Abstract:The synthetic dimension, a research topic of both fundamental significance and practical applications, has been attracting increasing attention in recent years. In this paper, we propose a theoretical framework to construct arbitrary synthetic dimensions, or N-boson synthetic lattices, using multiple bosons on one-dimensional lattices. We show that a one-dimensional lattice hosting N indistinguishable bosons can be mapped to a single boson on an N-dimensional lattice with high symmetry. Band structure analyses on this N-dimensional lattice can then be mathematically performed to predict the existence of exotic eigenstates and the motion of N-boson wave packets. As illustrative examples, we demonstrate the edge states in two-boson Su-Schrieffer-Heeger synthetic lattices without interactions, interface states in two-boson Su-Schrieffer-Heeger synthetic lattices with interactions, and weakly bound triplon states in three-boson tight-binding synthetic lattices with interactions. The interface states and weakly bound triplon states have not been thoroughly understood in previous research. Our proposed theoretical framework hence provides an interesting perspective to explore the multiboson dynamics on lattices with boson-boson interactions, and opens up a future avenue in the field of multiboson manipulation in quantum engineering.
Two-species Hard-Core Bosons on the Triangular Lattice: A Quantum Monte Carlo Study

Abstract:Using worm-type quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate bosonic mixtures on the triangular lattice of two species of bosons, which interact via nearest-neighbour intraspecies ($V$) and onsite interspecies ($U$) repulsions. For the case of symmetric hopping amplitude ($t_A/V=t_B/V$) and $U/V=1$, we determine a rich ground-state phase diagram that contains double solid, double superfluid (2SF), supersolid (SS), solid-superfluid (Solid-SF) and counterflow supersolid (CSS) states. The SS, Solid-SF and CSS states exhibit spontaneous symmetry breaking among the three sublattices of the triangular lattice and between the two species, which leads to nonzero crystalline density wave order in each species. We furthermore show that the CSS and the SS states are present for $t_A/V \neq t_B/V$, and the latter even survives up to $t_A/V \rightarrow \infty$ or $t_B/V \rightarrow \infty$ limit. The effects induced by the variation of $U/V$ and by the imbalance of particle numbers of the two species are also explored.

Abstract:Bosonization in a theory with four-fermion interaction of Nambu-Jona-Lasinio type with additional U(N) symmetry is studied. It is demonstrated that bosonization is not uniquely determined by the interaction terms due to Fierz identities. Effective action including both fermions and composite fields is constructed. R-operation renormalization scheme is developed for the effective action. A generalization of bosonization transformation called composite fields formalism is proposed and demonstrated to be applicable to any field theory. Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with three-fermion composite fields is studied as an example. Fierz identities for sixth-order combinations of fermions are derived.

Abstract:The dynamics of many-body fermionic systems are important in problems ranging from catalytic reactions at electrochemical surfaces to transport through nanojunctions and offer a prime target for quantum computing applications. Here, we derive the set of conditions under which fermionic operators can be exactly replaced by bosonic operators that render the problem amenable to a large toolbox of dynamical methods while still capturing the correct dynamics of n -body operators. Importantly, our analysis offers a simple guide on how one can exploit these simple maps to calculate nonequilibrium and equilibrium single- and multi-time correlation functions essential in describing transport and spectroscopy. We use this to rigorously analyze and delineate the applicability of simple yet effective Cartesian maps that have been shown to correctly capture the correct fermionic dynamics in select models of nanoscopic transport. We illustrate our analytical results with exact simulations of the resonant level model. Our work provides new insights as to when one can leverage the simplicity of bosonic maps to simulate the dynamics of many-electron systems, especially those where an atomistic representation of nuclear interactions becomes essential.

Bosonic Holes in Quadratic Bosonic Systems

Abstract:The concept of electron holes plays a significant role in condensed matter physics. Here we develop the concept of bosonic holes, which exhibit negative particle excitations, in quadratic bosonic systems. Unlike electron holes, the Fock states of bosonic holes are biorthogonal, and their excitation can be interpreted as removing particles from a mean-particle number with a mean field background. Furthermore, we find that quadratic bosonic Hamiltonians related by non unitary and local particle hole transformation possess the same locality structure and spectral properties in different spaces, reflecting the PH duality. Based on this, we study the generation of PH entanglement in two mode cases and the PH Aharonov Bohm effect in the three mode case, which results in a PH chiral flow with time reversal symmetry breaking. Our findings provide a new way to understand and explore unusual physical phenomena in particle non conserving and non Hermitian systems.

