Abstract:In this paper, a novel approach for the identification of the shaft centre orbits is proposed, which is based on wavelet modulus maxima. For this approach, continuous wavelet transform is utilised upon the Θ–S diagram of the shaft centre orbits, and then, maxima lines are extracted and Lipschitz exponents α of every maxima line are calculated by non-linear least-squares method. The number of maxima lines with positive α, the mean of the positive α, the number of maxima lines with negative α and the mean of the negative α are used as features of the shaft orbits. In succession, the four features are used as the inputs of the back-propagation network to classify the shaft orbits for the fault diagnosis for the rotating machines. The experimental data of four classes of faults (rub-impact, oil whirl, coupling misalignment and unbalance) are used to test the performance of the proposed method. The test result indicates that the proposed method is very effective with the advantages of fewer features used and faster training of the network, and can fulfil classification of the shaft centre orbit with satisfactory accuracy.

Abstract:Considering data acquisition characteristics of vibration signals of rotating machinery, a new rotor orbit purification method using morphological Haar wavelet is proposed. With this method, noise can be eliminated and purified rotor center's orbits can be obtained following filtration of vibration signals by a combination of decomposition and reconstruction based on morphological Haar wavelet, without requiring consideration of the rotor's vibration spectrum characteristics and neither any prior experience in rotor fault treatment, actual practice have proved the effectiveness of this method. Compared with other methods, this way is more practicable as its morphology wavelets are more effective, its algorithm more simple, calculation and on-site application more facile. © 2008 IEEE.

Abstract:This paper presents an estimate method of torsional vibration from radial vibration signal of rotating machinery.The radial vibration has a phase modulation because of the coupling of torsional and radial vibration.By the method of Empirical Mode Decomposition(EMD),the radial vibration signal is decomposed into a series of Intrinsic Mode Functions(IMF).With the Hilbert transform,an estimate value of torsional vibration is acquired from one of the IMFs.According to the analysis of field data,the method is feasible.

Abstract:A novel method for bearing fault detection through the sound signal translated from the vibration signal is introduced. The wavelet packet transform is used to preprocess the signal, then the computed wavelet coefficients are divided into clusters accordingly, important frequency ranges have a larger number of clusters than less important frequency ranges. These clusters extract the time-frequency information to get the fault characteristic of the bearing. In order to identify the fault, the method based on rough set theory is adopted. The result from experience proves that fault types can be identified and diagnosed by the above method. Furthermore, it attains nearly the same accuracy, compared with artificial neural network.

The development of fault diagnostic technique is helpful to avoid unexpected failures and costly machinery downtime. This paper is devoted to identify rotating machinery orbits of shaft centerline based on neural networks. The orbits of shaft centerline are pieces of indispensable information of vibration in rotating machinery fault diagnosis. A special shape of orbit of shaft centerline corresponds to a special fault type. The study provides with the means for identifying orbits of shaft centerline automatically.

Abstract:The rotor system is the core equipment of industrial rotating machinery, and ensuring its safety is an essential basis for improving the productivity of the equipment. As a critical monitoring quantity reflecting the operating status of the rotor system, identification models based on axis orbits are effective means for detecting equipment faults. However, most of the existing axis orbit identification models belong to the category of image recognition, and these methods have defects such as unclear physical meaning of features and weak generalization performance. Therefore, the paper returns to the essence of axis orbits and proposes a rotor axis orbit recognition method based on multivariate swing signals, feature extraction and pattern recognition. Firstly, the mutually perpendicular swing signals of the rotor are obtained based on eddy current sensors. Secondly, we propose a feature extraction tool for extracting the multivariate signals named enhanced hierarchical multivariate fuzzy entropy (EHM v FE), a nonlinear dynamics metric based on the enhanced hierarchical decomposition method. Next, the features of axis orbits are extracted by the EHM v FE. Finally, some of the extracted features are input into an extreme learning machine (ELM) for model training, and the effectiveness of the method is verified with the remaining samples. We apply the proposed method to the rotor axis orbit identification case, and the results show that its recognition rate is 98.963%. In comparison experiments with recognition models based on nonlinear dynamics indicators, multivariate signal processing methods, traditional image feature extraction methods, and popular deep learning models, the proposed model shows substantial advantages, verifying the reasonableness and superiority of the proposed method. This study provides a new idea for rotor shaft fault diagnosis, which has significant reference value for promoting the development of intelligent operation and maintenance of industrial equipment.

Abstract:This paper deals with spectral estimation for torsional vibration analysis. A new method based on auto-regression(AR) model and wavelet analysis is presented to process the signal with low S/N. A simulation example is given to show the effectiveness of the method. Finally, a torsional vibration signal acquired from a rotor kit is processed to gain the inherent frequencies of the rotor-disk system. The results are compared with those from numerical computation of transfer matrix method (TMM), and they are found to be in good agreement.

