Abstract:Chemical fibers are generally used to produce specialty papers to render them some special properties, but it is difficult to mix chemical fibers with plant fibers to make paper by traditional forming process since hydrophobic chemical fibers often raise the problems in dispersing and forming. In order to enhance the hydrophilicity of chemical fibers, thus allowing chemical fibers more suitable for papermaking, we developed a simple and clean method that could coat a hydrophilic layer onto the surfaces of chemical fibers by the dissolved chitosan gel. In this work, surface morphology of PVA and PET fibers with and without coating were revealed by SEM, and the adsorption ratio and contact angle of the fibers were also determined. Results showed that the method developed is an effective approach to modify the chemical fibers; and both PVA and PET fibers could be rendered hydrophilic at various adsorption ratios. Mechanical strength of the handsheets made from coated chemical fibers was generally higher than that from uncoated fibers. Better affinity between PVA fibers and chitosan resulted in higher adsorption ratio, lower contact angle and higher paper strength than those of PET fibers.
