Abstract:The safety and stability of tailing ponds plays an important role in the mining production and environmental protection in China. This paper was based on the results of nationwide investigations of metal and nonmetal mines conducted by State Administration of Work Safety (SAWS), and summarized the distribution features of China's tailing ponds and problems with safety management. Based on the analyses of current laws, codes and standards on the tailing ponds' safety of China, this paper researched the current status of risk management, safety assessment methods and technical research status of tailing ponds, and also discussed the safety conditions of China's tailing ponds in the future. The research indicates that safety conditions of China's tailing ponds safety will be significantly improved by China government.

Abstract:Tailings are one of the primary solid wastes of mining industry. They are made of fine-grained particles of the parent rock from which the ore is extracted by crushing, grinding, and other milling processes. Furthermore, volumetrically, tailings impoundments are among the largest structures created by human kind. The safety of the tailing reservoir is one of the major concerns. The characteristics of tailings are a result of the composition of the parent rock and the method of ore processing. In this paper, the two types of tailings from an iron mine in South China were systematically investigated in terms of their mechanical characteristics including the physical features and dynamic response. The deformation of tailing reservoir in design was evaluated considering the earthquake load. This study provides a scientific basis for optimal design and safe operation of the future tailings storage facility.

Abstract:The production process of antimony produces a large amount of solid waste, such as waste rock in mining, tailings in the beneficiation, metallurgical slag in the smelting, and so on. At present, most of these solid wastes are currently in storage, and the storage of a large amount of solid wastes is not only harmful to the local ecological environment but also a waste of resources. In view of this situation, this paper will take antimony tailings and metallurgical slag as examples and summarize them according to their different treatment methods. The comprehensive utilization of antimony tailings is mainly recovering metals by beneficiation and metallurgy and using antimony tailings as building materials and underground filling materials, while the comprehensive utilization method of antimony metallurgical slag is mainly the recovery of valuable metals by pyrometallurgy or hydrometallurgy or the stabilization technology. This paper summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of different treatment methods and puts forward the prospect of future research directions for the treatment of different metallurgical slags and tailings.

Abstract:The harm of the sand tailings and the present conditions of its control in Jinchuan Copper-Nickel Mine were analyzed.From the view point of recycle economy,a mode of recycle economy for the utilization of the tailings as resource is proposed based on the experimental research.It simulates the geological weathering process in the earth surface system to reduce the waste solid and liquid pollutants in a large amount and meanwhile produce high value-added product such as amorphous silicon dioxide(white carbon),nano-scaled magnesium hydroxide and iron hydroxide by making use of the self-reaction between the tailings and AMD.This self-reaction technology between tailings and acidic waste water can be used not only to comprehensively solve the problem of tailings and acidic water pollution in Jinchuan Mine,but also to recover the valuable components and obtain high value-added products so as to attain the aim of treating wastes by wastes,reducing consumption,increasing productivity and benefits,decreasing waste discharge and disposal and preventing environment pollution.

Abstract:Gold tailings are characterized by low-grade, complex composition, fine embedded particle size, environmental pollution, and large land occupation. This paper describes the mineralogical properties of gold tailings, including chemical composition, phase composition, particle size distribution, and microstructure; summarizes the recycling and utilization of components such as mica, feldspar, and valuable metals in gold tailings; reviews harmless treatment measures for harmful elements in gold tailings; and adumbrated the research progress of gold tailings in the application fields of building materials, ceramics, and glass materials. Based on these discussions, a new technology roadmap that combines multistage magnetic separation and cemented filling is proposed for the clean utilization of all components of gold tailings.

Abstract:Development of mineral resources and the increasing mining waste emissions have created a series of environmental and health-related issues. Nowadays, the ecological restoration of mining tailings has become one of the urgent tasks for mine workers and environmental engineers all over the world. Aim of the present paper is to highlight the previous restoration techniques and the challenges encountered during the restoration of mine tailings. As it is a common practice that, before restoring of tailings, the site should be evaluated carefully. Studies showed that the mine tailings’ adverse properties, including excessive heavy metal concentration, acidification, improper pH value, salinization and alkalization, poor physical structure and inadequate nutrition, etc., are the major challenges of their restoration. Generally, four restoration technologies, including physical, chemical, phytoremediation, and bioremediation, are used to restore the mining tailings. The working mechanism, advantages, and disadvantages of these techniques are described in detail. In addition, selection of the suitable restoration techniques can largely be carried out by considering both the economic factors and time required. Furthermore, the ecosystem restoration is perceived to be a more promising technology for mine tailings. Therefore, this extensive review can act as a valuable reference for the researchers involved in mine tailing restoration.

