Abstract:An ultra-high sensitive distributed microstructured optical fiber (DMOF) acoustic sensor based on coherent OTDR demodulation method and hollow cylinder transducer is presented. As a consecutive longitudinal microstructured optical fiber, the DMOF contains backscattering enhanced points which greatly improved the signal to noise ratio(SNR) of the acoustic sensing signal. Based on coherent OTDR demodulation method, the amount of phase change caused by sound pressure can be directly obtained. In order to increase the phase sensitivity, sensing fiber between two backscattering enhanced points along the DMOF is wrapped on a hollow cylinder transducer as an acoustic sensing unit. Finally, experiments on detecting sound waves in air are carried out. The results demonstrate that our fiber acoustic sensor has a flat sensitivity frequency response from 500Hz to 5kHz with a phase sensitivity of around -112dB(re rad/μPa) and a peak sensitivity of -83.7dB at 80Hz. It is noteworthy that the sensing mechanism based on the DMOF can be further extended to distributed acoustic sensing.

Abstract:Quasi-distributed acoustic sensing (Q-DAS) based on ultra-weak fiber Bragg grating (UWFBG) is currently attracting great attention, due to its high sensitivity and excellent multiplexing capability. Phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) based on phase demodulation is one of the most promising interrogation schemes for Q-DAS. In this article, a novel interleaved identical chirped pulse (IICP) approach is proposed on the basis of pulse compression Φ-OTDR with coherent detection. Different from the frequency-division-multiplexing (FDM) method, the identical pulses are used for multiplexing in the IICP scheme, and the mixed reflection signals can be demodulated directly, so the inconsistent phase offsets in FDM can be avoided. As a result, this scheme can enlarge the measurement slew-rate (SR) of Q-DAS by times compared with traditional single pulse scheme. In the proof-of-principle experiment, the SR of 28.9 mɛ/s has been achieved with an 860 m sensing range, which is 5 times as that of the traditional single pulse scheme; meanwhile, the response bandwidth has been enlarged by 5 times. The 277 kHz response bandwidth has been achieved, with 5 m spatial resolution and 2.8 pε/Hz strain sensitivity.

Abstract:This paper proposes a distributed acoustic sensor (DAS) scheme, which is immune to the fading problem and can overcome the trade-off existing in traditional ϕ-OTDR between spatial resolution and sensing distance. An optical chirped pulse and non-matched filter method are used, and hence the spatial resolution is mainly determined by the bandwidth of the chirped pulse and non-matched ratio, rather than pulse duration. The Rayleigh interference pattern method is adopted here to quantitatively demodulate strain distribution along the whole sensing fiber, so there is no fading problem, which is a serious problem in the Rayleigh phase method. In proof-of-concept experiments, a DAS with 2-m spatial resolution and 10-km distance range is demonstrated. The response bandwidth of strain is 5 kHz, only limited by the fiber length. A nε-scale strain signal is detected at the far end of fiber with a high SNR of 35 dB.

Abstract:As an important branch of phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry ( $\Phi $ -OTDR), quasi-distributed acoustic sensing (QDAS) has attracted lots of attention due to its unique advantages. Varieties of scenarios require the capability of detecting signals in different frequency ranges. However, the influence of low-frequency noises limits the ability to sense low-frequency perturbations; sensing bandwidth is limited by the round-trip repetition in the QDAS system. In this article, a high performance QDAS scheme based on orthogonal codes and empirical mode decomposition (EMD) algorithm is proposed. EMD is utilized to extract and eliminate the low-frequency noises including frequency drift of laser, realizing sensing signals at the level of Hz. Importantly, to break the trade-off, massive orthogonal codes on the same carrier (OCSC) are generated and used to multiplex sensing channels, resulting in a significant enhancement in spectral efficiency. In addition, as a kind of optical pulse coding (OPC), OCSC can improve the signal to noise ratio (SNR) for long-distance sensing requirement without sacrificing spatial resolution. As a result, the influence of low-frequency noises is first eliminated in OPC QDAS system, and the sensing bandwidth is enlarged by 20 times compared with conventional single-pulse interrogation scheme. The frequency-band detection range of 1 Hz–10 kHz is realized at the far end of 99.4 km fiber, without consuming extra frequency-domain resources and distributed amplification; the noise level is about $33 {p}\varepsilon /\sqrt {\text {Hz}}$ in the range of 20 Hz-10 kHz, with 10 m spatial resolution.

