Abstract:An ultrahigh frequency (UHF) band fractional-N frequency synthesizer with phase noise optimization technique was proposed and implemented,with an operating frequency of 0.8-1.6 GHz.The dead-zone elimination technique was adopted to reduce the noise influence induced by the phase frequency detector and charge pump on the system.The distributed varactor structure and second-order harmonic filtering technique were adopted in the voltage-controlled oscillator to achieve lower phase noise.The new type of notch filtering technique was adopted in the △-∑ modulator to further mitigate the inband phase noise and system spurs.The synthesizer was fabricated and verified in TSMC 180 nm CMOS process.The test results show that the proposed synthesizer achieves a maximum phase noise of-95,-127 and-146 dBc/Hz at 0.01,1 and 10 MHz offset,with the spurious suppression less than-81 dBc and the power dissipation of only 20 mW.The chip area is 2.5 mm×1.1 mm.

Abstract:A novel scheme of low-frequency intensity noise suppression of optical source is provided. A high speed variable optical attenuator (VOA) based on PLZT transparent optic ceramic is employed to instantly compensate the low-frequency power fluctuation of light source. Through constructing a feed-forward and feed-backward control loop system with high-speed optical power monitoring and electric driving, the suppression of low-frequency intensity noise of light source is achieved and the effect caused by the hysteresis of PLZT and the temperature dependent response of VOA can be avoided. Experiment result shows that with 2.1 μs signal delay of the control loop, the fluctuation amplitude can be suppressed down to a level of less than 1% in the frequency range of 0~800 Hz.

Abstract:In this paper,frequency stabilization of X-band OptoElectronic Oscillator (OEO) is obtained by phase locking to an Oven-Controlled Crystal Oscillator (OCXO) through a fractional Phase-Locked Loop (PLL).The relationship between the loop transfer characteristics of PLL and the phase noise of the oscillation is analyzed.The overall phase noise performance of the OEO is improved by Self-Injection-Locking (SIL) approach,where the phase noise of the OEO is suppressed for over 20 dB within frequency offsets from 10 Hz to 10 kHz.SIL OEO is phase locked with a 100 MHz OCXO.The phase noise of the PLL-locked SIL OEO is-55 dBc/Hz at 10 Hz offset and -124 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset and the frequency overlapping Allan DEViation (ADEV) reaches 1.14× 10-11 at an average time of 100 s,and this validates high frequency stability of the obtained output.

Abstract:The method of generating equal-amplitude spectral lines by multi-frequency phase modulation is used in stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) suppression. The spectra of three, five, seven, and eleven equal-amplitude spectral lines are obtained in experiment with flatnesses less than 0.3 dB. Theoretical research on SBS suppression shows that the threshold power after modulation is in reverse proportion to the maximum square of amplitude moduli of fundamental frequency and the nth harmonic wave. The threshold powers of three, five, seven, and eleven equal-amplitude spectral lines are improved by 5.21, 8.36, 9.39, and 10.76 dB, respectively.

Abstract:A phase adjustment technique employing optical spectrum processing is proposed to suppress the dispersion induced phase noise (PN) in optically generated millimeter-wave (MMW) and fiber transmission. A phase shift between the two beating optical tones in an optical MMW link is introduced by an optical spectrum processor (OSP) to compensate the phase mismatch between them, which results from fiber dispersion and deteriorates the PN of optically generated MMW signals. A MMW PN amelioration of 12.63 dB at 10 kHz offset and 11.23 dB at 100 kHz offset is achieved in a 40 GHz, 25 km optical MMW link thanks to this OSP.

Abstract:A novel scheme to implement the super-mode noise suppression for coupled optoelectronic oscillator (COED) utilizing an optoelectronic hybrid filter (OEF) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The OEF is made up of a multi-mode optoelectronic oscillator, incorporated in the COED loop to serve as a channelized RF filter, while the fiber laser in the COED can be viewed as another channelized RF filter of high Q. The cascading of the two equivalent channelized RF filters can greatly improve the out-of-band rejection ratio of the combined filter and restrain the adjacent mismatched modes in the oscillating loop. In the experiment, a 9.955 GHz RF signal with the side mode suppression ratio of larger than 82.6 dB is obtained, and the super-mode noise spur at an offset frequency of 5.9 MHz is suppressed 15 dB to -145 dBc/Hz level compared with the conventional COED.

