Abstract:Hydrogen, a kind of clean energy, offers a large amount of heat through combustion without any output of harmful gaseous pollutants or greenhouse gases. Therefore, hydrogen is thought to be very important for the energy industry in the near future. However, due to its inflammability and very low density, the transportation and storage of hydrogen are very important and need to be dealt with; these aspects have significantly limited the application of hydrogen energy. In order to settle these issues, convenient and safe ways of obtaining hydrogen have greatly attracted the interest of researchers. Currently, catalytic methods seem to be the most commonly-used way to produce hydrogen, which is still faced with many challenges. These methods often cost a lot, because noble metals are generally applied as catalyst content. Hence, poisoning and sintering problems are the issues that are hard to solve. Moreover, catalytic reforming systems often demand large spaces and a complex thermal control system. As another advanced technology, non-thermal plasma methods could be a promising candidate due to their non-equilibrium characteristics.
Efficient Plasma Technology for the Production of Green Hydrogen from Ethanol and Water

Abstract:This study concerns the production of hydrogen from a mixture of ethanol and water. The process was conducted in plasma generated by a spark discharge. The substrates were introduced in the liquid phase into the reactor. The gaseous products formed in the spark reactor were hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, acetylene, and ethylene. Coke was also produced. The energy efficiency of hydrogen production was 27 mol(H2)/kWh, and it was 36% of the theoretical energy efficiency. The high value of the energy efficiency of hydrogen production was obtained with relatively high ethanol conversion (63%). In the spark discharge, it was possible to conduct the process under conditions in which the ethanol conversion reached 95%. However, this entailed higher energy consumption and reduced the energy efficiency of hydrogen production to 8.8 mol(H2)/kWh. Hydrogen production increased with increasing discharge power and feed stream. However, the hydrogen concentration was very high under all tested conditions and ranged from 57.5 to 61.5%. This means that the spark reactor is a device that can feed fuel cells, the power load of which can fluctuate.

Abstract:Technology of hydrogen production from ethanol reforming for fuel cells application was summarized. The position and advantages of hydrogen production from ethanol reforming in the technologies of hydrogen sources for fuel cells was analyzed firstly; second, the reactions network of the mechanism of hydrogen production from ethanol reforming were sum up; then the development of relative catalysts, Pd membranes and materials was induced in system; and the two types systems of ethanol reforming PEMFC were sum up comparably. Some potential problems of ethanol reforming PEMFC system were discussed initially, and the future of ethanol reforming PEMFC system was predicted.

Abstract:With the continuous development of human society, the shortages of fossil resource and environmental pollution are increasingly prominent. Hydrogen is a clean and efficient alternative energy, among various hydrogen production technologies, methanol reforming has been regarded as a promising candidate to produce hydrogen for daily energy supply due to its low cost and safe transportation. In this review, we discuss the sources of methanol and the methods of methanol reforming for hydrogen production. Then, we focus on the catalysts for methanol reforming and their preparation methods. Particular attention is paid to the structural design and manufacturing process to make methanol reforming microreactors. We also summarize recent studies on the practical applications of methanol reforming technologies, as well as the capture and utilization of the generated carbon to reduce its emission. Finally, the prospect challenges of methanol reforming for highly efficient hydrogen production technologies and contribution to the “double carbon” goals and the challenges are discussed. In summary, this review will be conducive to the development of hydrogen-methanol economy for practical and industry applications.

Abstract:Hydrogen is one of the most promising energy and the fuel for fuel-cell-powered automobiles. Liquid fuels have been considered as the most suitable source for onboard hydrogen production, and cold plasma is proved to be a potential way to convert them. In this review, the conversion of methanol, ethanol and dimethyl ether (DME) using different types of cold plasma has been summarized. Hydrogen is the main product with different by-products depending on reaction conditions. The conversion of liquid fuels for hydrogen production via cold plasma has good prospects, and reaction conditions optimization and reactor design are very important for its future application onboard.

