Abstract:We demonstrate that optical microfibers integrated in Yb-doped fiber lasers boost broadband noise-like pulse (NLP) generation via dispersion and nonlinearity management, with an optical spectrum spanning from below 1000 nm to beyond 1600 nm when the diameter of the optical microfiber is 1.2 µm. Numerical simulations show that dispersion and nonlinearity management provided by the optical microfiber is responsible for the broadband NLP generation. Furthermore, it is shown experimentally that dispersion and nonlinearity management via optical microfibers can also bring the highest optical rogue waves along with the broadest optical spectrum.

Abstract:Silica nanowires provide strong mode confinement in a cylindrical silica-core/air-cladding geometry and serve a model system for studying nonlinear propagation of short optical pulses inside fibers. We report on the fiber diameter dependence of the supercontinuum generated by femtosecond laser pulses in silica fiber tapers with average diameters in the range of 200 nm to 1200 nm. We observe a strong diameter-dependence of the spectral broadening, which can be attributed to the fiber's diameter-dependent dispersion and nonlinearity. The short interaction length (less than 20 mm) and the low energy threshold for supercontinuum generation (about 1 nJ) make tapered fibers with diameters between 400 nm and 800 nm an ideal source of coherent white-light source in nanophotonics.
Optimization of supercontinuum generation in highly nonlinear fiber for DFG based mid-infrared frequency comb

Abstract:A theoretical investigation into the nonlinear propagation and dispersive wave generation in the anomalous dispersion region of the highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) is present here. Owe to the non-linearity of dispersive wave and four-wave-mixing, by changing the parameter of input peak pulse, pulse width, initial chirp, and the parameter of HNLF, the optimum output in the short-wavelength region can be observed in the simulation results. It is found that the dispersive wave is mainly due to pulse trapping across the zero-dispersion wavelength (ZDW) by simulating the dispersive wave with different conditions. In the experiment, we can utilize the optimum parameter by the simulation to produce a high power pump source for difference frequency generation (DFG) method by 1550 nm near-infrared optical frequency comb. We have demonstrated a high pump power up to 12.5 mW coverage from 1025 to 1215 nm with a center wavelength of 1064 nm by choosing the HNLF with the dispersion of 4.933 ps/(nm. km) which is higher to the previous research. In our research, the simulation and experiment results are in good agreement in the article.

Abstract:We report on a femtosecond nonlinear amplification fiber laser system using a vector-dispersion compressor, which consists of a transmission grating pair and multipass cell based Gires-Tournois interferometer mirrors. The mirror is designed with nearly zero group-delay dispersion and large negative third-order dispersion. As a result, the third-order dispersion of the compressor can be adjusted independently to compensate the nonlinear phase shift of amplified pulses to reduce the pulse pedestal. With this scheme, the system outputs 44 fs laser pulses with little wing at 26.6W output average power and 531 nJ pulse energy, corresponding to 10.8MW peak power. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We demonstrate a nonlinearity optimization method by altering distribution of passive fibers in a dissipative-soliton mode-locked fiber laser to level up output parameters. In the numerical simulation, we found that the passive fiber segment after gain fiber characterizes the highest average B-integral among fiber segments. By reducing the length of this fiber section and keeping the total passive fiber length as constant, the output pulse energy can be effectively scaled up while maintaining a short dechirped pulse duration, resulting in boosting peak power. With this method, 37-nJ pulses are generated from a dissipative-soliton mode-locked cladding pumped ytterbium-doped single-mode fiber laser in the experiment. The pulse can be dechirped to 66 fs with 350 kW peak power. Moreover, the pulse pedestal is suppressed by a vector-dispersion compressor.
Boosting dispersive wave emission via spectral phase shaping in nonlinear optical fibers

