Abstract:In this article, we consider the estimation of the structural change point in the nonparametric model with dependent observations. We introduce a maximum-CUSUM-estimation procedure, where the CUSUM statistic is constructed based on the sum-of-squares aggregation of the difference of the two Nadaraya-Watson estimates using the observations before and after a specific time point. Under some mild conditions, we prove that the statistic tends to zero almost surely if there is no change, and is larger than a threshold asymptotically almost surely otherwise, which helps us to obtain a threshold-detection strategy. Furthermore, we demonstrate the strong consistency of the change point estimator. In the simulation, we discuss the selection of the bandwidth and the threshold used in the estimation, and show the robustness of our method in the long-memory scenario. We implement our method to the data of Nasdaq 100 index and find that the relation between the realized volatility and the return exhibits several structural changes in 2007–2009.

Abstract:In this article, an estimate of a change point in variance of measurement errors ( ME) is given in terms of characteristic functions when the variances are known. Its modification is also given for the case that the variances are unknown. In addition, the consistency and convergence rates of the estimator and its modification are investigated. The simulation study shows that the proposed estimators perform well.

Abstract:Estimation of population mean is of prime concern in many studies and ratio estimators are popular choices for it. It is a common practice to use conventional measures of location to develop ratio estimators using information on auxiliary variables. In this article, we propose a class of ratio estimators for a finite population mean using information on two auxiliary variables with the help of some non-conventional location measures. We have incorporated tri-mean, Hodges-Lehmann, mid-range and decile mean of the two auxiliary variables to serve the purpose. The properties associated with the proposed class of ratio estimators are evaluated using mean square error. We have presented efficiency comparisons of the proposed class of ratio estimators with other existing estimators under the optimal conditions. An empirical study is also included for illustration and verification purposes. From theoretical and empirical study, we observed that the proposed estimators perform better as compared to the usual ratio and the existing estimators consider in this study.

Abstract:This paper deals with efficient ratio type estimators for estimating finite population mean under simple random sampling scheme by using the knowledge of known median of a study and an auxiliary variable. Expressions for the bias and mean squared error of the proposed ratio type estimators are derived up to first order of approximation. It is found that our proposed estimators perform better as compared to the traditional ratio estimator, regression estimator, Subramani and Kumarapandiyan [23], Subramani and Prabavathy [24] and Yadav et al. [28] estimators. In addition, theoretical findings are verified with the help of real data sets.

Abstract:Let {Xn,n⩾1} be an independent sequence with a mean shift. We consider the cumulative sum (CUSUM) estimator of a change point. It is shown that, when the rth moment of Xn is finite, for n⩾1 and r>1, strong convergence rate of the change point estimator is o(M(n)/n), for any M(n) satisfying that M(n)↑∞, which has improved the results in the literature. Furthermore, it is also shown that the preceding rate is still valid for some dependent or negative associate cases. We also propose an iterative algorithm to search for the location of a change point. A simulation study on a mean shift model with a stable distribution is provided, which demonstrates that the algorithm is efficient. In addition, a real data example is given for illustration.

Abstract:We study a random design regression model generated by dependent observations, when the regression function itself (or its @n-th derivative) may have a change or discontinuity point. A method based on the local polynomial fits with one-sided kernels to estimate the location and the jump size of the change point is applied in this paper. When the jump location is known, a central limit theorem for the estimator of the jump size is established; when the jump location is unknown, we first obtain a functional limit theorem for a local dilated-rescaled version estimator of the jump size and then give the asymptotic distributions for the estimators of the location and the jump size of the change point. The asymptotic results obtained in this paper can be viewed as extensions of corresponding results for independent observations. Furthermore, a simulated example is given to show that our theory and method perform well in practice.

Abstract:This paper proposes a generalized class of difference-cum-exponential-type estimators for population mean under simple random sampling without replacement through known conventional and non-conventional auxiliary information. It is observed that some well-known estimators are the members of our proposed class. Moreover, proposed class of estimators behaves efficiently than competing estimators under some simple conditions. Theoretical findings are confirmed with numerical illustration by using six real-life datasets. In addition, Monte Carlo simulation study on four real populations also approved the potential of the proposed class against competing estimators.

Abstract:In the case that the second moment exited, the cumulative sum (CUSUM) estimator of the change point in mean for a independent sequence was studied. Through truncation, it was proved that the estimator is strongly consistent, which improves the known consistent results. Furthermore, as a non-independent case, a negative association (NA) sequence was studied, which is widely applied in reliability, percolation theory and multivariate statistical analysis. Through another means of truncation, strong consistence for the change-point estimator was proved.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new estimator of the change point in variance of measurement errors in terms of U-statistics based on characteristic functions. We also investigate the strong consistency and convergence rates of the estimator. In addition, we develop the asymptotic distribution of the change point estimator under local alternative hypothesis, which is a two-side Brownian motion with a drift. Simulation results show that our estimator is significantly better than the estimator posed in [C.L. Abstract:This paper discusses the problem of the mean changes in time series with heavy-tailed AR(p) noise. Firstly, it proposes a modified ratio-type test statistic, and the results show that under the null hypothesis of no mean change, the asymptotic distribution of the modified statistic is a functional of Lévy processes and the consistency under the alternative hypothesis is obtained. However, a heavy-tailed index exists in the asymptotic distribution and is difficult to estimate. This paper uses bootstrap sampling, jackknife sampling, and subsampling to approximate the distribution under the null hypothesis, and obtain more accurate critical values and empirical power. In addition, some results from a small simulation study and a practical example give an idea of the finite sample behavior of the proposed statistic.

Abstract:We apply a three-step sequential procedure to estimate the change-point of count time series. Under certain regularity conditions, the estimator of change-point converges in distribution to the location of the maxima of a two-sided random walk. We derive a closed-form approximating distribution for the maxima of the two-sided random walk based on the invariance principle for the strong mixing processes, so that the statistical inference for the true change-point can be carried out. It is for the first time that such properties are provided for integer-valued time series models. Moreover, we show that the proposed procedure is applicable for the integer-valued autoregressive conditional heteroskedastic (INARCH) models with Poisson or negative binomial conditional distribution. In simulation studies, the proposed procedure is shown to perform well in locating the change-point of INARCH models. And, the procedure is further illustrated with empirical data of weekly robbery counts in two neighborhoods of Baltimore City.
