Abstract:Operating deflection shapes (ODSs) are used for visualizing the vibration patterns of a structure. In this study, ODSs are applied to diagnose the mechanical condition of power transformer windings. First, a synchronous calibration measuring system is developed to simultaneously acquire tank vibration signals and excitation voltage signals. To perform the synchronous calibration, the phase of the excitation voltage signals is set as the reference. Next, the no-load test, load test, and variable load test are conducted on a 50-kVA transformer. The histogram of oriented gradient (HOG) and Pearson correlation coefficient (CC) are proposed to describe the differences between the different ODSs. Experimental results show that the ODSs are insensitive to the operating voltage and current, but sensitive to the clamping pressure of the windings. Field results further verify the significant change in the ODS after winding deformation. Finally, the partial ODS, which is suitable for practical transformers, is proposed to locate winding mechanical defects in power transformers. The proposed method can improve the efficiency and accuracy of the vibration-based mechanical condition monitoring of power transformers.

Abstract:The vibration signal of transformer's winding is correlative with the conditions of winding's compression and distortion, therefore, vibration monitor of transformer's winding is an effective method for on-line monitoring the power transformer delitescent faults. A new method of obtaining the energy distribution with time and frequency of transformer's winding vibration based on Hilbert-Huang Transform(HHT) was developed. Firstly, Empirical mode decomposition(EMD) separated the vibration series into a finite and small number of intrinsic mode functions(IMF).IMF was directly decomposed from vibration series and could reflect the intrinsic physical property of vibration series more clearly. Secondly, Hilbert transform was applied to every IMF. Then, three dimensional amplitude(energy)-frequency-time spectrum designated as Hilbert spectrum was got, where both amplitude and frequency are functions of time. Eliminating the spurious harmonics without physical mean, the Hilbert spectrum provided high-resolution time-frequency characteristics of winding's different work states. It is demonstrated by the test results that the new detection method is very useful in the fault diagnosis of transformer's winding.

Abstract:The measurement of the operating deflection shape (ODS) of power transmission belts is of great importance for the fault diagnosis and prognosis of industrial belt drive systems. This paper presents a novel method based on an electrostatic sensor array to measure the ODS of a belt moving both axially and transversely. The electrostatic sensor integrates a charge amplifier that converts the induced charge on a strip-shaped electrode into a voltage signal. Finite-element simulations are performed to study the sensing characteristics of the sensor and the results reveal that the sensor can respond to vibration displacement. Construction of the ODS is achieved in the frequency domain using the ODS frequency response function. Comparative experimental studies with a high-accuracy laser displacement sensor were conducted on a purpose-built test rig and the results show that the vibration frequencies and their relative magnitudes obtained from both sensors agree well with each other. Experiments conducted over a range of belt axial speeds show that the belt vibrates at frequencies that are well separated and identifiable using a peak picking method. The measured ODSs of the first three vibration modes illustrate that the vibration displacement is larger in the middle of the belt span than at both ends and that the phase shift relative to the reference sensor at each measurement point increases monotonically along the belt running direction. The belt axial speed determines the vibration frequencies and displacement, which reaches the maximum amplitude around the natural frequency of the belt.

Abstract:On the basis of analyzing and researching the principle of demodulation technique for FBG,a scheme of demodulation technique for FBG,which was based on cantilever tuning and the demodulation technique on a pair of matched FBG was designed.The relation between the wavelength shifts of sensing FBG and the wavelength shifts of reference FBG were studied,and each part of the system was designed.Stepping motor transformed the electricity pulse signal into angle-displacement or line-displacement's open-loop control part,in the non-overload situation,the electrical machinery rotational speed and the stopping position was only decided by the pulse signal's frequency and the pulse number,and was not influenced by the variation of load.This system has the characteristic of simply structure,high precision and low cost.

Abstract:To achieve omnidirectional sensitive detection of partial discharge (PD) in transformers and to avoid missing PD signals, a fiber optic omnidirectional sensing method for PD in transformers combined with the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and Fabry-Perot (F-P) cavity is proposed. The fiber optic omnidirectional sensor for PD as a triangular prism was developed. The hollow structure of the probe was used to insert a single-mode fiber to form an F-P cavity. In addition, the three sides of the probe were used to form a diaphragm-type FBG sensing structure. The ultrasound sensitization diaphragm was designed based on the frequency characteristics of PD in the transformer and the vibration model of the diaphragm in the liquid environment. The fiber optic sensing system for PD was built and the performance test was conducted. The results show that the resonant frequency of the FBG acoustic diaphragm is around 20 kHz and that of the F-P cavity acoustic diaphragm is 94 kHz. The sensitivity of the developed fiber optic sensor is higher than that of the piezoelectric transducer (PZT). The lower limit of PD detection is 68.72 pC for the FBG sensing part and 47.97 pC for the F-P cavity sensing part. The directional testing of the sensor and its testing within a transformer simulation model indicate that the proposed sensor achieves higher detection sensitivity of PD in all directions. The omnidirectional partial discharge ultrasound sensing method proposed in this paper is expected to reduce the missed detection rate of PD.