Abstract:<p>Dispersive waves (DWs) radiation in optical fibers allow to excite frequencies in spectral regions that are otherwise difficult to access. However, the resonant emission is weak and phase matching inhibits its shaping, making it ineffective in many applications. Here, we numerically investigated that DWs generated from high-energy pulses propagating in nonlinear optical fibers can be controlled through spectral phase modulation. Using tunable asymmetric and oscillatory temporal pulse shapes obtained by cubic and quadratic spectral phase modulation, we excite a multiple emission process that strongly enhances the energy and peaks of DWs. Successive collisions between the shed soliton and multiple secondary peaks of the asymmetric pulse give the mechanism to stimulate various resonant frequencies. The whole process can be precisely controlled by simply adjusting the spectral phase modulation structure without the need to change the fiber length. This radiation is either reduced or enhanced by the Raman effect depending on whether the third-order dispersion is positive or negative. Our results provide a novel strategy to manipulate DWs emission and particularly to boost the DWs energy in optical fibers that may be relevant in the development of novel electromagnetic sources for broadband supercontinuum and on-chip frequency-comb generation.</p>

Abstract:Optical microfibers can show very strong normal dispersion (as high as 2700 ps2/km) around 2 μm, a highly desired feature for dispersion management in ultrafast lasers. Here we report a dissipative soliton fiber laser at 2 μm enabled by an optical microfiber. The full width at half-maximum of the optical spectrum was about 50 nm, and its flatness could be attributed to the third-order dispersion compensation provided by the optical microfiber. The pulse duration was measured to be 195 fs after a dechirping single-mode fiber. Our results suggest a new route to dissipative soliton fiber lasers at 2 μm, with a wide and flat spectrum and thus a short dechirped pulse.

Abstract:Mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers around 1 μm are attractive for high power applications and low noise pulse train generation. Mode-locked fiber lasers working in soliton and stretched-pulse regime outperform others in terms of the laser noise characteristics, mechanical stability and easy maintenance. However, conventional optical fibers always show a normal group velocity dispersion around 1 μm, leading to the inconvenience for necessary dispersion management. Here we show that optical microfibers having a large anomalous dispersion around 1 μm can be integrated into mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers with ultralow insertion loss down to −0.06 dB, enabling convenient dispersion management of the laser cavity. Besides, optical microfibers could also be adopted to spectrally broaden and to dechirp the ultrashort pulses outside the laser cavity, giving rise to a pulse duration of about 110 fs. We believe that this demonstration may facilitate all-fiber format high-performance ultrashort pulse generation at 1 μm and may find applications in precision measurements, large-scale facility synchronization and evanescent-field-based optical sensing.
20 GHz fiber-integrated femtosecond pulse and supercontinuum generation with a resonant electro-optic frequency comb

Abstract:Frequency combs with mode spacing in the range of 10 to 20 gigahertz (GHz) are critical for increasingly important applications such as astronomical spectrograph calibration, high-speed dual-comb spectroscopy, and low-noise microwave generation. While electro-optic modulators and microresonators can provide narrowband comb sources at this repetition rate, a significant remaining challenge is a means to produce pulses with sufficient peak power to initiate nonlinear supercontinuum generation spanning hundreds of terahertz (THz) as required for self-referencing in these applications. Here, we provide a simple, robust, and universal solution to this problem using off-the-shelf polarization-maintaining (PM) amplification and nonlinear fiber components. This fiber-integrated approach for nonlinear temporal compression and supercontinuum generation is demonstrated with a resonant electro-optic frequency comb at 1550 nm. We show how to readily achieve pulses shorter than 60 fs at a repetition rate of 20 GHz and with peak powers in excess of 2 kW. The same technique can be applied to picosecond pulses at 10 GHz to demonstrate temporal compression by a factor of 9x yielding 50 fs pulses with peak power of 5.5 kW. These compressed pulses enable flat supercontinuum generation spanning more than 600 nm after propagation through multi-segment dispersion-tailored anomalous-dispersion highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) or tantala waveguides. The same 10 GHz source can readily achieve an octave-spanning spectrum for self-referencing in dispersion-engineered silicon nitride waveguides. This simple all-fiber approach to nonlinear spectral broadening fills a critical gap for transforming any narrowband 10 to 20 GHz frequency comb into a broadband spectrum for a wide range of applications that benefit from the high pulse rate and require access to the individual comb modes.

