Abstract:A method for studying the nature of the dynamic buckling of shallow arch under impact is proposed from viewpoint of nonlinear dynamics and Approximate Inertial manifolds (AIMs), and the post-processed Galerkin's Procedure is used to approximate the nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) and reduce the system from infinite dimension to lower dimension. By this method, the system is studied in the phase space, and the solution of the original system is then projected onto the complete space spanned by the eigenfunctions of the linear operator of the governing equations. With the introduction of an Approximate Inertial Manifolds, the interaction between lower and higher buckling modes or the influence of higher modes on the long-term behaviors, which will be ignored if the traditional Galerkin procedure is used to approach the governing equations, is considered to improve the distance between the original and reduced systems. Nonlinear Galerkin methods attempt to completely describe the dynamics on the attractor of a PDEs with a finite-dimensional dynamical system, and it splits the infinite-dimensional phase space of the PDEs into two complementary subspaces: a finite-dimensional one and its infinite-dimensional complement. The dynamics in this infinite-dimensional space are then assumed to be slaved to the dynamics in the finite-dimensional space via an AIMs. Additionally, an explicit iterative scheme based on post-processed Galerkin method is then presented to approach the Approximate Inertial Manifolds. Based on this method, the multiple equilibrium positions, their stabilities and basins are analyzed to gain a deep insight into the dynamic buckling phenomena. The numerical analysis shows that there exist two focuses and one saddle if the damping is considered. Furthermore, the complex dynamic buckling and snap-through buckling observed in experiments, can be understood in a fundamental sense. It can be concluded that the methods presented are effective for the stability analysis or the dynamic buckling of shallow arch under impact, as well the prediction of load capacity for such structure with high strength-to-weight ratio.