Abstract:Phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (phi-OTDR) based on coherent detection is one of the most widely used schemes to achieve fiber distributed acoustic sensing. In previous studies, a fairly high data acquisition speed is essential for the phase-measuring coherent (phi-OTDR, thus leading to a severe computational burden. In this Letter, we first analyze the power spectra= of the beat signal and then propose the use of undersampling theory to reduce the need for high sampling frequency. Then we give the principle of selecting the matched sampling frequency and bandpass filter bandwidth so that the beat signal can be sampled without aliasing. The experimental results show that, when the central frequency of the beat signal is 200 MHz, its phase signal can be correctly demodulated even using a sampling rate as low as 71 MSa/s. This method can be extended to all existing coherent phi-OTDR systems with no or only a few modifications on them. (C) 2019 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Distributed acoustic sensing technology has a wide range of applications such as seismology, mineral exploration, and so on. For practical application needs, we contributed to increase demodulation rate of optical fiber distribution acoustic sensing system. Aiming at the problem of large volume of signal acquisition data and long demodulation time, we proposed to apply a hardware circuit as a part of data acquisition system. We also applied a GPU-based fast processing algorithm to realize simultaneous calculation of different units. Through the combination of hardware and software, the fast signal demodulation based on low sampling rate was successfully realized.

Abstract:The last years have witnessed the wide application of Distributed Acoustic Sensor (DAS) systems in several fields, such as submarine cable monitoring, seismic wave detection, structural health monitoring, etc. Due to their distributed measurement ability and high sensitivity, DAS systems can be employed as a promising tool for the phase sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR). However, it is also well-known that the traditional Φ-OTDR system suffers from Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) fading effects, which induce dead zones in the measurement results. Worse still, in practice it is difficult to achieve the optimum matching between spatial resolution (SR) and signal to noise ratio (SNR). Further, the overall frequency response range (FRR) of the traditional Φ-OTDR is commonly limited by the length of the fiber in order to prevent RBS signals from overlapping with each other. Additionally, it is usually difficult to reconstruct high frequency vibration signals accurately for long range monitoring. Aiming at solving these problems, we introduce frequency division multiplexing (FDM) that makes it easier to improve the system performance with less system structure changes. We propose several novel Φ-OTDR schemes based on Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM) technology to solve the above problems. Experimental results showed that the distortion induced by fading effects could be suppressed to 1.26%; when the SR of Φ-OTDR is consistent with the length of the vibration region, the SNR of the sensing system is improved by 3 dB compared to the average SNR with different SRs; vibration frequencies up to 440 kHz have been detected along 330 m artificial microstructures. Thus, the proposed sensing system offers a promising solution for the performance enhancement of DAS systems that could achieve high SNR, broadband FRR and dead zone-free measurements at the same time.

Abstract:Rayleigh scattering-based distributed optical fiber sensors with long sensing distance and large dynamic range are highly desired for application scenarios such as vehicle tracking, structure health monitoring, and geological survey. To enlarge the dynamic range, we propose a coherent optical time domain reflectometry (COTDR) based on double-sideband linear frequency modulation (LFM) pulse. By utilizing I/Q demodulation, both the positive and negative frequency band of the Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) signal can be properly demodulated. Consequently, the dynamic range is doubled without increasing the bandwidth of signal generator, photodetector (PD), and oscilloscope. In the experiment, the chirped pulse with 10 μs pulse width and 498 MHz frequency sweeping range is launched into the sensing fiber. Single-shot strain measurement is achieved over 5 km single-mode fiber with a spatial resolution of 2.5 m and a strain sensitivity of 7.5 pε/<i>H</i> <i>z</i>. A vibration signal with 3.09 με peak-to-peak amplitude (corresponding to 461 MHz frequency shift) is successfully measured with the double-sideband spectrum, which cannot be properly recovered with the single-sideband spectrum.

High-fidelity distributed fiber-optic acoustic sensor with fading noise suppressed and sub-meter spatial resolution

Abstract:In order to solve fading problem and realize sub-meter spatial resolution in DAS, this paper proposes a novel configuration of time-gated digital optical frequency domain reflectometry (TGD-OFDR) based on optical intensity modulator (IM). IM has a large modulation bandwidth and the positive and negative harmonics can be fully used to suppress fading while the spatial resolution remains unchanged. In experiments, with fading suppressed, the spatial resolution of DAS is 0.8 m and the strain resolution is about 245.6 pε√Hz along the total 9.8-km sensing fiber. The response bandwidth of vibration is 5 kHz, only/limited by the fiber length.

