Abstract:Abstract We present a comprehensive study on anisotropic magnetocaloric porperties of the van der Waals weak-itinerant ferromagnet Fe3−x GeTe2 that features gate-tunable room-temperature ferromagnetism in few-layer device. Intrinsic magnetocrystalline anisotropy is observed to be temperature-dependent and most likely favors the long-range magnetic order in thin Fe3−x GeTe2 crsytal. The magnetic entropy change ΔS M also reveals an anisotropic characteristic between H//ab and H//c, which could be well scaled into a universal curve. The peak value $$-\Delta {S}_{M}^{{\max }}$$ −ΔSMmax of 1.20 J kg−1 K−1 and the corresponding adiabatic temperature change ΔT ad of 0.66 K are deduced from heat capacity with out-of-plane field change of 5 T. By fitting of the field-dependent parameters of $$-\Delta {S}_{M}^{{\max }}$$ −ΔSMmax and the relative cooling power RCP, it gives $$-{\rm{\triangle }}{S}_{M}^{{\max }}$$ −∆SMmax ∝ H n with n = 0.603(6) and RCP ∝ H m with m = 1.20(1) when H//c. Given the high and tunable T c , Fe3−x GeTe2 crystals are of interest for fabricating the heterostructure-based spintronics device.

Abstract:Intercalated transition metal dichalcogenides have been widely used to study the magnetic and magnetoelectric transport properties in a strong anisotropic and spin–orbit coupling environments. In this study, ferromagnetic FeTa 3 S 6 (also known as Fe 1/3 TaS 2 ) single crystals were grown by using the chemical vapor transport method, and its magnetic and magnetoelectric transport properties were measured. The results show that FeTa 3 S 6 has ferromagnetic ordered below 37K, with sharp switching of magnetization, butterfly-shaped double-peak magnetoresistance and anomalous Hall effect, and the magnetization and resistance have strong anisotropy. When a magnetic field is oriented parallel to the c-axis, the magnetoresistance exceeds 10% at a temperature of 10K, and negative magnetoresistance is generated when the magnetic field is larger than the switching field. When the direction of the magnetic field of 9T rotates from out-of-plane to in-plane, the anisotropic magnetoresistance exceeds 40%, and the angle-dependent Hall resistance presents a novel trend, which may be due to the existence of a topological Hall effect or other magnetic structures in the FeTa 3 S 6 thin film. When the magnetic field of 9T rotates in the ab-plane of the sample, the in-plane anisotropic magnetoresistance conforms to the form of sin 2 φ. The experimental results of this study provide important information for the study of magnetic and magnetoelectric transport properties of intercalated transition metal dichalcogenides.

Abstract:Magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of high-purity, giant magnetocaloric polycrystalline and single-crystalline Fe2P are investigated. Fe2P displays a moderate magnetic entropy change which spans over 70 K and the presence of strong magnetization anisotropy proves this system is not fully itinerant but displays a mix of itinerant and localized magnetism. The properties of pure Fe2P are compared to those of giant magnetocaloric (Fe,Mn)2(P,A) compounds helping understand the exceptional characteristics shown by the latter which are so promising for heat pump and energy conversion applications.

Abstract:In this work, amorphous Fe-Co-P films prepared by electrodeposition are found to exhibit dense microstructures with amorphous grains. Through a pulse electrodeposition synthesis route, complex microstructures containing nano-sized grains are obtained in the amorphous alloy films. The nanostructured Fe-Co-P amorphous alloys show superior soft magnetic and magnetocaloric properties as compared with those of other iron-based soft magnetic amorphous alloys reported to date. The coercive field of samples can be as small as 1.6 Oe at room temperature. The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of the ternary amorphous alloys has been investigated by evaluating the magnetic entropy changes, |ΔSM |, from their temperature-dependent magnetization behaviors. The |ΔSM| values are as high as 1.846 J kg-1 K-1 with an applied magnetic field of 10 kOe. With a temperature span of 90 K, the refrigerant capacity of samples can be as high as 118.64 J kg-1. The nanostructure enabled giant MCE in Fe-Co-P amorphous alloys is discussed.
Effect of Co and Fe on the inverse magnetocaloric properties of Ni-Mn-Sn

