Abstract:Late Paleozoic magmatic rock outcrops are common in the Northern Alxa, Southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB), which is a key area for understanding tectonic processes and defining the final closure time of the Paleo-Asian Ocean (PAO). We present zircon U‒Pb chronology and whole-rock geochemistry data for late Paleozoic magmatic rocks from the Yagan area of northern Alxa. This paper reveals two periods of magmatism: syenogranite (374.8 Ma) and bimodal intrusive rocks, which consist of gabbro (261.4 Ma), diabase (262.9 Ma) and biotite monzogranite (263.4 Ma). The syenogranite is high-K calc-alkaline and shows enrichments in Th, Zr, Hf and LREEs; depletions in Sr, Nb, Ta, and Ti; and low Mg# values (6.9–13.2); the syenogranite was derived from partial melting of the crust and has volcanic arc characteristics. The gabbro and diabase have similar geochemical characteristics, such as enrichments in Pb, Rb, Sr, Zr, and Hf and depletions in Nb, Ta, and Ti, with positive εHf(t) values (+0.9–+2.7 and +2.6–+3.6, respectively), indicating that they originated from partial melting of depleted mantle and experienced crustal contamination during magma emplacement. The biotite monzogranite shows depletions in Nb, Ta, and Ti and εNd(t) values of -2.6 to −2.4 and resulted from partial melting of the lower crust caused by asthenospheric underplating. The bimodal intrusive rocks formed in a postcollision extensional setting. Combined with previous data, we conclude that northern Alxa was an active continental margin during the late Devonian and that the final closure of the Yagan branch ocean of the PAO occurred prior to the middle Permian.

Abstract:A new tectonic division of the Xing'an-Mongolia orogenic belt (XMOB) in north China has been presented according to our research and a lot of new data of tectonics, geochronology and geochemistry. Four blocks and four sutures have been recognized in the XMOB, including the Erguna (EB), Xing'an-Airgin Sum (XAB), Songliao-Hunshandake (SHB), and Jiamusi (JB), and Xinlin-Xiguitu (XXS), Xilinhot-Heihe (XHS), Mudanjiang (MS) and Ondor Sum-Yongji sutures (OYS). The framework of the XMOB is characterized by a tectonic collage of the blocks and orogenic belts between them. Different Precambrian basements have been found in the blocks, including the Neoproterozoic metamorphic rocks and plutons in the EB, the Neoproterozoic metamorphic rocks in western and eastern of segments of the XAB, Mesoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic metamorphic rocks in middle segments of the XAB, respectively, the Neoproterozoic metamorphic rocks and Mesoproterozoic volcanic rocks and plutons in the SHB, and Neoproterozoic metamorphic rocks in the JB. The XXS resulted from a northwestward subduction of the XAB beneath the EB during the Cambrian, which was followed by the forming of the XHS and OYS in the northwest and south margins of the SHB in the Silurian, respectively. The MS was caused by a westward subduction of the JB beneath the east margin of the SHB during the middle Devonian. The three Cambrian, Silurian and middle Devonian events indicate that the XMOB belongs to a pre-middle Devonian multiple orogenic belt in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). Forming of the XMOB suggests that the southeast part of the Paleo Asian Ocean closed before the middle Devonian. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Precambrian Evolution of the Quanji Block, Northeastern Margin of Tibet: Insights from Zircon U–Pb and Lu–Hf Isotope Compositions

Abstract:The Quanji Block, a cratonic fragment, has been discovered between the north Qaidam HP-UHP metamorphic belt and the Qilian orogenic belt in northwestern China. This fragment has a pre-Neoproterozoic crystalline basement overlain unconformably by Neoproterozoic, Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary strata. Pervasive anatexis of the basement produced extensive leucosomes in mafic and felsic migmatites. Zircons from the leucosomes yielded upper intercept and weighted mean207Pb/206Pb ages of ∼1950Ma, indicating that anatexis occurred in the late Paleoproterozoic, during regional high-grade metamorphism. Hf model ages (TDM2) for these zircons suggest that protoliths of the felsic and mafic migmatites had crustal residence time of ∼2.80 and ∼2.65 Ga, respectively. The basement rocks of the Quanji Block are compositionally similar to those of the Yangtze Craton, and may have been involved in assembly of the late Paleoproterozoic global supercontinent, Columbia.
Proterozoic polymetamorphism in the Quanji Block, northwestern China: Evidence from microtextures, garnet compositions and monazite CHIME ages