Abstract:Optical micro/nanofibers (MNFs) with a diameter below or close to the wavelength of the light, have attracted significant interest for applications ranging from optical sensing, nonlinear optics, to optomechanics and atom optics. While continuous-wave (CW) optical waveguiding is frequently adopted, so far most of the MNFs are operated in a low-power region (e.g., < 0.1 W). Here we demonstrate high-power CW optical waveguiding around 1550-nm wavelength in a silica MNF with power up to 13 W, which is more than 30 times higher than demonstrated previously. Our results may pave a way towards high-power MNF optics, for both scientific research and technological applications.
500-nm broadband light generation in highly nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber by soliton laser

Abstract:A compact and robust broadband light source is desirable for frequency combs, and broadband infrared microscopy. To address these demanding problems, we report the generation of broadband spectroscopy using highly nonlinear dispersion-shifted fiber (HNL-DSF) in an all-fiber system without any free-space optics instruments. However, due to the damage to the glass material by a large number of photons at high power, the ability of the fiber to widen will weaken over time. Therefore, the seed pulse used in this paper is the traditional soliton mode-locked pulse, which has lower energy than other types of mode-locked pulse. After two-stage amplification, the peak power, pulse width, and pulse energy of the soliton pulse are about 2 kW, 10 ps, and 18.79 nJ respectively. Amplifying the power of a low-energy pulse to pump the dispersion-shifted fiber, the ultra-wideband spectrum of more than 500 nm can be obtained without damaging the fiber, which is an efficient method to generate a wide spectrum. This method can be potentially used in astronomy, industry, medicine, etc.

Abstract:Light-carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) has exhibited significant potential across a diverse array of fields. In several of these applications, broadband coherent OAM sources are essential for the functioning of optical systems. The emission of dispersive waves facilitates efficient energy transfer to distant spectral domains while preserving coherence between generated frequency components. In this work, we introduce a dual concentric-ring-core fiber design capable of generating two and four OAM dispersive waves (DWs) under conditions of anomalous dispersion and normal dispersion pumping, respectively. The physical phenomena underlying the spectral evolution are delved and each case is discussed separately. Our findings reveal that the locations and quantities of dispersive wave generation in both scenarios align with predictions derived from the corresponding phase matching conditions. This technique paves the way for the development of an efficient OAM supercontinuum source characterized by a high degree of coherence.

Efficient dispersion engineering for three-octave-spanning supercontinuum generation in nanophotonic waveguides

Abstract:We propose a dispersion-flattened technology for producing broadband and low anomalous dispersion with minimal zero-dispersion wavelengths (ZDWs). This structure can be formed by nanophotonic waveguides using different material combinations. Flat dispersion varying between 0 and 27 ps/nm/km and spanning a range of wavelengths between 1290 and 4570 nm can be achieved. Without applying dispersion hybridization and using complex material combinations, dispersion demonstrates good tolerance to pump wavelength selection and is easier to introduce. Furthermore, the designed structures are applied to generate a supercontinuum over three octaves considering wavelength dependent loss from cladding, which exhibits an excellent bandwidth of − 40 dB even with increasing losses from the waveguide material or structure generation. These findings are useful for supercontinuum generation over multiple octaves in different platforms, which is promising for self-referenced f-2f systems and spectroscopy applications.