Abstract:Based on primary theory of wavelet packet transformation, the signal of rolling bearing fault was processed, The signal characteristic can be effective withdrawn from the actual signal after wavelet packet decomposition and restructuring, Then, using Fourier transform, it presents an approach to get the frequency of fault signal. The experimental result proves that, the wavelet packet analysis can adaptively choose the related frequency band according to the analyzed signal characteristic. The practice example shows that this method is effective. The research results provide the theoretical foundation for rotary machine fault diagnosis, and have important practical value.

Abstract:In industrial settings, analyzing vibration signals from rolling bearings is a key method for diagnosing faults in rotating machinery. However, these faults often appear as a series of transient events with quickly changing frequencies, which makes it difficult for traditional time-frequency analysis techniques to accurately capture these characteristics. Methods like synchrosqueezing transmute and multi-synchrosqueezing transmute struggle with this task. In this study, we introduce a new method called the Wavelet-Enhanced Transient-Extracting Transform (WTET). Unlike traditional approaches that rely on instantaneous frequency in a time-domain model, WTET uses a group delay (GD) estimator in a frequency-domain model. This allows for more accurate characterization of bearing and rub impact fault signals. Additionally, WTET is better at resisting noise compared to the traditional wavelet transform because it isolates only the central coefficients in the time-frequency domain. WTET also retains the ability to reconstruct the original signal, which makes it effective at extracting different signal modes. Our analysis shows that WTET offers improved diagnostic capability for detecting bearing faults.

Abstract:Rotating machinery fault detection is significant to avoid serious accidents and huge economic losses effectively. However, due to the vibration signal with the character of non-stationarity and nonlinearity, the detection and extraction of the fault feature turn into a challenging task. Therefore, a novel method called improved spectral kurtosis (ISK) with adaptive redundant multiwavelet packet (ARMP) is proposed for this task. Spectral kurtosis (SK) has been proved to be a powerful tool to detect and characterize the non-stationary signal. To improve the SK in filter limitation and enhance the resolution of spectral analysis as well as match fault feature optimally, the ARMP is introduced into the SK. Moreover, since kurtosis does not reflect the actual trend of periodic impulses, the SK is improved by incorporating an evaluation index called envelope spectrum entropy as supplement. The proposed method is applied to the rolling element bearing and gear fault detection to validate its reliability and effectiveness. Compared with the conventional frequency spectrum, envelope spectrum, original SK and some single wavelet methods, the results indicate that it could improve the accuracy of frequency-band selection and enhance the ability of rotating machinery fault detection.

Abstract:This paper proposes a multiscale slope feature extraction method using wavelet-based multiresolution analysis for rotating machinery fault diagnosis. The new method mainly includes three following steps: the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is first performed on vibration signals gathered by accelerometer from rotating machinery to achieve a series of detailed signals at different scales; the variances of multiscale detailed signals are then calculated; finally, the wavelet-based multiscale slope features are estimated from the slope of logarithmic variances. The presented features reveal an inherent structure within the power spectra of vibration signals. The effectiveness of the proposed feature was verified by two experiments on bearing defect identification and gear wear diagnosis. Experimental results show that the wavelet-based multiscale slope features have the merits of high accuracy and stability in classifying different conditions of both bearings and gearbox, and thus are valuable for machinery fault diagnosis.

Abstract:At constant rotating speed, localized faults in rotating machine tend to result in periodic shocks and thus arouse periodic transients in the vibration signal. The transient feature analysis has always been a crucial problem for localized fault detection, and the key aim for transient feature analysis is to identify the model and its parameters (frequency, damping ratio and time index) of the transient, and the time interval, i.e. period, between transients. Based on wavelet and correlation filtering, a technique incorporating transient modeling and parameter identification is proposed for rotating machine fault feature detection. With the proposed method, both parameters of a single transient and the period between transients can be identified from the vibration signal, and localized faults can be detected based on the parameters, especially the period. First, a simulation signal is used to test the performance of the proposed method. Then the method is applied to the vibration signals of different types of bearings with localized faults in the outer race, the inner race and the rolling element, respectively, and all the results show that the period between transients, representing the localized fault characteristic, is successfully detected. The method is also utilized in gearbox fault diagnosis and the effectiveness is verified through identifying the parameters of the transient model and the period. Moreover, it can be drawn that for bearing fault detection, the single-side wavelet model is more suitable than double-side one, while the double-side model for gearbox fault detection. This research proposed an effective method of localized fault detection for rotating machine fault diagnosis through transient modeling and parameter detection.

Abstract:To realize a more economical measurement of rotational shaft centerline orbit and vibration, a shaft centerline orbit reconstruction method using a specifically designed electrostatic sensor is proposed in this paper. The sensor consists of 3 sensing electrodes, one shaft cover working as charge source, and a cylindrical shield covering the three electrodes. Based on electrostatic induction, the proposed sensor is sensitive with shaft movement so that the shaft centerline displacement and orbit can be reconstructed. The CAE software COMSOL Multiphysics is used for sensor modeling and simulation analysis. Experiment is carried out to test the performance of the proposed method which proves the feasibility of the novel sensor for shaft centerline orbit and vibration monitoring.