Abstract:Ethanol and ethanol-water mixture were converted directly into H2 with ～60% selectivity and ～100% conversion by a catalytic reforming on nickle lanthanide oxide catalysts. The catalysts were optimized and the refroming reaction were performed at temperatures sufficiently low that the water gas shift(WGS) reaction can be combined to decrease CO .This process has great potential for low-cost H2 generation in fuel cells for small portable applications while where liquid fuel storage is essential and where systems must be small, simple, and robust.

Abstract:Hydrogen production from ethanol reforming using microwave plasmas has great potential. In this study, a microwave plasma torch is used as a plasma source. Air is used as a discharge gas to generate the plasma. Ethanol and air are mixed and injected directly into the plasma reaction zone in a vortex flow. The effects of the oxygen-to-ethanol molar ratio (O2/Et), ethanol flow rate, and absorbed microwave power on the reforming results are investigated. When the O2/Et exceeds 0.9, ethanol is completely converted. The hydrogen selectivity is the largest when the O2/Et is 1.1, which is about 66.5%. The maximum hydrogen production rate is 2.19 mol(H2)/mol(C2H5OH). The best carrier gas residence time is 0.64-0.81 s. An appropriate increase in the ethanol flow rate can improve the ethanol conversion rate and energy efficiency while reducing the hydrogen selectivity and hydrogen yield, so the ethanol flow rate should not exceed 42.1 mL/min. The cost of hydrogen production is minimum [$3.66/kg(H2)] when the ethanol flow rate is 42.1 mL/min. The positive effect of the absorbed microwave power on the reforming reaction is significant, but too much microwave power also reduces energy efficiency. The optimum experimental conditions are an O2/Et of 0.9, an ethanol flow rate of 42.1 mL/min, and an absorbed microwave power of 700 W. The maximum energy yield is 861.91 NL(H2)/kWh at an absorbed microwave power of 700 W. The main reforming products are H2, CO, CO2, CH4, C2H2, C2H4, C2H6, C3H6, C3H8, C4H10n, and C4H10i. The content of C2 or higher hydrocarbons is considerably low. Almost no deposited carbon is generated in the experiment, which means that the design of the reforming system is effective in suppressing carbon deposition.

Abstract:Hydrogen is an environmental-friendly and renewable energy source and an important form of energy storage. The development and utilization of hydrogen energy can not only solve two major problems of energy scarcity and environmental pollution caused by the massive use of fossil fuels, but also help to optimize the energy structure from non-renewable source to clean and renewable source of energy. Among those hydrogen production technologies, aqueous phase reforming of biomass derivatives is an attractive way for the effective generation of hydrogen and fine utilization of biomass, which is a high-value and less polluted resource. Aqueous phase reforming of biomass derivatives with wide range of sources and high hydrogen content enjoy high yield of hydrogen and relatively mild reaction conditions. In this paper, a detailed of hydrogen production by aqueous phase reforming of different sources is provided. The research progress in hydrogen production by aqueous phase reforming of biomass derivatives in recent years is reviewed and discussed, and the catalytic reaction mechanisms and the effect of catalyst properties are summarized and presented. The current challenges and future developments in this research area are briefly prospected as well.

Abstract:Hydrogen is a nontoxic gas used to generate electricity, or power and heat. It is produced via a variety of methods that use either fossil fuel or renewable resources. Issues of carbon emissions and green energy requirements for a low-carbon energy future need to be considered when developing and choosing processes to generate hydrogen. This chapter discusses both conventional and nonconventional methods for producing hydrogen, including steam reforming (SR), partial oxidation reforming (POR), and autothermal reforming (ATR) techniques. It also examines chemical processes, such as electrolysis, fermentation, and high-temperature and photoelectrochemical water-splitting techniques. The chapter addresses the environmental impacts of the different processes and discusses different techniques for transport, storage, and distribution of hydrogen. Finally, it highlights the challenges of hydrogen production and presents ideas for future research.

