Abstract:China′s mining enterprises have accumulated a large amount of tailings,the grade of ore is still high in tailings,even higher than industrial grade,and there are lots of useful components in the ore tailings.Still more,long time and large number of pile up always lead all kinds of negetive effect.This paper first analyzed the development potential of the tailings and the negative impact;and then analyzed the current state of research and utilization of tailings;last,given the relevant policy recommendations.

Abstract:Gold ore generally had low grade,and it produced more tailings than other metal ores after mineral processing and smelting.Gold tailings were discharged in a large number of emissions,causing the loss of gold and other valuable metal,at the same time,the piling of a large number of the tailings brought great damage to the environment.In order to recover valuable metals and protect the ecological environment of mining area,this paper described the comprehensive utilization of tailings,which highlighted the recovery techniques of valuable elements in tailings to turn waste into wealth and develop valuable secondary resources.

Abstract:The safety and stability of tailing ponds plays an important role in the mining production and environmental protection in China. This paper was based on the results of nationwide investigations of metal and nonmetal mines conducted by State Administration of Work Safety (SAWS), and summarized the distribution features of China's tailing ponds and problems with safety management. Based on the analyses of current laws, codes and standards on the tailing ponds' safety of China, this paper researched the current status of risk management, safety assessment methods and technical research status of tailing ponds, and also discussed the safety conditions of China's tailing ponds in the future. The research indicates that safety conditions of China's tailing ponds safety will be significantly improved by China government.

Abstract:Gold tailings are characterized by low-grade, complex composition, fine embedded particle size, environmental pollution, and large land occupation. This paper describes the mineralogical properties of gold tailings, including chemical composition, phase composition, particle size distribution, and microstructure; summarizes the recycling and utilization of components such as mica, feldspar, and valuable metals in gold tailings; reviews harmless treatment measures for harmful elements in gold tailings; and adumbrated the research progress of gold tailings in the application fields of building materials, ceramics, and glass materials. Based on these discussions, a new technology roadmap that combines multistage magnetic separation and cemented filling is proposed for the clean utilization of all components of gold tailings.
Environmental Contamination Characteristics of Heavy Metals from Abandoned Lead–zinc Mine Tailings in China

Abstract:China holds large-scale lead–zinc mineral resources; however, mining activities often cause severe contamination by heavy metals. This study systemically assessed contamination by eight heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Cr, Hg, Ni, and As) in mine tailings, soil, and groundwater from 27 contaminated sites across China. Regarding mine tailings, 1% of the mine tailing samples were hazardous waste and 20% were class II non-hazardous waste. Regarding soil, Zn and Pb showed the highest mean concentrations, at 5574.67 mg/kg and 2034.88 mg/kg, respectively. The indexes of geo-accumulation (Igeo) of eight heavy metals ranged from −3.62 to 7.67, while Zn, Pb, and Cd showed the highest environmental risk levels as the priority pollutants. The contamination levels of these heavy metals in groundwater were generally in the order of Zn>As>Pb>Ni>Cd>Cu>Hg>Cr. In this study, 20% of the soil and 10% of the groundwater samples exceeded the corresponding quality limits. The content of heavy metals in soil, groundwater, and mine tailing were positively correlated, demonstrating the main pollution source and transport paths. The pollution levels of heavy metals in soil and groundwater were listed in the foremost and moderate positions compared with similar sites from other countries, respectively. These results may help determine the pollution levels of lead–zinc mining regions and direct the remediation activities of target sites to support the environmental management of abandoned mining and tailing waste in China.

Abstract:The production process of antimony produces a large amount of solid waste, such as waste rock in mining, tailings in the beneficiation, metallurgical slag in the smelting, and so on. At present, most of these solid wastes are currently in storage, and the storage of a large amount of solid wastes is not only harmful to the local ecological environment but also a waste of resources. In view of this situation, this paper will take antimony tailings and metallurgical slag as examples and summarize them according to their different treatment methods. The comprehensive utilization of antimony tailings is mainly recovering metals by beneficiation and metallurgy and using antimony tailings as building materials and underground filling materials, while the comprehensive utilization method of antimony metallurgical slag is mainly the recovery of valuable metals by pyrometallurgy or hydrometallurgy or the stabilization technology. This paper summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of different treatment methods and puts forward the prospect of future research directions for the treatment of different metallurgical slags and tailings.

