Abstract:The complexity of surgical techniques, and concerns over X-ray radiation exposure levels to orthopedic surgeons, has prompted the introduction of new technologies into the operating room with the aim of improving the precision, repeatability and radiation safety of existing surgical procedures. The fluoroscopy-based orthopedic system described in this paper is typical of this trend. The parallel robot in this system replaces the traditional reduction tools. We install a calibration box with three inlaid steel balls in its upper and lower facets respectively on the series robot, and use a simple and precise targeting method based on a geometric model to get the 3-D path for guiding the series robot to lock the intramedullary nail. This method requires the capture of two distortion X-ray images containing targeting distal hole and six markers on the calibration box from two different angles, extracting both the projections of the six markers and the projections of the distal hole. Using this method, we can calculate the line equation of this 3-D path that passes through the distal locking hole. Experimental results indicate that this system has enough positioning accuracy and stability, decreases operating time dramatically, can apply to most kinds of imtramedullary nails.
