Abstract:The surface modification of porous carbon with polymers has been a subject of great interest toward advanced applications, such as absorbents, owing to its combination of physical adsorption with chemical adsorption; they are expected to provide reasonable adsorption efficiencies. Polymer-based modifications, however, have rarely been reported so far. The main disadvantages of mesoporous carbon-based adsorbents are the complicated preparation process and high cost. As a contrast, a nanocomposite based on activated carbon appears to be of great scientific and industrial interest. Herein, we review the methods of how to introduce functional polymers inside activated carbon, while keeping the pore channels for the adsorption of pollutant molecules. The recent results for poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, PDMAEMA) and poly(methyl methacrylate, PMMA) functionalization activated carbon were presented. The ability of the composite material for removing metal ions and organic materials from aqueous solution was studied, which shows a promising adsorption property. The strategy developed here is expected to be extended to the design of other functional polymer-modified activated carbon for the removal of pollutants. The outlook for potential applications and further challenges is also provided.