Abstract:The comprehensive utilization of industrial solid waste has become an important measure for resource-saving and environment-friendly society.The overall situation of industrial solid waste in recent years in China is described.The progress on the technology for comprehensive utilization of some typical industrial solid waste including fly ash,tailings,slag,byproduct gypsum,red mud and coal gangue is summarized.Especially,the utilization of coal gangue is described in details.Finally,the prospect on the development of technology and criteria for industrial solid waste utilization is analyzed.

Use of Tolerant Population of P. Distichum for Revegetation of a Pb/Zn Mine Tailings at Lechang: Field Experiment

Abstract:A field trial was conducted on Lechang Pb/Zn mine tailings at Shaoguan, Guangdong Province, to evaluate the growth of a metal tolerant population of Paspalum distichum on Pb/Zn tailings amended with soil and domestic refuse. Chemical analysis indicated that the toxic level of heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Cu and Cd) and deficiency of major nutrients (N, P, K and organic materials) were the major constraints of the tailings for plant establishment. In the first three months, P. distichum could successfully grow on pure tailings, but the addition of soil and domestic refuse significantly improved growth of the grass, the application of limestone not only improved plant growth, but also inhibited the uptake of heavy metals by plants. The second harvest after one-year growth indicated that there was significant increase of biomass in TDL treatment (tailings+domestic refuse+limestone) compared with the first harvest. Generally, there were evident decreases of heavy metals contents in plant in the second harvest. Results presented here demonstrated that use of tolerant species together with waste materials might be a cost-effective method for revegetation of mine tailings.

Abstract:Mineral resources are an essential foundation for economic and social development. However, many tailings generated and stockpiled during the mining process have become an obstacle to developing a low-carbon and green economy. In this paper, we selected copper tailings as a representative case study. First, we used material flow analysis for copper tailings in Tongling City and then constructed a life cycle assessment model. Finally, we set up a detailed scenario analysis of the carbon reduction benefits of copper tailings resource utilization. The results show that (1) the current comprehensive utilization of tailings is relatively single, with low added value, a common problem in the tailings resource utilization industry. (2) The resource utilization of tailings has positive environmental benefits. The global warming potential (GWP) is more prominent (e.g., preparation of cement and autoclaved blocks can achieve carbon emission reduction benefits of about 200 kgCO2/t tailings). (3) In a scenario in which the historically stockpiled tailings can be used rationally, the indirect carbon emission reduction is comparable to the carbon emission of power generation in Tongling City in one year. The resource utilization of tailings will relieve the pressure on resources and contribute to the realization of China's ‘Carbon Peaking and Neutrality Goals,’ with a significant benefit of emission reduction. At present, there are few such studies on bulk industrial solid waste. The research framework in this paper can provide reference for environmental impact assessment of other types of bulk industrial solid waste and provide policy guidance for industrial layout and development planning in similar resource-based and industrial cities and even at a larger scale.

Abstract:Through the survey and research on the typical metal tailings pond of Daye,Hubei Province,and based on the systematic analysis of tailings resources,a mathematical model of fuzzy synthetic discrimination for appraising the availability of the metal tailings of Daye is developed.By using this model,the 10 multi-metal tailings dams with mainly Cu content in this area have been appraised.The results indicated that the model had a good adaptability in the appraisal and analysis of multi-metal tailings,and can accurately reflect the impact of each appraisal factor.The model provides a scientific basis for the rational development and utilization of tailings.

