Abstract:For systems based on array source, owing to discrete single sources in the array, variation in power intensity can usually be detected as the receiving end moves. Although uniform illumination in lighting system has been widely investigated, its implemented light sources are commonly LEDs with Lambertian distribution. We further study an optical design applied for optical wireless communication system with VCSEL in this article. The optical system mainly consists of collimating lens and micro lens array to homogenize power intensity of the communication system based on VCSEL array source which has a Gaussian distribution. Our proposed scheme was verified with commercial optical design software Zemax. The simulation result shows that illumination uniformity can reach up to 91% after passing through this optical system, which can fulfill the requirements of high power uniformity in practical applications. The homogenization of power intensity solves the issue of signal power variation at the moving receiver end in optical wireless communication system, which guarantees stable communication link and robust system performance.

Abstract:In this paper, vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) array is used to establish gigabitssecond (Gbps) optical uplink, device-to-device (D2D), and Internet-of-thing (IoT) links, as a supplementary for visible light communication (VLC) and ultra-low latency near-field communication in a typical indoor scenario. The mathematical model based on a modified Monte-Carlo ray-tracing (MMCR) algorithm for VCSEL-based optical wireless communication (OWC) is presented, which takes into account both accuracy and time complexity for the calculation of the channel characteristics including power distribution, impulse response, error analysis, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Simulation firstly takes a global approach to the optical uplink lens design method, compared between Lambertian and Gaussian sources, and then extended six typical line-of-sight (LOS) or non-line-of-sight (NLOS) VCSEL-based OWC models. For demonstration, we adopted a 940-nm VCSEL array and 850-nm single-pixel VCSEL to establish LOS and NLOS systems after measuring the optics-electronics and bandwidth characteristics, respectively. Furthermore, multiple multi-carrier schemes are adopted to improve the OWC performance system based on a 940-nm VCSEL array including uniform-loading orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), channel-coded OFDM, bit-loading power-allocation OFDM, and OFDM access (OFDMA). Results show that OFDM can effectively decrease the inter-symbol interference (ISI) of the indoor channel and increase the data rate, and the bit power-loading method achieves the highest 7.2 Gbps transmission with the bit error rate (BER) within the forward error correction (FEC). All the theoretical and experimental results, for the first time, provide a comprehensive design and optimizing process of VCSEL-based indoor high-capacity OWC systems for future optical uplink, D2D, and IoT applications.

Abstract:Visible-light communication (VLC) will be deployed in various indoor environments, including those requiring different lighting colors, which imposes the needs for transmission optimization under certain lighting constraints. This work establishes a framework for the transmission power and rate optimization, for light emitting diode (LED)-based VLC systems. We describe the system model of LED-based color-division VLC system, which incorporates the transmission power spectral, the receiving optical filters, the human eye perception, and the lighting constraints. Then we formulate the corresponding power and rate optimization problems, for both point-to-point communication system and broadcast communication system. More specifically, for a point-to-point communication system, it maximizes the transmission rate subject to the transmission power constraint and the lighting constraint; and for a broadcast system, it minimizes the total transmission power subject to some quality of service (QoS) constraint across all receivers. It is observed that the optimal symbol modulation power allocation scheme significantly outperforms the equal power allocation scheme.

Abstract:The development of high-speed and high-brightness vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs), which can serve as an efficient light source for optical wireless communication (OWC), play a crucial role in growth of the next generation of wireless communication networks, e.g., 6 G and satellite communications. In this work, by optimizing the size of the Zn-diffusion and oxide-relief apertures in a high-speed 850 nm VCSEL, we obtain record-high brightness (2.9 MW<inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">${\mathrm {cm}}^{-2}{\mathrm {sr}}^{-1}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> at 10 mW output) with single polarized and (quasi-) single-mode (SM) outputs under continuous wave (CW) operation. However, such high brightness output comes at the cost of spatial hole burning (SHB) effect and degraded quality of 25 Gbit/sec eye patterns. In addition, an SM VSCEL array structure is usually needed to further boost the total available optical power for long-reach OWC. Here, a novel (quasi-) SM VCSEL array structure is demonstrated which releases the trade-off between the performances of brightness and eye-pattern quality. Our demonstrated array has a special crisscross mesa connecting neighboring VCSEL units and an extra electroplated copper substrate integrated on the backside of the chip. Compared to the reference array without the copper substrate and connected active mesas, the demonstrated array exhibits a higher (quasi-) SM output power, narrower divergence angle, larger orthogonal polarization mode suppression ratio (OPSR), and flatter E-O response. This in turn leads to smaller jitter and less noise in the measured 12.5 Gbit/sec eye-patterns. The demonstrated <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$7\times 7$ </tex-math></inline-formula> array exhibits a maximum SM power of around 90 mW with a 1/<inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\text{e}^{2}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> divergence angle as narrow as 7<sup>o</sup> (FWHM: 5<sup>o</sup>), single polarized output (10 dB OPSR), decent relative intensity noise performance (<−130 dB/Hz) and clear 12.5 Gbit/sec eye-opening. Such new device with remarkable static/dynamic performances has strong potential to further improve the product of the linking distance and data rate in the next generation of OWC channels.

