Abstract:A novel system structure of resonant fiber optical gyroscope using a parallel double hollow-core photonic crystal fiber ring resonator is proposed, which employs the double closed loop and reciprocal modulation–demodulation technique to solve the problem of the length mismatch between rings. This structure can suppress the residual amplitude modulation noise and laser frequency noise, essentially eliminating the influence of the Rayleigh backscattering noise and dramatically reduce the Kerr-effect-induced drift by three orders of magnitude. Thanks to its excellent noise suppression effect, the sensitivity of this novel system can approach the shot-noise-limited theoretical value of 8.94 × 10−7 rad/s assuming the length of the fiber ring resonator is 10 m.

Abstract:This paper provides a novel, to the best of our knowledge, method for suppressing backscattering noise of a resonant fiber optic gyroscope (RFOG) with a coherent detection technique. The light from the fiber ring resonator is mixed with a reference beam rather than being demodulated directly in traditional configurations, generating a coherent signal with a radio frequency. The central frequencies of the two reference lights used for the clockwise and counterclockwise waves are different to avoid the effect of backscattered waves. Besides, a common phase modulation is applied on the two counter-propagating waves to eliminate the parasitic effect due to the residual amplitude modulation in the phase modulator. Two demodulation schemes for the rotation rate detection from the coherent signals are then proposed and demonstrated, with performance on noise suppression tested. One is the beat-frequency demodulation, and the other is the self-mixing demodulation technique. The influence of backscattering intensity is reduced from 270°/h to 3°/h and 0.05°/h with the two demodulation techniques, respectively, showing a full suppression of backscattering noise.

Abstract:Resonator fiber optic gyro (R-FOG) is an inertial rotation sensor with high accuracy which is based on the Sagnac effect. The signal detection system has important role in the R-FOG. The detecting precision influences the maximum resolution of the gyro directly. The fiber ring resonator is the core-sensing element in the R-FOG. This paper presents the scheme to detect the resonance point using two-frequency serrodyne modulation, and uses the Lorentzian function to describe the expression of the output power at the exit port of the fiber ring resonator taking the temporal coherence of the laser into account. According to near linear relationship between amplitude of the square waveform and the resonant frequency deviation near the resonant point, frequency feedback time after time is used for frequency tracking for both clockwise (CW) and counterclockwise (CCW) waves. Therefore, complex root finding process can be avoided. Simulation shows that both CW and CCW waves can be locked at the resonance frequency of the resonator quickly by frequency feedback operation.

Abstract:A closed-loop digital detection system in resonant fiber gyro by two frequencies modulation based on DSP chip is proposed. In this system, the sinusoidal signal of its fundamental frequency is extracted from the output light intensity signal of the detector by use of band-pass filter. The noise is eliminated by using correlative detection principle. The DC component, proportional to the light intensity of detector output, is extracted by low-pass filter and converted into corresponding resonant frequency difference, and then the angle rotating speed of the gyroscope can be calculated based on such frequency difference. The detection circuit of this system is simple and the operation is convenient. The processing speed of this system has been greatly improved due to application of. DSP chip. Moreover, the optimization design for the filter parameters of the detection system is realized by Matlab software, thus improving the detection accuracy of the system.

Abstract:A detection system in the resonator fiber-optic gyro is set up by the phase modulation (PM) spectroscopy technique. The slope of the demodulated curve near the resonant point is found to affect the ultimate sensitivity of the gyro. To maximize the demodulated signal slope, the modulation frequency and index are optimized by the expansion of the Bessel function and optical field overlapping method. Using different PM frequencies for the light waves, the open-loop gyro output signal is observed. The modulation frequency in this PM technique is limited only by the cutoff frequency of the LiNbO3 phase modulators, which can reach several gigahertz. This detection technique and system can be applied to the resonator micro-optic gyro with a less than 10 cm long integrated optical ring.

Abstract:A digital detection technique based on the coordinate rotation digital computer (CORDIC) algorithm is proposed for a resonator fiber optic gyroscope (R-FOG). It makes the generation of modulation signal, synchronous demodulation and signal processing in R-FOG to be realized in a single field programmable gate array (FPGA). The frequency synthesis and synchronous detection techniques based on the CORDIC algorithm have been analyzed and designed firstly. The experimental results indicate that the precision of the detection circuit satisfies the requirements for the closed-loop feedback in R-FOG system. The frequency of the laser is locked to the resonance frequency of the fiber ring resonator stably and the open-loop gyro output signal is observed successfully. The dynamic range and the bias drift of the R-FOG are ±1.91 rad/s and 0.005 rad/s over 10 s, respectively.

