Abstract:We report an experimental demonstration of optical single-sideband (SSB) modulation in 60-GHz radio-over-fiber systems based on an injection-locked distributed-feedback (DFB) laser. Two heterodyning optical modes with 60-GHz spacing are injected into the DFB laser and one of them is used to lock the DFB laser. When the DFB laser is directly modulated, the modulation index of the locked mode is 15 dB larger than that of the unlocked one. The 2.5-Gb/s data transmission at 60 GHz is successfully achieved over 50-km standard single-mode fiber using the proposed SSB scheme.

Abstract:A new radio-over-fiber system for use in hybrid fiber-wireless access networks is proposed and experimentally demonstrated, which is based on cascaded injection-locked Fabry-Perot laser diodes. It is verified that the proposed technique is able to achieve a good suppression ratio of an optical carrier suppressed (OCS) signal simultaneously through a programmable optical filter and by use of optical injection locking technique. A 60 GHz carrier with downlink baseband data has been generated and down converted to baseband signal in order to be characterized in our laboratory.

Abstract:A 60-GHz bidirectional radio-over-fiber (RoF) system using two-carrier-injected distributed feedback (DFB) laser is proposed and demonstrated to realize optical single sideband (SSB) modulation for downlink. An injection-locked Fabry-P'erot laser is also carried out to realize wavelength reuse in uplink. Transmission of 2.5 Gb/s on a 60-GHz carrier for downlink and 622-Mb/s baseband signal for uplink are both successfully demonstrated over 50-km single mode fiber without chromatic dispersion compensation.

Abstract:The seamless integration of broadband optical and wireless access networks is considered to be a promising solution for next generation access networks which will provide high capacity and flexibility with lower cost. In such access networks millimeter wave (mm-wave) radio over fiber (RoF) system is a key enabling technology due to its its large bandwidth and short reach in atmosphere. In this paper, we will discuss some key technologies based on injection locked lasers for mm-wave RoF systems, including all optical generation of mm-wave signal, up- and down-conversion, single sideband modulation, and transmission.

Abstract:By utilizing chirp managed laser (CML) technology to improve the direct modulation performance of deep-submicron slotted single mode FP laser, a dispersion penalty of only 0.4 dB after 100 km SSMF is achieved. The back-to-back penalty is only 1.8 dB compared to a zero chirp LiNbO3 MZ transmitter.

Abstract:A novel method of simultaneous realization of optical carrier-suppression and single-sideband modulation using fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter is presented. In order to enhance transmission performance of radio over fiber links, we use a fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter to filter out one sideband as well as suppress the optical carrier power. The results demonstrate 20.5dB and 14.2dB improvement in the signal noise ratios when 18GHz and 10GHz microwave signals carrying 5Mbit/s quadrature-phase-shift-keyed (QPSK) format data is transmitted over 35 km single mode fiber, respectively.

Abstract:A 28Gbps PAM4 60GHz radio-over-fiber system is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by injection locking a two-tone light to a directly-modulated laser. Experimental results show negligible power penalty for the obtained PAM4 after the injection locking.

Abstract:A vector system that uses a single laser source and a dual-polarized Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) to generate two channels of optical radio frequency signals at different frequencies is experimentally studied. Using the optical subcarrier multiplexing technology, two channels of quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signals can be carried by two optical subcarriers with different frequencies based on a modulator and an optical carrier. The polarization multiplexing technology is used to overcome crosstalk of optical signals with different frequencies, and the signals can be successfully transmitted over an 80-km-long single-mode fiber (SMF). In the experiment, 15- and 30-GHz QPSK signals arc modulated using a dual-polarized MZM based on a single sideband modulation format. After the 80-km SMF transmission, the 15-GHz QPSK signal transmission performance is better than that of the 30-GHz signal. When the input power of a photodetector (PD) is more than-10.2 dBm, the bit error rate (BER) of a system after demodulation is less than 3.8 X 10(-3). The system has the advantages of simple structure, low complexity, and few electrical and optical devices, which effectively reduce cost and play a considerable role in the development of future access networks.

Abstract:The radio-over-fiber (RoF) technique has gained a lot of interest recently, as the millimeter-wave signals can be generated and delivered in the optical domain with the advantages of low attenuation, high capacity, and being free from electromagnetic noise interference (EMI). In this paper, we propose and experimentally prove a self-start multi-wavelength laser source based on a distributed feedback laser diode (DFB-LD) for the RoF transport system. The self-start multi-wavelength laser source generates stable laser power with less than 0.18 dB power fluctuation and exhibits good stability. In order to estimate the transmission performance, data is externally modulated onto the multi-wavelength by a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) and transmitted through single-mode fiber (SMF). The experimental result proves that the proposed RoF transport system achieves error-free transmission and clear eye diagrams.

Abstract:This paper demonstrates the feasibility of a simple multigigabit-per-second (Gbps) radio-over-fiber (RoF) system employing multilevel orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) signal modulation at 60 GHz and a single-electrode Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). In this paper, the impact of fiber chromatic dispersion and OFDM beat noise on the performance of the RoF system are investigated by theoretical analysis, VPI WDM-TransmissionMaker simulation and experimental demonstration. A 13.875-Gb/s QPSK OFDM signal occupying the full 7-GHz license-free band at 60 GHz with frequency multiplication for the RoF link is demonstrated. After 3 km of standard single-mode fiber transmission with no dispersion compensation, the power penalty is less than 3 dB.

Abstract:A monolithic optical injection-locked (MOIL) DFB laser with large stable injection locking range is experimentally demonstrated using the side-mode injection locking technique. The low-frequency roll-off in the MOIL DFB laser is suppressed significantly. The relaxation oscillation frequency is measured to be 26.84 GHz and the intrinsic 3-dB response bandwidth is more than 30 GHz, which is about 20 GHz higher than that of the free running DFB laser. The nonlinear distortions, including the 1-dB compression point, second harmonic distortion (2HD) and third-order intermodulation distortion (IMD3), are also suppressed significantly. A simple radio-over-fiber system transmitting 40 Msymbol/s 32-QAM signal with 6 GHz carrier is achieved using the MOIL DFB laser. After 50 km transmission, the average error vector magnitude (EVM) of the whole link is 2.94% in injection locked state, while the EVM in free running DFB laser is 5.25% as a comparison. To our knowledge, this is the first time that the MOIL DFB laser is realized utilizing the side-mode injection locking method.

Abstract:We propose a simple and reconfigured dispersion-tolerant single sideband (SSB) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) radio over fiber (RoF) system enabled by digital signal processing (DSP), one in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) modulator and direct-detection. The generated radio frequency (RF) is based on DSP and the frequency can be flexibly adjusted, which can be employed in the future software-defined radio access network (RAN). Based on our proposed system, we have experimentally demonstrated 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) 21.87-Gb/s 21-GHz and 38-GHz SSB-OFDM RoF signal generation and transmission over 80-km single-mode fiber (SMF), respectively.