Abstract:To capture vibration waveforms whose frequencies exceed the limitation set by sensing fiber length in OTDR distributed vibration sensing (DVS), we propose a sampling rate enhancement technique based on frequency-division-multiplexing (FDM). Our proposal, unlike conventional FDM-based sampling rate enhancement methods, directly eliminates inherent distortion by using complementary frequency concept with new probe pulse sequence. The proposed method can suppress the distortion of arbitrary waveforms in regular fiber without prior knowledge of the vibration. The proposal can accurately measure vibration waveforms and fully characterize the vibration on a standard single-mode fiber; it determines not only the frequency but also the correct amplitude and the exact shape of the vibration. Furthermore, our distortion compensation scheme incorporates a state-of-the-art FDM-based fading suppression technique, yielding high sampling rates and high sensitivity simultaneously. We demonstrate the validity of the proposal by proof-of-concept experiments in which the number of multiplexed frequencies is set to three for both sampling rate enhancement and fading suppression. In creating the experimental setup, we take the great care with the optical pulse shape and the carrier frequencies to avoid crosstalk. We successfully measure vibration waveforms with frequencies ranging from 1 kHz to 9 kHz on a sensing fiber with length of about 12 km.

Abstract:Distributed optical fiber sensing exploring forward stimulated Brillouin scattering（FSBS） has received wide attention, as it indicates a new sensing method to measure the liquid property surrounding an optical fiber. In the existing techniques, backward stimulated Brillouin scattering is adopted for detection of the sensing signal, which requires time-consuming signal acquisition and post-processing. In this work, an approach that distributedly measures FSBS spectra is proposed and demonstrated based on coherent detection. While an excitation pulse with single-frequency amplitude modulation is used to induce a guided acoustic mode in the fiber, a following pulse is adopted to probe the induced phase modulation. Using a chirped fiber Bragg grating array, an enhancedbackward-propagating sensing signal is generated from the probe pulse. Heterodyne coherent-detection-based phase demodulation is then realized by mixing the sensing signal with a local oscillator. The FSBS spectra can then be reconstructed from the beat signals with only one round of frequency sweeping. With significantly accelerated signal acquisition and simplified post-processing, the proposed distributed acoustic sensing system has achieved spatial resolution of 5 m over a 500-m sensing range.

Abstract:Phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) based on heterodyne detection is widely used for its simple structure and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). However, the large amount of raw data of Φ-OTDR places a heavy burden on the storage device and also limits the transferability of the data. In this Letter, we propose an ultra-low sampling resolution technique to solve the data storage problem in heterodyne Φ-OTDR. Experimental results show that the optical phase variations induced by external vibrations can be successfully demodulated from the 1-bit-resolution raw data, and a vibration SNR of 58.03 dB is achieved. In addition, this work also reveals that a data acquisition device with extremely low sampling resolution is sufficient for heterodyne Φ-OTDR, signifying that the cost of the system can be further decreased.

Abstract:In the domain of optical fiber distributed acoustic sensing, the persistent challenge of extending sensing distances while concurrently improving spatial resolution and frequency response range has been a complex endeavor. The amalgamation of pulse compression and frequency division multiplexing methodologies has provided certain advantages. Nevertheless, this approach is accompanied by the drawback of significant bandwidth utilization and amplified hardware investments. This study introduces an innovative distributed optical fiber acoustic sensing system aimed at optimizing the efficient utilization of spectral resources by combining compressed pulses and frequency division multiplexing. The system continuously injects non-linear frequency modulation detection pulses spanning various frequency ranges. The incorporation of non-uniform frequency division multiplexing augments the vibration frequency response spectrum. Additionally, nonlinear frequency modulation adeptly reduces crosstalk and enhances sidelobe suppression, all while maintaining a favorable signal-to-noise ratio. Consequently, this methodology substantially advances the spatial resolution of the sensing system. Experimental validation encompassed the multiplexing of eight frequencies within a 120 MHz bandwidth. The results illustrate a spatial resolution of approximately 5 m and an expanded frequency response range extending from 1 to 20 kHz across a 16.3 km optical fiber. This achievement not only enhances spectral resource utilization but also reduces hardware costs, making the system even more suitable for practical engineering applications.