Abstract:New developments are made in the resonant fiber optic gyro (RFOG), which is an optical sensor for the measurement of rotation rate. The digital signal processing system based on the phase modulation technique is capable of detecting the weak frequency difference induced by the Sagnac effect and suppressing the reciprocal noise in the circuit, which determines the detection sensitivity of the RFOG. A new technique based on the sinusoidal wave modulation and square wave demodulation is implemented, and the demodulation curve of the system is simulated and measured. Compared with the past technique using sinusoidal modulation and demodulation, it increases the slope of the demodulation curve by a factor of 1.56, improves the spectrum efficiency of the modulated signal, and reduces the occupancy of the field-programmable gate array resource. On the basis of this new phase modulation technique, the loop is successfully locked and achieves a short-term bias stability of 1.08°/h, which is improved by a factor of 1.47.

Abstract:Optical gyros are attractive angular rotation sensors based on the Sagnac effect. The phase modulation technique is adopted to detect the weak resonant frequency shift induced by the Sagnac effect, which determines the detection sensitivity of the gyros. The Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) modulation is a mature laser frequency stabilization technique that is widely recognized. A resonant optic gyro equipped with a short and high-finesse fiber ring resonator employing the high-frequency PDH modulation technique is proposed and demonstrated. The modulation index and frequency are optimized to maximize the slope of the demodulation curve. Compared with the low-frequency modulation, the high-frequency PDH modulation increases the slope of the demodulation curve by a factor of 1.23 and achieves an extra 15.8 dB of laser frequency noise suppression. The bias stability of the gyro output is improved from 9.6°/h to 8°/h, and the equivalent lock-in frequency accuracy increases 12 dB.

Abstract:Resonator fiber optic gyro(R-FOG) is a promising candidate for the next generation inertial rotation sensor.The signal detection system is very important in the R-FOG.The detection precision influences the ultimate resolution of the gyro directly.Optimization of the demodulation curve can enhance the detection resolution.Therefore,it has significance to optimize the demodulation curve.By the use of expansion of Bessel function and optical field overlapping method,the relation between the demodulation curve and the resonant frequency deviation was analyzed.According to the analytical expression of the demodulation curve in this phase modulation spectroscopy scheme,the changing rule for the curve was analyzed by the numerical method.Then optimized values for the modulation frequency and modulation index were obtained.The experiments verified the analytical results.

Abstract:The resonant fiber optic gyro (RFOG) based on reciprocal modulation-demodulation technique is introduced and the influence of high modulation frequency on resonance and demodulation output is analyzed. The expression of backscattering output in resonant cavity is deduced and the experimental device is built to measure the backscattering coefficient. The demodulation model considering backscattering noise is established under reciprocal sinusoidal modulation, and the optimal modulation parameters are obtained by simulation. Finally, the RFOG system is set up. The results show that the detection sensitivity is improved by 19% with the optimal modulation parameters and the system bias stability improves from 0.067°/s to 0.023°/s.

Abstract:Resonator fiber optic gyroscope has the potential to achieve the inertial navigation system requirement with a short sensing coil. An all digitalized system is constructed including the signal modulation/demodulation and a proportional integral (PI) controller in a single field programmable gate array. Under this scheme, the serrodyne phase modulation technique is adopted, which is of benefit to overcome the backscattering induced noise and easy to implement in closed-loop operation. The phase modulation index is optimized to achieve high carrier suppression. The PI controller is adopted in the frequency servo loop to eliminate the residual error at the lock-in frequency. A bias stability of 5.2×10-4 rad/s in 500 seconds is demonstrated experimentally.

Abstract:A resonant fiber-optic gyroscope (RFOG) based on a broadband source can avoid the fundamental drawback of coherence detection processing while possessing the greater sensitivity afforded by the finesse of the fiber-optic ring resonator. In this paper, the basic operation principle is presented and demonstrated in detail, and various noise sources, as well as the temperature effect encountered in this broadband source-driven RFOG, are studied and analyzed. Then a combined modulation technique is proposed to suppress the residual backscattering noise. To further reduce the effect of temperature transience, an asymmetric fiber ring resonator is designed. In the experiment, a bias stability of 0.01°/h is successfully demonstrated with a 100 m-long fiber ring resonator of 8 cm diameter in a laboratory environment without temperature control.

