Abstract:The ternary rare-earth gallium bismuthide LaGaBi(2) has been prepared through reaction of the elements. Its structure (Pearson symbol hP24, hexagonal, space group P6/mmm, Z = 6, a = 13.5483(4) A, c = 4.3937(1) A) contains columns of La(6) trigonal prisms centered by Bi atoms. These columns are surrounded by a framework consisting of three-atom-wide Bi ribbons and Ga(6) rings. Additional Bi atoms are sandwiched between pairs of Ga(6) rings. LaGaBi(2) is structurally closely related to La(13)Ga(8)Sb(21). A retrotheoretical analysis of the structure through extended Hückel band structure calculations suggests an interesting electronic situation in which strong multiple bonding in the Ga-Ga network coexists with weak hypervalent bonding in the Bi-Bi network and confirms the metallic behavior seen in electrical resistivity measurements.

Abstract:We report an investigation on the structures and chemical bonding in a series of di-lanthanum boron clusters, La2Bn- (n = 4-6), using photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. Well-resolved photoelectron spectra are obtained and used to verify the global minima of the lanthanide boron clusters. The structures of La2B4- and La2B5- are found to consist of open B4 and B5 rings, respectively, around the La2 dimer equatorially. Theoretical evidence of La-La σ bonding is obtained in La2B4-, whereas the bonding in La2B5- is similar to that of an incomplete inverse sandwich without real La-La bonding. The global minimum of La2B6- is completely different, where one of the La atoms can be viewed as substituting a B atom of the B7 cluster due to the high electronic stability of the B73- borozene. The resulting lanthaborozene [LaB6]3- forms a half-sandwich structure with the second La atom, with evidence of La-La σ bonding. Lanthanide-lanthanide bonds are relatively rare in chemistry. The current work suggests that binary lanthanide boron clusters provide interesting systems to study lanthanide-lanthanide bonding.

Abstract:A series of rare earth complexes of tributylammonium nitrate was synthesized. The general formula was C38H84LnN9O18 (Ln  La, Ce, Pr, Nd). The IR spectra and thermoanalytical curves of the complexes were studied. The molar conductivities showed them to be 3:1 type electrolytes and ionic crystals. The single-crystal structure of tributylammonium hexanitrate lanthanum was determined using a four-circle X-ray diffractometer. The crystal is monoclinic, space group C2, with unit cell dimensions a = 1.4983(2) nm, b = 1.6715(7) nm, c = 1.1131(3) nm, β = 91.82(2)°, Z = 2, R = 0.062 and Rw = 0.074. Lanthanum is coordinated by 12 oxygen atoms of six bidentate nitrate groups. The polyhedron of the La3+ ion is a twist bistaggered 3333 stack. The average bond length La-O is 0.2569 nm.

Abstract:Lanthanum zinc penta-borate, LaZnB(5)O(10), was synthesized by flux-supported solid-state reaction. It is a member of the LnMB(5)O(10) (Ln = rare earth ion and M = divalent metal ion) structure type. The crystal shows a three-dimensional structure constructed from two-dimensional {[B(5)O(10)](5-)}(n) layers with the lanthanum (coordination number nine) and zinc (coordination number six) ions filling in the inter-layers.

Abstract:Boric acid is used as a flux and reactant to synthesize a novel hydrated rare earth polyborate, La[B5O8(OH)(H(2)o)]NO3 center dot 2H(2)O. The structure of the title compound is established by single X-ray diffraction data. It crystallizes in monoclinic structures(P2(1)/n) and consists of a double three-membered ring composed of three BO4 and two BO3 groups as the fundamental building block(FBB). The FBB shares four common oxygen atoms with the the adjacent FBBs producing a borate layer containing nine-membered borate ring window. Lanthanum cations are located around the center of the nine-membered ring. The borate layers are stacked along the b axis and are inter-linked by the La-O bond. Nitrate ions and some water molecules are sandwiched between the borate layers. This study further demonstrates that the low temperature synthesis approach by using molten boric acid as a flux is effective for the syntheses of hydrated rare earth polyborates.

Abstract:Three novel hydrated rare earth polyborates, Ln[B8O11(OH)(5)] (Ln = La-Nd) (1), Ln[B9O13-(OH)(4)].H2O (Ln = Pr - Eu) (2), and Ce[B5O8(OH)]NO3.3H(2)O (3) have been synthesized by using boric acid as a flux at 240 degreesC, starting from rare earth oxides or nitrates and an excess of boric acid. All these polyborates crystallize in monoclinic structures (P2(1)/n) and consist of borate sheets as the fundamental unit, that is, [LnB(6)O(11)] sheet in 1 and 2 and [CeB5O9] sheet in 3. The borate sheets all contain a nine-membered borate ring, of which the rare earth cations are located around the center. The borate frameworks in 1 and 3 are two-dimensional, which are interlinked via ionic Ln-O bonds forming 3D structures. While in 2 the borate framework is three-dimensional with small channels filled by water molecules. Annealing the hydrated polyborates I and 2 at moderate temperature leads to two anhydrous pentaborates, alpha-LnB(5)O(9) (4) for Ln = Pr-Eu and beta-LnB(5)O(9) (5) for Ln = La, Ce. The structure of beta-LaB5O9 has been determined by an ab initio method using powder X-ray diffraction data. It crystallizes in a monoclinic structure in the space group P2(1)/c with a = 6.4418(l) Angstrom, b = 11.6888(3) Angstrom, c = 8.1706(2) Angstrom, and beta = 105.167(1)degrees. The structure of beta-LnB(5)O(9) contains buckled nine-membered ring borate sheets that are interlinked by BO3 groups forming a three-dimensional framework. The Eu3+-doped beta-LaB5O9 materials show dominant D-5(0 -->) F-7(2) emission and a low quenching concentration (0.6 at. %).

