Abstract:In this article, the two-step method for prediction, which was proposed by Li et al. (2012), is extended for modelling grouped data, which besides having near-collinear explanatory variables, also having different mean structure, i.e. the mean structure of some part of the data is more complex than other parts. In the first step, inspired by partial least squares regression (PLS), the information for explanatory variables is summarized by a multilinear model with Krylov structured design matrices, which for different groups have different size. The multilinear model is similar to the classical growth curve model except that the design matrices are unknown and are functions of the dispersion matrix. Under such a multilinear model, natural estimators for mean and dispersion matrices are proposed. In the second step, the response is predicted through a conditional predictor where the estimators obtained in the first step are utilized.

Abstract:In this letter, the problem of estimating an unknown deterministic parameter is studied, where each sensor acquires a noisy version of the signal and the data at fusion center are unlabeled. Two scenarios are studied: one in which each sensor uses analog communication to transmit its observations with different channel coefficients, and the other in which each sensor uses a different threshold to quantize the noisy signal with a transition matrix describing the channel. Sufficient conditions are provided, under which maximum likelihood (ML) estimators can be found in polynomial time, and numerical simulations are conducted to evaluate performances of ML estimators.

Abstract:This article deals with the problem of estimating all the unknown parameters in the drift fractional Brownian motion with discretely sampled data. The estimation procedure is built upon the marriage of the variation method and the ergodic theory. The strong consistencies of these estimators are provided. Moreover, our method and two existing approaches are compared based on the computational running time and the accuracy of estimation via simulation studies. We also apply the proposed method to the real high-frequency financial data within a window of 4 h in the trading day from the Chinese mainland stock market.

Abstract:Fractional Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process is an extended model of the traditional Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process that provides some useful models for many physical and financial phenomena demonstrating long-range dependencies. Obviously, if some phenomenon can be modeled by fractional Ornstein–Uhlenbeck processes, the problem of estimating unknown parameters in these models is of great interest, especially, in discrete time. This paper deals with the problem of estimating the unknown parameters in fractional Ornstein–Uhlenbeck processes. The estimation procedure is built upon the marriage of the quadratic variation method and the maximum likelihood approach. The consistency of these estimators is also provided. Simulation outcomes illustrate that our methodology is efficient and reliable.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider estimating the parameters of univariate α -stable distributions and their mixtures. First, using a Gaussian kernel density distribution estimator, we propose an estimation method based on the characteristic function. The optimal bandwidth parameter was selected using a plug-in method. We highlight another estimation procedure for the Maximum Likelihood framework based on the False position algorithm to find a numerical root of the log-likelihood through the score functions. For mixtures of α -stable distributions, the EM algorithm and the Bayesian estimation method have been modified to propose an efficient and valuable tool for parameter estimation. The proposed methods can be generalised to multiple mixtures, although we have limited the mixture study to two components. A simulation study is carried out to evaluate the performance of our methods, which are then applied to real data. Our results appear to accurately estimate mixtures of α -stable distributions. Applications concern the estimation of the number of replicates in the Mayotte COVID-19 dataset and the distribution of the N-acetyltransferase activity of the Bechtel et al. data for a urinary caffeine metabolite implicated in carcinogens. We compare the proposed methods, together with a detailed discussion. We conclude with the limitations of this study, together with other forthcoming work and a future implementation of an R package or Python library for the proposed methods in data modelling.

Abstract:Parameter estimations and hypothesis were studied on Pareto distribution under missing data samples. Maximum likelihood estimation of the shape parameters was discussed. The consistency and asymptotic normality of the estimators were proved. Moreover, the difference of the confidence interval and hypothesis test between the two general shape parameters was given. Finally, Monte Carlo simulation was used to illustrate the excellent per-formance of the estimator.

Abstract:We propose a new approach for estimating the parameters of a probability distribution. It consists on combining two new methods of estimation. The first is based on the definition of a new distance measuring the difference between variations of two distributions on a finite number of points from their support and on using this measure for estimation purposes by the method of minimum distance. For the second method, given an empirical discrete distribution, we build up an auxiliary discrete theoretical distribution having the same support of the first and depending on the same parameters of the parent distribution of the data from which the empirical distribution emanated. We estimate then the parameters from the empirical distribution by the usual statistical methods. In practice, we propose to compute the two estimations, the second based on maximum likelihood principle of known theoretical properties, and the first being as a control of the effectiveness of the obtained estimation, and for which we prove the convergence in probability, so we have also a criterion on the quality of the information contained in the observations. We apply the approach to truncated or grouped and censored data situations to give the flavour on the effectiveness of the approach. We give also some interesting perspectives of the approach including model selection from truncated data, estimation of the initial trial value in the celebrate EM algorithm in the case of truncation and merged normal populations, a test of goodness of fit based on the new distance, quality of estimations and data.

Abstract:In many social science and natural science research, researchers are often faced with the problems such as: the system have no enough system distinctive features, the probability distribution unknown and the number of data very small. It is hard to use statistical theory in these researches. A novel method called non-statistical method is proposed in this paper to obtain more characteristics and further information in the system. The method permits the probability distribution unknown and the number of data very small, because of some deficiency of classical statistics in system and information science. In virtue of the special strategy of data processing, more characteristics and further information in the system could be obtained using this method. Some basic concepts, characteristics and elements of non-statistical method including point estimation, interval estimation, optimum level, practicable interval and systemic characteristic mapping etc, are also recommended. The validity of this method is examined by some measurement cases and practical engineering examples.

