Abstract:A 2D zinc(ii)-based metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF) formulated as [Zn(bimpy)(1,4-ndc)]center dot H2O (1, bimpy = 3,5-bis(1-imidazolyl)pyridine and 1,4-ndc = 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid) was synthesized by solvothermal reaction. Complex 1 exhibits high water and pH-independent stability. It can detect Fe3+ and ascorbic acid (AA) as a "turn-off" fluorescence probe and a "turn-on" fluorescence probe in aqueous solution with high sensitivity and selectivity, respectively. The detection limits of 1 for Fe3+ and AA are about 8.82 x 10(-7) M and 6.12 x 10(-7) M, respectively. The fluorescence intensity of the Fe3+@1 system can be obviously recovered after adding AA due to the reduction of Fe3+, which exhibits a fluorescence "turn-on" signal (turn-off-on) for Fe3+@1 toward AA with a low detection limit (3.53 x 10(-7) M). Complex 1 still exhibits good detection of Fe3+ and AA after washing and using for five cycles. Additionally, two different multi-input molecular logic gates are established. One is used to distinguish the effect of Fe3+ and Fe2+ on the fluorescence of complex 1, and the other is to further explain the regulation of Fe3+ and AA on the fluorescence of complex 1. This work shows that complex 1 is the first MOF-based "turn-on" fluorescent probe for both Fe3+ and AA in aqueous solution.

Abstract:A novel metal-organic framework with the formula [Zn3(DDB)(DPE)]·H2O (1) (H5DDB = 3,5-di(2',4'-dicarboxylphenyl)benzoic acid and DPE = 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene) has been solvothermally synthesized by employing a rigid carboxylate ligand H5DDB to assemble with Zn(ii) ions in the presence of a flexible bis(pyridyl) linker DPE. The Zn-MOF is a 3D framework with six-nuclear clusters and possesses remarkable water stability and pH stability. Interestingly, complex 1 can sensitively and selectively sense Fe(iii), Cr(iii), Cr(vi), Mn(vii) and the pesticide 2,6-Dich-4-NA with low detection limits in aqueous solution. Moreover, complex 1 also exhibits selectivity for 2,6-Dich-4-NA detection in real samples including carrot, grape and nectarine extracts, and its detection ability is almost unchanged in the presence of the surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The possible mechanisms of luminescence quenching have been explained by the weak affinity of nitrogen atoms, resonance energy transfer, and photoinduced electron transfer. To our knowledge, this is the first example of a MOF-based multiresponsive fluorescent probe for the simultaneous detection of Fe(iii), Cr(iii/vi), Mn(vii) and the pesticide 2,6-Dich-4-NA in aqueous solution.

Abstract:The development of luminescent metal-organic frameworks for effective sensing and monitoring of environmental pollutants is of great significance for human health and environmental protection. In this work, a novel water-stable ZnII-based luminescent coordination polymer, namely {[Zn(BBDF)(ATP)]·2DMF·3H2O}n ((BBDF = 2,7-bis(1H-benzimidazol-1-yl)-9,9-dimethyl-9H-fluorene) and H2ATP = 2-aminoterephthalic acid), was designed and obtained using the mixed-ligand method. Structural analysis indicated that 1 presents a two-fold interpenetrated two-dimensional layer structure with one dimensional (1D) channels along the a axis. Intriguingly, the uncoordinated -NH2 group was danged onto the pore walls of 1. Remarkably, compound 1 shows good aqueous stability at different pH values of 3-13 and exhibits a fluorescence turn-off sensing behavior for Hg2+, Cr2O72-, CrO42-, and antibiotics (NFZ, NFT) in aqueous solution with high selectivity and sensitivity. The limits of detection (LOD) are 0.12 μM (Hg2+), 0.17 μM (Cr2O72-), 0.21 μM (CrO42-), 0.098 μM (NFZ), and 0.14 μM (NFT). The luminescence quenching mechanism analysis by experiment and theoretical calculation revealed that the competitive absorption and the photoinduced electron transfer process are largely responsible for the sensing of the two antibiotics, while the weak interaction contributes to the selective luminescence quenching for Hg2+.