Abstract:Ba2La2MnW2O12, a new quaternary compound, was synthesized in reduced atmosphere (4% H2/Ar) at 1200°C. The manganese and tungsten ions are, respectively Mn(II) and W(VI) as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and magnetic susceptibility. Ba2La2MnW2O12 is isostructural with Ba2La2ZnW2O12, crystallizing in rhombohedral symmetry (R3̄m), a=5.7276(3)Å, c=27.393(2)Å. The structure can be described as close-packed [AO3] arrays in a sequence of (hcch)3, wherein the Mn(II) and W(VI) cations occupy the octahedral sites in three of every four layers. Within the perovskite blocks the Mn(II) layer is sandwiched and isolated by two W(VI) layers, thus Ba2La2MnW2O12 behaves as a paramagnet down to low temperature.

Abstract:A new podand compound o-Bis(8'-quinolyloxy) ethylenoxyl benzene (BQEB) was prepared. A lanthanum adduct with BQEB was synthesized and its structure was characterized by X-ray crystal analysis. The La(III) is ten-coordinated to the three NO3- and four H2O. Two podand molecules are linked to the coordination core by four hydrogen bonds. The crystal is packed in the manner of .LLMLLMLL.

Abstract:A new aluminoborate, [C5H6N][AlB12O14(OH)(12)], has been hydrothermally synthesized at 200 degrees C. The single-crystal diffraction study reveals that it crystallizes in space group C2/c. It consists of aluminoborate clusters [AlB12O14(OH)(12)](-) and counterions [C5H6N](+). The aluminoborate cluster contains an Al(OH)(6) octahedron as a core that is capped by two raft-like polyborate units [B6O7(OH)(6)]. These clusters are further interlinked by extensive hydrogen bonding to form a three-dimensional (3D) network, containing large channels along the b-axis, in which the [C5H6N](+) cations are located. Abstract:A novel hydrated rare earth polyborate, Ln[B5O8(OH)(2)] (Ln=Pr, Nd) has been synthesized by using boric acid as a flux at 200 degrees C. Its crystal structure is established by powder X-ray diffraction technique. Ln[B5O8(OH)(2)] crystallizes in monoclinic space groupP2(1)/c. The title compounds consist of a double three-membered ring composed of three BO4 and two BO3 groups as the fundamental building block. The FBB shares four common oxygen atoms with the adjacent FBBs, producing a borate layer containing nine-membered borate ring window, of which the rare earth cations are located around the center. Abstract:La4Ba2.6Ca1.4(Mn4Ca)O-19, a novel hexagonal perovskite-intergrowth manganate, was synthesized by solid-state reaction. It crystallizes in the space group C2/m (no. 12) with the lattice parameters of a = 9.8394(4) Angstrom, b = 5.6823(2) Angstrom, c = 15.6435(3) Angstrom, and beta = 102.093(5), cell volume of 855.21(5) Angstrom(3), and Z = 2. The structure was investigated by electron, X-ray, and neutron diffraction techniques and fully resolved by refinements of both X-ray and neutron powder diffraction data. The structure can be described as alternate stacking of 6H-type hexagonal perovskite blocks and graphite-like Ca2O sheets. In the hexagonal perovskite block, Mn and Ca cations occupy the octahedral sites of the corner-shearing and face-shearing octahedra, respectively. Preferred La/Ba and Ca/La substitution at the ratio of 7:3 was observed over specific crystallographic sites. La(4)Ba(2.6)Cal(1.4)(Mn4Ca)O-19 is an n = 5 member of the A(n+1)Mn(n)O(3n+3)(Ca2O) series in which 1/5 of the Mn atoms in the 6H-hexagonal perovskite blocks are replaced by Ca. A structural principle that is based on alternate stacking of close-packed [AO(3)] layers and graphite-like sheets is introduced for structural prediction of new hexagonal perovskite intergrowth compounds.

Abstract:Reported are the synthesis and structural characterization of a series of quaternary lithium-alkaline earth metal alumo-silicides and alumo-germanides with the base formula A2LiAlTt2 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba; Tt = Si, Ge). To synthesize each compound, a mixture of the elements with the desired stoichiometric ratio was loaded into a niobium tube, arc welded shut, enclosed in a silica tube under vacuum, and heated in a tube furnace. Each sample was analyzed by powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and the crystal structure of each compound was confirmed and refined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. The structures, despite the identical chemical formulae, are different, largely dependent on the nature of the alkaline earth metal. The differing cation determines the structure type—the calcium compounds are part of the TiNiSi family with the Pnma space group, the strontium compounds are isostructural with Na2LiAlP2 with the Cmce space group, and the barium compounds crystallize with the PbFCl structure type in the P4/nmm space group. The anion (silicon or germanium) only impacts the size of the unit cell, with the silicides having smaller unit cell volumes than the germanides.

Abstract:Two new lanthanide–oxalates coordination polymers, [Nd(C2O4)1.5(H2O)3]·2H2O 1, Nd(C2O4)(CH3COO)(H2O) 2, and two new lanthanide–alkali–oxalates coordination polymers KY(C2O4)2(H2O)4 3, KTb(C2O4)2(H2O)4 4, have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and their structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Structural analysis shows that the two-dimensional (2D) layer structure of complex 1 is built up by the linkages of lanthanide atoms and the oxygen atoms of the bischelating oxalate ligands. In complex 2, for introducing of acetate groups, a 3D network with parallelogram channels (6.3×9.4Å) of complex 2 was obtained. The 3D structures of complexes 3 and 4 contain a channel filled with lattice water molecules, and the potassium atoms are located in the framework.
