Abstract:Mode division multiplexing (MDM) transmission based on few-mode fibers (FMFs) appears to be an alternative solution for overcoming the capacity limit of single-mode fibers (SMFs). A FMF coupler-based mode division multiplexer/demultiplexer (MMUX/DeMMUX) is proposed and theoretically investigated after the fabricated FMF is characterized. MMUXs/DeMMUXs with a mode contrast ratio (MCR) of more than 20 dB can be obtained for two-mode multiplexing and three-mode multiplexing over a wavelength span of 60 and 10 nm, respectively. We numerically verify the proposed MMUX/DeMMUX which has the advantages of high MCR, easy fabrication and maintenance, and low wavelength dependence.

Abstract:We present an ultra-broadband and low-modal-crosstalk mode multiplexer based on cascaded vertical directional couplers formed by adiabatic-tapered waveguides without mode conversion. The input and output ports of the mode multiplexer are designed in the same planar layer to meet the standard package requirement. We design and fabricate a three-mode mode multiplexer, which serves to spatially combine and separate the E11, E21 and E12 modes in the few-mode-core outputs without mode conversion with polymer material, where adiabatic tapers are utilized in the design of directional coupler to extend the operation wavelength and two pairs of directional couplers serve to suppress the modal crosstalks. We fabricate a typical device to demonstrate the idea. The fabricated device has a length of 29 mm, which provides coupling ratios higher than 97% and modal crosstalks lower than – 19.6 dB over the C+L band and beyond with weak polarization dependence. The proposed mode multiplexer is fiber capable and allows to connect with the few-mode fibers directly by the use of fan-in and fan-out technology. The proposed mode multiplexer is simple, scalable, and effective to extend the operation wavelength as well as suppressing the modal crosstalks, which provides a powerful device to manipulate the modes in a mode division multiplexing system and an effective method to realize an all-optical chip for simplifying the Multi-Input Multi-Output signal processing with low power consumption.

Abstract:We propose a low-crosstalk and broadband mode (de)multiplexer. It is designed by cascading mode (de)interleavers utilizing silicon waveguide asymmetric Y-junctions. Asymmetric Y-junctions of each stage are modular. For each asymmetric Y-junction, the even (odd) modes of the stem separated from the odd (even) modes evolve into the low-order modes of the wide (narrow) arm by controlling the widths of the two arms, and vice versa. A four-channel mode (de)multiplexer for TE polarization is analyzed as an example. Simulations show the four-channel mode (de)multiplexer pair has a low crosstalk (<−14.1dB) over a common spectral bandwidth of 280nm.

Abstract:Asymmetrical directional couplers aided with subwavelength sidewall corrugations are used to realize ultra-compact silicon mode (de)multiplexers at C-band. Three mode (de)multiplexers with ultra-short coupling lengths of 5.6/6.5/7.7 μm are designed to enable low-loss mode conversions between TE0 and TE1/2/3 modes. They are then cascaded to build a four-channel mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) link. The four mode channels present minimal on-chip insertion losses of 0.2/0.7/0.7/0.9 dB at their peak wavelengths. Measured cross talk levels of the four mode channels are better than -18.0/-19.1/-16.0/-18.2 dB within the wavelength range from 1530 nm to 1580 nm.

Abstract:We propose a broadband mode multiplexer based on the structure of cascaded planar and non-planar tapered directional couplers (DCs), which are designed for processing vertically symmetric and anti-symmetric modes. The DCs are tapered to widen the operating bandwidth, reduce the polarization dependence, and improve the fabrication tolerance. As an example, we design and fabricate a five-mode (de) multiplexer with polymer material to combine or separate the E-11, E-12, E-21, E-31, and E-22 modes. Our typical fabricated device has a length of 2.1 cm and shows the mode coupling efficiency of almost larger than 94.5% for each DC over the C + L band with weak polarization dependence. The proposed structure is scalable and can be implemented with different material platforms.

