Abstract:We first proposed and demonstrated a distributed fiber sensor with high spatial resolution for detecting and locating distributed stress. The sensor system consists of a section polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF) and an optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR). The PMF used as sensing element and the polarization mode coupling loss in PM fiber resulting from the external stress would produce. Through monitoring the backscattered light with the distributed polarization mode coupling loss along the PMF under test, the distributed fiber optic stress sensor based on polarization-sensitive OFDR (P-OFDR) was obtained. In our experiment, a tunable single frequency fiber ring laser with narrow linewidth was developed to act as scanning frequency light source, and then the P-OFDR system was structured. The fiber laser and the distributed fiber sensor system have been investigated experimentally in detail. The experimental results show that its spatial resolution is about 5cm, the sensitivity is less than -80dBm and the maximum dynamic range are about 70dB. With advantages of high spatial resolution, high sensitivity and large dynamic range due to extremely narrow linewidth and heterodyne detection, this distributed fiber optic stress sensor has a number of potential applications for smart structure, structural health monitoring, defense and security monitoring.

Abstract:Phase sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) has been widely used in many applications for its distributed sensing ability on weak disturbance all along the sensing fiber. However, traditional Φ-OTDR cannot make quantitative measurement on the external disturbance due to the randomly distributed position and reflectivity of scatters within the optical fiber. Recently, some methods have been proposed to realize quantitative measurement of dynamic strain. In these literatures, the fiber with or without FBGs in practice was easily damaged and with difficulty of maintenance. PZT is employed to generate strain event in the fiber. There is a large gap compared with the real detecting environment, which will not reveal the full performance of the sensing system. In this paper, a distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS) system for dynamic strain measurement based on artificial reflector is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The fiber under test (FUT) is composed by four 20-meter long single mode optical fiber patch cords (OFPCs), which are cascaded with ferrule contactor/physical contact (FC/PC) connectors via fiber flanges. The fiber facet of FC/PC connector forms an artificial reflector. When the interval between the two reflectors is changed, the phase of the interference signal will also be changed. A symmetric 3×3 coupler with table-look-up scheme is introduced to discriminate the phase change through interference intensity. In our experiment, the center 10m section of the second OFPC is attached to the bottom of an aluminum alloy plate. An ordinary loudspeaker box was located on the top of the aluminum alloy plate. The dynamic strain generated by the loudspeaker box is transmitted from the aluminum alloy plate to the OFPC. Experimental results show that the proposed method has a good frequency response characteristic up to 3.2 kHz and a linear intensity response of R2=0.9986 while the optical probe pulse width and repetition rate were 100ns and 10 kHz respectively. Meanwhile, triangle and cosine amplitude-modulated (AM) dynamic strain applied on the fiber are successfully discriminated. The artificial reflectors based on FC/PCs were easily assembled and maintained, and the method of vibration transmission closely resembled the real circumstance than PZT. Therefore, these advantages will extend the potential of this Φ-OTDR technology in structure health monitoring.

Abstract:We describe a quasi-distributed optical fiber strain sensor, whose principle of operation is based on the coherent frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) reflectometry technique. The sensing system is basically composed of a laser diode, which is frequency swept by a triangle waveform injection current and an unbalanced two-beam interferometer. Its test arm consists of a number of single-mode fibers, which act as sensing fibers, with a mirror at the far end and mechanical splices as the connectors as well as the reflectors. Theoretical analysis shows that the measuring resolution of the strain is inversely proportional to the length of the sensing fiber. To measure the strain variation of each sensing fiber, the phase shifts of the beat signals are demodulated by a heterodyne signal processing system. The requirement of a high precision temperature control of light source can be eliminated in this way, since temperature effect is insignificant to the phase demodulation technique. To calibrate and verify the linearity, feasibility, and accuracy of this system, tensile and bending tests were carried out and strain gauge was employed as the benchmarking tool over the experimental results. It was observed that this system is feasible and its accuracy is excellent. © 2002 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