Abstract:At certain compositions Ni-Mn-$X$ Heusler alloys ($X$: group IIIA-VA elements) undergo martensitic transformations, and many of them exhibit inverse magnetocaloric effects. In alloys where $X$ is Sn, the isothermal entropy change is largest among the Heusler alloys, particularly in Ni$_{50}$Mn$_{37}$Sn$_{13}$ where it reaches a value of 20 Jkg$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$ for a field of 5T. We substitute Ni with Fe and Co in this alloy, each in amounts of 1 at% and 3 at% to perturb the electronic concentration and examine the resulting changes in the magnetocaloric properties. Increasing both Fe and Co concentrations causes the martensitic transition temperature to decrease, whereby the substitution by Co at both compositions or substituting 1 at% Fe leads to a decrease in the magnetocaloric effect. On the other hand, the magnetocaloric effect in the alloy with 3 at% Fe leads to an increase in the value of the entropy change to about 30 Jkg$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$ at 5T.

Abstract:It is well known that the temperature dependence of the effective magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy obeys the $l(l+1)/2$ power law of magnetization in the Callen-Callen theory. Therefore, according to the Callen-Callen theory, the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy is assumed to be zero at the critical temperature where the magnetization is approximately zero. This study estimates the temperature dependence of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy by integrating the magnetization versus magnetic field ($M$--$H$) curves, and found that the magnetocrystalline anisotropy is still finite even above the Curie temperature in the uniaxial anisotropy, whereas this does not appear in the cubic anisotropy case. The origin is the fast reduction of the anisotropy field, which is the magnetic field required to saturate the magnetization along the hard axis, in the case of cubic anisotropy. Therefore, the magnetization anisotropy and anisotropic magnetic susceptibility, those are the key factors of magnetic anisotropy, could not be established in the case of cubic anisotropy. In addition, the effect of magnetocrystalline anisotropy on magnetocaloric properties, as the difference between the entropy change curves of AlFe$_{2}$B$_{2}$ appears above the Curie temperature, which is in good agreement with a previous experimental study. This is proof of magnetic anisotropy at slightly above Curie temperature.

Enhanced Magnetocaloric Effects of Ni-Fe-Mn-Sn Alloys Involving Strong Metamagnetic Behavior

Abstract:Very recently, we reported that Fe-doped Ni50-xFexMn38.0Sn12.0 alloys exhibited enhanced magnetization difference Delta M between the martensite and austenite phases. Of note is that the alloy with x = 4.2 exhibits a strong metamagnetic transition behavior, i.e. magnetic-field-induced reverse martensite transformation, which is favorable for the magnetocaloric effects. Here, the enhanced magnetocaloric effect related to metamagnetic transition in the selected Ni35.8Fe4.2Mn38.0Sn12.0 alloy was reported. This alloy exhibits a high magnetization difference Delta M of similar to 58 A.m(2)/kg between martensite and austenite phases owing to the magnetic and structural coupling. The doping of Fe leads to a strong metamagnetic behavior, with austenite peak temperature shift Delta A(p)/Delta H reaching -2.4 K/T. As a result, the magnetic entropy change Delta S-m increases rapidly from a starting critical magnetic field similar to 0.2 T and then saturates at various finishing critical magnetic fields, depending on the working temperature. A sizable peak DSm of 33.8 J/kg.K with a working temperature interval of 7 K is obtained under a magnetic field of 5 T, which is responsible for a high relative cooling power RCP of 237 J/kg. These results suggest that Ni45.8Fe4.2Mn38.0Sn12.0 alloy may act as a potential solid-state magnetic refrigerant. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Large Magnetocaloric Effect and Magnetoresistance in Fe and Co Co‐Doped Ni‐Mn‐Al Heusler Alloys

Abstract:The Ni40Co10−xFexMn33Al17 (x = 4, 6, 8) alloys are prepared by arc‐melting method. The crystallographic structure, magnetic and magnetoresistance properties are systematically studied. The large magnetic change is obtained across the martensitic transformation from the ferromagnetic austenite phase to weak‐magnetic martensite phase. With the increase in Fe/Co ratio, the martensite transformation temperature shifts to the lower temperature. The large values of magnetoresistance of 33.3, 25.7, and 13.1% are achieved at the field of 3 T for x = 4, x = 6, and x = 8 alloys around the martensitic transformation, respectively. These results indicate that Ni‐Fe‐Co‐Mn‐Al alloy provides the motive power for further research in practical applications.