Abstract:Glutathione (GSH), as a key regulator for the redox balance of biological processes, was detected with a metal-organic framework (MOF) (UiO-67-sbdc) fluorescence sensor. The fluorescence of UiO-67-sbdc could be effectively enhanced by GSH via an electronic effect between GSH and the ligand of MOF, thus achieving the recognition of GSH. It is the first attempt to design a MOF-based fluorescent sensor to distinguish GSH from cysteine (Cys). This sensor exhibited short response time (< 120 s), suitable linear range, and high selectivity towards GSH. Further research conducted in serum also showed a quantitative and selective detection of GSH. Thus, the reported UiO-67-sbdc in this work has its application prospect in clinically judging antioxidant capacity of the body.

Abstract:The pillared-layer Metal–Organic Framework (MOF) enjoys good tunability and rich functionality, yet highly relies on rational combination of mixed ligands. A new MOF formulated as [Zn2(trz)2(btdb)]·4DMF (1, trz = 1,2,4-triazole, H2btdb = 4,4'-(benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-diyl) dibenzoic acid) is constructed from a [Zn2] node based (4,4)-grid layer that pillared by inclined a highly fluorescent dicarboxylate linkers. The rigid [Zn2(trz)2] layer coupled with hydrogen bonding encompassed Zn-carboxyl linkage endow the MOF desired high stability. The crystalline structure of 1 maintains well in harsh conditions including pH = 3 HCl and pH = 12 NaOH aqueous solution for more than 24 h. With high void fraction of 42.7%, the interconnected 3D channels sized at 4.0∼8.8 Å guarantee sufficient exposure of thiadiazole in the pillar ligand as potential sensing site. With bright fluorescence of 1, Fe3+ ions can be selectively and specifically detected in both aqueous and non-aqueous solution through quenching mechanism, given a detection limit of 3.1 and 17.0 μM in methanol and H2O solution, respectively.

Abstract:Two new water-stable zinc metal-organic frameworks (Zn-MOFs) formulated as [Zn(L1)(1,4-NDC)](n) (1) and [Zn(L2)(0.5)(1,4-NDC)](n) (2) (L1 = 1,4-bis(5,6-dimethylbenzimidazol-1-yl)-2-butylene, L2 = 1,4-bis(benzimidazol-1-yl)-2-butylene, 1,4-H2NDC = 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid) were synthesized and characterized. 1 possesses an unusual 3D (3,4)-connected dmc topology and 2 exhibits a rarely 2-fold interpenetrating 3D (4,5)-connected xah framework. 1 and 2 can be used as dual luminescence probes for detection of glyoxal and Cr2O72- anions in water, showing high sensitivity, selectivity and recyclability. The mechanism of the sensing glyoxal and Cr2O72- is also presented. The fluorosensors based on MOF materials for effectively sensing glyoxal have been first demonstrated.

Abstract:A six-coordinated 3D metal–organic framework (MOF), namely, [Co(BPDC)(3-bpdb)(H2O)2]n (1) (H2BPDC = 4,4′-biphenyldicarboxylic acid, 3-bpdb = 1,4-bis(3-pyridyl)-2,3-diaza-1,3-butadiene) was purposefully constructed and characterized by single-crystal XRD, IR, elemental analyses, PXRD, SEM, and TGA. Crystal structural analysis revealed that the complex consists of a cds-type three-fold interpenetrated framework. Hirshfeld surface analysis yielded details of the surface characteristics of 1. Significant O−H···O hydrogen bonding interactions, which could promote the stability of the framework, were found is extremely stable in aqueous solution and can resist acids and bases over an extensive pH range of 2–13. 1 shows brilliant fluorescent emission in the solid state and in aqueous solution. Fluorescence titration, cyclic, and anti-interference experiments demonstrated that 1 is an excellent probe for Fe3+, CrO42‒ and Cr2O72‒ in water. The Ksv values of 1 for Fe3+, CrO42‒, and Cr2O72‒, which were as high as 1.06 × 104 M−1, 1.50 × 104 M−1, and 1.16 × 104 M−1, respectively, were comparable with those of other sensors. The quenching mechanism of the novel probe was subsequently explained.