Abstract:The Quanji Block, situated close to the triple junction of three major Precambrian terranes in China (i.e., the North China Craton, the Yangtze Block and the Tarim Block), is composed of Precambrian metamorphic crystalline basement and an unmetamorphosed Mesozoic–Paleozoic sedimentary cover; it has been interpreted as a remnant continental fragment. Microtextural relationships, garnet trace element compositions, and monazite CHIME ages in paragneisses, schists and granitic leucosomes show two episodes of regional metamorphism in the Quanji Block basement. The first regional metamorphism and accompaning anatexis took place at ∼1.93Ga; the second regional metamorphism occurred between ∼1.75 and ∼1.71Ga. Mineral compositions of the first metamorphism, including those of monazite, were significantly disturbed by the second event. These two regional metamorphic episodes were most likely linked to assembly and breakup of the supercontinent Columbia, respectively.
Components and metamorphism of the basements of the Qaidam and Oulongbuluke micro-continental blocks, and a tentative interpretation of paleocontinental evolution in NW-Central China

Abstract:The Qaidam and Oulongbuluke micro-continental blocks are geochemically similar to the Yangtze Block, but their metamorphic history are strikingly different from each other. The Delingha Complex and Dakendaban Group in the lower basement of the Oulongbuluke Block underwent upper amphibolite-facies to granulite-facies regional metamorphism and cratonization at ~1.95 Ga and were part of the assembly Columbia supercontinent. The greenschist-facies metamorphism along with the Mesoproterozoic Wandongguo Group at ~1.0 Ga corresponds to the assembly event of the Rodinia supercontinent. This was followed by continental breakup in the late Neoproterozoic and uplift in the Ordovician during the opening and closing of the Proto-Tethys Ocean. The basement of the Qaidam Block is mainly composed of the Mesoproterozoic Baishahe Formation of the Jinshuikou Group in the southern margin, and the Wulongtan Formation of the Shaliuhe Group on the northern margin. These formations were part of the assembly event of the Rodinia supercontinent, and were associated with intrusion of S-type granitoids. During the late Pan-African tectonothemal event (520-480 Ma), the Qaidam Block was subducted and collided with Gondwanaland terranes and was subjected to medium-pressure amphibolite-to granulite-facies metamorphism and HP-UHP metamorphism. Following these metamorphic events, the Block broke up and moved into the Proto-Tethys Ocean, and was subjected to metamorphism during 460-420 Ma due to closing of the Proto-Tethys Ocean. Regional comparisons show that the Oulongbuluke Block has similarities with the Arlashan Block and the Tarim Block as well as Yangtze Block in the Paleoproterozoic basements in principal part, the late Paleoproterozoic cratonization, the assembly of parts of the Rodinia supercontinent and the ~450 Ma tectonothermal event. However, the Qaidam Block has similarity with the North Qinling Block as well as the Qilian Block in the ~500 Ma tectonothemal event in addition to the Mesoproterozoic basement components, responding to assembly event of Rodinia supercontinent and the ~450 Ma tectonothermal event. Accordingly, these blocks can be separately grouped into Tarim-Ouloungbuluke blocks and Qaidam-Qinling blocks. The ~500 Ma and ~450 Ma tectonothermal events that recorded in the Qaidam-Qinling blocks are of different origins.
Mesozoic Subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Plate along the Eastern Margin of the Xing-Meng Orogenic Belt

Abstract:The eastern part of the Xing-Meng Orogenic Belt(XMOB)consists of the Lesser Xing’an-Zhangguangcai Range Orogenic belt,the Bureya-Jiamusi-Khanka Block and the Sikhote-Alin accretionary belt.This area is located between the Paleo-Asian oceanic and Paleo-Pacific tectonic regimes.Recent researches imply that the Paleo-Pacific subduction might have begun since early Permian and influenced the both sides of the Mudanjiang Fault during Triassic,which generated a N-S trending magmatic belt and accretionary complexes,such as the Heilongjiang Complex.In Late Jurassic to Early Cre-taceous,some tectonostratigraphic terranes were produced in Sikhote-Alin,which were then dismembered and migrated northwards in late Early Cretaceous by sinistral strike-slip faults.The continental margin parallel transportion weakened subduction-related magmatism in NE China which was under an extensional setting.However,in Late Cretaceous,the Pa-leo-Pacific subduction was re-activated in the eastern XMOB,which contributed to the magmatism in Sikhote-Alin.
The Xing-Meng Intracontinent Orogenic Belt

