Abstract:Recent applications for laser-induced shock waves have been demonstrated in the aeronautical and nuclear industries, due to the development of new generations of lasers that enable high cadency rates with rather small designs. In a first part of this paper we discuss the basic principles, first aim at making an overview on basic physical processes involved in Laser Shock Processing (LSP), and a presentation of pressure loadings generated by different laser conditions. In a second part, a brief focus is given to the effects of laser intensity, target material, laser pulse duration and laser wavelength are discussed, uniform and localized modeling of fatigue behavior after LSP. In a third part, For instance it is demonstrated that laser-induced pure mechanical effects surrounding inclusions can improve the pitting corrosion behaviour of alloy steel in saline medium. Last part, the investigation is also aimed at laying groundwork for a possible combination of laser shock processing with laser micro-machining processes.