Abstract:Through a solvothermal approach, a new zinc metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF), [Zn(PBA)(pic)(H2O)]·H2O·0.5DMA has been successfully engineered, based on 2-picolinic acid (Hpic) and 4-(pyridin-4-yl) benzoic acid (HPBA) ligands. We investigated the crystalline structure, chemical and thermal stability, and fluorescence properties by some modern techniques in detail. Zn-MOF possesses splendid water stability. Especially, the Zn-MOF displays remarkable fluorescent quenching effect toward nitrobenzene (NB) and Fe3+ ion. The high sensitivities K SV values for NB and Fe3+ are 3.80 × 103 M−1, and 2.42 × 104 M−1, and the low limit of detection values of NB and Fe3+ are 1.84 × 10−5 M and 0.315 μM. Moreover, the electron and energy transfer mechanism are reasonably explained for the sensing mechanisms. As a result, Zn-MOF can be used as a dual-responsive luminescence quenching detector to detect NB and Fe3+ with outstanding sensitivity, selectivity and recyclability.

Abstract:Fluorescent sensors have been extensively employed in efficient energy utilization and environment protection. In this work, an amino-decorated metal–organic framework [Cd(3-NH2-pba)2]4·8DMF (3-NH2-Hpba = 3-amino-4-(pyridin-4-yl)benzoic acid) was synthesized as a dual-function fluorescent sensor through the distinctive interaction of amino moieties with analytes. This compound exhibits highly sensitive turn-off sensing of trace water in ethanol with a detection limit to 0.09%, much below the required values for hydrated ethyl alcohol fuel internationally. Meanwhile, it can also be developed as an unusual turn-on sensor for the probe of Ag+ in aqueous solution with the detection limit to 0.44 μM, lower than the maximum concentration of Ag+ in drinking water according to the standard of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Abstract:A novel two-dimensional (2D) cadmium-based metal-organic framework [Cd-2(HDDB)(bimpy)(NMP)(H2O)]center dot 3H(2)O (1) (H5DDB = 3,5-di(2',4'-dicarboxylphenyl)benozoic acid and bimpy = 3,5-bis(1-imidazolyl)pyridine) has been constructed by solvothermal method, which exhibits good water stability, pH stability and excellent photoluminescence properties. Complex 1 reveals a fluorescence turn-off behaviour towards nitrofuran/nitroimidazole antibiotics and DCN pesticide due to PET (photoinduced electron transfer) and FRET (fluorescence resonance energy transfer). Interestingly, complex 1 can be designed as an "on-off-on" fluorescence probe to detect Fe3+ ion and ascorbic acid (AA). The fluorescence of complex 1 can be quenched by Fe3+ ion to form a Fe3+@1 hybrid system, which can be ascribed to the FRET process and the week interaction between Fe3+ and 1. Then, after gradually adding AA into Fe3+ @1 system, the fluorescence intensity of Fe3+@1 fluorescence-silent system was recovered (turn on). The possible fluorescence turn-on mechanism is the elimination of FRET process between Fe3+ and complex 1. Abstract:It is critical to detect Fe3+ and Al3+ rapidly and accurately due to their high risk to human and ecological environment. In this work, a kind of Terbium-based metal-organic framework fluorescent probe (Tb-MOF) is facilely fabricated which displays ultra-high selective detection of Fe3+ and Al3+ against various coexistence ions (i. e. Mn2+, Co2+, K+, Ca2+, Na+, Mg2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Fe2+, Zn2+, Ni2+, Pb2+ and Cr3+). The obtained Tb-MOF exhibits the emission at 547 nm and possesses the outstanding thermal, fluorescent and chemical stability. Tb-MOF shows a ratiometric fluorescence signal for Al3+, and the detection limits for Fe3+ and Al3+ ions are 0.91 and 6.10 μM, respectively. Moreover, the fluorescence intensities and concentrations of Fe3+ and Al3+ have good linear relationships in wide concentration ranges. Furthermore, the quantifications of Fe3+ and Al3+ are acquired in complex tap and river waters with good recoveries. This study offers a facile and efficient method of developing the fluorescent probe which possesses the ability to quantify Fe3+ and Al3+ in real environment waters.

