Abstract:Modem applications of scare resources simply mean clean, convenient, efficient, reliable, sustainable, economically and environmentally sound applications. Biomass has been regarded as a major form of renewable energy due to its neutral position in the emission of green house gases such as carbon dioxide. An ASPEN PLUS process flowsheet simulation model was conducted to investigate the effect of co- gasification of coal and rice husk on the performance and pollutant emissions of gasifier in IGCC (Integrated Gasification Combustion Cycle) plants. The analyses were done for an O-2-blown, pulverized coal and rice husk as feedstock, parameters of the blending ratio of rice husk in coal and gaseous pollutant index were introduced. Information on the emission of particulate matters such as slag was also analyzed. From the simulation results, due to the decrease in the heating value of rice husk, combustion temperature and energy output from the co-gasification process were lower compared to coal combustion alone. However, it was also seen that pollutant emission was reduced in the co-gasification process. Gaseous pollutant emissions including CO, NOx, H2S and SO2 were reduced substantially with the increase of the blending ratio. An optimum range between 10% and 30% rice husk-to-coal ratio was found to be the optimum point in terms of gaseous pollutant index. Simultaneously, Emission of particulate matters was found to increase with co-gasification of rice husk and coal. The finding from this study confirmed that rice husk can be a good renewable fuel for co-firing with coal gasification in terms of energy efficiency and environmental impact.
