Abstract:This paper deals with the problem of estimating the parameters for fractional Ornstein–Uhlenbeck processes from discrete observations when the Hurst parameter H is known. Both the drift and the diffusion coefficient estimators of discrete form are obtained based on approximating integrals via Riemann sums with Hurst parameter H∈(1/2,3/4). By adapting the stochastic integral representation to the fractional Brownian motion, these two estimators can be efficiently computed by the use of computer software. Numerical examples are presented to examine the performance of our method. An application to real data is also presented to show how to apply this method in practice.

Abstract:A robust estimator, called simplified MF-estimator, to determine 3-D motion parameters is investigated in the paper. According to the Bayesian decision rule, it partitions a given data set into a subset containing good observations and a subset containing bad observations. The estimator can implement a least-squares estimator on the good data, and down-weight the outliers. To speed convergence of the algorithm, an annealing schedule is used. Finally, a great number of simulations are conducted to show robustness of this algorithm.

Abstract:This work aims to build a bridge between probability methods and finite element methods. It starts with considering probability distributions supported in an interval [a,b], which incorporate the traditional probability distributions defined on the whole real space as limit cases on the one hand, lead to a type of spherical probability models with wide potential applications on the other hand. This type of probability has scaling and symmetry feature, and sufficient conditions under which a density function can be generated through discrete polynomial spectrum are given in this work followed by concrete examples. The density function ρ obtained in this way has the advantage of being positive definite. Computer based numerical simulation shows that the theoretically verified criteria for probability distribution are almost optimal with respect to our testing examples. After the establishment of an approximation theorem in L1 space, we propose a probabilistic Galerkin scheme that can be either continuous or discontinuous, which is potentially useful to asymptotically solve some PDEs on the sphere locally and globally.

Abstract:Measurement precision and relative geometric distribution of common feature points are two factors affecting the parameter estimation and then the visual navigation precision.In view that the relative geometric distribution is easier to be adjusted than the measurement precision,the influence of the relative geometric distribution on the estimation accuracy of translation and rotation parameters is only discussed.Firstly,the nonlinear model and the weighted global least square algorithm are used to solve transformation parameters,and Monte Carlo method is used to summarize the influence of different feature points distribution on parameter estimation accuracy.Then,a method of reconstructing cofactor matrix is proposed,which quantifies the dispersion of coordinate point distribution as its weight for engineering application.Finally,comparison tests are carried out based on actual measurement data,which shows that the proposed method can improve the estimation accuracy of parameters without prior knowledge,where the posterior standard deviation of transformation parameters is reduced by at least 6.7％.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new approach to estimate curvature information of point-sampled surfaces. We estimate curvatures in terms of the extremal points of a one-dimensional energy function for discrete surfels (points equipped with normals) and a multi-dimensional energy function for discrete unstructured point clouds. Experimental results indicate that our approaches can estimate curvatures faithfully, and reflect the subtle curvature variations. Some applications for curvature information, such as surface simplification and feature extraction for point-sampled surfaces, are given.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the Dirichlet problem of the three-dimensional Laplace equation in the unit ball with a shrinking hole. The problem typically arises from homogenization problems in domains perforated with tiny holes. We give an almost complete description concerning the uniform $W^{1,p}$ estimates: for any $3/2<p<3$ there hold the uniform $W^{1,p}$ estimates; for any $1<p<3/2$ or $3<p<\infty $, there are counterexamples indicating that the uniform $W^{1,p}$ estimates do not hold. The results can be generalized to higher dimensions.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new estimator of the change point in variance of measurement errors in terms of U -statistics based on characteristic functions. We also investigate the strong consistency and convergence rates of the estimator. In addition, we develop the asymptotic distribution of the change point estimator under local alternative hypothesis, which is a two-side Brownian motion with a drift. Simulation results show that our estimator is significantly better than the estimator posed in [C.L. Dong et al., An estimate of a change point in variance of measurement errors and its convergence rate, Commun. Stat., Theory Methods , 44(4):790–797, 2015].

Some nonparametric procedures to detect the change point τ are proposed by means of CUSUM and Brownian sheet. Abstract:Let $\{X_{i}, i\in J\}$ be a family of locally dependent non-negative integer-valued random variables with finite expectations and variances. We consider the sum $W=\sum_{i\in J}X_i$ and use Stein's method to establish general upper error bounds for the total variation distance $d_{TV}(W, M)$, where $M$ represents a three-parameter random variable. As a direct consequence, we obtain a discretized normal approximation for $W$. As applications, we study in detail four well-known examples, which are counting vertices of all edges point inward, birthday problem, counting monochromatic edges in uniformly colored graphs, and triangles in the Erdős-Rényi random graph. Through delicate analysis and computations, we obtain sharper upper error bounds than existing results.

