Abstract:Few-mode-fiber (FMF) based mode division multiplexing (MDM) is a promising technique to further increase the transmission capacity of single mode fibers. We propose and numerically investigate a fiber-optical mode converter (MC) using long period gratings (LPGs) fabricated on the FMF by point-by-point CO2 laser inscription technique. In order to precisely excite three modes (LP01, LP11, and LP02), both untilted LPG and tilted LPG are comprehensively optimized through the length, index modulation depth, and tilt angle of the LPG in order to achieve a mode contrast ratio (MCR) of more than 20dB with less wavelength dependence. It is found that the proposed MCs have obvious advantages of high MCR, low mode crosstalk, easy fabrication and maintenance, and compact size.

Abstract:We designed a multidefect nonlinear superstructure fiber (SF) to serve as the gain medium of optical parametric amplification. In both theoretical derivation and simulation results, the signal amplification proved to achieve enhancement at certain frequencies where the local field intensities were increased or the slow group velocities of the modes were greatly slowed down on the band edges to offset the negative effect raised by large wave vector mismatching.

Abstract:We optimize the novel configuration of a hybrid fiber amplifier - Raman assisted-fiber-based optical parametric amplifier (R-FOPA),in which the parametric gain and Raman gain profiles are combined to achieve a flat composite gain profile. The pump powers and the fiber length in the hybrid amplifier are effectively optimized by genetic algorithm (GA) scheme. The optimization results indicate that the R-FOPA can achieve a 200-nm flat bandwidth spectrum with the gain of 20 dB and ripple of less than 4 dB.

Abstract:We propose mode couplers and converters based on dual-core hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber (HC-PBGF) structures, which might be potential solutions for integrated all-fiber multiplexers or demultiplexers of a mode-division multiplexed (MDM) transmission system using HC-PBGFs. Coupling properties of LP01 and LP11 mode in the mode coupler are investigated and applied to mode separators and polarization separators. Mode transition from LP01 to LP11 and LP21 mode are demonstrated in the mode converter whose smaller core is expected as input end and matched with single-mode fiber. The coupling between fundamental mode and high-order modes is accomplished through the resonant effect, which is fulfilled by modifying the structure parameter of the smaller core. Such mode converters based on dual-core HC-PBGF could be a promising substitute for the free-space coupling device, which is costly and not suitable for integration design in MDM systems and other hollow-core fiber experiments and applications.

Abstract:A broadband two-pump optical parametric amplifier with ultra-flat gain spectra is proposed in a single-section highly nonlinear fiber. By elaborately setting the dispersions and pump wavelength space, a gain over 250nm with 0.02-dB uniformity is obtained. The pump polarizations and fiber length can be changed, achieving polarization-insensitive or higher gain, while the flatness and bandwidth of gain curve remain the same.

Abstract:Independent light propagation through one or multiple modes is commonly considered as a basic demand for mode manipulation in few-mode fiber (FMF)- or multimode fiber (MMF)-based optical systems such as transmission links, optical fiber lasers, or distributed optical fiber sensors. However, the insertion of doped-fiber amplifiers always kills the entire effort by inducing significant modal crosstalk. In this paper, we propose the design of doped-fiber amplifiers in FMF-based systems adopting identical multiple-ring-core (MRC) index profiles for both passive and doped fibers to achieve low modal crosstalk. We develop the direct-glass-transition (DGT) modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD) processing for precise fabrication of few-mode erbium-doped fibers (FM-EDFs) with MRC profiles of both refractive index and erbium-ion doping distribution. Then, a few-mode erbium-doped-fiber amplifier (FM-EDFA) with a maximum gain of 26.08 dB and differential modal gain (DMG) of 2.3 dB is realized based on fabricated FM-EDF matched with a transmission FMF supporting four linearly polarized (LP) modes. With the insertion of the FM-EDFA, 60 + 60 km simultaneous LP01/LP11/LP21/LP02 01 / LP 11 / LP 21 / LP 02 transmission without inter-modal multiple-input multiple-output digital signal processing (MIMO-DSP) is successfully demonstrated. Abstract:We propose a novel multi-wavelength fiber optical parametric oscillator (MW-FOPO) based on a ring cavity. A highly nonlinear fiber and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer formed by two 3-dB optical couplers are used as the gain medium and the comb filter, respectively. Multi-wavelength lasing of the MW-FOPO with an ultra-narrow wavelength spacing of about 0.08 nm is achieved. The output spectrum of the MW-FOPO covers a wavelength regime from 1510 nm to 1615 nm (for lasing wavelengths with the power that exceeds -60 dBm). The stability of the MW-FOPO is discussed and experimentally demonstrated. A comparison of the output spectra between the MW-FOPO and the multi-wavelength Erbium-doped fiber laser is also presented.