Abstract:The harm of the sand tailings and the present conditions of its control in Jinchuan Copper-Nickel Mine were analyzed.From the view point of recycle economy,a mode of recycle economy for the utilization of the tailings as resource is proposed based on the experimental research.It simulates the geological weathering process in the earth surface system to reduce the waste solid and liquid pollutants in a large amount and meanwhile produce high value-added product such as amorphous silicon dioxide(white carbon),nano-scaled magnesium hydroxide and iron hydroxide by making use of the self-reaction between the tailings and AMD.This self-reaction technology between tailings and acidic waste water can be used not only to comprehensively solve the problem of tailings and acidic water pollution in Jinchuan Mine,but also to recover the valuable components and obtain high value-added products so as to attain the aim of treating wastes by wastes,reducing consumption,increasing productivity and benefits,decreasing waste discharge and disposal and preventing environment pollution.

Abstract:Mining is the foundation of modern industrial development. In the context of the "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality" era, countries have put forward the development strategy of "adhering to the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature." The ongoing progress and improvement of filling mining technology have provided significant advantages, such as "green mining, safe, efficient, and low-carbon emission," which is crucial to the comprehensive utilization of mining solid waste, environmental protection, and safety of re-mining. This review paper describes the development history of metal mine filling mining in China and the characteristics of each stage. The excitation mechanism and current research status of producing cementitious materials from blast furnace slag and other industrial wastes are then presented, and the concept of developing cementitious materials for backfill based on the whole solid waste is proposed. The advances in the mechanical characteristics of cemented backfill are elaborated on four typical levels: static mechanics, dynamic mechanics, mechanical influencing factors, and multi-scale mechanics. The working/rheological characteristics of the filling slurry are presented, given the importance of the filling materials conveying process. Finally, the future perspectives of mining with backfill are discussed based on the features of modern filling concepts to provide the necessary theoretical research value for filling mining.

Abstract:The National Development and Reform Commission and the Energy Bureau jointly issued the 'Plant Water Utilization Development Plan' on January 29, 2013, which requires that China should gradually establish a more complete legal system, macro management and technical support system for mine water in 2015. But so far, due to the influence of geological conditions and other factors, the impurity composition and content of mine water is very different. Based on the comprehensive summary of the theory, method, application technology, practical engineering and processing technology of mine water disaster and its reutilization in China. This article systematically analyzed the latest research progress and achievements, which include basic theory, hydrogeology (supplement) exploration, advanced detection and monitoring as well as early warning. These can further promote application of current technology, develop new technology and methods, point out the challenges and the existing problems of the mine water field, the gaps with requirements of fast, intensive, and large-scale development of the coal industry in China. Finally, the development trends, future important scientific innovation and key technology were discussed. The prospects of the industry and technology were also forecast.

Abstract:Cleaner production is an integrated preventive environmental strategy intended to minimize waste and emissions and maximize product output. The mining industry continually supplies raw materials to other industries, which inevitably leads to enormous emissions. In recent decades, mining engineers have examined many pathways to advance the implementation of cleaner production practices, of which paste backfill is one of the representative technologies. Moreover, this technology is an effective practical approach for the management of process tailings, the largest source of mining waste, since this technology offers significant environmental, technical, and economic benefits. However, due to the more stringent requirements of clean production, the greater the depth of excavation is, the lower the grades of ore (or the more abundant and finer the tailings are) and the longer the distances of paste transport are, and the application of paste backfill technology encounters increasing challenges. For this purpose, the paper presents a systematic review of tailings paste applications in mines for cleaner production. First, the basic concepts and characteristics of paste technology, typical compositions of the paste system, and development progress of the paste practices in China are comprehensively introduced. Second, the latest research on core paste technology is elaborated, such as tailings thickening, pipeline transportation, multiphysics mechanisms, and new paste materials. Third, a few typical engineering cases of underground paste filling, open pit or ground collapse backfilling, and tailings paste stacking are described, and their engineering backgrounds, key equipment, and operating parameters are studied. Finally, the challenges and future research direction of paste technology, such as paste backfill in deep mining and paste systems with a large capacity, low cost requirements, intelligent control, and multiphase paste materials, are identified to promote cleaner production practices in mining.