Abstract:Magnetostriction and its inverse effect (also referred to as a magnetomechanical effect) in the Tb0.3Dy0.7Fe2 alloy have been investigated based on the three dimensional Stoner–Wohlfarth model in this paper. The solutions of direction cosines of magnetization under a compressive stress and a field both applied along the [112] axis have been obtained by following a conventional minimization procedure in which the nonlinear equations for equilibrium conditions have been solved numerically. With a more accurate computation presented here, some new theoretical results have been achieved. These results are in good agreement with experimental observations reported previously. In the demagnetized state the resultant anisotropy for the alloy is determined by the combination of the magnetocrystalline and stress-induced anisotropy energies, and degenerates from cubic into uniaxial at a critical stress. When a field is applied to the alloy along the [112] axis, the alloy under the compressive stress is more difficult to magnetize and can attain a maximum change in bulk magnetostriction at the critical stress. The main reason for the large bulk magnetostriction is that the fractional occupancy of the [1¯1¯1] or [111¯]-oriented domains increases from 1/8 to 1/2 with the stress. This more accurate computation has been proposed for similar investigations and the results will also be helpful for a better understanding of the magnetostriction in materials such as the FeGa alloys.

Abstract:Magnetostructural transition from ferromagnetic orthorhombic phase to paramagnetic hexagonal phase can be obtained by chemically alloying appropriate amount of Fe2Ge into MnNiSi. The magnetostructural transition temperature is tunable in a wide temperature range of about 280 K. Saturation moment of the ferromagnetic orthorhombic phase increases from 2.62 μB/f.u. to 3.17 μB/f.u. with Fe2Ge-doping. The magnetostructural transition is accompanied by a large change of magnetization over 80 Am2/kg under magnetic field of 5 T. Relatively large magnetic entropy changes and working temperature ranges were observed in the vicinity of room temperature. Our findings suggest that MnNiSi-Fe2Ge material system is a promising platform for tunable magnetostructural transition and the associated magnetocaloric effect.
Structure, Magnetic Properties and Magnetocaloric Effects of Fe 50 Mn 15− X Co X Ni 35 Alloys

Abstract:Fe50Mn15−x Co x Ni35 (x=0, 1, 3, 5, 7) alloys were prepared by arc melting under purified argon atmosphere. The ingots were homogenized at 930°C for 90 h followed by water quenching. The crystal structure, magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effects of the alloys were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and MPMS-7-type SQUID. The results show that all samples still maintained a single γ-(Fe, Ni)-type phase structure. With the increase of the content of Co, the Curie temperatures of these alloys increased and exhibited a second-order magnetic transition from ferromagnetic (FM) to paramagnetic (PM) state near Curie temperature. The maximum magnetic entropy change and the relative cooling power of Fe50Mn10Co5Ni35 alloy was 2.55 J/kg·K and 181 J/kg, respectively, for an external field change of 5 T. Compared with rare earth metal Gd, Fe50Mn15−x Co x Ni35 series of alloys have obvious advantage in resource price; their Curie temperatures can be tuned to near room temperature, maintain a relatively large magnetic entropy change at the same time and they are a type of potential magnetic refrigeration materials near room temperature.
Effect of Partial Metamagnetic and Magnetic Transition Coupling on the Magnetocaloric Effect of Ni-Mn-Sn-Fe Alloy

Abstract:For Ni-Mn-Z based (Z = Sn, In, Sb) alloys, the martensite transformation (MT) and magnetic transition in austenite state create opposite magnetic cooling effect, which offsets each other when the first-order MT (FOMT) coincides with the second-order magnetic transition (SOMT). In the present study, two successive magnetization peaks are introduced in a Ni48.4Fe1.1Mn38.5Sn12.0 alloy by creation of a partial overlap between reverse MT and magnetic transition in the austenite phase with 1.1 at.% Fe-doping. In addition, significant enhancement of the magnetization difference (Delta M) between martensite/austenite phases is achieved. Consequently, an inverse magnetocaloric effect (IMCE) associated with a positive isothermal magnetic entropy change (Delta S-M) of 9.6 J/kg.K and a working temperature interval (Delta T-FWHM) of 306-314 K is found under an external magnetic field of 5.0 T in the reverse MT and T-C(A) temperature range. This IMCE is followed by a conventional magnetocaloric effect (CMCE) with a negative Delta S-M of -2.7 J/kg.K and Delta T-FWHM of 316-339 K under 5.0 T. By taking advantage of these two successive MCEs using a special designed device, large caloric cooling effect with enhanced working temperature interval may be of interesting for practical room-temperature refrigeration applications.
Peculiarity of magnetocaloric and magnetoresistance effects in Ni–Mn–Sn–Fe alloy with successive metamagnetic structural transitions

