Abstract:In order to study coupled optoelectronic oscillators ( COEO) further, the mode selection theory of COEO was expounded .The phase matching condition to maintain optimum mode-locked state was given .The affecting factors of phase noise of radio frequency signal were analyzed .The experiment of COEO based on polarization-maintaining mechanism was conducted .By adjusting the polarization-maintaining variable optical fiber delay lines in the optical ring cavity and the optoelectric microwave oscillation loop to change the cavity length , the relationship between cavity length and oscillation frequency was obtained .Meanwhile, by using the frequency discrimination method , phase noise performances of 5GHz radio frequency ( RF) signals under different operating conditions were measured and the effective factors were studied .The experimental results demonstrate that oscillation mode depends on the cavity length of optical ring cavity .Optical signal polarization, phase matching and loop length have influence on the phase noise of the RF signals . The coupled optoelectronic oscillator of 5GHz RF signal and phase noises of -136dBc/Hz at 10kHz offset frequency is obtained , whose phase noise is the lowest in our country as far as we know .

Abstract:A novel passive phase compensated optoelectronic oscillator (PPC-OEO) with low frequency drift is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. It consists of a main oscillation loop and a compensation path. A passive phase compensation technique (PPCT) is adopted for the long-term frequency stabilization of the OEO. Once the optoelectronic oscillation is established, the OEO output frequency is stably locked to twice the frequency of an external signal injected into the compensation path. The experimental results show that the frequency drift of the generated radio frequency (RF) signal at 10 GHz is about 5 Hz over 6 hours. The simple structure of the proposed OEO, without any temperature control or active servo control, makes it highly reliable.

Abstract:A comprehensive model for phase noise characteristics of an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) is presented. The phase noise distributions of an OEO especially near the carrier are explained comprehensively, combining the Yao-Maleki model and Leeson model. An experiment is carried on for verification of the OEO's phase noise distribution. Based on the comprehensive model, the phase noise distribution of an OEO can be predictably designed.

Abstract:Frequency stability optimization of an X-band optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) using the technique of phase-locked loop (PLL) and dual loop self-injection-locking (DSIL) is proposed and demonstrated. The relationship between the loop transfer characteristics of a PLL and the phase noise of the oscillation signal is analyzed. The close-in phase noise and frequency overlapping Allan deviation (ADEV) of the OEO are optimized by properly choosing the bandwidth of the loop filter of the PLL. The phase noise of the OEO is suppressed by 41.5dB at 100Hz offset and 21.3dB at 10kHz offset with PLL and DSIL. The frequency overlapping ADEV achieved 7.03×10–12 at average time of 100s, which is several orders of magnitude better than that of the DSIL OEO and the free-running OEO, proves the high oscillation stability of proposed scheme.

Abstract:Low noise microwave source is essential for many subjects, including radar, communication, test instrumentation, and sensing. Photonic-based optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) can address some challenges faced by electronic oscillators, including phase noise performance, and wideband frequency tunability. However, a scaling challenge for the OEO is the frequency control, including long-term stability, frequency resolution, frequency accuracy and frequency settling time. In this paper, an ultra-low phase noise and frequency agile X-band frequency synthesizer based a phase locked OEO and a direct digital synthesizer is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Single-sideband (SSB) phase noise of −139 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset and frequency switching time of 176 ns are achieved.

Abstract:In this paper,frequency stabilization of X-band OptoElectronic Oscillator (OEO) is obtained by phase locking to an Oven-Controlled Crystal Oscillator (OCXO) through a fractional Phase-Locked Loop (PLL).The relationship between the loop transfer characteristics of PLL and the phase noise of the oscillation is analyzed.The overall phase noise performance of the OEO is improved by Self-Injection-Locking (SIL) approach,where the phase noise of the OEO is suppressed for over 20 dB within frequency offsets from 10 Hz to 10 kHz.SIL OEO is phase locked with a 100 MHz OCXO.The phase noise of the PLL-locked SIL OEO is-55 dBc/Hz at 10 Hz offset and -124 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset and the frequency overlapping Allan DEViation (ADEV) reaches 1.14× 10-11 at an average time of 100 s,and this validates high frequency stability of the obtained output.