On the dispersion management of fluorite whispering-gallery mode resonators for Kerr optical frequency comb generation in the telecom and mid-infrared range

Abstract:Optical whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators have been very attracting platforms for versatile Kerr frequency comb generations. We report a systematic study on the material dispersion of various optical materials that are capable of supporting quality factors above $10^9$. Using an analytical approximation of WGM resonant frequencies in disk resonators, we investigate the effect of the geometry and transverse mode order on the total group-velocity dispersion ($GVD$). We demonstrate that the major radii and the radial mode indices play an important role in tailoring the $GVD$ of WGM resonators. In particular, our study shows that in WGM disk-resonators, the polar families of modes have very similar $GVD$, while the radial families of modes feature dispersion values that can differ by up to several orders of magnitude. The effect of these giant dispersion shifts are experimentally evidenced in Kerr comb generation with magnesium fluoride. From a more general perspective, this critical feature enables to push the zero-dispersion wavelength of fluorite crystals towards the mid-infrared (mid-IR) range, thereby allowing for efficient Kerr comb generation in that spectral range. We show that barium fluoride is the most interesting crystal in this regard, due to its zero dispersion wavelength ($ZDW$) at $1.93 \rm{\mu m}$ and an optimal dispersion profile in the mid-IR regime. We expect our results to facilitate the design of different platforms for Kerr frequency comb generations in both telecommunication and mid-IR spectral ranges.

Abstract:We present a numerical investigation of soliton self-frequency shift in the mid-infrared (MIR) region and the generation of redshifted dispersive waves in a chalcogenide microstructured optical fiber, with the use of femtosecond pulses well within the anomalous dispersion regime. The fiber's structural parameters were carefully optimized to establish two zero-dispersion wavelengths at 2.12 and , facilitating the generation of tunable solitons with wavelength shifts of up to . A pump laser, featuring a 200-fs duration and a peak power not exceeding 1 kW, was employed in this investigation. The redshifted dispersive wave, generated at approximately , exhibited a high spectral density, characterized by a 3 dB bandwidth of 11 nm and a signal-to-noise ratio of 20 dB. The fiber exhibited a notable power proportion of 66.2% within the critical 3- range, indicating its potential for crucial applications in the MIR region. These findings highlighted the significance of effective dispersion and nonlinearity control in the fiber to enable efficient MIR wavelength generation.

Abstract:Beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) have exhibited significant potential across various fields, such as metrology, image coding, and optical communications. High-performance broadband coherent OAM sources are critical to the operation of optical systems. The emission of dispersive waves facilitates the efficient transfer of energy to distant spectral domains while preserving the coherence among the generated frequency components. Light sources that maintain consistency over a wide range can increase the efficiency of optical communication systems and improve the measurement accuracy in imaging and metrology. In this work, we propose a germanium-doped double ring-core fiber for five OAM dispersive waves (DWs) generation. The OAM 1,1 mode supported in the fiber exhibits three zero-dispersion wavelengths (ZDWs) located at 1275, 1720 and 2325 nm. When pumped under normal dispersion, the output spectrum undergoes broadening and exhibits five DWs, situated around 955, 1120, 1450, 2795 and 2965 nm, respectively. Concomitant with blue-shifted and red-shifted dispersive waves, the spectrum spans from 895 to 3050 nm with high coherence. The effect of the fiber and input pulse parameters on DWs generation, as well as the underlying dynamics of the dispersive wave generation process, are discussed. As expected, the number and location of DWs generated in the output spectrum have agreement with the prediction of the phase-matching condition. Overall, this multiple DWs generation method in the proposed fiber paves the way for developing efficient and coherent OAM light sources in fiber-based optical systems.

Abstract:Supercontinuum generation has received extensive attention because of the innovation of high nonlinear fiber, which makes the supercontinuum system more simple, compact, and efficient. Nonlinear effects are enhanced greatly during the strong interaction between the light and matter in high nonlinear fiber, and the spectrum will be broadened effectively. In this paper, we demonstrate the supercontinuum generation in a photonic crystal fiber and a conventional tapered single-mode fiber pumped by the mode-locked Yb fiber laser. Through the experimental comparison of the supercontinuum spectrum between two kinds of the high nonlinear fibers, the spectral flatness, Raman perturbation, and dispersion wave radiation are discussed for studying the characteristics of supercontinuum generation. Finally, the octave supercontinuum-based both kinds of high nonlinear fibers could be achieved. In particular, the employment of tapered single-mode fiber is proven to be an appropriate candidate for supercontinuum generation and further application.