Abstract:CO 2 reforming of CH 4 via corona plasma reactions was studied at 1 atm. The H 2/CO molar ratios in the products strong depended on the CH 4/CO 2 molar ratios in the feeds. The discharge power, flow rate, and corona types showed slight influence on the composition of synthesis gas. Using AC corona plasma CO 2-reforming reactions, H 2/CO ratios in the products increased from 0.21:1 at 0.2:1 CH 4/CO 2 to 2.15:1 at 2:1 CH 4/CO 2. CH 4 and CO 2 conversions increased from 67.5 to 90.5% and from 45.7 to 78.5%, respectively. The conversions increased with increasing discharge power. Ni/Al 2O 3 and HZSM-5 zeolite catalysts used in the CO 2-reforming plasma reactions showed little effect on the conversions. Non-equilibrium plasma reactions may be applied to store electric energy from clean nuclear energy into chemical energy. Abstract:Recent years have witnessed successful applications of non-thermal plasmas (NTPs) as efficient and flexible tools for direct conversion of liquid alcohols into higher-value energy carriers at mild or even near-room-temperature conditions. Better understanding of the fundamental physical properties of the liquid alcohol discharges is needed for development and optimization of NTP-based applications. Here we investigate the discharge characteristics of a plasma-based liquid ethanol conversion under different process parameters and reveal the general trends of the discharge behavior. Two discharge modes, namely the self-pulsed and direct current (DC) modes, are sustained during the in-liquid discharge. These two modes can be easily interchanged and flexibly controlled by adjusting the processing parameters. The behavior of the bubbles generated during the discharge plays an important role in the transition between the discharge modes. When the discharge is sustained with the diffusion and floating of the bubbles, the DC mode is observed. Otherwise, the discharge develops into the pulse mode. The production rates and composition of the gaseous products are also shown to depend on the discharge modes.

Abstract:Bio-ethanol reforming is a type of promising technology for hydrogen production, which is focused on current low-carbon energy research. The key of ethanol reforming is to develop novel reforming catalysts with high activity and high selectivity at low temperature, and new efficient catalytic reactors. The effects of reactors on ethanol reforming process are focused in this paper, and ethanol reforming reactors at home and abroad are reviewed, such as fixed-bed reactors, microchannel reactors and membrane reactors. Based on the extensive discussion of the advantages and weaknesses of various catalytic reactors, the trends in the manufacture and application of bio-ethanol reforming reactors are also prospected. In our opinions, the following aspects need to be studied systematically; (1) strengthening basic theoretical researches, especially the reaction mechanisms of bio-ethanol reforming and the principles of mass/heat transfer, (2) developing novel low-temperature reforming catalysts with high activity, high stability, and low cost, (3) designing highly integrated catalytic reactors for bio-ethanol reforming.

Abstract:Hydrogen is a renewable energy that will play a key role in the recent future, and at present, hydrogen is mainly produced from fossil oil which is nonrenewable. Bioenergy materials are renewable and abundant, and this chapter gives a comprehensive introduction of technologies for converting biomaterial energy to hydrogen. This chapter introduces and details the thermochemical methods (gasification, pyrolysis, supercritical water gasification, and aqueous phase reforming) and biochemical methods (photo fermentation, dark fermentation, and dark-photo co-fermentation) which are used for upgrading bioenergy materials to hydrogen, and the economics of the different technologies are analyzed. Generally, gasification and pyrolysis technologies are the most mature methods with the lowest hydrogen production cost whereas aqueous phase reforming technology has the highest hydrogen production cost. All the introduced technologies should be further developed for commercialization.