Abstract:Phase noise is a key parameter to evaluate the short-term stability of a microwave oscillator. This metric is of major concern for many applications. A phase locked loop (PLL) is widely used to extract the phase noise. However, due to the limitation of the phase noise of the reference, it is still a technical challenge to precisely characterize the phase noise of a high frequency carrier. To address this issue, we propose a high sensitivity microwave phase noise analyzer by using a photonic-based reference. By combining an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) and a direct digital synthesizer, we achieve a 9 GHz to 11 GHz frequency tunable reference with phase noise of -140 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset, side-mode suppression ratio of 128 dB, and frequency switching time of 176 ns. Thanks to this low phase noise reference, we attain an X-band phase noise analyzer with an excellent sensitivity of -139 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset without cross-correlation. This is the first time to realize a PLL-based phase noise analyzer utilizing an OEO. We thoroughly present a theoretical analysis of our proposed system. Benefiting from the OEO's phase noise independent of frequency, the operation frequency of our proposed system can be extended to the millimeter-wave range while maintaining high sensitivity. Abstract:A highly sensitive demodulation approach of a vibration-induced phase shift based on a low-noise optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The vibration-induced optical phase variation is directly converted to the electrical oscillating signal of the OEO with carrier phase-shifted double-sideband (CPS-DSB) modulation, which is realized by cascading a dual-output Mach-Zehnder modulator (DOMZM) and a fiber interferometer. Theoretically, within a CPS-DSB modulated OEO, the minimum detectable optical phase shift is determined by the phase noise achievable, and the sensitivity of the optical phase shift demodulation no longer depends on its frequency. A proof-of-concept OEO oscillating at 100 MHz with ultralow phase noise is built for demonstration. The achieved minimum detectable optical phase shift is 0.58 mu rad / root Hz at 1 kHz and 0.21 mu rad / root Hz at 10 kHz, which are the best results ever reported, to the best of our knowledge. Abstract:A low phase noise and highly stable 10 GHz RF signal generation system based on a sub-harmonic injection locked optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. By externally injecting a sub-harmonic of the 10 GHz free-running OEO to the OEO loop, the phase noise at 10 Hz offset of the 10 GHz oscillation RF signal is reduced by 40 dB when compared with the free-running OEO. The influence of the power of the injection RF signal on the phase noise performance of the injection locked OEO is also experimentally investigated.

Abstract:A novel scheme of microwave generation based on heterodyne phase locking of an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) is proposed and demonstrated. The oscillation signal of a dual loop self-injection-locking OEO (DSILOEO) is mixed with a voltage controlled crystal oscillator (VCXO) and its up-converted output is phase-locked by a reference source to develop a heterodyne phase-locked-loop. The DSILOEO has suppressed phase noise while its frequency fluctuation is cancelled out by the VCXO so that low phase noise and excellent long-term stability can be realized independently for microwave generation, which greatly increases the design flexibility. The experimental results show that the phase noise at 10-kHz offset carrier of -122 dBc/Hz and the Allan deviation of 1.6 x 10(-12) are achieved.

Abstract:Photonic-based optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) is a good candidate to generate high spectral purity microwave signal. To improve its frequency accuracy and long-term stability, an analog phase locked loop (PLL) by using a double balanced mixer as phase detector is widely used. However, due to the limitations of the acquisition range and pull-in time of the analog mixer based PLL, it is hard to realize a highly stable OEO. In this paper, we use a frequency-multiplying PLL with a phase and frequency detector to stabilize the frequency of OEO. The utilization of digital phase and frequency detector can enlarge the acquisition range and reduce the pull-in time of the phase locked OEO. Experimentally, we attain a 9.2 GHz microwave signal with single-sideband (SSB) phase noise of -110 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset and Allan deviation of 10 -10 at average time of 1000 s.

