Abstract:In this paper X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS) were used to analyze the surface chemical component of the pulp and fiber after refining. Morphological properties of pulps and fiber were studied by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). After refining SR and water retention value (WRV) both decreased as while fines released more. The surface of chemical component of fibers and pulp was analyzed by XPS. The results were shown that surface coverage of lignin and extractives was decreased and increased with refining, respectively. After fines were removed, the surface coverage of lignin and extractives is all lower than pulp. Cellulose, lignin, the composition of extractives in eucalyptus and pine were identified by ToF-SIMS. Morphological properties of fiber and pulp were given by FE-SEM. It shows that the surface of fiber is more uniform, the shrinkage size of fiber is smaller after drying with refining.