Abstract:The valorization of waste, by creating economic value while limiting environmental impact, can have an essential role in sustainable development. Particularly, polymeric waste such as biomass and plastics can be used for the production of green hydrogen as a carbon-free energy carrier through the use of nonthermal plasma powered by renewable, potentially surplus, electricity. In this study, a Streamer Dielectric-Barrier Discharge (SDBD) reactor is designed and built to extract hydrogen and carbon co-products from cellulose and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) as model feedstocks of biomass and plastic waste, respectively. Spectroscopic and electrical diagnostics, together with modeling, are used to estimate representative plasma properties, namely electron and excitation temperatures, number density, and power consumption. Cellulose and LDPE are plasma-treated for different treatment times to characterize the evolution of the hydrogen production process. Gas products are analyzed using gas chromatography to determine the mean hydrogen production rate, production efficiency, hydrogen yield, selectivity, and energy cost. The results show that the maximum hydrogen production efficiency for cellulose is 0.8 mol/kWh, which is approximately double that for LDPE. Furthermore, the energy cost of hydrogen production from cellulose is 600 kWh/kg of H2, half that of LDPE. Solid products are examined via scanning electron microscopy, revealing the distinct morphological structure of the two feedstocks treated, as well as by elemental composition analysis. The results demonstrate that SDBD plasma is effective at producing hydrogen from cellulose and LDPE at near atmospheric pressure and relatively low-temperature conditions in rapid-response and compact processes.

Abstract:This work presents experimental results on the energy efficiency in hydrogen production using atmospheric microwave plasma (915 MHz) through steam reforming of ethanol. Ethanol was chosen as a liquid hydrogen carrier due to its high hydrogen atom content, low cost, and wide availability. The experimental work began with the maximization of an energy efficiency of the used microwave plasma source. The process of maximization involved determining a position of a movable plunger that ensures the most efficient transfer of microwave energy from a microwave source to the generated plasma in the microwave plasma source. The aim of the investigations was to test the following working conditions of the microwave plasma source: absorbed microwave power PA by the generated plasma (up to 5.4 kW), the carrier gas volumetric flow rate (up to 3900 Nl/h), and the amount of the introduced ethanol vapours on the efficiency of hydrogen production (up to 2.4 kg/h). In the range of tested working conditions, the highest energy yield for hydrogen production achieved a rate of 26.9 g(H2)/kWh, while the highest hydrogen production was 99.3 g(H2)/h.

Abstract:Production of hydrogen from ethanol with high hydrogen yield and high energy efficiency was per-formed by using an electrochemical catalytic reforming (ECR) approach over the Ni-based catalyst. ECR was carried out in the fixed-bed continuous flow reactor, where an ac electronic current passed through the catalyst. It was found that the performance of the ethanol reforming not only depended on the reforming temperature, but also was remarkably enhanced by the current through the catalyst. In particular, the hydrogen yield and its selectivity significantly increased with an increase in the current in ECR. The promoting effects of the current on the decomposition of ethanol were also studied via the homogeneous experiments and low-pressure time-of-flight measurements. The alteration of the catalyst after the ECR processes was investigated via X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurements. The mechanism of the electrochemical catalytic reforming of ethanol was discussed on the basis of the above investigation.

Abstract:Abstract Presently, hydrogen is for ∼50% produced by steam reforming of natural gas – a process leading to significant emissions of greenhouse gas (GHG). About 30% is produced from oil/naphtha reforming and from refinery/chemical industry off-gases. The remaining capacity is covered for 18% from coal gasification, 3.9% from water electrolysis and 0.1% from other sources. In the foreseen future hydrogen economy, green hydrogen production methods will need to supply hydrogen to be used directly as fuel or to generate synthetic fuels, to produce ammonia and other fertilizers (viz. urea), to upgrade heavy oils (like oil sands), and to produce other chemicals. There are several ways to produce H2, each with limitations and potential, such as steam reforming, electrolysis, thermal and thermo-chemical water splitting, dark and photonic fermentation; gasification, and catalytic decomposition of methanol. The paper reviews the fundamentals and potential of these alternative process routes. Both thermo-chemical water splitting and fermentation are marked as having a long term but high “green” potential.
