Abstract:We study firms' merger and acquisition (M&A) and alliance behaviors from a temporal perspective, focusing particularly on the sequences of these firm-level activities. We draw on recent work in sociology and provide theoretical underpinnings why sequence matters and how interdependence between different sequences occurs. Using optimal matching techniques and clustering analysis, we empirically identify seven different sequence patterns. We conclude that firms' sequences of M&A's and alliances do not occur in infinite combinations, at least not with equal likelihood. We further establish the predictive validity of different sequences by testing their performance implications. We find that certain sequences are more likely to generate higher performance than others. However, such a relationship is largely contingent on firms' developmental stages.