Abstract:In this paper, a new concept of "Xing-Meng Intracontinent Orogenic Belt" (XMIOB) is suggested. The Late Paleozoic to Early Mesozoic intra-continental extension and orogenic evolution of the XMIOB are synthesized from the perspective of tectonics, sedimentary formation, magmatism and metamorphism, which provides useful insight into the Late Paleozoic tectonic evolution of XMIOB. According to the Late Paleozoic tectonic framework of mid-western Inner Mongolia, five tectonic units can be recognized, including the Early Carboniferous Erenhot-Hegenshan rift belt (C1EHR), the Late Carboniferous inland sea basin (C2IS), the Early Permian Airgin Sum-Erenhot extensional belt (P-1 AEEB ), the Early-Middle Permian basin-range belt (P1-2 BRB ), and the Late Permian Solonker-Ulan valley extensional belt (P3SWEB). From the Late Carboniferous to Permian, the extensional structures in the XMIOB can be clustered into three stages. The first stage can be found in Erenhot-Airgin Sum area, northern Inner Mongolia, in form of intracontinental rift basin and its marginal delta deposits during 302 similar to 298 Ma. The second stage is characterized by basin-range structure during 290 similar to 260Ma, which are widely distributed in mid-western Inner Mongolia. The third stage can be observed at Solon Obo, southern Inner Mongolia and Ulan valley in the south of Ondor Sum, representing a Red Sea-type oceanic basin in active rifting zone during 260 similar to 250Ma. The extension-related magmatism during the Late Paleozoic includes four phases : 1) The Early Carboniferous Hegenshan ophiolite phase, which developed on the basement of pre-Cambrian or Early Paleozoic orogenic belt, reflects deep magmatic process in the continent crust; 2) The igneous rock originated from the Late Carboniferous Daqing pasture phase are widely distributed along the north orogenic belt, characterized by bimodal intrusive and volcanic rocks that mainly consist of mafic and felsic magma; 3) The Early Carboniferous Dashizai phase formed various rocks including bimodal volcanic, intrusive and alkaline rocks; 4) The Late Permian-Triassic Solonker phase is characterized by continental margin ophiolite or the rock assemblage of mafic and ultramafic rock, which results from an active rift zone in during the asthenosphere upwelling. The XMIOB underwent two phases of structure deformation. The first phase, in form of large scale fold deformation of the Late Paleozoic strata, gave rise to shortening of the basin-ridge structure belt. The second one produced strong shear deformation along the boundary of the basin-range structure belt, accompanied by eastward extrusion structure due to a passive closure resulted from the remote tectonic effect of the North Mongolia-Okhotsk orogenic belt in the north and the Dabie-Qinling central orogenic belt in the south. Two periods of metamorphism can be identified in the XMIOB since the Late Paleozoic. The Early period is represented by special low pressure and high temperature metamorphism that records intra-continental extensional process during the Carboniferous. The latter metamorphism is characterized by regional scale greenschist facies metamorphism and middle-low pressure metamorphism along the tectonic boundary from the Late Permian to Early Triassic.
Forming Proterozoic basement within eastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt: Evidence from zircon U-Pb-Hf-O isotopes

Abstract:As part of the mosaic of micro-continents within the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB), the Xing'an-Airgin Sum Block (XAB) features increasingly-recognized Meso-Neoproterozoic geological records. However, the origin, temporal-spatial distribution of ancient materials, and their roles in crust evolution remain to debate. This paper presents an integrated study of zircon U-Pb ages and Hf-O isotopes for Mesoproterozoic and Paleozoic granites from the Erenhot region of central Inner Mongolia, along eastern CAOB. The intrusion of 1450 Ma syenogranite denotes that the Precambrian basement of XAB extends from Sonid Zuoqi westward to Erenhot. The 384 and 281 Ma monzogranites containing Mesoproterozoic xenocrystic zircons possess Proterozoic-dominant two-stage Hf model ages, further suggesting the wide existence of Proterozoic crust beneath western XAB. Cyclic Proterozoic crustal growth and reworking seem to show close linkages with the orogenesis during relevant supercontinent cycles. 1450–1360 Ma juvenile crustal growth at Erenhot and synchronous ancient crust reworking at Sonid Zuoqi and Abagaqi were likely resulted from retreating subduction involved in Columbia breakup, while 1.2–1.0 Ga reworking and 0.9–0.7 Ga growth events within the Erenhot basement might respond to assembly and breakup of Rodinia, respectively. Besides, our work confirms that reworking of Neoproterozoic crust played important roles during Paleozoic multi-stage accretion of CAOB.

