Abstract:This paper aims to study the relationships between the green plant cover of rape, and hyperspectral data. Firstly, the Narrow Band Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NBNDVI) was derived from these spectral measurements. Then, green plant cover (GPC) was calculated based on digital photographs of the vegetation canopy through GIS software, which were taken when the spectral data of rape were gathered in the field of rape. In the paper,. All the narrow bands in the spectral region (350 similar to 2500 nm) were used to create possible NDVI combinations and the linear fitted models were constructed between these NDVIs and GPC of rape. The plots of R-2 values of these models illustrated the most effective wavelength combinations (lambda(1) and lambda(2)) and band-widths (X, and X,) for predicting rape GPC at different development stages. The best NBNDVI models explained the 73% to 92% variability of rape GPC at different growth stages. A strong relationship with rape GPC is located in the shorter portion of the green region, 500nm to 550nm, red-edge, 700 nm to 750 nm and the portion around the red region including the two parts: 600 rim to 650 nm and 650 nm to 700 nm. These results indicate that rape GPC may be accurately estimated by NBNDVI based on wavelengths located in the visible, the red edge and the NIR portion. Through the study, 7 hyperspectral bands were selected in the visible and NIR range of the spectra, for optimum estimation of rape GPC.