Abstract:Mode-division multiplexers (MDMUXs) play a pivotal role in enabling the manipulation of an arbitrary optical state within few-mode fibers, offering extensive utility in the fields of mode-division multiplexing and structured optical field engineering. The exploration of MDMUXs employing cascaded resonant couplers has garnered significant attention owing to their scalability, exceptional integration capabilities, and the anticipated low insertion loss. In this work, we present the successful realization of high-quality orbital angular momentum MDMUX corresponding to topological charges 0, +/- 1, and +/- 2, achieved through the utilization of cascaded fused-biconical tapered couplers. Notably, the measured insertion losses at 1550 nm exhibit remarkable minimal values: 0.31, 0.10, and 0.64 dB, respectively. Furthermore, the 80% efficiency bandwidths exceed 106, 174, and 174 nm for these respective modes. The MDMUX is composed of precision-manufactured high-quality mode selective couplers (MSCs). Utilizing a proposed supermode propagation method based on mode composition analysis, we precisely describe the operational characteristics of MSCs. Building upon this comprehensive understanding, we embark on a pioneering analysis elucidating the influence of MSC cascading order on the performance of MDMUXs. Our theoretical investigation substantiates that when constructing MDMUXs, MSCs should adhere to a specific cascading sequence.

Abstract:A mode-(de)multiplexer with low loss and large spectral bandwidth is proposed. The device is designed by utilizing a structure with cascaded asymmetric Y-junctions. By carefully controlling the widths of the wide and narrow arms of the Y-junctions, the fundamental mode of a narrow arm excites the higher-order mode of its stem in the multiplexing case, and a high-order mode of the stem separated from other lower-order modes evolves into the fundamental mode of the narrow arm in the demultiplexing case. As an example, a 1 × 4 mode-(de)multiplexer is analyzed by using the beam propagation method. Simulation results show the demultiplexed crosstalk is lower than -21.8 dB, under a common spectral bandwidth of 140 nm. The insertion loss is negligible.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate the ultra-compact on-chip silicon mode (de)multiplexers [(De)MUXs] based on a tapered bent asymmetric direction coupler. By combining the advantages of tapered asymmetric directional coupler and bent directional coupler, low loss, broad bandwidth, and good robustness against fabrication variations can be obtained within ultra-compact coupling length. The coupling length of the proposed TE1-TE0 and TE2-TE0mode (de)multiplexers is less than 8.7 µm. Experimental results reveal that, over the wavelength range from 1.534 μm to 1.6 μm, the insertion loss is lower than 1.4 dB and 1.55 dB for the TE1-TE0 and TE2-TE0 mode multiplexing, respectively, and the crosstalk is lower than -10dB.

Abstract:A compact and broadband nine-channel modedivision (de) multiplexer is proposed and demonstrated. The asymmetrical directional coupler based multimode (de) multiplexers and the densely packed multimode waveguide arrays are combined to enhance the mode capacity. The proposed (de) multiplexer shows theoretical crosstalk that is < -15 dB over an 100-nm wavelength band for all the nine channels. The experimental results show a low crosstalk that is < -15 dB over a 55-nm wavelength range for all the supported modes.

Abstract:A novel adiabatic couplers (ACs) based broadband and fabrication-tolerant two-mode multiplexer (MUX) is designed using silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. Being different from the previously reported ACs-based scheme, the converted and multiplexed signals are on conventional modes, rather than supermodes. The experimental results are in good agreement with the simulations. Over a wavelength range of 75 nm measured, the crosstalk is lower than −20 dB, and the insertion loss is ~1 dB. The eye diagram and bit error rate measurements validate the good performance of the proposed mode MUX. The investigation on fabrication tolerance indicates reasonable performance degradation for a large gap deviation from −30 to 30 nm and etching depth deviation from −50 to 50 nm.

Abstract:Mode (de)multiplexers (MDMs) serve as critical foundational elements within systems for facilitating high-capacity communication, relying on mode conversions achieved through directional coupler (DC) structures. However, DC structures are challenged by dispersion issues for broadband mode coupling, particularly for high-order modes. In this work, based on the principles of phase control theory, we have devised an approach to mitigate the dispersion challenges, focusing on a thin-film lithium niobate-on-onsulator (LNOI) platform. This solution involves integrating a customized inverse-dispersion section into the device architecture, offsetting minor phase shifts encountered during the mode coupling process. By employing this approach, we have achieved broadband mode conversion from TE0 to TE1 and TE0 to TE2 within a 300 nm wavelength range, and the maximum deviations were maintained below −0.68 dB and −0.78 dB, respectively. Furthermore, the device exhibited remarkably low crosstalk, reaching down to −26 dB.