Abstract:In this paper, the problem of power allocation is investigated for downlink visible light communication (VLC) systems with non-orthogonal multiple access. In the system, both input-dependent shot noise and input-independent Gaussian noise are considered due to the properties of practical VLC channels. We consider two scenarios for the transmitter with a single light emitting diode (LED) and multiple LEDs, respectively. For single-LED scenarios, the problem is posed as a joint optimization problem of alternating current and direct current power control, whose goal is to maximize the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) of all users. Although the original problem is non-convex, a geometric programming based algorithm is proposed to acquire the global optimal solution. For multi-LED scenarios, the transmit and dimming beamforming vectors are jointly optimized to maximize the minimum SINR of all users. A joint optimization algorithm that alternately optimizes transmit and dimming beamforming vectors is proposed. Particularly, the transmit beamforming problem is converted into a second-order cone programming problem through the successive convex approximation method. The dimming beamforming problem is transformed into a feasibility problem utilizing a low-complexity bisection algorithm. Numerical results reveal the superior performance of the proposed algorithm compared with its orthogonal multiple access counterpart and conventional schemes without shot noise.

Abstract:Light-emitting diode (LED) large-scale uniform rectangular illumination has a wide range of applications and is usually created by an irradiance superposition scheme. Abandoning the traditional method, we propose an approach to generate this illumination mode and enhance efficiency. With this method, an independent rectangular irradiance distribution is generated by each LED lens unit, and the large-scale illumination is obtained by arraying the irradiance distribution. Two slim direct-lit LED backlightings with a distance-height ratio of 3 were designed. An optical performance with irradiance nonuniformity less than 0.0228 and efficiency greater than 96% were obtained. Compared with the traditional methods, the efficiency is significantly enhanced and the number of the LED units is dramatically reduced by this new method. (c) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:High-capacity transmission laser is essential for increasing information transmission and improving digital applications. The future high-capacity, short-reach data-communication links require 850 nm vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) in virtue of such benefits as low threshold current, high modulation bandwidth, good circular beam quality, cost-effective fabrication, and low power consumption. In this paper, top-emitting, high-speed, oxide-confined 850 nm VCSELs were designed, fabricated, and characterized. Compared with the traditional GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well (QW) structure, we illustrated the differential gain coefficient increased with optimized InGaAs/AlGaAsQWfrom the simulation results of Cross-light software; Micro-cavity structure consisting of a modulation-gradients distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) is designed and optimized; then the influences on threshold current and differential resistance of oxide-aperture were investigated; Finally, voltage and output power against bias current, spot, and beam divergence angles were measured and analyzed.

Abstract:In indoor visible light communication, a rational layout of light sources is required to ensure that multiple users at different locations in the room can obtain better communication quality and achieve uniform coverage of optical power on the receiving surface. The article investigates the performance of an indoor visible light communication system when the random layout of the Matern hardcore point process is used and compares it with the communication performance under the Poisson point process and the binomial point process. A particle swarm optimization algorithm is introduced based on the Matern hardcore point process, where the points generated under the Matern hardcore point process are used as the initial positions of the particles, and optimization adjustments are made according to the objective function to find the optimal layout. The results show that compared with the Poisson point process and the binomial point process, the use of the Matern hardcore point process to randomly lay out the LEDs makes the light intensity in the system more uniform and the numerical fluctuation of the received power is smaller. The uniformity of the indoor illumination after the combination of the Matern hardcore point process and the particle swarm optimization algorithm reaches 0.84, the deviation of the peak power is reduced by 20%, and the average signal-to-noise ratio value is 0.86, which is an increase in the average signal-to-noise ratio compared to the average signal-to-noise ratio before optimization.

Abstract:In many applications, the emitting light from light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with different colors needs to be mixed together on a large-scale plane, and this illumination mode is usually generated with a diffuser. Abandoning the traditional methods, we proposed an LED color-mixing method that can produce both high color uniformity and irradiance uniformity illumination. This method is composed of two main aspects: arrangement of the irradiance array and design of the LED lens. With this method, an independent rectangular irradiance distribution is generated by each lens unit, and the large-scale color uniform illumination is obtained by arraying the irradiance distribution. A 3 x 3 array of LED module units consisting of 36 LED lens units with four different colors is designed, and a desired result with high color uniformity is obtained. Abstract:Diffuse communication plays a more significant role than the usual point-to-point scenario in indoor optical wireless communication (OWC). We present, for the first time to our knowledge, a Monte Carlo simulation and experiment for a 922.39-nm vertical cavity surface-emitting laser array-based non-line-of-sight OWC system with three common reflective materials. The power distribution at the receiver of different reflectors is consistent with the numerical results, proving the validity by separating each reflection into specular and diffuse components. For gigabit Ethernet, all proposed diffuse systems can achieve around 1-GHz bandwidths, and more than 1.25-Gbps data rates over 1-m transmission distance with wide communication coverage. In addition, plastic film and iron plate diffused systems can achieve 2.125-Gbps data rates.