Abstract:The Xing'an-Airgin Sum Block (XAB) is located in central and northern Inner Mongolia, North China, and belongs to one of the oldest blocks in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). Previous studies have shown that there are Mesoproterozoic granites in the XAB; however, the formation process of the Precambrian basement, and also the tectonic evolution and origin of the block are unclear. In this work, the Mesoproterozoic and early Neoproterozoic stratigraphic sequences, ages and the related sedimentary basin types of the western XAB are reported for the first time. Our study reveals that the Mesoproterozoic to early Neoproterozoic stratigraphic sequence contains the Baoyintu Group and Airgin Sum Group with respective depositional ages of 1516-1392 Ma, and 1237-921 Ma. Sedimentation analysis suggests that the Baoyintu Group and the Airgin Sum Group formed in the coastal marine environment with clastic and carbonate provenances and the shallow marine clastic sedimentary environment, respectively. The age distribution patterns of detrital zircons indicate that there were two different types of sedimentary basins, including two convergent basins formed in similar to 1400 and similar to 930 Ma, and a collisional basin developed in similar to 1237 Ma. However, the 1392-1379 Ma syenogranites and alkali-feldspar granites, which are geochemically similar to A-type granites, were generated by the partial melting of mixed Paleo- and Mesoproterozoic crustal materials in an extensional setting. The newly identified early Neoproterozoic I-type granite (921 Ma) was derived from reworking of the Paleo- to Mesoproterozoic crustal source in a hydrous, garnet-free and plagioclase residual condition. These geochemical signatures, coupled with the three sedimentary stages included on the block, suggest that the 1.4-1.3 Ga period recorded an extensional regime at a convergent continental margin (e.g., back-arc basin), whereas the early Neoproterozoic period was likely controlled by a continental arc setting. In summary, the tectonic evolution process of the XAB documented by three sedimentary and two magmatic events could be its response to the supercontinent cycle from the Nuna breakup to the Rodinia assembly.

Paleo-Mesoproterozoic magmatic-sedimentary events in eastern Bainaimiao micro-block: Implications for Precambrian tectonic evolution of a fragment from Columbia supercontinent

Abstract:Identifying tectonic positions and origins of Precambrian micro-blocks within the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) is essential for revealing global paleogeography and evolution of the early Earth. The Bainaimiao micro-block in the southeastern CAOB preserves multistage geologic records which can better reveal Precambrian tectonic history of micro-blocks within the Phanerozoic accretionary orogenic belt. This study presents integrated research of geochronology, geochemistry, and zircon Hf isotopes on the Chenjiatun metamorphic complex in the eastern Bainaimiao micro-block, which consists of meta-sedimentary rocks (plagioclase gneisses and mica schists), amphibolites and two-mica granites. The protoliths of amphibolites, two-mica granites and meta-sedimentary rocks were formed at 1.75 Ga, 1.38 Ga and 1.39–1.34 Ga, respectively, suggesting that they represent Paleo-Mesoproterozoic basement of the Bainaimiao micro-block. The detrital zircon age spectra of meta-sedimentary rocks show two representative age peaks at 1.80 Ga and 1.40 Ga, with zircon Hf isotopes varying from −11.11 to +10.67. Characteristic mostly positive zircon Hf isotopes and geochemical features of the Chenjiatun complex indicates that the Bainaimiao micro-block probably has tectonic affinity with the Laurentia-Baltica continent. Paleoproterozoic amphibolites with positive εHf(t) (+5.67 to +15.42) were derived from metasomatized mantle wedge mixed with sediment melts. They are characterized by arc-like geochemistry such as high Th/Yb (0.73–2.77), enrichment in LILEs and depletion in HFSEs (eg. Nb and Ta), similar to coeval arc magmatism in the Laurentia-Baltica continent, which indicate the Bainaimiao micro-block was possibly in a subduction convergent setting in the late Paleoproterozoic. By contrast, Mesoproterozoic two-mica granites, with mostly positive εHf(t) (−0.29 to +11.53), belong to typical S-type granites and could be generated from partial melting of meta-pelites with participation peritectic garnets. These two-mica granites, together with ∼1.40 Ga juvenile A-type grantioids from nearby and other Precambrian micro-blocks in the southern CAOB, exhibit relatively high alkalis and HFSEs contents, young Hf model ages (1.50–1.40 Ga) and were generated at high-temperature environment. These findings reveals that the Bainaimiao micro-block was in an extensional setting at 1.40 Ga coeval with the breakup evolution of the Columbia supercontinent.