Abstract:A differential phase extracting method based on self-copy-shift for distributed acoustic sensing is proposed.Heterodyne and optical hybrids are used to realize high signal-to-noise ratio in-phase and quadrature-phase(IQ) signal measurement. The measured signals are self-copied and shifted for certain data points, and then they are digitally mixed with the original signals to construct the differential phase. The four produced signals are then combined to carry out IQ demodulation. An experiment with strain having an amplitude modulation waveform is carried out. The results showed that waveform information can be recovered well, and the signal-tonoise ratio achieves 32.8 dB.

Abstract:Distributed acoustic sensing based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) has been widely used in many fields. Phase demodulation of the Φ-OTDR signal is essential for undistorted acoustic measurement. Digital coherent detection is a universal method to implement phase demodulation, but it may cause severe computational burden. In this paper, analog I/Q demodulation is introduced into the Φ-OTDR based DAS system to solve this problem, which can directly obtain the I and Q components of the beat signal without any digital processing, meaning that the computational cost can be sharply reduced. Besides, the sampling frequency of the data acquisition card can theoretically be lower than the beat frequency as the spectrum aliasing would not affect the demodulation results, thus further reducing the data volume of the system. Experimental results show that the proposed DAS system can demodulate the phase signal with good linearity and wide frequency response range. It can also adequately recover the sound signal sensed by the optical fiber, indicating that it can be a promising solution for computational-cost-sensitive distributed acoustic sensing applications.

Abstract:By continuously injecting four groups of heterogeneous frequency dual pulses into the sensing fiber with weak fiber Bragg gratings (WFBGs), a quasi-distributed acoustic sensing method based on frequency-division multiplexing is proposed. Each group of pulses generates interference signals with different carrier frequencies after being reflected by the WFBGs. Through the discrete Fourier transform phase demodulation method, each carrier frequency interference signal is demodulated and then the phase is spliced. The feasibility of this method is theoretically analyzed, and a detection with a bandwidth of 2 kHz is realized on a 70 km sensing fiber with a spatial resolution of 10 m.

Abstract:The utilization of distributed fiber-optic sensing systems has become prevalent in monitoring both static parameters such as temperature or strain, and dynamic parameters like vibration. In order to measure multi-parameters simultaneously, we combine Rayleigh scattering and Brillouin scattering in a single sensing system. The time-gated digital optical frequency domain reflectometry is employed for vibration sensing and the Rayleigh backscattering of linear frequency modulation pulse is used as the probe of BOTDA for temperature sensing. The multi-frequency probe enables a non-step-scanning single-end BOTDA system. To simplify the hybrid system, we employ an intensity modulator for frequency modulation and pulse generation, replacing acousto-optic modulators. Both the positive and negative sidebands are received and modulated for demarcating static and dynamic parameters. This simplified system achieves sub-meter spatial resolution for vibration within a 12-km sensing range and offers a temperature measuring range of approximately 500 $^\circ \text{C}$, which is also non-step-scanning and immune to coherent fading.

Abstract:The frequency response of phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry ($\Phi $ -OTDR) is strictly limited by the repetition rate of the injected sampling pulses in conventional sensing scheme. To fully reconstruct an arbitrary vibration signal, the pulse repetition rate is required to be lower bounded by twice the maximum frequency of the vibration signal according to the Nyquist sampling theorem and at the same time upper bounded by the sensing fiber length to avoid generations of mixed Rayleigh backscattered signals from more than one optical pulse within the sensing fiber, making high-frequency vibration sensing over long distance impossible. In this work, we propose a novel method based on the serial multi-coset sampling (MCS) strategy which can recover sparse broadband vibration signals with sub-Nyquist sampling rates, which is thus able to break through the tradeoff between the measurable vibration frequency bandwidth and the sensing range. Pulses with non-uniform intervals are adopted to realize MCS for the Rayleigh backscattered lights along the entire sensing fiber rather than the traditional uniform pulse train. A continuous to finite (CTF) block is used to determine the active spectrum ranges of the sparse signal. By using a serial MCS sequence with an average sampling rate of 4.8 kHz, both a 4 kHz single-frequency sinusoidal signal and a 0.2 kHz bandwidth chirped signal with a center frequency of 4.6 kHz were sampled and recovered successfully in the simulation. In experiments, a single frequency vibration signal of 15 kHz and a chirped vibration signal with frequency ranging from 15 to 16 kHz were successfully identified and reconstructed over a sensing distance of 4 km using an average sampling rate of 21.6kHz, respectively, which however is not possible in conventional $\Phi $ -OTDR system. Furthermore, accurate identification of a broadband vibration signal with a maximum frequency of 6 kHz over a 10km-long sensing fiber shows that this method is also practically valid in long-distance sensing.