Highly selective and turn-on fluorescence probe with red shift emission for naked-eye detecting Al3+ and Ga3+ based on metal-organic framework

Abstract:A novel ZnII-based metal-organic framework with the formula of {[Zn2(BBIP)2(NDC)2]•H2O}n (JXUST-5) derived from 3,5-bis(benzimidazol-1-yl)pyridine (BBIP) and 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (H2NDC) has been synthesized. The adjacent ZnII ions are linked through two BBIP ligands to form a [Zn2(BBIP)2] secondary building unit (SBU). The neighbouring SBUs are further connected by NDC2− with μ2-η1:η1 and μ2-η1:η1:η1 bridging modes to form a two-dimensional (2D) framework. Topological analysis shows that JXUST-5 could be simplified as an uninodal fes topology with a point symbol of {4.82}. Furthermore, the 2D framework net could be extended through C-H•••π interaction to form the three-dimensional supramolecular structure. Luminescent experiments suggest that JXUST-5 could selectively and sensitively recognize Al3+ and Ga3+ through fluorescence enhancement effect along with a relatively large red shift. The detection limits for Al3+ and Ga3+ are 0.17 and 0.69 ppm, respectively. Interestingly, the sensing process for both Al3+ and Ga3+ could be directly observed with naked eyes under 365 nm UV lamp. Notably, JXUST-5 could be recycled at least five times as a fluorescent sensor toward Al3+ and Ga3+, which is the second example of turn-on MOF based fluorescent sensor toward Ga3+.

Water Stable [Tb4] Cluster-Based Metal-Organic Framework as Sensitive and Recyclable Luminescence Sensor of Quercetin

Abstract:A novel 3D metal-organic framework (MOF){[Tb3(CBA)2(HCOO)(μ3-OH)4(H2O)]·2H2O·0.5DMF} n (S-1) was synthesized by the solvothermal method. The crystal structure indicates that [Tb4O4] cubane clusters self-assemble into an infinite chain by sharing vertex, which is further linked to adjacent chains through 1,1-cyclobutanedicarboxylic acid ligand (H2CBA), resulting in a honeycomb arrayed framework. S-1 possesses excellent water stability and still retains intact structure after exposure to water for 10 weeks or boiling water for 10 weeks. Interestingly, S-1 acts as a luminescence sensor to selectively and sensitively detect quercetin with the limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.23 ppm (7.6 × 10-7 M). The relationship between relative luminescence intensity and concentration obeys linear in the range of 0-300 ppm (0-993 μM), which allows quantitative detection of quercetin. Importantly, S-1 can be reused at least six times with almost no change in luminescent intensity. Compared with the high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) method, S-1 was used to determine the content of quercetin in onionskin and apple peel samples with satisfactory results. Furthermore, a portable S-1 test paper is also developed and expected to be applied in practice. To our knowledge, S-1 is the first example of MOFs as luminescent sensor for quercetin.

Abstract:A new stable Cd(II)-MOF [Cd(PBA)(pic)(H2O)]·H2O·0.5DMA (1) (HPBA = 4-(pyridin-4-yl) benzoic acid, Hpic = 2-picolinic acid, DMA = N, N'-dimethylacetamide) has been successfully constructed by solvothermal condition and characterized in detail. MOF 1 exhibits excellent chemical stability in water, which provides possible for sensing in water. The luminescent spectra demonstrate different to different metal cations. Notably, Fe3+ causes the highest fluorescence quenching, and the quenching efficiency is up to 96% at a concentration of 10-3 M Fe3+ in aqueous solution. Additionally, there was no obvious change in fluorescent quenching efficiency after 5 sensing cycles. Therefore, MOF 1 is expected to be used as a fluorescent probe for sensing Fe3+ in water with high selectivity, sensitivity, and recyclability.