Abstract:An optically tunable frequency-doubling Brillouin optoelectronic-oscillator using a dual-electrode Mach-Zehnder modulator (DEMZM) is presented. To achieve frequency-doubling, the DEMZM is biased at the maximum transmission point and only one of its electrodes is driven by the oscillation signal, whose frequency is determined by the stimulated Brillouin scattering effect in a high nonlinear dispersion-shifted fiber. Frequency tunability is obtained by utilizing the wavelength-dependent Brillouin frequency shift. Frequency-doubling microwave signals from 18.38 to 18.74 GHz with large suppression of the fundamental frequency component are generated. The proposed approach features low cost and simple in structure.

Abstract:An electrically tunable frequency-doubling optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) with operation based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and phase modulation is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In this OEO configuration, the phase modulator in combination with an optical filter is employed to produce a frequency-doubling microwave signal, while the SBS effect provides the narrowband filtering and ensures the oscillation of the feedback driving signal at the fundamental frequency. By varying the Brillouin pump signal obtained from double-sideband-carrier-suppression modulation, the frequency tunability is realized. In our experiment, a continuous tunable frequency-doubling signal from 21.4 to 25 GHz is generated when the tuning signal applied to the intensity modulator is tuned from 200 MHz to 2 GHz.

Abstract:A novel method for high frequency microwave phase noise measurement by photonic microwave down-conversion based on an optoelectronic oscillator is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The measurement of single-sideband phase noise of the 10–12 GHz microwave signals under test are obtained. The phase noise floor of the measurement system is −140 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset.

Abstract:A highly sensitive demodulation approach of a vibration-induced phase shift based on a low-noise optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The vibration-induced optical phase variation is directly converted to the electrical oscillating signal of the OEO with carrier phase-shifted double-sideband (CPS-DSB) modulation, which is realized by cascading a dual-output Mach-Zehnder modulator (DOMZM) and a fiber interferometer. Theoretically, within a CPS-DSB modulated OEO, the minimum detectable optical phase shift is determined by the phase noise achievable, and the sensitivity of the optical phase shift demodulation no longer depends on its frequency. A proof-of-concept OEO oscillating at 100 MHz with ultralow phase noise is built for demonstration. The achieved minimum detectable optical phase shift is 0.58 mu rad / root Hz at 1 kHz and 0.21 mu rad / root Hz at 10 kHz, which are the best results ever reported, to the best of our knowledge. Abstract:A wideband tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on the deamplification of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A tunable single passband microwave photonic filter (MPF) utilizing phase modulation and SBS deamplification is used to realize the tunability of the OEO. Theoretical analysis of the MPF and phase noise performance of the OEO are presented. The frequency response of the MPF is determined by the + 1st sideband attenuation due to SBS deamplification and phase shift difference between the two sidebands due to chromatic dispersion and SBS. The close-in (< 1 MHz) phase noise of the proposed OEO is shown to be dominated by the laser frequency noise via phase shift of SBS. The conversion of the laser frequency noise to the close-in phase noise of the proposed OEO is effectively reduced compared with the OEO based on amplification by SBS. Tunable 7 to 40 GHz signals are experimentally obtained. The single-sideband (SSB) phase noise at 10 kHz offset is -128 dBc/Hz for 10.30 GHz signal. Compared with the OEO based on SBS amplification, the proposed OEO can achieve a phase noise performance improvement beyond 20 dB at 10 kHz offset. The maximum frequency and power drifts at 10.69 GHz are within 1 ppm and 1.4 dB during 1000 seconds, respectively. To achieve better close-in phase noise performance, lower frequency noise laser and higher pump power are preferred. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical models.