Abstract:An extended structure of nonlinear SO(3) algebra is put forward. The nonlinear SO(3) algebras of vector and quadrupole types are realized respectively in the framework of Schwingrer's coupled boson representation of angular momentum theory. Enhancement of boson superfluidity in a one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixture

Abstract: We examine the effect of boson-fermion interaction in a one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixture by using the density matrix renormalization group method. We show that the boson superfluidity is enhanced by fermions for a weak boson-fermion coupling at an approximate integer boson filling factor (e.g., $0.935\le \rho_b \le 1.0$), and this enhancement is produced both in a fermion metallic state and in a fermion insulating state. A metal-insulator phase transition of fermions induced by boson-fermion interaction is observed even though there is no fermion-fermion interaction in the parent Hamiltonian. Furthermore, we find that the boson superfluid order and density wave order can coexist in a deep fermion Mott region. All these features could be measured in future experiments and open up the possibility of detecting the new physical effect in the Bose-Fermi mixture.

Abstract:The su(2)-algebraic many-fermion model is formulated so as to be able to get the unified understanding of the structures of three simple models: the single-level pairing, the isoscalar proton-neutron pairing and the two-level Lipkin model. Basic idea is to introduce an auxiliary su(2)-algebra, any generator of which commutes with any generator of the starting su(2)-algebra. With the aid of this algebra, the minimum weight states are completely determined in a simple forms. Further, concerning the two algebras, boson realization is presented. Through this formulation, the behavior of the total fermion in the Lipkin model is notably different of those in the other two models. As supplementary problem, the boson-fermion realization and the Lipkin model in the isovector pairing model are investigated.

Boson-anyon-fermion mapping in one dimension: Constructing anyonic molecule and superfluidity in a spin-$1/2$ Fermi gas

Abstract:We establish an exact mapping between identical particles in one dimension with arbitrary exchange statistics, including bosons, anyons and fermions, provided they share the same scattering length. This boson-anyon-fermion mapping facilitates the construction of anyons from a linear superposition of spatially symmetric and anti-symmetric states. We demonstrate this in a spin-1/2 Fermi gas with coexistent s- and p-wave interactions, where both types of bound states can be supported by manipulating spin channels. A suitable symmetry-breaking field then hybridizes these states to form anyonic molecules. The condensation of these molecules in a many-body system leads to anyonic superfluidity, characterized by fractional statistics upon spin exchange within a Cooper pair. These anyonic states can be detected through asymmetric momentum distributions with a chiral $k^{-3}$ tail for each spin at high momentum. Our results propose a convenient route for engineering fractional statistics and associated intriguing phases in the platform of ultracold atoms.

Abstract:We construct finite Dyson boson-fermion mappings of general collective algebras extended by single-fermion operators. A key element in the construction is the implementation of a similarity transformation which transforms boson-fermion images obtained directly from the supercoherent state method. In addition to the general construction, we give detailed applications to SO(2N), SU(l+1), SO(5), and SO(8) algebras.

Aufbau Principle for Non-Hermitian Systems

Abstract:We develop a generalized Aufbau principle for non-Hermitian systems that allows for building up the configurations of indistinguishable particles. The Aufbau rule of non-Hermitian systems is unexpectedly shown to be identical to that developed in Hermitian systems when the real parts of the complex energy levels are considered. We derive full many-body energy spectra of the fermionic and bosonic Hatano-Nelson models as examples by filling single-particle energy levels in the momentum space. For open boundary conditions, we show that many-body non-Hermitian skin effects persist in all many-body eigenstates for both fermions and bosons. Furthermore, we find surprisingly that the ground state of bosons is an anomalous Bose-Einstein condensation with all of the particles simultaneously localizing in both the real and momentum space beyond the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. For periodic boundary conditions, we show that hard-core bosons cannot be mapped to fermions. This work establishes a general framework for understanding the many-body physics of non-Hermitian systems, revealing rich unique non-Hermitian many-body physics.

Condensation of Composite Bosonic Trions in Interacting Bose-Fermi Mixtures

Abstract:We reveal a quantum coherent state of composite bosonic trions, where paired fermions further pair with bosons, in a one-dimensional Bose-Fermi system featuring onsite boson-fermion attraction and pair hopping of fermions. Extensive density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations show that the quasi-condensation of the composite trions is established by algebraic decaying correlations of trions, gapped single-particle excitations, and suppressed correlations of fermion pairs. Negative binding energy also indicates a strong tendency to form trions. Furthermore, we conduct a phenomenological analysis based on a mean-field variational ansatz to interpret the emergence of composite trions. Additionally, We discuss feasible experimental methods for realizing this novel phase of matter in ultracold atom experiments.