Abstract:Recently, orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing has attracted much attention for providing an exponential growth in optical fiber capacity. As an irreplaceable component to promote long-haul OAM mode fiber transmission system, the on-line OAM mode-multiplexed fiber amplifier need to be developed. In this paper, we propose a Gaussian-like erbium doping distribution design method for ring-core erbium doped fiber (RC-EDF) to optimize the differential modal gain (DMG), which can reduce the fabrication complexity of the fiber preform. With a good match with original design, the fabricated RC-EDF was characterized by all the supporting four OAM modes ($vert l vert$ = 1, 2, 3, 4) multiplexed amplification, which achieves an ultra-low DMG less than 0.3 dB at 1550 nm. The gain is above 15 dB and DMG is less than 1.2 dB for four OAM modes across the C-band under a 500 mW pump power. As a proof for transmission, 32 channels (8 wavelengths 4 OAM modes) carrying 32-Gbaud quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) OAM modes multiplexed-WDM transmission over the OAM-EDFA is demonstrated. The proposed OAM-EDFA with the average OSNR penalties of 0.34 dB may promote the practical implementation for the long-haul OAM modes fiber transmission system.

Abstract:In this letter, we proposed and fabricated a single ring uniform erbium-doped ring-core fiber with trench assisted to achieve high modal gain and low differential modal gain (DMG) in amplifying orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes. This is enabled by confining all modes effectively in a highly similar area to improve the overlap integral of erbium ions and mode fields. Theoretical analyses and experimental results suggest the proposed fiber can support four OAM mode groups ( = 1 - 4, 14 OAM modes in total). Moreover, the negligible distortion in the intensity and phase patterns of the OAM modes after amplification indicates a stable and effective amplification process. Furthermore, the experimental results exhibit that the RC-EDF amplifier acquires some favorable performances with a high modal gain more than 23 dB and low DMG less than 1 dB for all 14 OAM modes across the whole C-band.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel design of weakly-coupled few-mode photonic crystal fiber (FM-PCF) supporting 6 vector modes (HE11a, HE11b, TM01, HE21a, HE21b, TE01) with ultra-flattened chromatic dispersion is proposed. We investigate the impact of fiber parameters on chromatic dispersion, minimum effective refractive index difference (minΔneff), confinement loss, effective mode area, bending loss and nonlinear coefficient. To achieve ultra-flattened chromatic dispersion and large minΔneff, an extra small elliptical defected hole is introduced in the fiber core. The circular holes in the first ring are replaced by elliptical holes to further obtain flattened-chromatic dispersion. The simulation results show that the chromatic dispersion slope (< 2.1 × 10–5 ns/km/nm2) and large minΔneff (> 6 × 10–4) are obtained for the optimized fiber structure. And the proposed FM-PCF has low confinement loss (< 10−4 dB/km) and good bending resistance. The proposed fiber can achieve an ultra-flattened chromatic dispersion (< 0.032 ns/nm/km) of 6 vector modes around C-band, and has the potential applications for large-capacity mode division multiplexing communication systems.

Abstract:In this paper, a pseudo-elliptical-ring-core polarization-maintaining few-mode fiber structure assisted by concentric circular stress-applying region is proposed. Numerical simulation results show that the structure can stably support 14 transmission modes. By introducing two elliptical stress regions with low refractive index inside the core, and a circular stress region with concentric core between the fiber core and cladding, the effective refractive index difference between higher-order modes is significantly improved. In the C+L band, the minimum refractive index difference between adjacent modes is not less than 2 10 -4 . At 1550 nm, the effective refractive index difference between the two fundamental modes reaches 4.8 10 -4 . The mode dispersions are less than |-33| ps/nm/km, and the maximum bending loss is in the order of 10 -7 dB/m (bending radius ≥ 2.5 cm). This work may pave the way for the development of short-distance large-capacity optical fibers.

Abstract:The multicore fiber amplifier, as a key component in spatial division multiplexing (SDM) communication systems, presents higher technical difficulty compared to traditional multi-channel single core fiber amplifiers, which has sparked widespread attention. To achieve balance, efficiency, miniaturization, and cost-effectiveness in the performance of multi-core optical fiber amplifiers, we propose an innovative triple cladding 13-core Er/Yb co-doped microstructured fiber (13CEYDMOF). The proposed fiber features an outer cladding with peanut-shaped air holes, which enables uniform excitation of the 13 cores using a single multimode laser pump source within the inner cladding. This approach also prevents damage or aging of the fiber's outer coating due to the pump laser. Furthermore, the design of Peanut-Shaped Air Holes effectively increases the numerical aperture (NA) of the inner cladding while reducing the outer diameter of the fiber, enhancing the fiber's mechanical flexibility. To address the coupling difficulties caused by air holes, we bi-directionally pump the 13CEYDMOFA by utilizing a combined technique of the side winding and end pumping. The experimental results show that the 13CEYDMOFA can achieve an average gain of 23.8 dB, a noise figure (NF) of ∼4.6 dB, and an inter-core gain difference of less than 2 dB in the wavelength range of 1529–1565 nm. The in-line amplified transmission experiment demonstrates that the 13CEYDMOFA is well suited for the 13 spatial channels transmission. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to realize high performance telecommunication band amplification in a multicore microstructure fiber.