Abstract:A) novel photonic crystal fiber structure with high nonlinearity and flattened dispersion is proposed and analyzed.A parameter δ is introduced to measure the nonlinearity and dispersion flattening.The effect of hole size on nonlinearity and dispersion of the photonic crystal fiber(PCF) is analyzed by the plane wave expansion method.The new structure introduces six additional smaller holes between the holes of the first ring to reduce the effective area,and increase the nonlinearity of the fiber.By optimizing the diameters of the first,third,and the additional rings of holes,a PCF with high nonlinearity and flattened dispersion is achieved.The dispersion parameter is within(±0.5 ps/(km·nm)) in a 330 nm wavelength range,within ±0.1 ps/(km·nm) in a 230 nm wavelength range,and within(±0.05 ps/(km·nm)) in a 200 nm wavelength range.The effective area is 2.26 μm~2.The nonlinearity-dispersion flattening parameter δ=11.8 ps·W/μm~2.
Design of all-solid W-type index fluorotellurite fibers with near-zero-flattened chromatic dispersion for optical frequency comb generation

Abstract:All-solid W-type index fluorotellurite fibers (AWFTFs) with near-zero-flattened dispersion profiles are designed for optical frequency comb (OFC) generation. The fiber core and cladding materials are ${{\rm TeO}_2} {\text - } {{\rm BaF}_2} {\text - } {{\rm Y}_2}{{\rm O}_3}$TeO2-BaF2-Y2O3 (TBY) and fluoroaluminate glasses. Those two glasses have large refractive index contrast as well as similar thermal expansion coefficients and softening temperatures. The zero-dispersion wavelength of the TBY glass is about 2517 nm. By introducing fluoroaluminate glasses with relatively low refractive index as the cladding material and controlling the core diameter, the zero-dispersion wavelength of the fiber is shifted from 2517 nm to the wavelength region of 1500-1600 nm. Furthermore, two layers of thin annular glasses including a fluoroaluminate-glass-based inter-layer and a TBY-glass-based outer layer are added around the fiber core, which makes the fiber have a flat dispersion profile in the wavelength range of 1500-1600 nm. By optimizing the parameters (the core diameter, the thickness of the thin annular glass, etc.) of AWFTFs, the fiber with the chromatic dispersion value between $ - {0.2}$-0.2 and 0.35 ps/nm/km in the wavelength range of 1500-1600 nm is achieved. To investigate the application of the AWFTFs for OFC generation via cascaded four-wave mixing, we perform numerical simulations. The simulated results show that flat-top OFC spectrum expanding from 1450 to 1700 nm with tunable mode spacing from 25 to 100 GHz can be generated in 2 m long fiber by using a 1550 nm laser with a pulse width of 0.825 ps and a peak power of 60 W as the pump source.
Two octave supercontinuum generation in a non-silica graded-index multimode fiber

Abstract:The generation of a two-octave supercontinuum from the visible to mid-infrared (700 - 2800 nm) in a non-silica graded-index multimode fiber is reported. The fiber design is based on a nanostructured core comprised of two types of drawn lead-bismuth-gallate glass rods with different refractive indices. This structure yields an effective parabolic index profile, an extended transmission window, and ten times increased nonlinearity when compared to silica fibers. Using femtosecond pulse pumping at wavelengths in both normal and anomalous dispersion regimes, a detailed study is carried out into the supercontinuum generating mechanisms and instabilities seeded by periodic self imaging. Significantly, suitable injection conditions in the high power regime are found to result in the output beam profile showing clear signatures of beam self-cleaning from nonlinear mode mixing. Experimental observations are interpreted using spatio-temporal 3+1D numerical simulations of the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation, and simulated spectra are in excellent agreement with experiment over the full two-octave spectral bandwidth. These results demonstrate a new pathway towards the generation of bright, ultrabroadband light sources in the mid-infrared.