Abstract:"What is the difference between space and time?" is an ancient question that remains a matter of intense debate. In Newtonian mechanics time is absolute, while in Einstein's theory of relativity time and space combine into Minkowski spacetime. Here, we firstly propose Minkowski fermions in 2+1 dimensional Minkowski spacetime which have two space-like and one time-like momentum axes. These quasiparticles can be further classified as Klein-Gordon fermions and Dirac-Minkowski fermions according to the linearly and quadratically dispersing excitations. Realization of Dirac-Minkowski quasiparticles requires systems with particular topological nodal-line band degeneracies, such as hyperbolic nodal lines or coplanar band crossings. With the help of first-principles calculations we find that novel massless Dirac-Minkowski fermions are realized in a metastable bulk boron allotrope, Pnnm-B16.

Abstract:The idea of statistical transmutation plays a crucial role in descriptions of the fractional quantum Hall effect. However, a recently conjectured duality between a critical boson and a massless two-component Dirac fermion extends this notion to gapless systems. This duality sheds light on highly nontrivial problems such as the half-filled Landau level, the superconductor-insulator transition, and surface states of strongly coupled topological insulators. Although this boson-fermion duality has undergone many consistency checks, it has remained unproven. We describe the duality in a nonperturbative fashion using an exact UV mapping of partition functions on a 3D Euclidean lattice.
Exact lattice bosonization of finite N matrix quantum mechanics and c = 1

Abstract:We describe a new exact lattice bosonization of matrix quantum mechanics (equivalently of non-relativistic fermions) that is valid for arbitrary rank N of the matrix, based on an exact operator bosonization introduced earlier in [1]. The trace identities are automatically incorporated in this formalism. The finite number N of fermions is reflected in the finite number N of bosonic oscillators, or equivalently to the finite number N of lattice points. The fermion Hamiltonian is exactly mappable to a bosonic Hamiltonian. At large N, the latter becomes local and corresponds to the lattice version of a relativistic boson Hamiltonian, with a lattice spacing of order 1/N. The finite lattice spacing leads to a finite entanglement entropy (EE) of the bosonic theory, which reproduces the finite EE of the fermionic theory. Such a description is not available in the standard bosonization in terms of fermion density fluctuations on the Fermi surface, which does not have a built-in short distance cut-off (see, however, [2]). The bosonic lattice is equipped with a geometry determined by the matrix potential or equivalently by the shape of the Fermi surface. Our bosonization also works in the double scaled c=1 model, where the bosonic EE again turns out to be finite, with the short distance cut-off turning as g_s l_s, and reproduces the matrix result. Once again, such a short distance cut-off cannot appear in the conventional dual of c=1 in terms of the 2D string ``tachyon'', where the expected short distance scale is l_s. This indicates our bosonization as a possibly different dual description to the c=1 matrix model appropriate for ``local physics'' like quantum entanglement, by contrast with the conventional duality to the eigenvalue density which works well for asymptotic observables like S-matrices. We briefly discuss possible relation of our bosonization to D0 branes.

Abstract:Nonlocal interaction between ultracold atoms trapped in optical lattices can give rise to interesting quantum many-body phenomena. However, its realization usually demands unconventional techniques, for example the artificial gauge fields or higher-orbit Feshbach resonances, and is not highly controllable. Here, we propose a valid and feasible scheme for realizing a tunable finite-range interaction for spinless fermions immersed into the bath of bosons. The strength of the effective interaction for the fermionic subsystem is artificially tunable by manipulating bosons, ranging from the repulsive to attractive regime. And the interaction distance is locked to the hopping of bosons, making the finite-range interaction perfectly clean for the fermionic subsystem. Specifically we find that, by introducing an additional staggered hopping of bosons, the proposal is readily applied to search the Majorana corner modes in such a spinless system, without implementation of complex artificial gauge fields, which is totally distinct from existing results reported in spinful systems. Therefore this scheme provides a potential platform for exploring the unconventional topological superfluids and other nontrivial phases induced by long-range interactions in ultracold atoms.
Generalized boson and fermion operators with a maximal total occupation property

Abstract:We propose a new generalization of the standard (anti-)commutation relations for creation and annihilation operators of bosons and fermions. These relations preserve the usual symmetry properties of bosons and fermions. Only the standard (anti-)commutator relation involving one creation and one annihilation operator is deformed by introducing fractional coefficients, containing a positive integer parameter $p$. The Fock space is determined by the classical definition. The new relations are chosen in such a way that the total occupation number in the system has the maximum value $p$. From the actions of creation and annihilation operators in the Fock space, a group theoretical framework is determined, and from here the correspondence with known particle statistics is established.
