states is desired in many technological domains including climbing robotics, actuators, wound dressings, and bioelectronics due to the ability for on-demand attachment and detachment. For most types of smart adhesive materials, however, reversible switching occurs only at narrow scales (nanoscale or microscale), which limits the realization of interchangeable surfaces with distinct adhesive states. Here, we report the design of a switchable adhesive hydrogel via dynamic multiscale contact synergy, termed as DMCS-hydrogel. The hydrogel rapidly switches between slippery (friction ~0.04 N/cm 2 ) and sticky (adhesion ~3 N/cm 2 ) states in the solid-solid contact process, exhibits large span, is switchable and dynamic, and features rapid adhesive switching. The design strategy of this material has wide applications ranging from programmable adhesive materials to intelligent devices.