Abstract:Based on the existing moment-type method, the method windowing the empirical characteristic function (ECF) and a new method estimating parameters of symmetric a stable and Gaussian distributions were proposed. The windowed ECF approximates the characteristic function nearer than ECF itself. The new parameter estimation method overcomes the deficiency of the existing moment-type method that t of ECF must be chosen close to 1, at the same time, it avoids solving complicated equation. The simulations show that the new method is robust.

Abstract:The generalized Pareto distribution(GPD) is one of the most important distribution in statistics analysis that has been widely used in finance,insurance,hydrology and meteorology applications and so on.While traditional estimation methods,such as maximum likelihood(ML),methods of moments(MOM) and probability weighted moments (PWM) methods have been extensively applied,the use of these methods are often restricted. Alternative approaches(e.g.,generalized probability weighted moments,L-moments and LH-moments) exist but they use complete or non-censored samples.However,censored samples are often encountered in hydrology and meteorology fields.In this article,we propose a computationally easy method from censored data for fitting the GPD,which is resistant against extremely small or large outliers,i.e.,they will be robust with the lower and upper breakdown points.This method is based on probability weighted moments.Firstly,we solve shape parameter estimator which has high estimated precision,then the location and scale parameters are given for the GPD.Simulation studies show that the proposed method performs well compared to traditional techniques.
Approximate Marginal Likelihood Inference in Mixed Models for Grouped Data

Abstract:A method is introduced for approximate marginal likelihood inference via adaptive Gaussian quadrature in mixed models with a single grouping factor. The core technical contribution is an algorithm for computing the exact gradient of the approximate log marginal likelihood. This leads to efficient maximum likelihood via quasi-Newton optimization that is demonstrated to be faster than existing approaches based on finite-differenced gradients or derivative-free optimization. The method is specialized to Bernoulli mixed models with multivariate, correlated Gaussian random effects; here computations are performed using an inverse log-Cholesky parameterization of the Gaussian density that involves no matrix decomposition during model fitting, while Wald confidence intervals are provided for variance parameters on the original scale. Simulations give evidence of these intervals attaining nominal coverage if enough quadrature points are used, for data comprised of a large number of very small groups exhibiting large between-group heterogeneity. In contrast, the Laplace approximation is shown to give especially poor coverage and high bias for data comprised of a large number of small groups. Adaptive quadrature mitigates this, and the methods in this paper improve the computational feasibility of this more accurate method. Abstract:This paper is concerned with the simulation and parameters estimation of IID random series subject to general alpha-stable distribution (alpha S) (including both symmetrical and skewed cases). Based on the discussion on two parameterizations of alpha S, a method of generating general Alpha Stable random variable is proposed for the standard parameterization. The proposed method overcomes the location error by Chambers's method in the skewed case. In the existing literature, the issue of parameters estimation has been studied. However, little work has been reported on the estimation problem of location parameter mu in the skewed case; such an important parameter has been assumed as zero in most literatures. In this paper, we develop a new technique to estimate mu of alpha S using the deskewed transform and propose an improved estimator for skewness parameter beta by a centered transform. Combined with the estimations of beta and mu in the case of alpha = 1 by Empirical Character Function (ECF) method, finally, a hybrid estimation scheme is proposed. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed hybrid method performs well on a wide region of alpha in estimating beta and mu.

Abstract:Motivated by different groups containing different group information under the heteroscedastic error structure, we propose the groupwise scaled envelope model that is invariable to scale changes and is permissible for distinct regression coefficients and the heteroscedastic error structure across groups. It retains the potential of the scaled envelope methods to keep the scale invariant and allows for both different regression coefficients and different error structures for diverse groups. Further, we demonstrate the maximum likelihood estimators and its theoretical properties including parameter identifiability, asymptotic distribution and consistency of the groupwise scaled envelope estimator. Lastly, simulation studies and a real-data example demonstrate the advantages of the groupwise scaled envelope estimators, including a comparison with the standard model estimators, groupwise envelope estimators, scaled envelope estimators and separate scaled envelope estimators.

Abstract:Many mechanical components exhibit more than one failure mode; and not all components under study have been exposed to similar operating conditions. For example, components may have been used in different operating environments or there may be differences in design and/or material. In these cases, life time data of components would not fall on a straight line on a Weibull probability paper (WPP), that is, the standard 2-parameter Weibull distribution is not an appropriate model. It has been recognized that Mixed Weibull distribution can be used to fit such data properly. However, a mixed Weibull distribution involves more unknown parameters; and due to the difficulty of estimation of these parameters, mixed models have not been widely used. In this paper, a mixed model involving two Weibull distributions is considered. We establish parameter estimation methods for the mixed Weibull model using Nonlinear Least Squares (NLS) theory; and quasi-Newton method is used to solve the optimization problem. A numerical example is given to compare the proposed method with the conventional graphical method.