Abstract:Underground mining is the primary method to obtain economically valuable minerals, but it usually brings a large number of goafs (mined-out voids) and large quantities of waste tailings. The gradual accumulation of mine tailings has attracted worldwide attention because of its occupation and acidification of land, and a large number of goafs often lead to stope instability and ground subsidence. To solve the waste tailing accumulation and ground subsidence, a cleaner mining method—cemented tailing backfilling (CTB)—for filling mining goafs by tailings was proposed. Firstly, the volume of the goafs was detected, and the hydraulic-mechanical coupling properties of the original tailings were tested. Then, a reasonable mix proportion of tailings, binder, and water was determined based on laboratory experiments. Finally, the filling pipe network and filling system were designed according to the actual situation of the mine. This paper provides an environmental and economic method for treating tailing accumulation and preventing ground subsidence. At the same time, it was demonstrated in Linglong Gold Mine (LLGM), and a plan which allows 15.8 service years of nondischarge of tailings was designed in LLGM.

Abstract:A substantial amount of bauxite tailings (BTs) at abandoned mine sites have been stored in waste reservoirs for long periods, leading to significant land occupation and environmental degradation. Although many studies of the resource utilization of BTs were conducted to address this challenge, there is still a lack of efforts to systematically review the state of the art in BTs. In the present paper, a systematic literature review was carried out to summarize and analyze the properties, treatment, and resource utilization of BTs. Physical characteristics and the mineral and chemical composition of BTs are introduced. The efficacy of physical, chemical, and microbial treatment methods for BTs in terms of dehydration are outlined, and their respective benefits and limitations are discussed. Moreover, the extraction process of valuable elements (e.g., Si, Al, Fe, Li, Na, Nd, etc.) from BTs is examined, and the diverse applications of BTs in adsorption materials, ceramic materials, cementitious materials, lightweight aggregates, foamed mixture lightweight soil, among others, are studied. Finally, an efficient and smart treatment strategy for BTs was proposed. The findings of the present review provide a scientific basis and reference for future research focusing on the treatment and resource utilization of BTs.

Abstract:The mining industry produces a large amount of stone waste and tailings, which poses a threat to the environment. Dumping is the most common means of disposing of this industrial waste, contributing to soil degradation and water pollution with the acquisition of valuable land. Fortunately, it can be recycled in a variety of technologies, including the promising geopolymerization technology, which turns waste into value. This review paper presents recent advances in the production of mine tailings-based geopolymer composites from industrial waste as a potential sustainable building material. This article also provides in-depth studies on the behaviors and characteristics of mine tailings composites utilized in geopolymer production, such as physical properties, mechanical properties, durability properties, microstructural properties, thermal properties, leaching behavior, and potential applications. Besides, study developments are moving towards a comprehensive understanding of the environmental footprints and economic benefits of mine tailings-based geopolymer composites for building applications utilizing mine tailings as suitable concrete material. This review paper also highlights knowledge gaps that must be overcome to progress mine tailings composites for geopolymers, as well as future study opportunities based on prior research and existing challenges.

Abstract:The engineering properties of tailings are important for the safety evaluation and engineering design of tailing dams. In the present study, laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the geotechnical properties of four different tailings, including two iron tailings (coarse and fine) and two copper tailings (coarse and fine). Compared to the copper tailings, the iron tailings showed higher compressibility, lower permeability, lower strength, and lower cyclic resistance. With the decrease in void ratio, the coefficient of consolidation almost kept constant for the fine iron tailings, whereas for the fine copper tailings, the coefficient of consolidation gradually increased. Under cyclic loading, the accumulation of pore water pressure was faster in the fine tailings than that in the coarse tailings. The cyclic resistance ratios (CRR) of the four tailings were found to be comparable with previous report data on other metal tailings, and the consolidation stress showed little impact on CRR. The laboratory tests provided useful information to understand the geotechnical behaviors of mine tailings including seepage, deformation, strength, as well as seismic responses.