Abstract:Magnetocaloric and magnetoresistance properties originated from a metamagnetic structural transition were investigated in a Fe-doped Ni46.8Mn38.1Sn11.6Fe3.5 alloy. After annealing, the alloy exhibited the intermartensite phase that contributed to the multiple abrupt magnetization and resistivity changes during heating process of martensite transformation. As a result, three successive magnetic entropy change ΔSM peaks of 10.7, 14.5 and 9.7 J/kg·K at temperatures 275, 279 and 285 K respectively were observed, which was responsible for a wide working temperature span ΔTFWHM of 273–287 K and thus a large effective refrigeration capacity RCeff of 98.1 J/kg under 5.0 T. At the same time, a large negative magnetoresistance MR (e.g. over 26.7% at 275 K) was also revealed during heating process under 5.0 T. Such multi-functional magnetocaloric and magnetoresistance effects render Ni–Mn–Sn–Fe alloys promising working materials for magnetic refrigerants, information storage and thermal magnetoelectricity conversions.

Abstract:We have studied the magnetocaloric effect in a series of Fe88−2xCoxNixZr7B4Cu1 alloys. The partial substitution of Fe by Co and Ni leads to a monotonic increase in the Curie temperature (TC) of the alloys from 287 K for x=0 to 626 K for x=11. The maximum magnetic entropy change (ΔSMpk) at an applied field of 1.5 T, shows a value of 1.98 J K−1 kg−1 for x=8.25. The refrigerant capacity (RC) has maximum values near 166 J kg−1 (for x=0 and 2.75). These values place the present series of alloys among the best magnetic refrigerant materials, with an RC ∼40% larger than Gd5Si2Ge1.9Fe0.1 and ∼15% larger than Fe-based amorphous alloys.

Abstract:The magnetic phase transition and magnetocaloric effects in Fe-doped MnNiGe alloys are investigated. The substitution of Fe for Ni decreases the structural transition temperature remarkably, resulting in the magnetostructural transition occurring between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic states in MnNi(1-x)Fe(x)Ge alloy. Owing to the enhanced ferromagnetic coupling induced by the substitution of Fe, metamagnetic behaviour is also observed in TiNiSi-type phase of MnNi(1-x)Fe(x)Ge alloys at temperature below the structural transition temperature.

Abstract:2D FeX (X = S, Se) sheets with one‐unit‐cell thickness are intrinsic altermagnetic semiconductors with observable magnitude of spin splitting, high magnetic transition temperature, large out‐of‐plane magnetic anisotropy energy and considerable metal‐like anomalous Hall conductivity. Moreover, an inverse magnetocaloric effect with positive ∆Sm values of 1.7–8.2 mJ kg−1 K−1 near TAM is observed. The concept of altermagnet (AM), which is neither ferromagnet nor antiferromagnet, has recently been proposed as compensated collinear magnet. Among 2D non‐van der Waals crystals, one of the thinnest altermagnets is identified and their interesting physical phenomenon at 2D limit is investigated. According to symmetry analysis and first‐principles calculations, 2D FeX (X = S, Se) sheets with one‐unit‐cell thickness are intrinsic altermagnetic semiconductors with observable magnitude of spin splitting (103−193 meV), high magnetic transition temperature (TAM = 400 and 190 K), large out‐of‐plane magnetic anisotropy energy (0.24 and 0.74 meV per atom) and considerable metal‐like anomalous Hall conductivity (143 and 249 Ω−1 cm−1). Moreover, the spin lattices of these 2D FeX ultrathin films are formed by parallel diamond‐like chains with spin frustrated interaction through spin exchange along the b direction. Consequently, an inverse magnetocaloric effect with positive ∆Sm values of 1.7–8.2 mJ kg−1 K−1 near TAM is observed. These results enrich the database of altermagnets and provide deep insights into the spin frustration effect in 2D magnets, which paves the avenue for the next‐generation spintronics.
