In this paper, we study the partial non-combinatorially symmetric N1 0 -matrix completion problems if the graph of its specified entries is a transitive tournament or a double cycle. In general, these digraphs do not have N1 0 -completion. Therefore, we have given sufficient conditions that guarantee the existence of the N1 0 -completion for these digraphs.

Abstract:Suppose A is an n by n complex matrix, whether a H-matrix is of important in many application fields is discussed in this paper. Many concept of diagonal dominance of matrices are special cases of H-matrices. The concept of local double - diagonally dominant matrix is introduced. The new matrix class contains the strictly diagonally dominant matrix, connect diagonally dominant matrix and the matrices. A sufficient condition and an equivalent condition of H-matrices are obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, the problem of when the sub-direct sum of two strictly diagonally dominant P-matrices is a strictly diagonally dominant P-matrix is studied. In particular, it is shown that the subdirect sum of overlapping principal submatrices of strictly diagonally dominant P-matrices is a strictly diagonally dominant P-matrix. It is also established that the 2-subdirect sum of two totally nonnegative matrices is a totally nonnegative matrix under some conditions. It is obtained that a partial totally nonnegative matrix, whose graph of the specified entries is a monotonically labeled 2-chordal graph, has a totally nonnegative completion. Finally, a positive answer to the question (IV) in Fallat and Johnson [Shaun M. Fallat, C.R. Johnson, J.R. Torregrosa, A.M. Urbano, P-matrix completions under weak symmetry assumptions, Linear Algebra Appl. 312 (2000) 73–91] is given for P0-matrices.

Abstract:A matrix is called totally negative (totally non-positive) of order $k$, if all its minors of size at most $k$ are negative (non-positive). The objective of this article is to provide several novel characterizations of total negativity via the (a) sign non-reversal property, (b) variation diminishing property, and (c) Linear Complementarity Problem. More strongly, each of these three characterizations uses a single test vector. As an application of the sign non-reversal property, we study the interval hull of two rectangular matrices. In particular, we identify two matrices $C^\pm(A,B)$ in the interval hull of matrices $A$ and $B$ that test total negativity of order $k$, simultaneously for the entire interval hull. We also show analogous characterizations for totally non-positive matrices. These novel characterizations may be considered similar in spirit to fundamental results characterizing totally positive matrices by Brown--Johnstone--MacGibbon [J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 1981] (see also Gantmacher--Krein, 1950), Choudhury--Kannan--Khare [Bull. London Math. Soc., 2021] and Choudhury [Bull. London Math. Soc., 2022]. Finally using a 1950 result of Gantmacher--Krein, we show that totally negative/non-positive matrices can not be detected by (single) test vectors from orthants other than the open bi-orthant that have coordinates with alternating signs, via the sign non-reversal property or the variation diminishing property.

Abstract:A $n$-by-$n$ matrix is called totally positive ($TP$) if all its minors are positive and $TP_k$ if all of its $k$-by-$k$ submatrices are $TP$. For an arbitrary totally positive matrix or $TP_k$ matrix, we investigate if the $r$th compound ($1<r<n$) is in turn $TP$ or $TP_k$, and demonstrate a strong negative resolution in general. Focus is then shifted to Dodgson's algorithm for calculating the determinant of a generic matrix, and we analyze whether the associated condensed matrices are possibly totally positive or $TP_k$. We also show that all condensed matrices associated with a $TP$ Hankel matrix are $TP$.

Abstract:A real n × n symmetric matrix P is partially positive (PP) for a given index set I ⊆ {1, ..., n } if there exists a matrix V such that V ( I ,:) ⩾ 0 and P = V V T . Abstract:The problem of when the k-subdirect sum of a doubly diagonally dominant matrix (DDD matrix) is also a DDD matrix is studied. Some sufficient conditions are given. The same situation is analyzed for diagonally dominant matrices and strictly diagonally dominant matrices. Abstract:A symmetric matrix C is completely positive (CP) if there exists an entrywise nonnegative matrix B such that C = BBT. The CP-completion problem is to study whether we can assign values to the missing entries of a partial matrix (i.e., a matrix having unknown entries) such that the completed matrix is completely positive. We propose a semidefinite algorithm for solving general CP-completion problems and study its properties. When all of the diagonal entries are given, the algorithm can give a certificate if a partial matrix is not CP-completable, and it almost always gives a CP-completion if it is CP-completable. When diagonal entries are partially given, similar properties hold. Computational experiments are also presented to show how CP-completion problems can be solved.

An n x n sign pattern A is said to be potentially eventually positive (PEP) if there exists some real matrices A with the same sign pattern as A such that A is eventually positive.