Abstract:The broadband source-driven resonant fiber-optic gyroscope (RFOG), as a new type of gyroscope, demonstrates impressive advantages in both detection sensitivity and long-term bias stability. To further improve the system performance, this paper investigates the factors affecting the detection sensitivity and long-term bias stability of the broadband source-driven RFOG. Two mathematical models are developed to analyze the relationship between the fiber-optic ring resonator (FRR) parameters and the detection sensitivity, as well as the error induced by imperfect modulation signals. The analysis shows that the detection sensitivity can be improved by optimizing the coupling coefficients of the FRR. Meanwhile, the bias error at the output of the gyroscope caused by imperfect modulation can be effectively suppressed by improving the harmonic suppression ratio of the modulation signal and compensating the phase difference between the first and second harmonics. Finally, after using the optimized FRR and suppressing the error due to imperfect modulation, the experimental results show that the bias stability is in the range of 1°/h to 450μ°/h for different cavity lengths.

Abstract:The resonant fiber optic gyro (RFOG) is a high accuracy inertial rotation sensor based on the Sagnac effect. The existence of various noises, including the nonreciprocal noises such as the polarization noise and the Kerr noise as well as the reciprocal circuit noise, limits the performance improvement of the RFOG. An improved scheme by inserting two in-line polarizers in the polarization maintaining fiber transmission-type resonator has been proposed to suppress the polarization-fluctuation induced drift. Furthermore, the adoption of the air-core photonic bandgap fibers (PBFs) offers a novel solution to reduce the optical Kerr effect. In addition, A digital signal processor is designed to reduce the reciprocal noises and detect the rotation information. A minimum actual rotation of 0.001°/s is achieved. The dynamic range is improved by a factor of 7 and the scale factor nonlinearity is decreased by a factor of 60.

Abstract:This paper provides a scheme for realizing high-accuracy, low-cost resonant fiber optical gyroscopes (RFOGs) with single-mode (SM) fibers. The temperature-related polarization noise, which deteriorates the bias stability of the RFOG, has been suppressed thanks to a much longer birefringence beat length of SM fibers. It is also helpful to improve the theoretical sensitivity of the RFOG because of the very low loss of the SM fiber components. A transmissive 39-m-long SM fiber ring resonator (FRR) is fabricated. The measured finesse is 58.7, and its total loss is calculated to be less than 0.3 dB. Using this SM-FRR as the sensing element, an RFOG is then set up that achieves an angular random walk of 0.0039∘/√h and a bias stability of 0.05°/h. The experimental results show that the SM-FRR scheme would be a good candidate for producing high-accuracy and low-cost RFOGs.

Abstract:As the second generation of the fiber-optic gyro (FOG), a resonant FOG (RFOG) appears as a very viable candidate for a miniaturized optical gyro. However, due to the impediment of laser-induced parasitic noise and system complexity, the actual performance of the RFOG is well below expectations. This paper proposes a novel, to the best of our knowledge, RFOG which is driven by broadband white light rather than a narrow linewidth laser. The fiber-optic ring resonator (FRR) works as a filter, and the rotation under detection is read out from the round trip loss of the FRR. The parasitic noise is effectively avoided due to the low coherence light, and the measuring resolution can be thus improved. In the experiment, a bias instability of 0.012 ∘/h is demonstrated with a 100-m fiber coil and a very simple structure. The proposed method would be a big step forward for making the RFOG practical with high performance and low cost.

Abstract:A broadband source-driven resonant fiber-optic gyroscope (RFOG) can reduce coherence-related noise, thus achiev-ing a better sensitivity with a much simpler configuration than the traditional system with a coherent source. Its detection sensitivity, however, is still limited by the excess relative intensity noise (RIN) of the broadband source. In this paper, the RIN error mechanism in this broadband source-driven RFOG is revealed and countermeasures are presented. We demonstrate that the use of a high-finesse fiber-optic ring resonator and a high-frequency modulation -demodulation technique can reduce the RIN-induced error. It is indicated that the optimal modulation parameters can provide a RIN-induced error reduction of 6.1 dB, allowing the broadband source-driven RFOG to operate near the shot-noise-limited theoretical sensitivity. With the optimal high-frequency modulation-demodulation technique, an angle random walk of 0.0013 degrees/root h is achieved with a 200-m -long fiber-optic ring resonator of 7.6 cm diameter. This is the best result reported to date, to the best of our knowledge, for fiber-optic gyroscopes of this size. (C) 2022 Optica Publishing Group