Abstract:Shaanxi Province is located in the most important molybdenum ore district in the world, but a lot of molybdenum tailings have been released, polluting the environment and wasting resources seriously. Taking eleven tailing samples collected at the main molybdenum tailings ponds in Shaanxi Province as the research object, the physical, chemical, and mineralogical characteristics were studied through scanning electron microscope, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer, and others. The ecological risk and utilization potential of molybdenum tailings were investigated through leaching test, geo-accumulation index, potential ecological risk assessment, and other methods. The results demonstrated that the main chemical and mineralogical composition of various molybdenum tailings in Shaanxi Province is similar, and the predominant mineral composition is muscovite, quartz, microcline, and calcite. The potential ecological risk of heavy metals in six molybdenum tailings is high, while Pb and Cd are the main pollution risk elements. Molybdenum tailings contain considerable amounts of critical minerals with huge potential economic value, and molybdenum tailings with high environmental hazards could be converted into a possible source for critical minerals by recovering the critical minerals and repurposing the secondary tailings as an additive or cement substitute. This study provides an innovative idea for the pollution treatment of molybdenum tailings and indicates the prospect of molybdenum tailings as a secondary source for critical minerals.

Abstract:As mineral resources become increasingly scarce and environmental awareness grows, mining companies urgently need cost-effective and environmentally friendly filling methods for mines. The use of ultrafine tailings combined with various binders at different ratios plays a key role in determining the rheological properties and mechanical strength of cemented paste backfill. This paper provides parameter basis for the design of a mine filling system, firstly, different filling materials and proportions were selected, and basic physicochemical property tests, along with cementitious material analysis, were conducted to determine the key physical and chemical properties and mineral composition of the materials. Next, the rheological properties, transport performance, and bleeding characteristics of the filling slurry were tested to assess the feasibility and process requirements for self-flow transport through pipelines. The results indicated that the transportation performance of the slurry was better when gelling powder was used as the binder. Finally, the compressive, shear, and tensile strengths of the filling blocks were tested under varying slurry mass concentrations and cement-tailings ratios at different curing times. This helped identify the optimal filling concentration and proportions needed to meet the strength requirements of the filling structure. The final study found that the sample with a cement-tailings ratio of 1:6, a mass concentration of 68%, and a gelling powder as the binder reached the strength requirements for mine filling after 28 days. This research offers valuable insights for other mining companies seeking to implement similar environmentally sustainable and cost-effective filling technologies, promoting wider adoption and advancements in the field.

Abstract:Drainage from current and historic mining operations remains a persistent environmental problem. Numerous research and development efforts were made in 2019 with a goal to minimize the impact of mine drainage on the environment, while other research endeavors addressed the mine drainage issue from a different perspective, where mine drainage was considered a resource for water and valuable products, such as metals, sulfuric acid, and rare earth elements. Thus, this review has two main sections: (a) focusing on research efforts in mine drainage remediation technology, and (b) emphasizing advances in resource recovery from mine drainage. The first section covers traditional and emerging passive and active treatment technologies. The second section summarizes resource recovery efforts using various technologies, such as selective precipitation, membrane process, and biological systems. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Significant progress continued to be made in the management of mine drainage and related issues. Recent remediation technology advances in mine drainage were presented. Technologies focusing on resource recovery from mine drainage were reviewed.

Abstract:A large number of iron ore tailings produced by the iron ore beneficiation industry have become a major challenge for industry owners and local government dealing with waste due to their environmental pollution, health issues and land scarcity. The best way to solve the problems of iron ore tailings is to develop large-scale utilization technologies that can consume large amounts of this waste. This paper specifically points out three directions for the use of iron ore tailings in construction and building materials, namely production of cementitious materials, preparation of bricks as well as preparation of concrete. Current research status and progress on the cementitious activity of iron ore tailings and these three directions are reviewed, and the future scope of research in this area is suggested. It is believed that iron ore tailings are consumed in large quantities, which not only solves their disposal related difficulties but also saves natural materials for these construction and building materials. From the economic point of view, it also provides economic advantages by not only producing low-cost construction and building materials, but also reducing the disposal cost of iron ore tailings.(c) 2021 Elsevier Ltd.