Abstract:A high resolution distributed dynamic strain sensing has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on the combination of Brillouin and Rayleigh scattering. The proposed scheme employs the same set of frequency-scanning optical pulses modulated through the frequency-agile technique for fast measurements. The Brillouin optical time domain analyzer (BOTDA) technology is used to provide absolute measurement benchmarks, while the phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometer (-OTDR) technology is used to capture relative strain changes in details. Two groups of 100 Hz vibrations with different amplitude (300 n and 250 n) have been measured under two different absolute strains (1173.9 and 525.3 ), which allows for dynamic absolute strain measurement with a high resolution of 8.4 n.

Abstract:A single-shot distributed dynamic strain sensor is proposed with high spatial resolution and broad detection bandwidth. Linear frequency modulated pulse is employed as the probe pulse, which not only solves the trade-off between spatial resolution and sensing distance, but also avoids the time-consuming stepped frequency tuning process. The matrix of Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) at multiple frequencies over the fiber is obtained using the first probe pulse. The strain variation is retrieved from the corresponding frequency shift of the following probe pulses using RBS signature matching. In the demonstrational experiment, distributed vibration measurement with 0.9 m spatial resolution, 224 pε/√ Hz strain resolution, 5 kHz response bandwidth and 25.7 dB signal-to-noise radio is realized over 10-km sensing fiber.

Abstract:A new method to monitor reinforcement stress is proposed.The distributed optical fiber can be rapidly laid into the concrete.The new method is feasible to evaluate structure performance because it can carry out stable,long-term,real-time reinforcement stress measurement.The measurement of the stress of reinforced bar can give more correct assessment of the durability of concrete structures.In order to increase the spatial resolution,the coil method of fiber felt is developed.The influence of radius of curvature of fiber is studied.The measurements of strain-gage transducer and the optical fiber are compared through tests of a beam.The results show the proposed method is feasible and valid.

Abstract:Distributed optical fiber sensors (DOFSs) have faced the challenge of measuring transverse stress along the fiber and the current main approach has been based on polarization coupling effect in polarization-maintaining fibers (PMFs), which has short sensing length and high dependence on direction of exerted stress. Instead, here we propose a novel distributed transverse stress sensor (DTSS) based on coupling effect between linearly-polarized (LP) modes in weakly-coupled few-mode-fibers (FMFs). In this scheme, multiple LP modes could be considered as independent spatial channels without stress perturbation because of ultralow inherent modal crosstalk, while quantifiable and spatially-resolvable mode coupling for a probe signal will occur under transverse stress satisfying phase-matching conditions. A proof-of-concept DTSS system is verified based on weakly-coupled two-mode fibers and mode-selective couplers for mode conversion. Moreover, we show that the scheme is little affected by mild common parameters including temperature, strain, twist, direction of stress, or state-of-polarization (SOP), which is crucial for accurate stress analysis under complex environmental conditions. The proposed DTSS scheme has simple structure, high flexibility for different sensing ranges and resolutions, and high collaborating capability with other sensing mechanisms.

Abstract:A high-performance distributed optical fiber sensor based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) for dynamic strain measurement has been proposed. In this newly designed system, ultraweak fiber Bragg gratings (UWFBGs) are sparsely embedded in the sensing fiber. Through an unbalanced 3 × 3 coupler structure, the reflected lights from two adjacent UWFBGs would be mixed with each other and then split into three parts for phase demodulation. Then, a novelty table-look-up scheme is introduced to precisely demodulate the frequency, amplitude, and phase of dynamic strain. Rayleigh back-scattering light is utilized to identify and locate the accurate position of vibration event between two adjacent UWFBGs. The experimental results show that the proposed system is capable of reconstructing the vibration with a linear intensity response of R2 = 0.9986 and a fiber length variation sensitivity of 117 pm/(Hz)1/2. Meanwhile, a wide frequency response band from 50 to 2075 Hz is achieved with high signal-to-noise ratio above 56 dB.