Abstract:This paper introduced a novel on-line transformer winding deformation monitoring technology. That is constructing the locus of the voltage difference on both sides of the transformer changes with the primary side current. Results show that the locus is an ellipse and we name it the transformer impedance circle character. Mathematical methods were applied to analyze the characteristics of the impedance circle, as well as the factors that influence the shape of it. Indicators such as eccentricity ratio and deviation angle, which is free from of running condition but sensitive to internal fault, were established to evaluate the state of winding. Indexes established in normal condition are determined as fingerprint. By comparing the variation in each cycle, the stuff can assess the state of the windings. This technique does not call for any special equipment and has clear judgment standard. Thus, it is possible to realize on-line monitoring. Finally, PSCAD simulation and dynamic simulation experiment verified the practicality and validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:Traditional monitoring methods cannot obtain the overall thermal information for power transformers. To solve this problem, a distributed fiber optic sensor (DFOS) was creatively applied inside an operating 35 kV power transformer by highly integrating with the electromagnetic wires. Then, the transformer prototype with totally global sensing capability was successfully developed and it was qualified for power grid application through the strict ex-factory tests. The as designed optical fiber sensor works stably all the time with a temperature accuracy of ±0.2 °C and spatial positioning accuracy of 0.8 m. Based on the obtained internal temperature distribution, Gaussian convolution was further applied for the signal processing and hereby, the hotspots for all the windings and iron cores could be accurately traced. The hottest points were located at 89.1% (55 °C) of the high voltage winding height and 89.7% (77.5 °C) of the low voltage winding height. The actual precise hotspot location corrected the traditional cognition on the transformer windings and it would serve as an essential reference for the manufactures. This new nondestructive internal sensing and condition monitoring method also exhibits a promising future for the DFOS applying in the high-voltage electrical apparatus industry.

Abstract:Oil-paper insulation bushing is one of the key components of power transformers, which has been subjected to high voltage, high current and strong mechanical load as well as the external complex environment for a long time during operation. So the insulation reliability of transformer bushings faces severe challenges and timely, effective evaluation of the insulation status of transformer bushing is of great significance. Frequency domain dielectric spectroscopy (FDS) is widely used in non-destructive evaluation of bushing insulation, which has the advantages of strong anti-interference ability and abundant insulation information. But the transformers need to be cut off from power system in traditional FDS test. In this paper, the simulation model of a 330kV substation was established to simulate the transient voltage generated at the bushing when noload lines, no-load transformers, capacitors and reactors were put in. The frequency components and amplitude characteristics of the transient voltage can meet the requirements of dielectric response test. Standard operation pulse with an amplitude of 50kV was applied to transformer bushings with different moisture content based on the extended Debye model, and the calculated FDS of the two bushings under transient voltage excitation is compared. Results show that the FDS under transient voltage excitation is expected to achieve online diagnosis of transformer bushing insulation.

Abstract:It is an important means for Partial discharge (PD) on-line monitoring of oil-immersed power transformers in order to evaluating the insulation condition. Radio frequency current transducers (RFCT) are applied to couple the PD pulse current signal, and the difference-balance pairs (one of three-phase bushing-tap grounding terminals respectively corresponded with the neutral or iron core terminal) are selected, and high speed data acquisition card is adopt to sample the PD signal (> 10MS/s) from the balance pair, and further amplitude modulation, phase modulation and difference arithmetic is designed, then external electromagnetic interference is effectively suppressed and it is propitious to extracting PD pulses and judge the PD occurrence place. The wideband PD couplers based on microstrip antenna are also applied to detect the high frequency PD pulse signal. Four sensors are installed at the special parts on the transformer where PD electromagnetic wave signal can be received, then the signal is transmitted to the input analog channel of the oscilloscope (> 1GS/s). So single PD waveform analysis throughout more wide frequency band can be done, and further PD fault location can also be realized. The PD on-line monitoring system based on the above two monitoring methods for in-service transformer has also been developed and installed at one main transformer in a Plant (220/18kV, 360MVA, three phase and dual winding).