Paleozoic Sedimentary Processes and Magmatism in Zamenwude Area, Mongolia, and Their Implications for Tectonic Evolution of the Xingmeng Orogenic Belt

Abstract:The Xingmeng orogenic belt is the eastern part of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, and there are two main views on its tectonic evolution: one is that it was formed in the Early Triassic after the continuous subduction-collision process of the Paleo-Asian Ocean during the whole Paleozoic; the other is that it was an intracontinental orogenic belt evolved from an early Middle Paleozoic orogenic belt formed by a subduction-collision process during the closure of Paleo-Asian Ocean before the Late Devonian, which experienced an intracontinental extension and closure in the Carboniferous-Permian Period. The occurrence of various Paleozoic sedimentary and magmatic rocks in the Zamenude area in the southeastern Mongolia can provide a typical case for resolving the above disputes. In this paper, sedimentary and magmatic rocks exposed in Zhamenwude area are studied through comprehensive methods such as sedimentology, geochronology and geochemistry, and the following results are obtained: (1) According to the geochronology and lithology characteristics of the main rock assemblages in the study area, they can be divided into three types: the first type is the Middle Silurian intrusive rocks represented by biotite monzogranite; the second type is a set of coarse clastic-volcanic sedimentary cycles in the lower part of the Middle Devonian stratigraphic sequence; the third one is the Permian thick volcanic-sedimentary series unconformably deposited on the early orogenic belt. Tectonically, the three-rock assemblages are formed in a continental marginal arc during the subduction stage, a superimposed basin during the collisional stage, and a rift basin during the Late Paleozoic intracontinental extension superimposed on the previous orogenic lithosphere, respectively. (2) The Paleozoic crustal thickness trends estimated from detrital and magmatic zircons in the study area reveal that the subduction-collision processes can be divided into four stages: a thickened crust during 500 similar to 425Ma; a thinned crust caused by the post-collision extension process during 425 similar to 375Ma; another thickened crust during 375 similar to 325Ma; and another thinned crust during 325 similar to 275Ma, which is correspondent to the stage of extensive and intense Late Carboniferous to Early Permian magmatism, indicating that the tectonic background of the magmatic activity was regional extension rather than compression during this period. (3) Our study indicates that the Xingmeng orogenic belt can extend to the Zhamenwude area, which experienced two tectonic evolution processes, namely the Early to Middle Paleozoic accretionary orogeny and the Late Paleozoic superimposed intracontinental orogeny. As a result, our studies provide new data for the understanding of the two stages tectonic development of the Xingmeng orogenic belt.
Late Paleozoic–Early Mesozoic magmatic history of central Inner Mongolia, China: Implications for the tectonic evolution of the Xingmeng Orogenic Belt, the southeastern segment of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt

Abstract:Abstract The tectonic setting and location of the southernmost boundary of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) in the Late Paleozoic–Early Mesozoic Era and the history evolution for the Xingmeng Orogenic Belt (XMOB) are sources of debate within the scientific community. This paper presents new geochronological, petrological, and geochemical data for Late Paleozoic–Early Mesozoic intrusions from the Siziwangqi region in the southeastern CAOB and discusses the tectonic setting for that area. Using zircon LA-MC-ICPMS U–Pb dating, intrusions can be broadly grouped as Late Carboniferous amphibolite with an age of 323.1 ± 3.4 Ma; Middle–Late Permian granitoids with ages of 271.3 ± 1.5 Ma, 261.3 ± 3.8 Ma, 260.6 ± 4.8 Ma, 259.9 ± 3.5 Ma, 253.3 ± 4.8 Ma, and 249.6 ± 4.8 Ma; Early Triassic K-feldspar granite with an age of 235.0 ± 1.8 Ma. These studies, by interaction of regional geology, provide new constraints on the tectonic evolution of the southeastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt during the Late Paleozoic–Early Mesozoic, and we predict five stages of tectonic evolution during the Late Paleozoic–Early Mesozoic: (1) the Early Carboniferous–Early Permian (>298 Ma), which is the active continental margin stage and the exit of the back-arc basin during the Late Carboniferous; (2) the Early Permian–Middle Permian (298–271 Ma), where there was continued subduction of Paleo-Asian oceanic lithosphere and the Solonker ophiolite emplacement at the end of Early Permian; (3) the Middle Permian (271–261 Ma), which had continent–continent collision between the Siberian Plate and the North China Craton; (4) the Middle Permian–Middle Triassic (261–235 Ma), which was the collisional orogeny stage with few intermountain basin deposition and the disappearance of marine strata; and (5) Late Triassic (

Abstract:Micro-continents with Precambrian basement are developed in the Central Asian orogenic belt. In southern Mongolia, the Toto Shan and South Gobi miro-continents are characterized by Neoproterozoic magmatism. The South Gobi micro-continent might extend into China, as evidenced by the discovery of Neoproterozoic granitoid in Yagan area. However, the distribution of the South Gobi micro-continent is not well constrained in China. Regional geological data reveal that there are some Proterozoic rocks in Yingba area of western Inner Mongolia. They are regarded as the relict blocks in and around the Yingba granitoid pluton and are mainly composed of gneiss, quartzite, mica and quartz schist and carbonate. In a Proterozoic block, the felsic gneiss composed of plagioclase, quartz and biotite gave complex U-Pb age results from the LA-ICP-MS zircon dating. The zircon cores with the igneous origin provided a wide range of 207Pb/206Pb ages from 2.5 Ga to 1.0 Ga, while the igneous zircon mandes generated a weighted mean206Pb/238U age of 417.2 Ma ± 3.5 Ma, indicating an early Paleozoic tectonic event. In another block, the gneiss is crosscut by leucogranite veins, one of which gave a weighted mean206Pb/238U age of 905.2 Ma ± 6.1 Ma. The age is close to the emplacement time (916 Ma ± 16 Ma) of Neoproterozoic gneissic granite pluton in Yagan. Therefore, the South Gobi micro-continent extended southward at least to the Yagan-Yingba area in China and were strongly modified and destroyed by the Phanerozoic tectonic-igneous activities.
Permian Paleogeography of the Eastern CAOB: Paleomagnetic Constraints from Volcanic Rocks in Central Eastern Inner Mongolia, NE China

Abstract:We carried out a paleomagnetic investigation on Permian volcanic rocks from central eastern Inner Mongolia, NE China, in order to identify the paleoposition of the North China and Songliao‐Xilinhot blocks during Permo‐Carboniferous times and thereby define the spatial‐temporal history of the eastern Paleo‐Asian Ocean (PAO). Two prefolding magnetization components were isolated from the Sanmianjing and Elitu Formations (~283–266 Ma) along the northern margin of North China block (NMNCB) and the Dashizhai Formation (~280 Ma) in the Songliao‐Xilinhot block (SXB). These two results suggest paleolatitudes of ~4.9°N for the SXB and ~22.3°N for the NMNCB. Previously published results are classified according to recently proposed models and evaluated for the influence of inclination shallowing. Combined with earlier multidisciplinary studies, we propose a tentative paleogeographic reconstruction model for the eastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) during the Late Carboniferous to Early Triassic times. Siberia was situated at middle‐high paleolatitudes (~45°–65°N), and the Central Mongolia‐Erguna and South Mongolia‐Xing'an blocks had a middle latitude (~30°–45°N) from the Late Carboniferous to Early Permian. By the Late Permian to Early Triassic (~250 Ma), there was no significant latitudinal difference between the eastern CAOB blocks. Final closure of the eastern PAO along both the Hegenshan‐Heihe and Solonker sutures took place followed by the formation of Cinamuria.
Detrital Zircon Ages of the Mesoproterozoic Metasedimentary Rocks in the Southern Yili Block: Implications for Tectonic Affinities of the Microcontinents in SW Central Asian Orogenic Belt