Abstract:A novel method to realize high spatial resolution distributed strain measurement is proposed based on phase demodulation scheme of optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR). Strain information can be demodulated directly by analyzing the phase change of Rayleigh backscattered light. Strain location can be obtained with high spatial resolution by cross-correlation method using a wide scanning range of tunable laser source. Based on the above scheme, breakpoint detection with 0.1 mm spatial resolution has been demonstrated, static and dynamic strain up to 100 Hz could be distributedly measured with 10 cm spatial resolution over 200 m sensing fiber, and the minimum measurable strain is about 1 με.
Structural Health Monitoring Using A Novel Fiber Optic Fabry-Perot Sensor System

Abstract:An optical fiber extrinsic Fabry-Perot(F-P) interferometric sensor based on the phase demodulation technique was developed, which could be used to detect the stress and the low-frequency acoustic waves induced by the damage of the civil engineering structures. The sensing probe, manufactured by using the CO2 laser thermal fusion method, possesses a good long-term stability and long-life, and is capable to interrogate the damage of the civil engineering structures in the harsh industry environment. The interference principle of low finesse F-P cavity and the sensing mechanism of the sensor are elaborated. A novel sensor system consisted of the laser source, the 1 2 optical fiber coupler, the signal conditioning unit and signals processing unit is proposed, which is easily expanded to a multi-sensor array system for the multi-point detection of damage signals. The phase demodulation technique is proposed to interrogate the output signals of the sensor. The test results show that the sensor system provides a very high sensitivity when the cavity length changes induced by the stress signals in the structure, and can successfully measures low-frequency acoustic waves induced by the impact.

Abstract:Typically, the realization of strain vector sensing based on traditional optical fiber sensing is difficult. To address this, in this study, a multi-core optical fiber strain vector sensing system based on an in-phase and quadrature ( IQ) modulated optical frequency domain reflector ( OFDR) is designed and verified. The IQ modulation technique is used to perform a linear frequency sweep of the light source, and the strain vector information of a seven-core fiber after bending is obtained from the OFDR system using the spatial structure relation of multi- core fibers. Experimental results demonstrate that the spatial resolution of the bending strain is 28. 35 cm in an 87 m seven- core fiber with a sweep frequency of 990 MHz. When the bending curvature of the optical fiber is 1. 78 m(-1), the angular resolution is 29 degrees. Moreover, the simulation analysis indicates that when the sweep frequency range increases to 10 GHz, a theoretical angular resolution of 1. 02 degrees can be achieved, which can further improve the system performance.

Abstract:A sensing system is proposed for quantitative measurement of large-range dynamic nanostrain based on a phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometer, where the coherent detection and I/Q demodulation methods are employed to demodulate both the phase and the amplitude of the Rayleigh scattering light in real time. A nanopositioning translation stage is utilized to apply precise nanostrain to fiber. By measuring phase differences between two adjacent sections, the quantitative nanostrain with a large measurement range is demonstrated; this is also a method to measure the strain parameter of refractive index. For the Panda polarization-maintaining fiber under test in the experiment, the strain parameter of phase difference is measured to be 8.714 mrad/(nε·m), while the strain parameter of refractive index is measured to be -0.3751ε-1. As a proof of the concept, the dynamic strain sensing with a range of 10-1000 nε is experimentally demonstrated, and the strain resolution is 1 or 2 nε, corresponding to 5 or 2.5 m spatial resolution, respectively. The experimental measurement also shows a triangular wave with a 12-Hz vibrating frequency and a 100-nε strain amplitude as well as a 188-Hz resonant signal of the tensile section.

Abstract:Aiming at realizing a long-range and distributed static strain sensing system with nano-strain resolution realized using optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR), which is required for many practical applications, this paper provides a theoretical analysis for this system by using one-dimensional scattering model with backscattering process modelled by a set of discrete scatterers. Based on this model, the main noise sources of the sensing system are thoroughly analysed, which mainly include the intensity noise, the random drift of the optical frequency, the phase noise of the optical source, and the phase noise caused by the frequency sweep nonlinearity. The theoretical prediction agrees well with the experimental results. In the experiments, by eliminating the main noise in the system, a distributed static strain sensing system is achieved over a 25-km-long fiber with a spatial resolution of 2.5 m and a strain resolution of u003c100 nano strain. This paper provides a reference for how to optimize OFDR-based distributed static strain sensing system to obtain an ultra-high performance.