Abstract:The responses of shaft bow and their relationships with unbalanceresponses and mechanical or electronic run out are analyzed based on the theory of rotor dynamics.The responses of shaft bow are separated from the unbalance responses successfully by making use of vibration information under different rotor runs.An identification method of thermal bend is presented based on the 2D-holospectrum technique.Experimental results show that when bow phase is steady and amplitude is variable,the tangent of initial phase point on the 2D-holospectrum is parallel,which can be effectively used for diagnosis of bent shaft.

Abstract:Identification of orbit responses can make the active protection operation more easily realize for active magnetic bearings (AMB) in case of touchdowns. This paper presents an identification method of the orbit responses rooting on signal processing of rotor displacements during touchdowns. The recognition method consists of two major steps. Firstly, the combined rub and bouncing is distinguished from the other orbit responses by the mathematical expectation of axis displacements of the rotor. Because when the combined rub and bouncing occurs, the rotor of AMB will not be always close to the touchdown bearings (TDB). Secondly, we recognize the pendulum vibration and the full rub by the Fourier spectrum of displacement in horizontal direction, as the frequency characteristics of the two responses are different. The principle of the whole identification algorithm is illustrated by two sets of signal generated by a dynamic model of the specific rotor-TDB system. The universality of the method is validated by other four sets of signal. Besides, the adaptability of noise is also tested by adding white noises with different strengths, and the result is promising. As the mathematical expectation and Discrete Fourier transform are major calculations of the algorithm, the calculation quantity of the algorithm is low, so it is fast, easily realized and embedded in the AMB controller, which has an important engineering value for the protection of AMBs during touchdowns.

Abstract:The feature of vibration signal of rotating machine vibration signal with the defect on the surface of shaft was analyzed. And it is pointed out in this paper that the defect on the surface of shaft will affect the real vibration values in some cases. So it is necessary to estimate the affection of the defect on the vibration values. In this paper the wavelet transform was used as the tools for analyzing the feature of the vibration signal. And the feature of the defect on wavelet coefficients is presented out. Also some judgements rules for diagnosing the defect through the wavelet coefficients of vibration signal were given. In the last part we analyzed a real vibration signal got from a centrifugal compressor with defect on the surface of shaft and the analyzing result was given too.

Abstract:This paper presents a computational method, termed optimized envelope order spectrum, for bearing defect diagnosis in rotary machines that operate under non-stationary conditions. The method takes a holistic approach to bearing vibration signal analysis by integrating wavelet enveloping, computed order tracking, and spectral analysis. A scale selection criterion based on the maximum relative energy to Renyi entropy ratio is proposed to determine optimal decomposition scale for wavelet analysis. To eliminate the effect of speed variations and facilitate envelope-order spectral analysis, computed order tracking is introduced. The effectiveness of the method for identifying and localizing bearing defect is evaluated numerically and confirmed by experimental studies.

Abstract:The rotor vibrating phase-measuring system of the rotating machine based on the hardware structure has larger measuring errors.The reason exists in more complicated circuit structure and the outside noise interfering.A new method for the hardware circuit combined with the software calculating for improving precision is proposed based on wavelet analysis,for which the collection-noise and harmonic noise can be reduced in A/D transform by even symmetry wavelet.In order to measure the vibrating signal phase,the position value of signal peak points is calculated by Newton' two order insertion formula.Simulation results show that the signal-to-noise ratio of the original waveform with sampling noise can be(improved) and the peak points of the signal keep unshifted.The results of simulation and experiment were(also) provided in this paper.

Abstract:Fault diagnosis of rotating machinery is very important and critical to avoid serious accidents. However, the complex and non-stationary vibration signals with a large amount of noise make the fault detection to be challenging, especially at the early stage. Based on the inner product principle, fault detection using wavelet transforms is to match fault features most correlative to basis functions, and its effectiveness is determined by the construction and choice of wavelet basis function. In this paper, a new method based on adaptive multiwavelets via two-scale similarity transforms (TSTs) is proposed. Multiwavelets can offer multiple wavelet basis functions and so have the possibility of matching various fault features preferably. TSTs are simple and straightforward methods to design a series of new biorthogonal multiwavelets with some desirable properties. Using TSTs, a changeable and adaptive multiwavelet library is established so as to provide various ascendant multiple basis functions for inner product operation. By the rule of kurtosis maximization principle, optimal multiwavelets most similar to the fault features of a given signal are searched for. The applications to a rolling bearing of outer-race fault and a flue gas turbine unit of rub-impact fault show that the proposed method is an effective approach to detecting the impulse feature components hidden in vibration signals and performs well for rotating machinery fault diagnosis.