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel Poisson-unit-Weibull (PUW) distribution, which is defined on a unit domain and characterized by three parameters. The PUW distribution is capable of accommodating diverse non-monotone failure rates. The paper explores several significant statistical properties of the model, including the explicit closed-form expressions for the moments, quantile function, and Shannon entropy. The parameters of the PUW distribution are estimated using maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) and Bayes estimation with a square error loss function. The performance of these estimation methods is evaluated through Monte Carlo simulation studies. Furthermore, the paper discusses the practical aspects of the PUW-quantile regression model and its MLE, employing residual analysis in simulation studies. The flexibility of the PUW and PUW-quantile regression model is demonstrated through six real-life applications, showcasing their superior performance when compared to other popularly used models.

Abstract:In directional statistics, the von Mises-Fisher (vMF) distribution is one of the most basic and popular probability distributions for data on the unit hypersphere. Recently, the spherical normal (SN) distribution was proposed as an intrinsic counterpart to the vMF distribution by replacing the standard Euclidean norm with the great-circle distance, which is the shortest path joining two points on the unit sphere. We propose numerical approaches for parameter estimation since there are no analytic formula available. We consider the estimation problems in a general setting where non-negative weights are assigned to observations. This leads to a more interesting contribution for model-based clustering on the unit hypersphere by finite mixture model with SN distributions. We validate efficiency of optimization-based estimation procedures and effectiveness of SN mixture model using simulated and real data examples.

Abstract:We propose a new approach for estimating the parameters of a probability distribution. It consists on combining two new methods of estimation. The first is based on the definition of a new distance measuring the difference between variations of two distributions on a finite number of points from their support and on using this measure for estimation purposes by the method of minimum distance. For the second method, given an empirical discrete distribution, we build up an auxiliary discrete theoretical distribution having the same support of the first and depending on the same parameters of the parent distribution of the data from which the empirical distribution emanated. We estimate then the parameters from the empirical distribution by the usual statistical methods. In practice, we propose to compute the two estimations, the second based on maximum likelihood principle of known theoretical properties, and the first being as a control of the effectiveness of the obtained estimation, and for which we prove the convergence in probability, so we have also a criterion on the quality of the information contained in the observations. We apply the approach to truncated or grouped and censored data situations to give the flavour on the effectiveness of the approach. We give also some interesting perspectives of the approach including model selection from truncated data, estimation of the initial trial value in the celebrate EM algorithm in the case of truncation and merged normal populations, a test of goodness of fit based on the new distance, quality of estimations and data.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose methods for the estimation of parameters for the three-parameter Reflected Weibull distribution. The Moment estimator , Maximum likelihood estimator and Location and Scale Parameters free maximum likelihood estimator. The Location and Scale Parameters free maximum likelihood estimator is based on a data transformation, which avoids the problem of unbounded likelihood estimator. Through Mont Carlo simulations, we further show that the Location and Scale Parameters free maximum likelihood estimator performs better than methods moment and maximum likelihood estimator in terms of bias and root mean squared error. Finally, two examples based on real data sets are presented to illustrate methods.

Fuzzy Optimization and Decision Making

Abstract:Since the concept of uncertain fractional differential equations was proposed, its wide range of applications have urged us to consider parameter estimation for uncertain fractional differential equations. In this paper, based on the definition of Liu process, we construct a function of unknown parameters which follows a standard normal uncertainty distribution. Then the method of moments is used to build a system of equations whose solutions are the estimated values of unknown parameters. After that, an algorithm of parameter estimation for a special uncertain fractional differential equation is proposed. Finally, the algorithm is applied to two numerical examples and the acceptability of the estimated parameters is proved by using uncertain hypothesis test.

Abstract:In many social science and natural science research, researchers are often faced with the problems such as: the system have no enough system distinctive features, the probability distribution unknown and the number of data very small. It is hard to use statistical theory in these researches. A novel method called non-statistical method is proposed in this paper to obtain more characteristics and further information in the system. The method permits the probability distribution unknown and the number of data very small, because of some deficiency of classical statistics in system and information science. In virtue of the special strategy of data processing, more characteristics and further information in the system could be obtained using this method. Some basic concepts, characteristics and elements of non-statistical method including point estimation, interval estimation, optimum level, practicable interval and systemic characteristic mapping etc, are also recommended. The validity of this method is examined by some measurement cases and practical engineering examples.

Abstract:Parameterization is a crucial step in curve reconstruction from unorganized points.An algorithm for parameterizing planar unorganized points with noises was described.In the algorithm,the minimum spanning tree of the Delaunay triangulation of the points was constructed first.Then,the longest path of the minimum spanning tree was parameterized.Finally,the other points which were not on the longest path were parameterized by projecting them onto the longest path.Some procedures were discussed to improve the accuracy of the algorithm.As an application,an example of disk B-spline fitting was provided.
