Abstract:The accumulation of damage significantly affects the strength of rocks over long time scales, so it is essential to study the evolution of rock damage. In this study, resistivity, a non-destructive test parameter based on electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), was applied to study damage evolution in sandstone. Under cyclic loading conditions, EIS were simultaneously tested on twelve sandstone specimens, and specimens with different degrees of damage were obtained. The resistivity of the sandstone under different loading conditions was accurately obtained using EIS and equivalent circuit simulations, which in turn defined the damage variable of the sandstone. Selected specimens were also tested by computerized tomography (CT) scanning before and after loading. An exponential form of the damage evolution equation was established between the resistivity-defined damage variables and strain, and a damage constitutive model for the uniaxial cyclic loading of sandstone was established based on the damage evolution equation and the equivalent strain hypothesis. The results show that EISbased resistivity can accurately characterize the damage evolution of rocks, and the uniaxial cyclic loading damage calculated by the constitutive model was in good agreement with the experimental test results. The CT scans verify the accuracy of the resistivity-based definition of damage variables and indicate that the change in resistivity was due to the formation and propagation of cracks within the sandstone.