Abstract:Recently optical amplification technologies for mode-division multiplexing (MDM) transmission systems and networks have attracted great interest. In this article, we first propose a compact structure of few-mode Erbium-doped fiber amplifier (FM-EDFA) for weakly-coupled MDM amplification, which is characterized by weakly-coupled few-mode Erbium-doped fiber (EDF), cascaded mode-selective couplers (MSCs) for spatial mode control of pump lights, and few-mode wavelength multiplexer (FM-WMUX) for pumpsignal coupling. Compared to previous studies, the proposed FM-EDFA has a similar structure with commercial single-mode EDFA (SM-EDFA) and can support weakly-coupled MDM transmission without inducing large modal crosstalk. Then related components are designed and fabricated for a 2-mode proposed FM-EDFA. The mode-field mismatching between transmission FMF and EDF under central alignment is investigated by simulation. Thanks to the effective suppression of modal crosstalk for the optical components, the transmission FMF, the EDF and their coupling, we experimentally demonstrate the first weakly-coupled MDM-WDM amplification and transmission over 15-km 2-mode FMF with 10-Gbs optical on-off keying (OOK) modulation and direct detection. The proposed FM-EDFA can be extended to MDM transmission systems and networks supporting more modes.

Abstract:A mid-infrared fiber optical parametric oscillator is proposed and designed based on a three-hole As(2)S(5) suspended-core fiber (SCF). The eigenmodes of the SCF are depicted and the pump condition for single-mode operation is analyzed. The zero-dispersion wavelength is shifted to 2 μm by tuning the core diameter of the SCF. Using the degenerate four-wave mixing coupled-wave equations, a tuning range of the idler wavelength from 2 to 5 μm and a maximum conversion efficiency of 19% are numerically predicted in a 0.1-m-long SCF pumped by a 2.7 W thulium-doped fiber laser.

Abstract:We propose a solid-core Bragg few-mode fiber with alternating layers of high/low refractive indices. The refractive index of the low-index layer in the cladding is the same as that of the fiber core. The influences of filling ratio, periodic structure width and core size on n(eff), Delta n(eff) and Alpha(eff) are investigated. Bending loss of each guided mode and differential mode delay (DMD) between adjacent spatial modes are also studied at 1550 nm. With appropriate geometrical parameters, the minimum effective refractive index difference (min Delta n(eff)) between adjacent modes is 2x10(-3) at 1550 nm. Wavelength-dependent performance is analyzed subsequently ranging from 1180 nm to 1630 nm. Numerical simulations indicate that such fiber could support 7 linearly polarized (LP) modes and have good bending insensibility performance. These results illustrate that the proposed fiber could be a promising candidate for mode division multiplexing to enhance optical transmission capacity.

Abstract:We present a weakly-coupled air-hole-bow-tie-assisted few-mode fiber (AH-BT-FMF) supporting 26 eigenmodes for short-haul communication systems across the C + L band. The elliptical core, air holes, and bow-tie stress-applying area are introduced to effectively split adjacent eigenmodes. We evaluate the impact of fiber parameters on minimum effective refractive index difference (min Δ n eff ) between adjacent modes, birefringence (B), and bending loss at a wavelength of 1550 nm. The broadband performance of the fiber is further investigated across the C + L band, including the effective refractive index difference (Δ n eff ) between adjacent modes, differential mode delay (DMD), dispersion, and effective area ( A eff ). Simulated results indicate that the 26 eigenmodes supported by the designed fiber are completely separated. The min Δ n eff between adjacent modes is larger than 1.982 × 10 −4 over the whole C + L band. And the designed fiber has a higher effective area (66.56 –131.1 μm 2 ), lower DMD (− 8.07 to 10.96 ns/km), and good bending resistance (< 10 –4 dB/m). The designed fiber can be used for short-haul multiple-input multiple-output-free eigenmode-division multiplexing systems to improve transmission capacity and expand bandwidth.

Abstract:Recently, few-mode Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (FM-EDFA) for mode-division multiplexing (MDM) transmission have attracted much interest. In this paper, we propose a novel few-mode gain-flattening filter (FM-GFF) based on long-period fiber gratings (LPFG) in double-cladding few-mode fiber (DC-FMF). Due to weak coupling among all the core modes and limited number of inner-cladding modes, the phase matching condition for a specific FM-LPFG can be satisfied only between one core mode and one inner-cladding mode each time and independent gain flattening can be realized for each core mode without influencing the other ones. Moreover, both DC-FMF and transmission FMF have the same core refractive index and radius, while the inner-cladding of DC-FMF and the cladding of transmission FMF have the same refractive index, which can effectively maintain the weakly-coupled condition for their connections. We show by simulation that the output gain spectra for all the 4 or 6 linearly-polarized (LP) core modes in two kinds of DC-FMFs can be independently flattened to less than 0.6-dB in the whole C-band by the cascading LPFGs in the DC-FMF. The proposed FM-GFF scheme is beneficial for the practical design of FM-EDFAs.