Abstract:In this research, a novel hydroxyl functionalized covalent organic framework (COF) with fluorescence properties was rationally designed based on the reaction between 2,5-dihydroxy-terephthalic-dihydrazide (DHTPz) and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxaldehyde (Bt) for Zn2+ detection. The prepared DHTPz-Bt exhibited strong fluorescence, while the apparent quenching of fluorescence was observed after the introduction of Zn2+. Meanwhile, DHTPz-Bt exhibited high sensitivity and promising selectivity during the detection of Zn2+. Additionally, the recognition process was revealed to be attributed to the coordination between the hydroxyl groups on the phenyls of DHTPz-Bt and Zn2+ ions, as verified by using Fourier-transform infrared spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectra. This work demonstrates the great potential of fluorescent probes by rationally introducing metal ligands, which will lead to a suite of new COF materials for metal ion sensing in a practical manner.

Abstract:To achieve the ultrastable LMOFs with predominant luminescent sensing performances, the aromatic π-electron mixed ligands strategy was introduced, and the ternary LMOF of {[Zn2(HDDB)(bib)1.5]·3H2O}n (1), was fabricated based on 3,5-di(2',4'-dicarboxylphenyl)benozoic acid (H5DDB) and the N-donor of meta-bis(imidazol-1-yl)benzene (bib) under mixed solvothermal condition. LMOF 1 features the first reported 3D 3,4,4-c {62.83.10}{62.8}2{63.82.10}2 framework with 21.2 % porosity as well as high thermal and chemical stability. Further luminescent sensing showed that LMOF 1 as a bifunctional chemosensor possessing predominant detectability for sensitive detect the hexavalent chromates and nitroimidazoles/nitrofurans antibiotics in water through strong luminescent quenching effects, with excellent reusability as well as trace detection limits. Moreover, luminescent quenching mechanisms were further investigated from electron transfer and energy transfer viewpoints.

Abstract:A novel thermal-stable and water-stable Zn(II)-based metal-organic framework (MOF), [Zn-2(bcpp)(2)(1,4-bib)(2)]center dot 1.5H(2)O (1) was synthesized by solvothermal method based on 3,5-bis(4-carboxylphenoxy)pyridine (H(2)bcpp) and 1,4-bis(1-imidazoly)benzene (1,4-bib). Complex 1 belongs to the monoclinic system with space group I2/a, which exhibits a 1D tubular structure. The adjacent 1D tubular structures are interpenetrated with each other to obtain a 3D supramolecular structure. Moreover, complex 1 exhibits excellent photoluminescence property, which can be applied as a "turn-off" fluorescence probe to detect Fe3+ ion and pesticide 2,6-dichloro-4-nitroaniline in an aqueous solution with high selectivity and sensitivity.

Abstract:One water stable three-dimensional coordination polymer {[Zn(TTPA)]·1.5DMA}n (Zn-1) was successfully synthesized via solvo-thermal reaction of a bifunctional ligand 2,5-bis-(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)-terephthalic acid (H2TTPA) and Zn(NO3)2. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses proclaimed that Zn-1 is a 3D framework with one-dimensional channels long c direction. Further topological studies revealed that polymer Zn-1 characterized as a (4,4)-connected binodal net with Schläfli symbol as {42.84}. In addition, the luminescent researches indicate that complex Zn-1 exhibits not only excellent recognition abilities of Fe3+, Cr2O7 2− and antibiotics (NFT, NFZ and DTZ) via luminescence quenching mechanism, but also efficient “turn-on” fluorescence sensing property of pyridine. Zn-1 is the first MOF material with multi-sensing performances of Fe3+, Cr2O7 2−, antibiotics and pyridine in aqueous media.
