Abstract:The microwave irradiation based on Fenton process was developed for treatment of phenol in water. The operation conditions of treatment are optimized. The using life of catalyst-modified Al2O3 and the treatment kinetic are studied. The results show that under the optimum condition of phenol concentration of 100 mg/L, 1.0 ml H2O2 (3% (w/w)), 3.0 g Al2O3, microwave power 400 W, and irradiation of 5 min, phenol removal rate can come up to 97.75%. Phenol removal rate can decrease under strong acidic condition. The catalyst can be reused more than 10 times remaining high phenol removal rate. Kinetics study indicates that the treatment process accord with the first order reaction kinetic, although it can be divided two stages, with the kinetics equations given as follows respectively: InC = -0.0915t + 4.6524 (r=0.98) and InC=-0.7967t + 4.9388 (r=0.99), reaction rate constant 0.0915 min(-1) and 0.7967 min(-1). Phenol removal rate increases suddenly from 3 min to 3.5 min. According to the further investigation, use of process studied in the paper for treatment of phenol is more effective than that of simple H(2)o(2) oxidation, Fenton oxidation, like Fenton oxidation, microwave irradiation assisted H2O2 without catalyst, catalyst adsorption, microwave irradiation without H2O2, and microwave irradiation assisted Fenton, which is attributed to the cooperation of Fenton oxidation with microwave induced activity.