Abstract:Phase noise measurement of a dual-loop optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on a dual-photonic-delay line cross-correlation method is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The dual-loopOEOand the phase noise measurement system are combined by sharing the transmitter of the optical link, which makes the structure of the system simpler. In part of the dual-loop OEO, the 10 km long fiber is shared by the two loops of the OEO utilizing a wavelength division multiplexing technique. Higher quality factors are obtained simultaneously by the two loops. In part of the phase noise measurement system, a lower phase noise floor is realized through a cross-correlation method. In the experiments, a signal with oscillation frequency of 10.664 GHz and a side-mode suppression ratio of 82.4 dB is generated. Its phase noise is evaluated by the proposed system and PN9000C. The measured results of the two systems are in perfect agreement. The phase noise of the signal is measured as -122 dBc/Hz at a 10 kHz frequency offset, and the phase noise floor of the 10 mu s delay phase noise measurement system is -148 dBc/Hz at a 10 kHz offset at 10.6 GHz, when the number of averaged results is 100. Abstract:Highly stable, low phase noise microwave oscillators are essential for various applications. An optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) can overcome the short-term phase noise limitation of pure electronic oscillators at high oscillation frequency. Nonetheless, the long-term frequency stability should be addressed. To stabilize the frequency of OEO, a phase-locked loop (PLL) is widely used to synchronize the OEO to a stable reference. However, due to the narrow free-spectral-range (FSR) of the oscillation cavity of the OEO, the pull-in range of the PLL is limited. It is challenging to acquire phase-locking at startup and phase-relocking when mode-hopping of OEO occurs. Here, by using an automatic frequency calibration (AFC) assisted PLL, we attain a highly stable 10 GHz phase-locked OEO with robust phase-locking at startup and phase-relocking when mode-hopping of OEO occurs, for the first time. With the use of a fast digitally-controlled frequency shifter and a real-time frequency error detection unit in the AFC loop, the phase-locking and phase-relocking time are below 120 ms. Furthermore, it shows the phase noise of -135 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset, side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of 128 dBc, and Allan deviation of 4.8×10-11 at 5000 s for the phase-locked OEO. We thoroughly investigate the dynamics of the automatic frequency calibration, the phase-locking process, the phase-relocking after OEO mode-hopping, the system under vibration, and the frequency switching. Our approach is promising to generate a highly stable, low phase noise, and determinate frequency microwave signal, which can be used as a low phase noise reference for a microwave frequency synthesizer and high performance sampling clock for a data conversion system.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal is a superior dual-functional waveform for the integration of radar sensing and communication in intelligent transportation. But the sensitivity to phase noise is a serious issue introducing interference and causing performance degradation during demodulation. In this paper, we explore the essential mechanism of the action and generation of phase noise through theoretical analysis, where the OFDM demodulation process and power spectrum density (PSD) of phase noise is discussed in the frequency domain, and draw the conclusion that high-speed phase jitter will cause unrecoverable deterioration of OFDM demodulation. Therefore, a photonics-aided radar and communication integrated system based on Optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) is proposed. The positive feedback oscillation with long energy storage time make the phase noise pattern of OEO just suitable to against the phase noise sensitivity of OFDM. A proof-of-concept experiment is demonstrated at 24 GHz with 2 GHz bandwidth to verify the radar sensing and communication function. A two-dimensional radar imaging with a range resolution of 0.075 m and velocity resolution of 4.4 km/h, a communication capacity of 6.4 Gbps is obtained. A quantitative performance comparison is also carried out. By using an ordinary microwave source and OEO separately, the demodulation constellation and error vector magnitude (EVM) under different subcarrier spacing is measured and compared. The result is corresponding to our analysis with the EVM decreasing from 12.5% to 4.7% under subcarrier spacing of 125 kHz.

Abstract:The characteristics of two types of Optoelectronic Oscillators (OEOs) based on phase-locked loop technique and injection-locked technique were analyzed and compared. The noise transfer functions of the two types of OEOs were deduced and verified by experiments. The similarities and the respective merits between the two techniques were discussed. There is a problem of losing lock in the two types of OEOs because the optical fiber has a high sensitivity to temperature. To solve this problem, a locking state monitoring and feedback system was designed according to the phase difference between the output signal and the reference signal. The system was also verified by experiments.

Abstract:An optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) system is built up with a high-speed silicon microring modulator. The modulator is based on a p-n doped ring resonator with a radius of 10 μm. Its electro-optic (EO) 3 dB bandwidth is ∼31.7 GHz, which makes it suitable for generating multi-GHz radio frequency signals. By using this modulator, one of the essential components of an OEO, the EO converter, has been dramatically miniaturized. At the same time, assisted by the ring resonator, the phase noise of the generated 10 GHz signal (nearly −90 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset) is not compromised compared to other integrated OEOs with mm footprint modulators. This is an important step toward a compact, scalable, and fully integrated silicon photonics-based OEO system together with our existing integrated light sources and photodetectors.

Abstract:Accurate, and low phase noise RF synthesis is crucial for various applications. The phase-locked loop (PLL) is the common architecture to synthesize high spectral purity RF carriers with desired frequencies. However, the phase noise is limited by the electrical voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs). Optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) is an alternative of RF oscillator that allows overcoming the phase noise limitation of electrical oscillator. Here, we propose a novel photonic RF synthesizer by using a voltage-controlled optically tunable OEO as VCO in a PLL. By phase-locking OEO to a tunable RF reference, tunable RF carrier with precise frequency can be synthesized. The OEO incorporates a RF photonic filter as the mode selector harnessing the light-sound interaction in a fiber, namely the stimulated Brillouin scattering. Due to the low dissipation rate of the confined acoustic wave, a narrowband anti-Stokes loss spectrum is formed, which can be transformed into a high quality factor tunable RF bandpass filter with the aid of a phase modulated optical probe wave. It facilitates the removal of the supermodes and enables the frequency tuning of OEO. Experimentally, we attain a RF synthesizer with frequency synthesis tuning range from 6 GHz to 12 GHz. The minimum tuning step is 8 Hz. At 8.4 GHz, the phase noise is -125 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset. The phase-locking dynamics, frequency tunability, and phase noise are thoroughly investigated. Our approach offers the prospects of low phase noise RF synthesis with wide frequency range.
