On John B. Cobb, Jr.'S Creative Transformation And Its Meaning To Sino-Christian Theology

Abstract:In recent years, many Chinese scholars are attracted by the thought of process theologian John B. Cobb, Jr. (1925-) and have made good progress in the research of his thought. This article focuses on the concept of creative transformation, as to further explain the aim of Cobb's theological thought of transforming Christianity and the world. The philosophical basis and the disciplinary paradigm of Christian theology need to be transformed in order to make Christianity more adaptable to the world. For instance, the creatively transformed Christianity shows its compatibility with the Bible, the science and the actuality, and thus provides people with insights to the society nowadays. Based on global consciousness, the transformed Christianity guides people to respect various cultural traditions and religious ways and to transcend the anthropocentric standpoint of political theology from an ecological perspective. Mutual understanding and respect lay the foundation for Christianity and other religious traditions to lead us to create a just, sustainable and non-violent world. Consequently, creative transformation, specifically manifested in the sinicization of process theology, has great significance and profound enlightenment to the indigenous development of Sino-Christian Theology.