Abstract:On-load Tap-changer (OLTC) is one of the significant components in power transformer. The breakdown of frequently switched OLTC may cause the cutoff of the corresponding in-service transformer. Hence, suitable indicators are needed for effectively monitoring the operation condition of OLTC. Although the vibration analysis method has been proven to be effective for the mechanical condition assessment of the OLTC, the diagnostic parameters are mostly submerged in the noises during the switch-over process of OLTC. To solve this problem, this paper presents a new methodology - resonance-based sparse signal decomposition (RSSD) - to extract the determining vibration signals' features for the monitoring of OLTC. The vibration signal is decomposed into high-resonance components, low-resonance components, and redundant components. The obtained fault characteristics are mainly contained in the high-resonance components, which can be used for the fault detection.

Abstract:Transformer undertakes the task of energy transmission and is widely used in power system. As one of the core state parameters, temperature determines the lifespan of transformer. Therefore, the realization of accurate on-line real-time temperature measurement is the assurance of a safe and stable power grid. Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) overcomes the defects of traditional temperature measuring methods, such as lack of measuring points and susceptibility to electromagnetic interference. FBG has the advantages of corrosion resistance, high sensitivity, small size and low cost, showing high research and application value. In this paper, the packaging of FBG is optimized firstly and a series of performance tests are carried out. Results show that FBG has good dynamic response characteristics and stability in the range of 30°C∼160°C. Moreover, the linearity of the fitting function is measured to be 0.999 and temperature coefficient is 11.9pm/°C, which meets the needs of temperature measuring. Secondly, a distributed FBG temperature sensing system based on Fabry-Perot demodulation is developed. The FBG system is successfully embedded in a 110kV power transformer to realize distributed online temperature monitoring of transformer oil and three-phase windings.

Abstract:The power transformer is one of the most critical core devices for energy exchange in power systems, and its safe and stable operation is directly related to the reliability of the power grid. Partial discharge is the main cause of insulation degradation and failure of high-voltage electrical equipment. Online monitoring and accurate localization of partial discharge can provide information on the aging of power equipment, which is of great value for improving the safe operation and maintenance of the power grid. Internal dual partial discharge in transformer windings is a more complex type of fault. Since it is located inside the windings, the signal is attenuated and distorted, making it difficult for traditional monitoring methods to capture such partial discharge signal The Fabry–Perot optical fiber sensor is an ultrasonic detection method that can be built into the transformer interior. This sensor has high sensitivity and a small size, enabling flexible placement at different locations inside the transformer for precise partial discharge detection. Especially for the narrow space inside the high and low voltage windings, F–P sensors can form an array, utilizing the array's directivity to locate the fault points. In this study, an ultrasonic detection system based on the F–P optical fiber sensor array was developed. The system utilizes a directional cross-localization algorithm based on the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm to accurately locate dual partial discharge sources. This partial discharge detection system was applied to a 35 kV single-phase transformer, enabling the localization of dual partial discharge sources within the high and low voltage windings. Combined with experimental results, this method exhibits high localization accuracy and is particularly suitable for detecting partial discharge phenomena that occur within or between transformer windings.

Abstract:Despite major progress in the design of power transformers, the Achilles' heel remains the insulation system, which is affected by various parameters including moisture, heat, and vibrations. These important machines require extreme reliability to guarantee electricity distribution to end users. In this contribution, a fiber optic sensor (FOS), consisting of a Fabry-Perot cavity made up of two identical fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), is proposed, to monitor the temperature and vibration of power transformer windings. A phase shifted gratings recoated sensor, with multilayers of polyimide films, is used to monitor the moisture content in oil. The feasibility is investigated using an experimental laboratory transformer model, especially fabricated for this application. The moisture contents are well correlated with those measured by a Karl Fisher titrator, while the values of temperature compare well with those recorded from thermocouples. It is also shown that the sensors can be used to concurrently detect vibration, as assessed by sensitivity to the loading current. The possibility of dynamically measuring humidity, vibrations, and temperatures right next to the winding, appears to be a new insight that was previously unavailable. This approach, with its triple ability, can help to reduce the required number of sensors and therefore simplify the wiring layout.