Abstract:Due to limited interference range, the advantage of visible light communication (VLC) over wireless fidelity (WiFi) lies more in the unit-area transmission rate rather than the single-link transmission rate. To characterize the achievable transmission rate per unit area, we consider an indoor downlink VLC network with dense attocell configuration for the transmitters with single-color light-emitting diode (LED) and multi-color LEDs, assuming binomial distributed users. We divide each attocell into central region and boundary region, and propose the transmission protocols based on such attocell division. We optimize the LED half-power angle to maximize the mean achievable transmission rate per unit area. More specifically, we investigate the rates of cell-center and cell-boundary users under fairness consideration for the single LED transmitter system. We characterize the mean achievable transmission rate per unit area under the white light constraints in the multiple LEDs transmitter system. The performance of the proposed transmission protocols is evaluated by numerical results.

Abstract:We built a full-duplex high-speed optical wireless communication (OWC) system based on high-bandwidth micro-size devices, for which micro-LED and VCSEL arrays are implemented to establish downlink and uplink, respectively. The high-capacity downlink based on a single-pixel quantum dot (QD) micro-LED can reach a data rate of 2.74 Gbps with adaptive orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). VCSEL-based line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) uplinks are designed with lens-free receiving functions for a 2.2-m communication distance. Experimental results have been demonstrated and confirmed that both downlink and uplinks are capable of providing sufficient bandwidth for a multi-gigabit OWC. Besides, the lens-free uplink receiver can alleviate requirements for aligning and improve the mobility of the transmitter. The VCSELs implemented for both systems work with low driving currents of 140-mA and 190-mA under consideration of the human eye safety. For non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK), both uplinks can achieve 2.125 Gbps with bit-error-rate (BER) lower than the forward error correction (FEC) threshold of 3.8×10-3 for Ethernet access.

Abstract:Vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) based short reach optical solutions are widely deployed in the applications with the aggregated data rate from 10 Gb/s to 400 Gb/s and transmission distance less than 100m. Even with the great advantages of power consumption and cost, 100 Gb/s per lane multimode interconnect is still at stake due to the great challenges imposed by VCSEL design and multimode transmission. Besides the bandwidth challenge, co-design of VCSEL and electrical driver in both circuit and packaging level become significantly important with electrical and photonic chips getting close in a co-package form factor. In this paper, we will establish the theory on the VCSEL modeling and propose a comprehensive electro-optical co-design framework for power-efficient high-speed VCSEL transmitter targeting at 50 Gbaud. Bandwidth enhancement based on photon-photon resonance is also investigated with VCSELs injection locked by an optical frequency comb.

Abstract:In this letter, we experimentally proposed a highspeed long-distance uplink optical wireless communication (OWC) system based on a commercial 940-nm VCSEL for the first time. To the best of our knowledge, the system can reach a record-high data rate of 4.81 Gbps over 12-m transmission with a BER lower than the FEC floor of 3.8 x 10(-3) among existing commercial VCSEL based long-distance OWC systems. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) with adaptive bit-power- loading scheme is applied to improve the performance. We also built an mathematically equivalent model over 1.3 m to facilitate setting up optical link, reducing impact of link variation, and analyzing effect of link misalignment for a relatively long distance. Based on experimental and theoretical results, we presented a closed-form expression of the data rates versus the receiver offset distance by curve fitting. Newly calculated results differ from the actual measurements by no more than 4%, which demonstrates the validity of this empirical evaluation model of link misalignment.

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel approach to optimize energy efficiency in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) Visible Light Communication (VLC) systems designed for indoor broadcasting networks. A physics-based LED model is integrated into system energy efficiency optimization, enabling quantitative analysis of the critical issue of VLC energy efficiency: the nonlinear interplay between illumination and communication performance. The optimization jointly incorporates constraints on communication quality of each channel, and illumination performance, standardized by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE). The formulated nonlinear optimization problem is solved by the Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) algorithm in an experiment-based simulation. An integrated Red-Green-Blue-Yellow Light Emitting Diode (RGBY-LED) is measured for model calibration and three different scenarios are simulated to evaluate the generality of the proposed method. Results demonstrate a double enhancement in performance and a high versatility in accommodating various scenarios. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of balancing communication and illumination imperatives in VLC systems, challenging conventional perceptions focused solely on minimizing power consumption.

We tested the diodes without narrowly filtering the injecting comb and the VCSELs are able to sustain the injecting power.