Abstract:In this paper, a temperature insensitive wide-dynamic-range distributed strain sensor with centimeter-level spatial resolution based on optical frequency domain reflection technology is proposed. It adopts a polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PMPCF) as the sensing fiber, and experimental results demonstrate that its temperature sensitivity is much smaller than that of the standard polarization-maintaining fiber(PMF). Benefited from the specially designed cross-correlation algorithm, the sensor achieves the maximum measurable strain reaches 7000 με with spatial resolution of 1.66 cm. This provides a new approach to address current issues with special fiber sensors, such as single-point sensing and low spatial resolution, which shows great significance for structural health monitoring of buildings, bridges and tunnels with urgent requirement of large dynamic range.

Abstract:Structural Health Monitoring, Ahead of Print. Material cracking is one of the key mechanisms contributing to structural failure. Distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) can measure the strain profile along optical fiber distributively. However, the conventional strain measurement using a Brillouin-DFOS system (Brillouin optical time-domain analysis/reflectometry (BOTDA/R)) has a decimeter-order spatial resolution, making it difficult to measure the highly localized strain generated by a sub-millimeter crack. This paper introduces a crack analysis method based on decomposing the Brillouin scattering spectrum to overcome the spatial resolution induced crack measurement limitation of the BOTDA/R system. The method uses the non-negative least squares algorithm to back-calculate the strain profile within the spatial resolution around each measurement point. The performance of this method is verified by a four point bending test of a brittle slag cement-cement-bentonite beam. The crack width estimation error is improved to ±0.005 mm for a crack as narrow as 0.76 mm.

Abstract:We propose a novel sideband interrogation technique with multiplex radio frequency intensity and phase modulation to measure the resonance frequency difference between two optical resonators. Based on this new technique, an ultrahighly sensitive fiber-optic static strain sensor system consisting of a pair of identical fiber Fabry-Perot interferometers is built by incorporating a cross-correlation data processing algorithm. A static strain resolution down to 0.8 ne is demonstrated experimentally, which makes the sensor system a useful tool for geophysical research applications. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Over the past three decades, extensive research activity on Brillouin scattering-based distributed optical fiber sensors has led to the availability of commercial instruments capable of measuring the static temperature/strain distribution over kilometer distances and with high spatial resolution, with applications typically covering structural and environmental monitoring. At the same time, the interest in dynamic measurements has rapidly grown due to the relevant number of applications which could benefit from this technology, including structural analysis for defect identification, vibration detection, railway traffic monitoring, shock events detection, and so on. In this paper, we present an overview of the recent advances in Brillouin-based distributed optical fiber sensors for dynamic sensing. The aspects of the Brillouin scattering process relevant in distributed dynamic measurements are analyzed, and the different techniques are compared in terms of performance and hardware complexity.
A Multiplexed Optical Fiber Sensor System For Distributed Measurement Of Structural Strains

Abstract:Structurally integrated optical fiber sensors form the basis for smart structure technology. Over the past decade a variety of sensor configurations have been developed for measurement of strains and deformations in structures. Strains and deformations alter the refractive index and the geometry of the optical fiber material. These changes perturb the intensity, phase, and polarization of the light-wave propagating along the probing fiber. The optical perturbations are detected for the determination of strain. The research presented here describes the development of a new optical fiber sensor system for measurement of structural strains based on white light interferometry. An optical switch provides for multiplexing of strain signals from various locations in the structure. Redundant Bragg grating type fiber optic sensors as well as strain gauges were employed for comparison and verification of strain signals as measured by the new system. The system provides capability for distributed sensing of strains in large structures.
