Abstract:For small and medium size firms (SMEs), little is known regarding the relationship between the strategic pacing of acquisitions and alliances, their performance effects, and the moderating role of key contingencies. Building on learning theory, we begin to bridge this gap by investigating pacing of alliance and acquisition initiatives. We propose an inverted-U relationship between pacing and performance. Our contingency approach reasons that the nonlinear relationship is stronger for alliances than acquisitions and for cross-border than domestic alliances. We also suggest a Red Queen effect for the pacing of acquisitions. Drawing on a sample of SMEs in the specialty pharmaceutical industry, we find considerable support for our propositions. Temporal theorizing assists SMEs' managers in effectively incorporating a time dimension in the mobilization and allocation of scarce organizational resources.