Abstract:The detection of On-Load Tap-Changer (OLTC) faults at an early stage plays a significant role in the maintenance of power transformers, which is the most strategic component of the power network substations. Among the OLTC fault detection methods, vibro-acoustic signal analysis is known as a performant approach with the ability to detect many faults of different types. Extracting the characteristic features from the measured vibro-acoustic signal envelopes is a promising approach to precisely diagnose OLTC faults. The present research work is focused on developing a methodology to detect, locate, and track changes in on-line monitored vibro-acoustic signal envelopes based on the main peaks extraction and Euclidean distance analysis. OLTC monitoring systems have been installed on power transformers in services which allowed the recording of a rich dataset of vibro-acoustic signal envelopes in real time. The proposed approach was applied on six different datasets and a detailed analysis is reported. The results demonstrate the capability of the proposed approach in recognizing, following, and localizing the faults that cause changes in the vibro-acoustic signal envelopes over time.

Online State Diagnosis of Transformer Windings Based on Time-Frequency Analysis

Abstract:The power transformers are the key equipments in the power system. To keep the stable operation of the transformers, it's necessary to get their state information on a real-time basis. Therefore, the efficient online monitoring system is developed which obtain the state of the transformers by the accelerometers attached on the tank. The locations of these accelerometers can be determined by the method of varying current with constant frequency. The vibration intensity change is used to initially detect the windings' state by online monitoring the vibration signal of the shocks. Then the time-frequency analysis further processes these signals in order to detect the fault information contained. The short-circuit experiments have been done on the large power transformer of 50000KVA, which finds that the time-frequency analysis can be used to more precisely detect the fault characteristics of windings. Compared with traditional off line short circuit reactance method, the time-frequency analysis is more effective.

Abstract:As the imbalance between power demand and load capacity in electrical systems becomes increasingly severe, investigating the temperature variations in transformers under different load stresses is crucial for ensuring their safe operation. The thermal analysis of converter transformers poses challenges due to the complexity of model construction. This paper develops a full-scale model of a converter transformer using a multi-core high-performance computer and explores its thermal state at 80%, 100%, and 120% loading ratios using the COUPLED iteration method. Additionally, to validate the simulation model, 24 FBGs are installed in the experimental transformer to record the temperature data. The results indicate a general upward trend in winding the temperature from bottom to top. However, an internal temperature rise followed by a decrease is observed within certain sections. Moreover, as the loading ratio increases, both the peak temperature and temperature differential of the transformer windings rise, reaching a peak temperature of 107.9 °C at a 120% loading ratio. The maximum discrepancy between the simulation and experimental results does not exceed 3.5%, providing effective guidance for the transformer design and operational maintenance.

Abstract:This paper proposes an approach based on the vibration phase difference between different measurement points to detect winding deformation in a transformer. The previous experiment investigated the relationship between the stability of the transformer system and the phase difference between the vibration signal of the transformer and the electrical input. However, obtaining the electrical input in field tests is difficult. Therefore, the vibration phase difference between measurement points is studied. Subsequently, a faulty-state indicator is proposed, which represents the variation in phase difference. To validate the proposed method, laboratory experiments are conducted on a 110 kV power transformer under short-circuit and unloaded conditions. In the experiments, winding deformation was introduced to the target transformer. The findings indicate that winding deformation can cause an increase in the variation of phase difference under different operating conditions. In summary, the proposed indicator can effectively evaluate mechanical condition of a winding.
The Fault Detection Of Transformer Windings' Deformation Based On Vibration Frequency Response Analysis

Abstract:Windings' deformation is one of the most common transformer faults. The paper proposes a new method of Vibration frequency response analysis (VFRA) in order to effectively detect the deformation. A series of experiments have been conducted on a large power transformer to validate its efficiency by testifying its repetitiveness and sensitivity. The first series of experiments used VFRA on phase A under the same status in different time. VFRA was used in the second series of experiments on phase C with purposely removing its insulation pressboard. The third used VFRA to test phase C with man-made radial deformation. All the first series of experimental results are nearly the same, which shows the good repetitiveness for this method. The second and third results with the artificial faults were compared with those in normal status, which shows that VFRA can effectively detect the windings' deformation. Compared with short-circuit reactance measurement, VFRA is more sensitive.

Abstract:This paper introduced the main point of three winding transformer impedance circle characters that is constructing the 3D locus between the voltage differences in the high-and low-(or middle-) sides of a particular phase against the currents of this two windings. In additional, error terms caused by exciting current of both two winding and three-winding transformer have been analyzed. Current compensation was employed to reduce error. A Matlab code was developed to calculate the feature parameter of the impedance circle character. Winding deformation can be diagnosed by comparing the index with the fingerprint. PSCAD simulation and fault recorder analysis results show that the technique is free from load, does not call for any special equipment and enable on-line monitoring.