Abstract:The origins and Paleogeographic reconstruction of the Precambrian microcontinents in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) are essential for understanding the continental crustal evolution and mechanism of accretionary orogeny. The Yili Block is one of the Precambrian microcontinents in SW CAOB and is a key component of the Kazakhstan microcontinent whose amalgamation is not yet well understood. In this study, we present detrital zircon U-Pb ages of the metasedimentary rocks from the Tekesi Group in the southern Yili Block to constrain its Precambrian history and tectonic affinity. A total of 540 concordant U-Pb zircon ages from the metasedimentary rocks defined dominantly Meso- to Paleoproterozoic detritus (1.1-1.8 Ga) with minor early Paleoproterozoic to Neoarchean and Neoproterozoic components. These results are comparable to those obtained from the northern Yili, Chinese Central Tianshan and Kyrgyz North Tianshan blocks. On the basis of careful analysis on the inner textures of dated zircons, and comparing these new results with the previous studies on magmatic rocks, it is suggested that (1) the Tekesi Group most likely deposited during the latest Mesoproterozoic-earliest Neoproterozoic (1079-963 Ma); (2) the provenances of the Meso- to late Paleoproterozoic detritus might be in situ basement rocks of the Yili Block, or the Chinese Central Tianshan, Kyrgyz North Tianshan and even exotic cratonic plates (e.g., Central Australia, Laurentia); and (3) the early Paleoproterozoic to Neoarchean components may have been derived from old cratonic plates (e.g., Tarim, Siberia). In combination with the available detrital zircon ages and regional stratigraphic data, we propose that the southern Yili Block has close tectonic affinities with the northern Yili Block, Chinese Central Tianshan, and Kyrgyz North Tianshan, and these ribbon-like microcontinents once situated on the continental margins of the constituent cratonic plates (e.g., Tarim, Siberia, Central Australia, Laurentia) during the assembly and break-up of the Columbia and Rodinia supercontinents, therefore they may offer important clues for global reconstructions of supercontinent cycles.
First Paleomagnetic Result From the Early Permian Volcanic Rocks in Northeastern Mongolia: Evolutional Implication for the Paleo‐Asian Ocean and the Mongol‐Okhotsk Ocean

Abstract:The Mongolia Block (MOB), which is now sandwiched by the Siberia Craton (SIB) and the North China Craton (NCC), plays an essential role for understanding the late stage evolution of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean and the early stage evolution of the Mongol‐Okhotsk Ocean. Here, a paleomagnetic study is performed for the first time on the Early Permian volcanic strata in the Bayandun region of northeastern Mongolia and the data are used to uncover the late Paleozoic paleoposition of the MOB and better understand the evolution of both oceans. Zircon U‐Pb dating results reveal an emplacement age of 283 ± 3 Ma for the studied volcanic strata. Rock magnetic analyses identify that titanium‐poor magnetite is the main magnetic carrier. Characteristic remanent magnetization isolated from seven sites shows consistent reverse polarity, corresponding to the Permo‐Carboniferous (Kiaman) Reverse Superchron. Site‐mean directions pass fold tests, and an Early Permian paleomagnetic pole is calculated for the MOB at λ/φ = −14.9°N/76.8°E (A95 = 5.7°) with N = 7 sites. Comparison with published Permian paleomagnetic poles from surrounding blocks indicates that (1) the MOB should have welded with the NCC before the Early Permian or was at least very close to it. (2) The welded MOB‐NCC was separated from the SIB by the Mongol‐Okhotsk Ocean with ~30° latitudinal difference during the Early Permian. (3) Significant vertical‐axis strike‐slip related rotations occurred within and along the margins of the unified MOB‐NCC due to the far‐field stress effect produced by posterior orogenic events.

