Abstract:A reasonable determination of seismic bedrock surface has a significant impact on the evaluation of design ground motion parameters. In this study, based on the borehole profiles in the downtown area of Suzhou (China), nine interfaces of soil layers, whose shear wave velocities range from 400 m/s to 800 m/s, are selected as the seismic bedrock surfaces. The equivalent linear viscoelastic model is employed to approximate nonlinear soil behavior, and the effects of bedrock surface depth on site surface motion are analyzed. The results show that: the surface peak ground acceleration (PGA) increases as the shear wave velocity of bedrock surface increases. However, the magnitude of increase reduces as the PGA of bedrock motion increases. Moreover, the surface acceleration response spectra (Sa) become larger as bedrock surface depth increases, and the values become smaller as the PGA of bedrock motion increases. In addition, under near-field medium bedrock motion, the depth of bedrock surface has significant influence on the values for the period less than 1.0 s. However, under far-field strong bedrock motion, the depth of bedrock surface has significant influence on the values for the period less than 4.0 s. The values under far-field ground motion are obviously higher than those under near-field ground motion. Therefore, it is appropriate to choose the interface of soil with shear velocity not less than 700 m/s as the seismic bedrock surface.
