Abstract:We report an experimental demonstration of optical single-sideband (SSB) modulation in 60-GHz radio-over-fiber systems based on an injection-locked distributed-feedback (DFB) laser. Two heterodyning optical modes with 60-GHz spacing are injected into the DFB laser and one of them is used to lock the DFB laser. When the DFB laser is directly modulated, the modulation index of the locked mode is 15 dB larger than that of the unlocked one. The 2.5-Gb/s data transmission at 60 GHz is successfully achieved over 50-km standard single-mode fiber using the proposed SSB scheme.

Abstract:A 60-GHz bidirectional radio-over-fiber (RoF) system using two-carrier-injected distributed feedback (DFB) laser is proposed and demonstrated to realize optical single sideband (SSB) modulation for downlink. An injection-locked Fabry-P'erot laser is also carried out to realize wavelength reuse in uplink. Transmission of 2.5 Gb/s on a 60-GHz carrier for downlink and 622-Mb/s baseband signal for uplink are both successfully demonstrated over 50-km single mode fiber without chromatic dispersion compensation.

Abstract:The seamless integration of broadband optical and wireless access networks is considered to be a promising solution for next generation access networks which will provide high capacity and flexibility with lower cost. In such access networks millimeter wave (mm-wave) radio over fiber (RoF) system is a key enabling technology due to its its large bandwidth and short reach in atmosphere. In this paper, we will discuss some key technologies based on injection locked lasers for mm-wave RoF systems, including all optical generation of mm-wave signal, up- and down-conversion, single sideband modulation, and transmission.

Abstract:By utilizing chirp managed laser (CML) technology to improve the direct modulation performance of deep-submicron slotted single mode FP laser, a dispersion penalty of only 0.4 dB after 100 km SSMF is achieved. The back-to-back penalty is only 1.8 dB compared to a zero chirp LiNbO3 MZ transmitter.

Abstract:A novel method of simultaneous realization of optical carrier-suppression and single-sideband modulation using fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter is presented. In order to enhance transmission performance of radio over fiber links, we use a fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter to filter out one sideband as well as suppress the optical carrier power. The results demonstrate 20.5dB and 14.2dB improvement in the signal noise ratios when 18GHz and 10GHz microwave signals carrying 5Mbit/s quadrature-phase-shift-keyed (QPSK) format data is transmitted over 35 km single mode fiber, respectively.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel full-duplex radio-over-fiber system using a Mach-Zehnder modulator along with fiber Bragg grating to generate an optical millimeter-wave signal that has four times the frequency of the microwave drive signal, which can carry downstream data. Meanwhile centralized lightwave reflect from the fiber Bragg gating is reused to carry upstream data. Since the centralized lightwave with high power is reused, the optical power can be utilized effectively. The experimental results show that the penalty of 2.5 Gb/s upstream data after transmission over 20km single-mode fiber is 1dB at the BER of 10-9. In this system, it can greatly reduce the bandwidth of microwave component and modulator, and the cost of system.

Abstract:A monolithic optical injection-locked (MOIL) DFB laser with large stable injection locking range is experimentally demonstrated using the side-mode injection locking technique. The low-frequency roll-off in the MOIL DFB laser is suppressed significantly. The relaxation oscillation frequency is measured to be 26.84 GHz and the intrinsic 3-dB response bandwidth is more than 30 GHz, which is about 20 GHz higher than that of the free running DFB laser. The nonlinear distortions, including the 1-dB compression point, second harmonic distortion (2HD) and third-order intermodulation distortion (IMD3), are also suppressed significantly. A simple radio-over-fiber system transmitting 40 Msymbol/s 32-QAM signal with 6 GHz carrier is achieved using the MOIL DFB laser. After 50 km transmission, the average error vector magnitude (EVM) of the whole link is 2.94% in injection locked state, while the EVM in free running DFB laser is 5.25% as a comparison. To our knowledge, this is the first time that the MOIL DFB laser is realized utilizing the side-mode injection locking method.

Abstract:A new approach for implementing channelized radio frequency (RF) signals amplification based on actively mode locked laser (MLL) is proposed and demonstrated. The channelized amplification (CA) is based on the mode-locking gain of the fiber ring laser while the frequency of RF signal applied to Mach–Zehnder modulator (MZM) in the fiber laser matching the fundamental or harmonic of the laser cavity mode. The experimental results show that high RF regenerative gain with a maximum 44 dB and high Q factor normally greater than 105 can be achieved with this approach of CA. By electrically tuning the fiber delay line incorporated in the ring laser so as to scan the center frequency of the channelized amplifier, spectrum recognition of quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulated electro-magnetic signal with low power density is successfully implemented. The limit of input power and linear operating dynamic range is also measured and discussed.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a low-cost 40-GHz optical millimeter-wave (mm-wave) generation scheme constructed by the utilization of a frequency-tripling directly modulated Fabry-Perot (FP) laser. The scheme requires neither a strong optical injection power nor an additional optical filter to select the desired optical sidebands. Error-free transmission of the generated 40.2-GHz optical mm-wave carrying 2.5-Gb/s signal over a 20-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) has been experimentally demonstrated. In addition, a performance comparison with the conventional case of an injection-locked FP laser directly driven with a 40.2-GHz RF signal is also simulated, which shows that the presented scheme with highly reduced bandwidth requirement is suitable for mm-wave radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems.

Abstract:A novel scheme to generate an optical millimeter-wave and a full-duplex radio-over-fiber system by using one optical modulator was proposed and experimentally demonstrated.A mixer was employad to generate electrical millime-ter-wave,and single-arm electronic-optical modulator to generate double sideband signals.Then an optical interleaver is employed to separate the spectrum of the double-sideband signals.The separated first-order sidband modes were used to generate optical millimeter-wave with double RF frequency,while the separated optical carrier was reused for upstream connection.The experiment results show that the 40GHz optical millimeter-wave will be generated by 20GHz RF re-source,and 2.5Gbit/s downstream and upstream data can be transmitted over 20km in fiber.

Abstract:A hybrid wireless-over-fiber (WoF) transmission system based on multiple injection-locked Fabry-Perot laser diodes (FP LDs) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Unlike the traditional hybrid WoF transmission systems that require multiple distributed feedback (DFB) LDs to support different kinds of services, the proposed system employs multiple injection-locked FP LDs to provide different kinds of applications. Such a hybrid WoF transmission system delivers downstream intensity-modulated 20-GHz microwave (MW)/60-GHz millimeter-wave (MMW)/550-MHz cable television (CATV) signals and upstream phase-remodulated 20-GHz MW signal. Excellent bit error rate (BER), carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR), composite second-order (CSO), and composite triple-beat (CTB) are observed over a 40-km single-mode fiber (SMF) and a 4-m radio frequency (RF) wireless transport. Such a hybrid WoF transmission system has practical applications for fiber-wireless convergence to provide broadband integrated services, including telecommunication, data communication, and CATV services.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel low-cost radio-over-fiber network architecture with one directly modulated laser and one intensity modulator. By employing an orthogonal frequency division mutiplexing modulation format and frequency quadruple scheme, the bandwidth requirement of the devices and the cost of the system is reduced. Experimental results show that the power penalty for the downlink data after transmission over 20-km single mode optical fiber (SMF)-28 is smaller than 1.3 dB, while for the up-link data, the power penalty after transmission over 20-km SMF-28 is smaller than 0.3 dB.