Abstract:<p>The NE China region involves a complex accretionary belt formed by multiple stages of assembly of micro-blocks from the Paleozoic to Mesozoic, the tectonics of which provides important clues on the evolution of the East Asian continental margin. With a view to evaluating the micro-block evolution in NE China, we used gravity and magnetic methods to analyze the geophysical characteristics of the micro-blocks and their boundaries. Combining with regional geology, paleomagnetism and paleontology, we reconstructed the micro-block assembly history in the eastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt. Five Paleozoic to Mesozoic micro-blocks are recognized in NE China: the Erguna, Xing'an, Songnen, Jiamusi and Nadanhada, and their boundaries show significant differences in gravity and magnetic fields. The boundary between the Erguna Block (EB) and the Xing'an Block (XB) shows as a continuous tectonic line in the gravity field, whereas the one between the XB and the Songnen Block (SB) exhibits a rather discrete but strong magnetic anomaly belt. The boundary between the SB and the Jiamusi Block (JB) is characterized by both distinct gravity and magnetic anomalies. The Nadanhada Micro-block (NMB) appears as an independent micro-block in the fourth-order detail field of the Bouguer gravity anomaly, where it shows as a short axis or circinate structure in this anomaly field. The Paleozoic to Mesozoic tectonic evolution of these micro-blocks in NE China is closely related to five sutures in the eastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt. The Xinlin-Xiguitu Suture was first formed at ~500 Ma, leading to the assembly of the EB and the XB, the Heihe-Hegenshan Suture was formed at 320–290 Ma, marking the amalgamation of the XB and the SB, the Mudanjiang-Yilan Suture was formed at ~200 Ma, marking the collision of the JB and the SB. The Paleo-Asian Ocean closed during 250–230 Ma in a scissor style. The subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Ocean was initiated at ~200 Ma. Based on the deep structural architecture imaged from gravity and magnetic anomalies, we propose an evolutionary model of the micro-blocks in the NE China, which provides important insights into the tectonic evolution of the NE China region during the Paleozoic to Mesozoic.</p>

Abstract:The Tuva–Mongolia collage system comprises the Tuva Block (TVB) and the Mongolia Block (MOB), which are located in the eastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). The timing of amalgamation of the TVB and MOB is unclear. To address this, we conducted a combined geochronological and paleomagnetic study of the andesitic Member 1 of the Baoligaomiao Formation, in the southeastern MOB. The andesites have a U–Pb zircon age of 314.2 ± 1.7 Ma. A total of 65 paleomagnetic samples from 10 sites were subjected to stepwise thermal demagnetization and had stable magnetic signals. After removal of the low‐temperature viscous components acquired in the recent geomagnetic field, stable high‐temperature components (HTCs) were isolated from most samples. The HTCs passed the fold, conglomerate, and reversal tests, demonstrating their primary origins. Moreover, these andesites have averaged out paleosecular variations. The paleomagnetic pole for the MOB is located at 30.5°N/14.6°E (A95 = 7.4°) at ca. 314 Ma. Combining our new results with published late Paleozoic paleomagnetic poles for the MOB and TVB suggests that the two blocks were distant from each other during the Middle Devonian and merged into a single TVB–MOB by ca. 315 Ma. The Devonian–Carboniferous paleomagnetic, paleobiogeographic, and geological data indicate that the multiple microcontinents in the CAOB were separated by numerous ocean basins during the Middle Devonian. At ca. 315 Ma, the TVB–MOB, Kazakhstan, and Siberia were amalgamated to form a ribbon‐like continent, which was associated with the evolution of the Mongol–Okhotsk Ocean. Abstract:Based mainly on field geological observation and geochronologic data, six tectonic units have been recognized in western Inner Mongolia (China), including, from south to north: North China Craton (NCC), Southern Orogenic Belt (SOB), Hunshandake Block (HB), Northern Orogenic Belt (NOB), South Mongolia microcontinent (SMM), and Southern margin of Ergun Block (SME), suggesting that the tectonic framework of the CAOB in western Inner Mongolia is characterized by an accretion of different blocks and orogenic belts. The SOB includes, from north to south, fold belt, mélange, arc-pluton belt, and retroarc foreland basin, representing a southern subduction–collision system between the NCC and HB blocks during 500–440Ma. The NOB consists also of four units: arc-pluton belt, mélange, foreland molasse basin, and fold belt, from north to south, representing a northern subduction–collision system between the HB and SMM blocks during 500–380Ma. From the early Paleozoic, the Paleo-Asian oceanic domains subducted to the north and the south, resulting in the forming of the SOB and the NOB in 410Ma and 380Ma, respectively. This convergent orogenic system, therefore, constrained the consumption process of the Paleo-Asian Ocean in western Inner Mongolia. A double subduction–collision accretionary process is the dominant geodynamic feature for the eastern part of the CAOB during the early to middle Paleozoic.