Abstract:A broadband two-mode multi/demultiplexer using asymmetric Y-junctions is designed and experimentally demonstrated on a silicon-on-insulator platform for on-chip mode-division multiplexing applications. Within a bandwidth from 1513 to 1619 nm, the fabricated device, which consists of a two-mode multiplexer, a multimode straight waveguide, and a two-mode demultiplexer, exhibits demultiplexing crosstalk of less than -9.1 dB. The demultiplexing crosstalk as low as -42.1 dB, lower than -12.8 dB over the C band can be obtained. The measured insertion loss varies from 0.40 to 0.56 dB at a wavelength of 1550 nm. A transmission experiment of 10 Gbit/s electrical signals carried on TE0 and TE1 modes is successfully achieved with open and clear eye diagrams. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Space-division multiplexing (SDM) is one of the key enabling technologies to increase the capacity of fiber communication systems. However, implementing SDM-based systems using multimode fiber has been challenging with the need for compact, low-cost, and scalable mode de/multiplexer (DE/MUX). Here we present a novel integrated mode MUX for few-mode fibers (FMFs) which can launch up to eight spatial and polarization channels. The new design is composed of a two-dimensional multimode grating coupler (MMGC), highly compact mode size converters (MSCs), and adiabatic directional couplers (ADCs). Eight data lanes in FMFs can be selectively launched with integrated optical phase shifters. Experimental results reveal efficient chip-to-fiber coupling with peak efficiencies of -3.8 dB, -5.5 dB, -3.6 dB, and -4.1 dB for LP01, LP11a, LP11b, and LP21b modes, respectively. Meanwhile, the proposed design can efficiently couple all the degenerate LP modes in a two-mode FMF, allowing signal descrambling in the demultiplexer. Thanks to the use of integrated subwavelength Mikaelian lens for mode-independent field size conversion with loss $\leq$0.25 dB, the total footprint of the MMGC and MSCs is only 35x35 $\mu$m$^{2}$. The proposed design shows great potential for densely integrated photonic circuits in future SDM applications.

Abstract:A multi-channel mode (de) multiplexer based on the super-mode evolution in cascaded dual-core adiabatic tapers is designed and realized with ultrathin (similar to 50 nm) siliconon-insulator nanowire waveguides. This dual-core adiabatic taper is designed optimally, so that all the supermodes are confined in the wide core at the input end and the highest-order supermode is localized in the narrow core at the output end. In this way, the highest-order supermode is dropped as the fundamental mode at the cross port. As an example, a (de) multiplexer with three mode channels is designed and fabricated. From the measured spectral responses, the fabricated device has a crosstalk lower than -20 dB and an excess loss less than 0.2 dB in a bandwidth of similar to 65 nm. Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel multimode ultra-compact mode (de)multiplexer for highly integrated on-chip mode-division multiplexing systems. This device is composed of a wide divergence angle asymmetric Y-junction based on subwavelength structure and optimized using an inverse design method. The proposed device occupied a footprint of only 2.4 × 3 µm2. The measured insertion loss and crosstalk were less than 1dB and -24 dB from 1530 nm to 1590 nm for both TE0 mode and TE1 mode, respectively. Likewise, a three mode multiplexer is also designed and fabricated with a compact footprint of 3.6 × 4.8 µm2. Furthermore, our scheme could also be expanded to include more modes.

Abstract:We demonstrate an ultra-broadband 16-channel mode division (de) multiplexer utilizing densely packed bent waveguide arrays (DPBWAs). The phase mismatch is realized by using bent waveguides with a different radius instead of changing the waveguide width. The proposed structure shows theoretical insertion losses (ILs) that are <0.1 dB and crosstalk (CT) that is <-30 dB over a 100 nm wavelength range for all the channels. The fabricated device, which consists of a multiplexer, DPBWAs, and a demultiplexer, exhibits ILs that are <1 dB and crosstalk that is <-20 dB over an similar to 80 nm wavelength band.
